Joy Division were their template. Still my Favourite. But they are with the National as good as any else around today . Also like Low, London Grammar and Wolf Alice.
Have liked them since seeing them live around 2003 in Birmingham UK. Not my fav band of all time though . One of them with Wall of Voodoo, The Velvet Underground and Fleetwood Mac and of course the Beatles. Favourite current band = The National . Saw them play a near Two hour set at the Depot, Manchester last Saturday . They were sensational /brilliant. It helped I was only a few feet away from the front of the stage = no moat ! also like LP, London Grammar and Wolf Alice
Here is a little fun fact: Paul Banks stated in a recent interview that this track is his favorite one to perform live from this record. From "Lipps Service" Paul Banks interview on YT.
If anyone's curious, the into starts with three bars of 5/4 and then one bar of 3/4. I think it changes later on but that's the overarching structure. Excellent song!
True! It goes 3/4 on the chorus and the ending too, and switches back to 5/4 for most of the song. Pretty unorthodox for Interpol, yet unreal and fascinating.
"Fate came down on me, we sever together she's really really warm, her center can make automatons breathe" Paul's lyrics never disappoint, what a genius.
Yeah, the lyrics don't suck, either. This track is an absolute cocktail of vocal, 4-string, 6'er, skins, and some pretty solid "engineering and production" with the fill. The changes in cadence and vocal tone are very freestyle in nature. All in all, it is very eclectic and it all WORKS VERY WELL! TREMENDOUS!
here, Here... i was afraid of being disappointed by this album. i've finally moved beyond that fear... and i am completely captivated by THIS song *sigh* #betterlatethannever 😝
When I first heard the song on the album, it was probably the weakest for me, didn't really feel it. But now It's just absolute masterpiece, definitely one of the best not in just this album, but Interpol discography as a whole. Love it so much, the atmoshpere is so unbelievable.
Hauntingly beautiful with some truly rad progressions and an almost ethereal feel. Strangely, it puts me in the mind of some Bauhaus material, with somewhat updated production. Tremendous track!

Absolutely love interpol, I’m getting almost Radiohead vibes from this track who I also love & that’s no shot, their both great but the verse sounds like Thom yorke big time, which is ok with me, we all have inspirations etc I pull from a lot of artist
for strangers like me, lyrics : Step around, don't stand there waving, son On abandoned string Seems to me they took violence for dancing Steady now, who are you betraying?
Interpol refuses to make an album that doesn’t blow ur mind. They’ve never disappointed me. Fav band of all time.
Interpol and Radiohead. Insert either number 1 and 2
You guys are both 100% correct

That was an amazing pattern
@@ElTioWaka I love it!
I figured out the 5/4 but was confused by the 3/4. Thanks for clarifying
The guitar work has often been unconventional with Interpol but that makes it more listenable IMO

Paul said it might be his favourite track on the album. Surely is mine! Love the vocal lines and weird rhythm

A historic achievement . Advances Interpol in sound, lyric, body and soul.
This song is just amazing. I might be crazy, but the guitar intro reminds me of the Beatles and I love it.
