  • This Video is dedicated to Sam Watts who shared how cleaning feels peaceful and gives a sense of control in life. So today we’re going to finish Decluttering in this living room while using the Flylady Method!! I want to get this done so I wasn’t stressed about cleaning around the holidays! I also wanted to continue the conversation on how my ADHD and ANXIETY behaviors made cleaning stressful to me but so many others find peace and satisfaction while cleaning and Decluttering! It’s just another way for us to understand each other in hopes of bringing togetherness ❤️

I just watched the episode where you were so disappointed that this room slipped back a bit after the big declutter. You have come so far in your journey since then. Look how quickly you were able to reset the hottest zone in your house. And I only saw remnants of living in a busy household. No bags of collected random items. What a remarkable transformation in only 3 years. Your dedication in working at this is bearing fruit. Remarkable achievement.

I’ve realized from watching my Mom, Grandma, and aunts that they keep tidy homes by remembering that it’s easier to keep up than to catch up. Flylady teaches that, too, and your ‘don’t put it down put it away’ fits in to that idea. You’re doing so well! 👏👏👏👏Bravo to you and Tyler - and Pepper, for bringing you ‘tossy tossy’ items from the basement! 😁💜💙💚💛🧡❤️🦄

I can't prioritize daily tasks unless everything is clean and minimalistic so my brain can see point A and point B etc, but when everything is clean and open and the room feels bigger, I can think clearer on what tasks to do, but I feel very very exposed because I'm not surrounded in my clutter. I feel accomplished after the clean but also uncomfortable. It's so confusing and frustrating. I've noticed sleeping in a small space like in a bed tent or bed canopy helps because I feel less exposed not seeing all the big empty spaces.

After a long exhausting day of teaching, working out, and daughters year round swim team practice every night & sometimes grocery store I found it easier to take the extra 5 min to put my bag and purse away. Along with putting groceries away and getting homework & supper started. 10 extra minutes after arriving home kept our homes clutter under control. After supper we did dishes and finished homework. Bath and tv and then in bed by 9:30. If we failed to do it even one evening we had extra to do on Saturday’s chore chart. Was it exhausting? Absolutely. But mornings went easier. Life can be hard without a routine. After a couple of months it became second nature. Nothing is perfect but the example was worth it to my adult daughter now. Her job was school, swim & homework. She was home for 18 years and now I miss the busy days. Life is full of lessons.

Tyler is becoming a master of decluttering, cleaning and organizing. Is so great to have those habilities since childhood. You are raising an independent man. Is rhe second time that I've been amazed of how the three of you interact when cleaning. Is so cute. What before was a tortuous chore, now it seems a truly family time, you share a goal and work together towards it. Is so beautiful and the three of you are so cute.

Cleaning as family time is a great insight, because I remember in the last video she talked about dreading mundane tasks, because they took away from family time. Now both can be done together!

I love doing "don't put it down, put it away". I also love this tip I saw online a few years ago called "no wasted trips". Anytime you are going to another room or another part of the house, take as much stuff with you as possible that need to go to that room. If you are going to the kitchen for a snack, take as many things as you can find that need to go to the kitchen or near it. Always have something in your hands. That has been SUCH a big help for me 💖😊

Ohhhh I forgot you asked how cleaning made us feel in your last video! I’m with Sam - Cleaning is control. I have serious melt downs when things are cluttered or dirty, misplaced, a mess ect…I think I’m the opposite side of the compulsive spectrum. Cleaning and organizing is my therapy, but also what keeps me from loosing my mind.

Watching your videos has given me so much insight into my mother's hoarding. She had extreme difficulty letting go of anything and it got worse as she got older. I never understood the why of it but when you talked about childhood trauma, it made so much sense. My mom's brother was declared MIA in WWII and soon after, she became very ill and had to have her thyroid removed. She was 14 at the time. I think those two events were the root cause of her hoarding.

