A Dora with RED underside?? I've never heard of such a thing...anyone with info?
I believe Fw-190 D9's from Jagdverband 44 (A German air unit formed during the last months of the war) sported the red-and-white underside... not sure why though? If I had to guess, quite possibly to avoid their own AA gunners firing on their own aircraft, perhaps? Though that's just my theory.
@@shaunwilliams3533 Thanks. I thought it might be a friendly-fire-related thing. Were these the Doras that flew close air support for ME262's taking off and landing at airfields, perhaps? Intriguing.
Duganian united tribes and kingdoms you are absolutely right, sir! They were called the Doras of the Galland Circus, there is even a book that talks about those specific planes. The JV44, or Jagdverband 44 was a squadron formed almost completely by ME-262s piloted by the most experienced pilots in the Luftwaffe, but they had 4 Doras to protect the jets while taking off and landing, since the 262s were much vulnerable in these two situations. They had theyre undersides painted red and white remembering a parrot (they were also called papagei staffel, that means Parrot squadron in German) to avoid their own AA’s shooting them.
