  • The 2000 Ford Expedition coolant leak from the rear passenger side of the engine. Video shows the teardown and the coolant line in question. Let me know if you need any help.

    Great help. Most other videos say there is a pipe and it leaks, good luck. I appreciate your effort to explain the steps and show the failure point.
    A go fund me effort for a tripod and a big light might be a huge plus for future episodes.

    Looks like the part number is, Dorman Hose 626-221. It is available at Autozone for $35.99. I have the same issue with my 1998 Expedition. There is no room to access from the front without removing the intake. I was going to try to reroute it, but had no access. If you have the extra nipple on the rear, the part number is Dorman Hose 626-517 also available at Autzone for $36.99. If you need the metal pipe on the rear passenger side of the intake that turns 90 degrees, it is Dorman Hose 626-229 and costs $34.99. Rockauto has the same parts for half the price of Autozone.

    Man you saved me with this one. Mines a 2000 Eddie Bauer so I figure that's why mine did not have the nipple that broke on yours. My problem was that the steep pipe pin holed. I fabricated a copper u joint, connected it to the outlet on the pump, and ran a new hose out from under the front of the intake manifold. That way if I ever pop a leak again I can pull the alternator and have full access. Thanks for the best step by step video I've ever used.

    Effn bad ass! Thank you for the video. Pretty sure this is the issue im currently having with my 97 Ford Expedition XLT 5.4. Decided to take on this truck as a project to learn how to work on cars and it has been kickin my a$$. Got a newer 5.4 triton engine put in and have done everything else myself using videos like yours to guide me. This was a tremendous help thank you 🤟🏽

    Great video! Gave me the guidance and the confidence I needed! One thing I feek U should mention is that, on my 98 F150 (4.6) anyway, the fuel and return lines need to be disconnected as one of the final steps and it requires a special tool for this. I got to the 11th hour and no luck pulling the manifold, going to rent the tool from the auto shop in the morning. Very much appreciate your taking the time to make this video!

    You just inspired me to do the tune-up on my 99 Expedition with 218,000 miles. Yesterday I changed out the fuel filter ( it was a bitch to get it off), then today I did a radiator flush, my coolant was brown, it was red, also changed the thermostat. now i want to do the spark plugs. this looks so easy. Im 19 and I fix my neighbors cars, they thank me so much because no one has had a problem. :)

    @moyokuda In the rear cargo area, just above the leak is where the heater core is located. You will need to remove the cover on that side to inspect it, I imagine you will find it leaking.
    Next one I do I will be sure to video but let me know if I can advise you further.

    Great Video!! Mine is leaking from below the coolant crossover so still need to pull the intake manifold today. Same procedure though so very valuable. The Chilton F-150 manual sucks!!!

    great video was awesome . i did this same thing just as he said not really hard to do . but when you replace that heater pipe their are two o - rings on the nipple off of the water pump . does not come with it make sure you get them or it will leak and will have to do it all over . thank you 2012nugget.

      @ How did it work out for you, I have a 00 Navigator with the same issue, cost me $1000 to repair... and I have "Smoke" or "Steam" still coming from the defroster vents.... How long is that gonna be an issue for?

    Your video is really GREAT BTW !! Thank you! I am fairly confident that this will be my issue as I was a dunder head and failed to remove the water over the summer and place some antifreeze in Just enough of a cold to get some freeze points. yesterday I repaired some heater hose quick connections at the passenger side near the wheel. Now we have a trickle showing in the back where the transmission meets the back of the motor. Looks WAY fun!! I"M going to DO it!🙂🤪 Would you say that this particular metal pipe line is present in the 2003 motor as well? Thanks again VERY well done!!!

      @@calvinbruton8581 yep, my leakers were behind the timing cover. Took 4 days to tear down to them, 1 to put everything back together. Took the opportunity to also pull the intake, new gaskets, clean up my DISGUSTING lifter valley which won me back 5 lost 10mm sockets. 🤦🏼‍♀️😂 Easiest spark plug change ever too. I swore when I did my tune up a few years ago that I would set the truck on fire before I fck with #4, 7 or 8 plugs ever again. Going forward I'll just pull the intake.

