Still watching this in 2023...I remember being sick, home alone for this game (the rest of my family were at a party)...in the midst of puking every other minute, I ran outta the house screaming "IOWA WINS!", did laps around the yard and finished it off with a healthy barf...one of the best days of my life
@@SuperfanDK Just like when Kirk Gibson hit that home run in the World Series, Podolak's "I _DON'T BELIEVE WHAT I JUST SAW!"_ was a perfect call! And, even now, _16 years later,_ I still shake my head as Holloway goes into the end zone.
I remember this game like it was yesterday....Dad and I were watching it in the living room and were kind disappointed Iowa was about to lose and then...BAM! We started jumping around, dog barking at us screaming "HOLY SH!T!!!!" then I ran outside swinging my Iowa jersey around screaming "TD IOWA, TD IOWA!!!".
My son and I have a tradition of running outside and spiking a football after every iowa touch down and it's so much fun watching my boy be so proud of his iowa team,we live in a prodomately Cornsuckers fan base only 1 hour from stadium in Lincoln we have been doing alot of spiking footballs outside these last years our neighbors are mostly neb fans so it's great especially when we've spanked the suckers as of late!Go hawks!
I'm watching this in 2016, more than a full decade after this Hail Hawkeye, and I STILL experience the full roller coaster of emotions as I did back on that New Year's Day of seeing the live broadcast!
@@gthegod81 that's what makes us a great Hawkeye Nation we don't forget what we've done, where we're going, and what can be done as long as there's no quit. Go Hawks Black and Gold forever
There's no way it wasn't intentional. Everyone was expecting typical, conservative and reliable Ferentz-ball. Get down field enough with some first downs and timeouts in order for a long field goal. Everyone was expecting a timeout on 2nd and short on the Iowa 44, most importantly LSU. It created enough confusion to wreak havoc on LSU's prevent attack. Let's not forget: there was only 14 seconds left and over 20 yards to go for any real chance at a field goal.
I stood up from my chair so fast and screamed so hard, at the same time, that I literally passed out and fainted. Came to and started screaming some more!
I’m a Texas High School Football junkie. Drew Tate is a legend in Texas. I watched this game with my dad & we both jumped off the couch when Holloway scored!! Unbelievable moment
I still remember sitting watching this game with my dad at like 9 or 10 barely knowing anything about football but just kind of hoping something would happen. I remember literally jumping off the couch with my dad celebrating, not fully comprehending how amazing the play was. So awesome.
This game was a rollercoaster, Iowa came out hot, then got jerked around a bit, and finally fell behind. When it got to the end of the game, I remember sitting there and thinking, "wtf are these idiots doing wasting all this clock" then the ball snapped and I was like, "he’s running free, hopefully he sees him" and finally jumping up on my seat and banging on the glass between the coaches booth and the stands as Norm Parker giggled and the other coaches celebrated. Tiger bait my ass.
I remember this game like it was yesterday...I was at my sister's house, sitting in her living room, complaining to the high heavens about how Tate's mismanagement of the clock was about to cost Iowa the game...and then he fired that 60-yard thing of beauty...my mother looked at me, and I said, "Um...yeah...I'll have the extra-super-sized helping of CROW, please!!" That was absolutely unbelievable....even seven years later!
I remember i didnt get to watch this live, but was privy to watching a replay. A friend and I were believing that Iowa probably lost this one. I have never been so surprised...

My dad and I were watching this game, huddled around my grandparent's TV, he was stressing so hard. He was certain we were throwing the game away, and I said, "It's okay dad, Tate could throw a bomb downfield, it could be caught, run into the endzone, it's not over yet, it's not over yet." He wouldn't hear any of it. To this day I give him shit about not believing me, I had faith that day.

Drew Tate did the same thing for Calgary last Sunday November 111th...His grandmother just passed away, he got a cheap shot to the head in the 1st half and he was down to Saskatchewan with 52 seconds! Calgary 36 Saskatchewan 30. Great CFL QB!
True...I guess it just looks like Hinkel got away with a push from the first camera angle...but when you look at the other angles, especially toward the end of the clip, it looks like Hinkel had a hand on the shirt, but like you said, he didn't have a hold of the defensive guy. Don't get me wrong--I'm a huge Iowa fan, and glad that the play turned out the way it did. :)
The story i heard about the play was holloway and soloman lined. Up wrong holloway was supposed to line up on the outside and soloman was to be on the inside but in the end it was awesome
Grew up watching Drew Tate play at Baytown Lee; he was a marvel of a quarterback. He used to do these throws every week - hence why we was highly recruited and Texas Gatorade Player of the year in 2002 (Might be 2001). It sucks that he didn't stick in the NFL, he would have done work in this day and age of NFL. He did some great things in the CFL though.
The 2021 season is about to begin. In some ways it's unfortunate I still have to use this game to get me fired up. But I remember it like it happened yesterday, right down to having thrown a set of keys just as Tate was throwing his pass, I was so upset at how badly we mismanaged the clock. And even when Tate went into the end zone, my eyes were having a hard time accepting we had just done that.
no if u watch it closely he didn't get the guy from behind he didn't even have a grip on the guy's shirt, he was mainly running next to him and blocking without grabbing anything! but the other defender was behind his man might have pushed him from behind but not hard enough to knock him down!
everytime I see this I just put up my middle fingers in the air and dance um up and down at the thought of LSU thinking they won that game only to lose it in the final seconds lol
Actually at FryFest this past fall, they had a panel discussion with members of the 2004 team ( ruclips.net/video/RuJ3QifWGf0/видео.html ), and during that panel Sam Brownlee (running back) said that Drew told him later "I was actually trying to throw it to HInkel", Warren just got to it first.
Criminally negligent clock management bailed out by a miracle. I'll take it but you have to know what the fuck you're doing, and our coaching staff screwed the pooch on this big time.
The penalty was before the snap so the spike didn't count and since the clock was moving, when the ball is ready for play, the clock will start back up.
+Matt Albrecht Here's my general understanding of the rule....The ball was not blown 'ready for play' prior to the spike and the clock was properly running because the previous play did not result in a first down or any other reason to stop the clock. Iowa committed a penalty while the clock was running for not being set, therefore the spike never legally occurred meaning that play never happened and the clock was stopped for a non legal purpose. Generally the clock cannot be stopped for an illegal purpose. Therefore I believe the clock was properly started on the ready for play following the assessment for the penalty. I am a high school official and there are many differences between high school, college and pro, but I believe I'm on the right track there. In high school, I would have said something to either the coach and/or both the offense and defense about when the clock would start. I could say, 'the clock will start on the ready for play...' which makes perfect sense, but the kids wouldn't normally understand what it means. In college, probably not. Coaches should know that rule, so should announcers for that matter. Hope this helps.
I still think Saban ran to the SEC to get away from Iowa a team he struggles to beat. This game is probably why his precious Alabama doesn't ever play them.
The original “Minneapolis Miracle” but worse clock management - missed tackle - only needed a field goal - both clocks were under 11 seconds - both were post regular season
The video is from the original ABC Sports coverage, so Gary and Ed were going off of what they were seeing with there own eyes when describing Bob Brooks, this was before phones had video cameras in them to capture those kind of moments.