One Suggestion - Moving all the games and school supplies to the shelves next to the fireplace - Moving all the photos into bins to sort. Getting rid of the school supplies and game shelves will reduce cluttering area and also less furniture in the home
    or
Putting up the TV above the fireplace and moving the games cabinet in place of the existing tv cabinet - rearranging the couch to face the fireplace

I was a baby hoarder and have been a minimalist for years. I still struggle to let some things go sometimes but I will tell you over time I have found I get a real buzz out of the decluttering itself... Something so freeing about it that there are days I look around wishing I had stuff to get rid of bc I could use the purge therapy... I also love organizing and tidying in general. I wish I could say the same for cleaning but even though it's easier and more manageable now it's still never gonna be super fun to me to wash dishes and scrub floors. 🙄 Thanks for the content I really needed it today.

It’s like she understands the series about decluttering the basement! 😹 Your lantern display by the fireplace is very nice - just enough - I really like it - I’m usually not into a ton of thematic decorations but I like what you did there; it’s elegant.

Why don't you remove the cubical unit out of the living room? Either make room for it in the basement or move each of the kids' stuff to their rooms. It's a space that is calling for clutter. If you eliminate it, everything will look more tidy and the area will look bigger. Another option is getting doors to at least cover the cubes, it will hide the visual clutter. You will feel a lot more organized and calm since you won't get to see it all the time, especially it's placed right next to the tv.

I love your series and I know you didn't ask for ideas - so feel free to totally disregard - but as an organizer and an ADHD person myself, I wonder if swapping the bench and the cubby unit might work well? The cubby unit would be closer to the dining table , which seems like a great spot to quickly put away art and office supplies, and then the bench would be the first thing you see across from the front door and a spot to sit and put on shoes? The cubby could also have a small tray for incoming mail and keys.

Oh, Time blocking sounds like something that could help me, too. I am curious. Habit tracker do not stick and with to do lists I always forget something or do not estimate the time rightly. I need to have time to go into deep work and time blocking could do it (but how can I organize it without falling into a loophole of following a passion for 10 days in a row and forget everything else?)

I loove Pepper shopping the hoarded basement - giggled so much. Cats are so precious! I've also been thinking, you get given a lot of paper clutter from external sources... like, it keeps coming into your house in large amounts each week. I know a bunch of it is school stuff (unavoidable) and art work the boys have created, but are there any techniques to stop the paper clutter from entering in the first place? Or to lessen it before if gets in your hotspots? Maybe one of your viewers knows some good tips for stopping paper at the door. xox

Well, there's Paperkarma, an app that helps you opt out of receiving catalogs and junk mail (snail mail). Edited to try and make it clear that you specify ones you don't want to receive anymore. It doesn't opt you out of all of these, only the ones you tell it you want to stop.

That’s cute Pepper shopping in the basement lol. Why not have a recycle bin by your table to put flyers and advertisements right away so the bin on your table doesn’t fill up.

As someone with ADHD *and* OCD, I want to remind you and everyone that OCD is absolutely *NOT* synonymous with “clean / tidy.” Using it in that way is like saying a person who misplaced their keys or showed up a minute late is “so ADD / ADHD.”
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is not a term for someone who loves and enjoys keeping a clean home. OCD is a spectrum, just as ADHD is.😘
One person with OCD may spend all day wiping everything ~and I mean EVERYTHING~ down, over and over, and throwing too much away because they simply CAN’T have any specks and splatters or clutter of daily life or they just might succumb to their anxiety - whilst another may feel completely paralyzed with true perfectionism: unable to even start due to the overwhelming reality that it will never, EVER turn out the way our unrealistic standards expect it to, so why even bother trying. “I won’t do it right… I never do anything right…”
**(This has also played a part in my own struggle with hoarding disorder. Not only did I put my identity into so many objects, I couldn’t let go of any even if I tried, for in my mind, they wouldn’t be going to the “right” person. “No one will ever cherish this as much as I do…” )
My main point is that OCD is real, it’s awful, and it’s also a spectrum.
I really appreciate you starting up these conversations.♥️♥️♥️
…Just please be careful using a diagnostic term to describe a behavior.
~~Edited to add: This is the longest comment I’ve ever left you😅 - and it is meant with sooo much love and respect. I want you to know I can’t begin to tell you how proud of and inspired by you I have been all these years. PLEASE keep doing what you’re doing. ✊♥️)
