  • The Imperial Fists, whether you are collecting 40K or Heresy, look fantastic on the tabletop. Yellow, though, has a reputation for being rather difficult to paint and is pretty unforgiving but in this tutorial, we show you how to get a great yellow easily (perfect for large Horus Heresy Legions )as well as how to fix any mistakes you may make when painting the yellow. As usual, all the techniques and the colour palette demonstrated in this tutorial can be used on a wide range of miniatures from your favourite studios.

I'm six minutes in but I had to stop and just say THANK YOU for actually demonstrating a mistake (the black paint) and then how to fix it. So many other videos on RUclips warn against making this mistake, and discuss how to fix it, but seeing you actually go through the process isn't just useful, it's oddly reassuring to see an expert make and fix a mistake, even if it's demonstrative. Thank you!

Ive pretty much been doing this, but I must say, that i find it A LOT easier to apply the black to the joints, then neaten up the undercoat, and THEN go with the yellow contrast. Can always fix the black up a bit again after. Youll get a lot less mistakes along the way I find.

Absolutely brilliant again Duncan. What I love about your painting videos is they are easy to follow, don't require super-advanced techniques but still provide absolutely superb results.
This is probably one of the most efficient imperial fist colour schemes I've seen and that contrast base/shade step with the layer paint finish is a total 'light bulb' moment for me!
I loved the idea of contrast but always shyed away from the finish which, for me, always reflected the minimal effort that was applied yet I still love the paints - this is an approach (which seems so logical now) that i will apply over and over again now I've seen it.
Thank you Duncan - absolute gem of the community :-)

Early results I have seen on the FB groups are promising. I just grabbed a pot of it to try. I am wondering if the better play might be to do a preshade over a light primer, and then throw the Imperial Fists Contrast right over as your main final layer. Maybe do a few highlights to taste.

Late reply, but I've had good success using Chapter Master Valrak's method which is to do White Scars to Avarland Sunset to Imperial Fists. I am currently trying out pre-shading or, "reverse Zenithal," with a warm brown or red-brown contrast or shade. Still figuring out how well any of that works.

Been watching your tutorials since the old days when you were with GW, hands down you have the best tutorials and I really appreciate lately you speaking more about mistakes and how to actually fix them. The demonstration was super helpful as well because once you got to the part about black after all the yellow done, I already knew I would be making at least three mistakes when painting those small parts. One day I will have to try your paint range because, well, its Duncan.

That casual and deliberate "mistake" when painting the black.
    What an absolute mad-lad!
I remember when painting yellow seemed impossible. I love IF but my first chapter had black armor. You can probably guess why! Now with so many tools and resources painting great looking minis is more accessible than ever.
The wraithbone trick is super useful as well. A: for the obvious reason you just taught me but also because that's the colour I imagine Ceramite to be so it will be a handy paint to use for weathering.
    cracking content as always, Duncan!

I was looking for a different tutorial but I found this one. Very nice armour painting method. I remember when I have found your old tutorial since you were still in GW. You used Averland sunset (my favourite colour) as a base, ushabti bone as a drybrush and Casandora yellow as a finish. Then optional dorn yellow for highlights. I've never forgot this method and I'm using it since then.
So I just wanted to say thank you for this old tutorial.

OK I think I've found my favoured method to painting Fists. I've been looking at so many methods many of which leave them too dark or over detailed.
This method gives them a nice bright finish and isn't overly complicated. The only downside is I'm allergic to Wraithbone spray. I think I'll test this out on some Phalanx Warders I'm using as tester models. The last method I used, for my old heresy fists, was the one you painted on an old GW advent calendar video.

I was curious how you were gonna handle the yellow. The layering up from contrast trick is basically what I guessed you'd do. It really does make things easier.
Writing down that trick for cleaning up mistakes on yellow though. Because it really does make the mistake invisible. I'm also quite curious how the newly announced Imperial Fist Yellow contrast paint will look. It might not look too different with this technique, but could be very suitable for other schemes.

It is crazy to see the difference between Iyanden Yellow and the new Imperial Fist contrast, the new yellow is soooo smooth and perfectly applies, even on flat surfaces. Incredible medium, great pigment. I think Iyanden Yellow's better at staining the recesses but the finish on Imperial Fist is so perfect, I don't mind going in myself to punch them up a bit if necessary.

Here's a neat trick about painting yellow. Do not prime in black, what you want to do is prime in PINK with a zenithal highlight of ivory on the top. So just grab a pink krylon and go to town, trust me it works.

With the Corvus Black that didn't wash off the yellow armour, it could be a battle effect of scorched marks or soot fire when the space marine marches on the battle field. Or do you need a darker brown paint mixed with medium?
Yes, I had to wash the mistakes off some parts of my models when I accidently paint over an area I already painted.
Your Imperial Fist turned out well to serve alongside Rogal Dorn against the Warmaster.

Wouldn't you only have to apply the black twice if the yellow spilled onto the black?

I have over eleven thousand points worth of my custom orange space marines (orange is as bad, if not worse to cover with than yellow).
The single best advice is to simply pick a different color - avoid those two and white as your main color.
If you’re set on it anyway, getting an airbrush to do your priming and basecoat is invaluable, for the sake of your sanity.
I will day though, that they do pop and grab attention in a way that no Ultramarine does.

Can I just ask - for working on small things, faces etc. Are you using goggles or magnifying equipment, or do you use the camera feed monitor to see what you're doing at all? Or am I just blind as a bat?
I know most folk are going to recommend yoctosan magnifiers, which I do use and I am aware of, I always just wondered how it's done for cameras without getting a hunched over dude with magnifiers on his head in the shot :P

Another side comment, I know I'd love to see tutorials for all the legions here on youtube.

Would you suggest the new imperial fists contrast instead or continue with the current one?

With the backpack being all black and silver would it not be easier to just leave it off and paint them separately?
