      I've always through that this option for government elections would be a good idea - it'd force the politicians to actively do something rather than rely on reputation, the leader etc. But, being somewhat cynical, I'm sure the parties would find a way to bypass or exploit it too.
      Plus I don't think it'd work in a place like Australia, where voting is compulsory. Given how much we kinda hate election campaigns, I don't think we'd ever get a set Government, with seats all over going back to the polls constantly. The parties would go broke before all the seats were filled.

    I definitely believe it’s possible to be ‘too rich’ to be prime minister nowadays. Unless you have a Trumpian-esque populism that can endear a billionaire to working people, It’s all too easy to label you as ‘out of touch’. I remember a very condescending phone call on the radio where Rishi tried to empathise with a severely struggling single mother raising 2 kids, he said “I know exactly what you’re going through”, laughable! Now, neither would Johnson, May, Cameron, or even Blair for that matter. However, coming from Sunak made it seem all the more absurd. I think his wealth even makes some conservative MPs uncomfortable, and that’s saying something.

      To be fair it was international law, not their law. it sounds bad, but when I realized the ECHR abolished the death penalty, I stopped caring about international law. If there is a single international law not worth following, the source of all of them all looks questionable and "breaks international law" is no longer damming. I agree with some, but only on a case-by-case basis. So "he really had it coming" it an excuse for breaking international law, depending on said law.

    • @Nasrudith
      @Nasrudith Год назад +2

      @@alex_zetsu International law has always been like the pirate code, anyway: more like guidelines. There is no international police force. Even if their helmets read "UN peacekeeper" they are really peacekeepers of agreeing other nations.

    • @rlosable

      @@alex_zetsu ah, really determined to have the government kill people. Its been proven to be ineffective at deterring crime and doesn't do much besides serve our most base instincts. That being as it may: yes, international law has no explicit enforcement mechanism. Yet, if you don't abide by it, don't expect others to do it either. Makes the world a shit place where nobody can trust anyone.
      Also: If the UK leaves ECHR, then the good Friday agreement is gone, meaning the Irish aren't bound by it either.
      If that still doesn't convince you: Be very sceptical of anyone in power removing any sort of protection of human rights. They want to kick down at someone for cheap points. Today it is the refugees. Tomorrow, it will be another group. At some point, it will likely be you.
      If you can't solve a problem without stripping humans rights off someone, you are either really bad at your job, or using it as a cover for your agenda.

    Using the term "Libertarian" in the context of the US definition of the word is worrying. In Europe the term Libertarianism is almost uniformly described with Libertarian Socialism or Anarchism such as described as an example by George Orwell.

    Tugendhat i was well aware of and respect in general. Sane. Which is better than you can get in this line-up. Mordaunt seemed capable.

    There's no good choice. As a non-UK citizen, I would place my bet on Sunak simply because he handled (his) money pretty well. Hopefully he can handle the economic situation.
