It was a chemistry that only those 4 dudes at that time could really make happen. Eddie was lighting in a bottle, but MA, DLR and AVH are all jedis in their own right, so it's just a super band amongst superbands. It's just too bad DLR didn't age like MA playing.
Michael Anthony is without a doubt the best backing vocals in the game. He’s like the secret ingredient in the KFC recipe. It makes it what it is and you don’t think about it, but if it was taken away, it would be blatantly obvious something’s missing
MA is one of the few bass players that sticks out to me as a dumb guitarist as someone that should not be diminished. He makes all of those albums so much better. Eddie was so amazing because MA AVH were the best rhythm section in the business, or maybe, arguably...ever
Great vid. Michaels internal clock was perfect. He was the bass drum when Alex was going off doing his own thing. His punching, solid notes made the band complete!
Naturally, Mike laid back most of the time and filled out the rhythm section because Ed had so much firepower. Not everybody in a rock band can be virtuosos. That said, Mike can play the hell outta the bass and plays really tasteful stuff on the first three VH albums. And he has his own sound: you can always tell whether it’s Mike or Ed playing the bass (like on those garbage 2004 tracks). Everybody talks about Mike’s voice which is iconic and one of rock’s best ever.
i’m so happy to see videos like this- mikey never gets the recognition he deserves! he’s a beast of a bass player, and his background vocals are killer! i love MA ❤️
100% although wolfie did a great job doing that when he was in the band. People thought he was playing to backing tracks but the kid can also sing!!! Thanks for watching nyek, please subscribe and join the madness 🙌
That "bassline" on I'll Wait always seemed like a programmed keyboard synth sound and not an actual Michael Anthony played bass line. There are other pre-keyboard VH songs that have killer bass parts. "I'll Wait" isn't one of them.
Mike is a badass. As quirky as Van Halen hits, he was always in the pocket. He either supported Eddie or he rode the shit out of the drums, all why supporting the singer. On some B side tracks during the guitar solo, sometimes he just went off, like Girl Gone Bad. Live is where he really showed his chops.
Michael’s skills as a bassist are best seen on their live footage. Mike is full of tasty licks, fills, and can get pretty busy, all while singing the best fucking backing vocals on rock
Great video! MA is the heartbeat that allowed the blood of Eddie to flow. You do realize that when Ed built 5150 in 1983 MA ceased to play on records. Ed played bass on everything.
I've heard rumors of that but I've been told on good authority from the van halen camp thats not true. They've been saying that since the 70s. MA is amazing, but from knowing people who have worked inside 5150, I know MA played the bass. Whether EVH tinkered or punched stuff in, who knows, but there was no reason for it.
That’s not entirely true, but it was mostly Eddie telling Mike what to play. That’s why all of the bass 1984-onwards is pretty much just riding root 8th notes. Not riffing. Ed just pushed him off to the sidelines. On the first three records Mike is playing actual bass lines.
Mikey started influencing a whole new breed of bass players , even look at current bands falling in reverse has Tyler Burgess holding down those Michael Anthony style harmonies
Michael Anthony's vocals were a huge part of their overall sound and feel. We will never know how much of MA's simplicity was just what happened or - as Sammy Hagar claimed - if EVH pushed MA to play more simply so Ed could mess up parts live and not sound as awful. I think it was total garbage the way the VH brothers treated MA and Michael Anthony always took the high road, but seemed sad over it. I just know Mikey sounded great live with Chickenfoot and lots of players give him respect.
Mikey is a great player, great guy, and great vocalist. It's a bummer about the whole van halen story, from dlr ruining the end of the band to the brothers not being willing to do anything to all of the missed opportunities. That's another reason why they'll go down as one of the most legendary bands ever. The could haves are endless. God knows how many records are still in 5150 studios. At least WVH got to pay tribute to his pops at the Taylor Hawkins concert, which was also rad.
U heard some bass player recently on Pandora who was described as the Eddie Van Halen of Bass and I forgot his name. It was amazing and I’m sad I can’t remember the Dude

I think even more. MA is one of the greatest backup vocalist but JC is a lead vocalist. His voice blended with Layne WAS the voice of AIC which is also why William Duvall works perfectly. Because people don't realize a solid 50% of the vocals is Jerry, I didn't even realize until I was older that wasn't just Layne. That said, I think comparing him to MA is diminishing his roll, he is 50% of the vocals and it's clear by the insane quality of AIC after Layne passed that he really is the EVH of AIC.
