  • The first trash to track failure!
A Lima DB V300 diesel that was hiding a nasty secret. No spares seem to be available. So is this one just too far gone to repair?

Replace with brass gears, the specs are: Messing-Ritzel Z 10 ,Modul 0,5, jeweils 4 Stück mit 2mm Bohrung, might require drilling it to 2,5mm but measure first

In the past, I have repaired Bachmann N scale split gears. We can buy very thin walled, small diameter, brass or aluminum tubing at hardware stores and also a store called Hobby Lobby. You can cut pieces and slip them over the non-toothed area with some thin glue like super glue.
If you can not find it there, let me know the inner diameter of what you need that will match the outer diameter of the "boss." I think that is the word for the area of concern.

Dan, I thought about the issue after you said the plastic gears shrunk around the axle. I would try to clamp the gears without the axle in it until the glue or epoxy cured completely . Then drilled the opening on the gear larger for a slip fitment around the axle and to finish up using the epoxy to set the gears in place on the axle. I've been in the same situation before with larger models be sure to use calipers to measure the axle diameter first so you know what size drill bit to use.

This is why I prefer the Lima G-motor era. This "Nova" range with their expensive motors and drive systems and lack of spare parts Bankrupted lima, who had to buy jouef to stay afloat and then had to be bought by Rivarossi. Which Hornby bought.

A fascinating project. I thought about it for a while, and came up with an idea that you might find useful. It will require drilling skills that I don't have, but maybe you do. I suggest taking one of the axles and try to spot glue the cog + case to the axle, in the correct position. Then place the axle in a vise (might be fiddly). Use a drill (1 mm?) and drill a hole right through the plastic casing, through the axle and out through the plastic case on the other side. Then poke a broken drill or perhaps a nickel silver wire through the hole in the case and axle. If a broken drill, it could be glued in place. If a wire, it could be wound or twisted in place. I think this might hold in place. Just try one axle, and see if this works. Maybe this is just a silly idea, or maybe not.

I'm no expert, but I was going to suggest a similar strategy

The things I've done to totally polish off my childhood locos in an attempt to emulate yourself and others. Love the fact that you had so many strategies before suspension of work. Great vid as always.

On ebay you can find (brass) replacement gears for this model. I found a German seller (KH- modelbahnbau)

What about a baking soda and superglue mixture on the cog sets off the axles then run a drill through them once they have set for a few days? or find someone local to 3D print a set of geared axles for you?...... or make a brass/aluminium sleeve to go over the shaft of the plastic part after it has been glued together?... a few ideas that I would try myself and probably will have to do one day....

I would suggest 3D printing. Or glueing the gears & then casting fresh ones. If you are willing to spend money then RTV Silicon Rudder would allow you to cast in white metal. A cheaper but less precise moulding materials would be Plasticene or wax. The cast material could be resin or a super glue/baking soda mix.

Split plastic gears also appear in many other products like video recorders and other Hi-Fi units with moving parts, which is a design flaw.

Is there enough meat on the gear to ream it out to axle diameter then glue it.

Hi, Dan Lima/MRC made an Alco C420 that used these wheel seets . NWSL ( Northwest shortline) make a replacement set that is for a 10 tooth spur gear . I have a set I can send you if thats the correct spur gear .

Perhaps you could find someone with a 3D printer to make some new cogs.

I have used Hornby class 20 wheel sets X9846 on several of my Lima continental locos which had split gears and they now work fine . Lendons have them in stock . David

you may be able super glue the cracked gear in place, might be noisy but they might run, I did that with a bachmann F7. It wasn't the axle gears though nut the idler gears. also the unpowered bogies axles are split.

You could buy another lima d300 and hope the gears are better on that one then use first as the spares one

Peter's spares have Hornby class 20 (ex Lima) drive wheels in stock and the gear looks the same, might be worth an inquiry? A lovely loco , I hope this works out.

Luckily Walthers sell complete replacement axle sets .. which look very similar. I'll email you details

Thats a shame, but did wonder if you maybe could use a donor model. Yes its probably a more expensive route but it is a possible route to get this running.

Just a thought the Lima class 20 has a can motor in the middle and drives one bogey by a little prop shaft but I wonder whether the axles are the same and that at least the gears
