Well, I'm an Australian (in Melbourne) and while I'm very proud of our orchestra, I think this orchestra is among the very best in the world. I wish I could hear them live, but thoroughly enjoy their very frequent RUclips postings (not only performed, but also recorded with the highest quality). I almost shudder to think that, when I was very young, our countries were at war. The foibles of humanity. Your comment is spot on.

You can say what you want about the interpretation, or, for example, the tempi, but the quality of orchestral playing here is simply magnificent!

Agreed! All too often the conductor, soloist(s), and orchestra members are praised, but the excellent work of the camera crew goes unacknowledged. Some other venues also have excellent camera crews - the Concertgebouw, for example. We take it so much for granted when watching many videos that it jolts us when excellent performances are captured with only one fixed camera, which all too often gives us a view of the conductor's back.

If Tchaikovsky's intention was to "transmit" joy in the finale by orchestrating the popular song "Я иду, иду погуляю" then, he made it. The contrabass player seems happy, smiling at 39:13".
    Eloquent performance.

Krzysztof Urbański does very well here ! Not to speak of the orchestra, which is amazing. The conductor shows real affinity to this music with flexible tempi. This reminds me of a reading by Marek Janowski in Berlin 20 years ago. Janowski loved a brisk pace, maybe more forceful than Urbański.

Fremragende.

During, but mostly after his catastrophic and short marriage to Antonia Milyukova Tschaikowsky wrote this music. It tells us about destiny, dreams, longings, but also about sorrow and a hopeless situation. We dont need to know his biography to love this music, but maybe it helps us a little bit. Wonderful playing from hr-Sinfonieorchester under Krzysztof Urbanski!

How many times have I already listened to this rendition? I dont know. Sometimes I think it is a symphonie for the bassoon, then for the oboe, then for the flute or for the clarinet. The only thing I know is that Tschaikowsky had a wonderful gift to lift up all the instruments in an orchestra in full sight. Something that the cameras in this uptaking fully understand. The result is splendid. Together with this wonderful orchestra and Krzysztof Urbanski this turns out to be the best interpretation of this 4:th Symphony I ever heard. Thank you all so much!

Einfach wunderbar!

I count myself as a Tchaik fan, but can find the 4th uniquely grating among his symphonies- frankly among anyone's symphonies. KU's legato-laden management of the first movement here is superb, sewing all the crescendos into a whole of natural momentum where the drama does not overwhelm the feeling that we have not yet reached the end. This manner is evident even among the soloists (14:10). Really, I can't think of another performance I've liked any better for making this music sound cohesive (and grim!). As usual, the hrSinf sounds fantastic.

I can see how reactions could vary on some aspects of tempi - this would be one of the longer Tchai 4ths, at about 48min, with some at only 40 minutes, simply too fast.
[At this point may I explain: We watch on a 9ft / 230cm screen in darkened room, with high quality multi-channel Dolby Atmos (simulated) audio (not bragging, just illustrating that we see/hear under close to optimum technical and psychological conditions) thrilled that we're able to sit back in a simulated concert-hall experience - as close as we can get to "being there"]
Wow, having, apologetically, got that out of the way: At the first (mildly) unusual tempo I wondered, until it launched into the next section, and suddenly it made sense. And further on, similarly, throughout the work. By the conclusion, I found that, finally, we ere hearing a much more dramatic, yet much more expressive and more sensitive, 4th, elevating it up at least, to stand beside the reputation of the 5th, but not quite the artistic and creative genius of the 6th - although I would dearly love to hear that latter work from this orchestra and this conductor.

As always the orchestra (and the production) are sparkling. I have to say however that the first movement lacked the 'con anima' for me - the generally slow tempo seemed to somehow nullify the tension; lethargic even. Meh, aesthetic preference perhaps, but it does need the 'anima'!!

    • @drgustavbakter4735

To put it more bluntly the firsr movement was bland to the point of boredom and lacked any kind of tension. Another example, I'm afraid, of a young conductor striving to be original and reinvent the wheel.
