See, I had heard it was based on your proximity to an actual (naturally-generated) cave system. But that code suggests it really has little to do with proximity to any specific system (besides darkness).
I honestly think adding herobrine would benefit minecraft so much. The only thing he'd really do is stalk you and only appear very rarely. And when he does he'll be semi far away but just enough to where you can see him
Imagine a herobrine mode you can enable in the minecraft world settings. He doesn't do anything except stalk you, Change the environment around you and create more sounds. Like imagine hearing sprinting footsteps behind you but there's nothing there.

Maybe it can give you the blindness effect and add a low bass in the background that slowly gets louder and louder to warn you of a stalker in your vicinity

I disabled cave noises because my home is a god dam fortress carved into a mountain, which the game registers as a cave. so I'll be cooking food and the dead souls of tormented children will scream from the darkness of my unfinished rooms. and then one update later and it's been re enabled and I can't figure out how to disable it again. :)