    How long did it take the antifreeze that leaked into the heating system to burn off?

    I think I'm having the same issue with my 03 navi but it stops leaking after I shut off the engine in like 15 / 20 min...

    The hole the tube goes into can be corroded and dirty or can be actually pitted in a car that has ran water instead of antifeeze. You will want to inspect it with a mirror to determin which it is.

    I have a 99 Expedition 4.6L that i think has the same problem (coolant building up in the rear pass spark plug bore). Do you know if the tear down is the same?

    I separated the manifold top part from the bottom(upper intake from lower intake). Is there a special torque amount when putting it back?

    Mine isn't leaking but replacing that heater hose and trying to get to the clamp that connects to the pipe. Will the intake need to come off to get to the clamp? Thanks for the video

    Nice video. I have a 2000 Ford Explorer. We just replaced a leaking radiator and the thermostat. Now coolant is leaking around the transmission. Do you know if Explorers have a similar problem to the one you describe here?

    Could you identify the plastic piece ? The intake gasket itself could have been the issue with yours seeing how there was coolant in the middle.

    Get rid of the heater by cut the metal pipe behind the water pump n put a hose pug with hose clamp! Do the same on top where the manifold n it will take care of that leak! I live in arizona so don't care for heaters! We don't have this problem with cars over here but make sure it not a freeze plug, or a bad intake manifold you know that I'm talking about with 5.4 go bad on the passenger side next to where the heater connects and if it leaks there when you must replace that plastic intake it sucks but it has to be done!thanks good video God bless

    There is, be aware that the smaller diam. bolts are threaded into alluminum so do not put alot of force into getting them tight. Snug them down, one hand on your rachet, try to estimate about 15-18 pounds of force, which is not alot. Too much and you will pull the threads out !

    they must have updated the design. i can see that tube before i tear into it. i do not have that his of intake to heater core line. i believe mine is a broken air intake. also common with these.

    Is this tube the same on a 96 F150 5.0? I have coolant collecting on the bottom of the bell housing. I'm trying to determine if its this metal hose or a freeze plug. Any suggestions?

    I have an oil leak from the rear of my Intake manifold on the passenger side. Is it the same process to get to it from what this video shows. I want to do my spark plugs so ill do then at the same time too. It's just a small leak but it's been there for about 10,000 miles and just let's out a drip or two every time I pull into the driveway. Never been low on oil, but just want to get it fixed up. I guess my real concern is how hard is this to do?

    Is it possible to bypass this? I believe I have the same issue and have been loading it up with water Everytime I drive. (the leak is the latest bad.) Tried blue devil stop leak twice and helped a little but not enough

      The battery was still hooked up. I never instructed to remove the terminals.

    Hey 2012nugget.... good n interesting video. If you're still there, I sprung a coolant leak which I thought was at the front upper middle of engine. I thought it was underside of larger radiator return hose to top front of engine. NOPE.
    I'm researching the Coolant Temp sensor, located at front in middle top of block. The leak could be this hose, or could it be the Coolant Sensor interface? If it's the hose you showed, does it leak down backside of engine? Mine is down frontside.

      The dealer will have it. Aftermarket stores don't carry it.

    i have a 2000 expedition with the same problem it leaks on the left side in till you start it then it leaks it leaks on the right do you think that the intake could be broken ?

    I have a 2001 expedition xlt v8, and I took the intake out just like this video because I have a leak on that same area. I also found water in the center of the mono block after I took out the part. I didn't find anything wrong with the hoses but I did find a plastic part that was deteriorated in pieces. Could that be the problem? Please help, thank you very much! happy holidays to everyone!

    Pressure test revealed it was the water pump. When running it was too hard to find the water. Thanks.

    You need to pressure test it, you can get a tester from autozone, they will loan you one if you dont want to purchase it. Do not run the engine while you have pressure on the system though, that could cause damage.

    Between the Expedition and Navigator both engines are nearly impossible to work on.

