Mike has a great understanding of the bass as an instrument. He’s like a special teams football player that played special teams since high school. He’s not a failed guitar player or anything. That fit perfectly in VH because everybody had their special role.
Mikey is a great bass player and perfectly complimented Eddie and Al. His solos had some cool notes for sure but they were always theatrical and more of an event! So was Dave and his sword forms and kicks. Everything VH did, the good, the bad, and groundbreaking was epic and memorable.
Michael has always been underrated and underappreciated. Why on Earth would the greatest guitar player on the planet have kept him so long if he didnt contribute to the famous Van Halen sound. Mikey you're awesome man. Hats off to Sammy for recognizing you. Keep rocking dude. Play the guts out of it however it feels right. I'm a die hard VH fan. Eddie Alex Dave and Michael
I met the guys at soundcheck and mike was only guy to sign backstage pass for me..Sammy wasnt there..Ed n Alex blew us off...we paid to have meet n greet..long story short..great show n got pic taken with Jack Daniels bass..n Sammy signed a pic of him and Mikey while on stage...Eddie my king let me down..😢 but I've met them all..thats somethin😉

It's no Doug Wimbish's Swirl but it's nice to see another one of my favorite bassists using effects-- even if it's all over the place just to get the crowd riled up.
He's NOT a soloist. He's a very good, solid rock bassist - just check out what he's doing with The Circle (e.g. "Finish What You Started" live @ Howard Stern - some very nice playing!). But he's not a soloist and has never been. This solo is, well, for entertainment only.
I agree. He is actually very good at the role of a bassist, playing solid but moving lines, while performing some of the best back up vocals since the Beach Boys. Soling isn't really his thing though

Eddy really must have been drunk when he decided his spoilt kid needed to replace Mikey lol. I only know his kid exists cause in nepotism. Eddy ruined his legacy and the funny part is everyone he boned loved him and had he been nice and fair.. he’d probably still be alive. Mikey and Sammy were fun and fair and dug the fans. Eddy and Wolfgang loved themselves and felt you were lucky to see them. Alex? Was just kinda there holding the beat. He is a fantastic drummer, for sure. How he held a beat perfectly without knowing what was gonna happen next cause his band was crazy.. that’s impressive.
I ran a flanger/phase shifter and distortion. But...I ran an old Echoplex, those tape echo that PA guys used and ran it thru a Marshall. Sound sucked but then thru an SVT....had a lot of fun with it. Solo only though. Shit like that gets lost in the mix
I'd like to hear and see Mike play without effects for once. I could be wrong but I think his backing vocals were more important for Van Halen's music than his bass skills ...

i hate guitarists who overuse the dotted 8th note delay trick to make it sound like theyre playing more notes than they really are....and 99% of the time the audience truly believes he is...cheaters!...I CALL SHENANIGANS!!! LOL
For me he's one of those guys that plays the shit out of songs but what's the bass-solo point besides bathroom break for others. I think Gene Simmons can play the shit out of a bass too but when he solos I'm never as embarrassed for a human being. Cliff Williams was decent enough to spare us and probably for a good reason.