    Yeah it has a retaining bolt at the back of the pump and one on the rear of the cylinder head too if im not mistaken. You will want to go ahead and do the drivers side as well as that is the side more prone to damage due to the coolant passages. Good luck and be sure to let me know how it went.

    Hey @2012nugget thanks for posting these videos. Quick question. I have a 1999 expedition I'm trying to fix up for this kid but it's leaks coolant/water. Like it came out like a cow pissing on a flat rock.. Anyways I took it to city garage and mechanic said it was because the core/freeze plugs were blown out. My question is how hard are they really to get to on the 1999 4.6l V8 (Romeo engine) he said it would be over 800 in labor because they would have to remove the whole transmission. Are they that hard to get to? Once again, thanks for posting these vids and helping folks out! Cheers from Texas!

      I would say that this video covers it more than likely. They appear to have a freeze plug leak but after close observation you'll probably find its not the plugs.

    have a coolant leak in my 02 expedition xlt v8 5.4. been trying to figure it out. hoping this isn't where it is leaking if I have to take as much out as you did! I'm gonna go look in the daylight and until then I'm praying and crossing fingers :-P I might be able to get everything out of the way and fix the problem, but not sure about putting everything back and not having damaged nothing... guess I better get winter tires for my bicycle just in case lol.     @2012nugget. Is it not possible to bypass all that from the water pump straight to heater core? I do have time to pull everything apart, and can't afford to be without a vehicle nor afford to take it to a shop. Just looking to do a quick and temp repair until I can pull it in the garage to fix.

    Well done video. I believe I've got this same issue with my 98 5.4 expedition. My question is, when you get the intake off, of coarse you will need to change the hose on the back of the intake itself, but will you need to change the metal hose that you show in the video that runs under the intake?       +Mike G Yes you will and you should replace the sound damper\heat shield between the upper and lower intake., oil pressure sender as well. Since you can't service theses without removing the intake again. The damper diaper is $47.00 and the sending unit $24.00 from Ford and replace all o-rings on injectors, intake and if it's old replace the valve cover gaskets.

    Can you come over to my house and or I can drive over to your house and do my Ford Expedition 2001 4 WD. I believe I have the same problem maybe? I see green coolant on my intake manifold on the flat part of course some oil leaks but I think that’s a valve cover gasket I’m not a mechanic and I’m not sure has 150,000 miles on it many miles was on your expedition when you’re doing this video about the recall.
    And thanks again for when you said don’t worry about it leaking in the back because they do that or something like that you said.

    Yeah my 2000 navigator doin' that shit... but my nipple is in front of engine has pin hole at the weld or however nipple is fixed in the metal tube probably due to my changing the spark plugs back in late dec. '15 and slightly tugging and pulling around the hoses on passenger side.... my heater core giving issues too this past Summer could smell antifreeze via a/c and recently seen wet spot on passenger floor mat.... and couple of days ago the spraying pin hole at nipple attachment.... I seen a video guy just had 1 hose and he went around it w/o removing intake....ran hose on top of motor and attached to firewall/heater core but mine has 2 hoses 1 big 1 little attached to metal tube at front..... I heard both tube and heater core been replace before and just has 190k. Thanks man, kennyj underscore wsp at hotm dot come

    It is hard to say, everyone is different. Between 2-6 hrs. is a good estimation. For a pro, its not that bad, no airtools and you slow considerably.

      I have a 02 expedition Eddie bauer it runs great until engine warms up n water drips in the number 7 causing a misfire is there anyway to quick fix it and is it intake or gasket

    Is it possible to change only the heater hose going to the back of the engine without removing intake.. the hose clamp is right against firewall. Please help

      Oh yes, it's tight but removal for a hose is not needed.

    2012nugget, I have a 97 f150 with 4.6L V8. It is leaking coolant from under the truck between the engine and transmission. Tried searching for leaks on top of the engine as well as below with a snake camera but no luck finding the leak. Any ideas as to where it may be coming from?

      Carlos Robles did you find where your F150 was leaking? My Expedition is leaking the same way.
