Such a legend. Love his smooth silky voice. He was an American singer, jazz pianist & actor. He recorded over 100 songs that became hits on the pop charts. He is best known for "Mona Lisa" & "Unforgettable" but he had so many great hits such as "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66", "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons", "There! I've Said It Again", "Nature Boy", "Ramblin' Rose", "Autumn Leaves", "Smile", "Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer" etc.

His timing came from his jazz piano playing an amazing fact he was tone deaf and had to sing everything in the same key. His variety show was in the 50s and his show was the first to go from 15min to 30 and he coined the phrase Madison Avenue is afraid 😨 of the dark you should listen to autumn leaves by Nat sung in french

Another great singer, whose fabulous voice was only discovered, more or less, by accident. As the regular pianist in a combo, Nat was forced to sing one evening when the regular singer failed to show. What a happy, fortuitous discovery that was for the music world! One of the greatest singing voices ever.

Back in the 50s, there were several (I don't know 8 or 9) "girl singers" who were very popular, with their own 'hits'. Many came from the Big Bands which had lost much of their popularity after the War. It was a short time, and a special time before the advent of Rock 'n Roll.

My mother passed away due to dementia, this is a good memory though. My father was strictly a country/western bluegrass listener. With dementia, there are no filters on mom. Dad is pretty deaf. So, of course the music was always LOUD. Mom pops out and says "Could someone please turn that sh*t down!" I asked her what she wanted to listen to. She says for once, just once, put some Nat King Cole on. Shocked me, she was married to him for 65 years and hated country music. LOL! Sad too, I've always liked Nat King Cole. I'd have played it as a teen occasionally instead of The Who or Rolling Stones. 😂

His show was on NBC. It began as a 15 minute show in November 1956, but became popular and was increased to a half hour show. It was sponsored by regional sponsor Rheingold Beer. The show could not get a national sponsor. NBC got big Stars like Harry Belafonte, Peggy Lee, Eartha Kitt, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme ,and many other big names. Alas it was not enough and the show was canceled in December, 1957. Nat later stated that, "Madison Avenue was afraid of the Dark." A sad time in America. Thanks Harri. She may very well have "gotten in trouble." In the mid 1950's Sports Illustrated's cover had Willie Mays, Leo Durocher, and a white lady (who I think owned the San Franciso Giants). Anyway, she had her arm resting on Mays' shoulder. SI got thousands of outraged letters..."an insult to white women everywhere..." Anybody who doesn't think that level of hate has continued to percolate down through the generations is fooling themselves, or still eaten up with hate themselves.

"it's hard to believe it." It should be hard to believe because what you are saying about the racial opposition to the show is total tired b*ll Sh*t! simply and utterly untrue.I watched the show regularly as a kid, enjoying it greatly with my mother and brother. My mother and her friends in the neighborhood all seemed to have a decided crush on this so suave, classy handsome guy. He was a regular matinee idol for sure. I was well aware of the "romantic" aspect of his appeal to the moms in my neighborhood, although I didn't really yet understand it, still it was palpable.. After all that's why the show got on the air to begin with; because the majority of audiences white and black loved Nat King Cole, his suave, elegant looks and demeanor and his inimatbly beautiful smooth insinuating vocal sound and phrasing. I don't remember having any interest in anything regarding his being black. Nor did I ever hear a single syllable spoken about it one way or the other from anyone at any time. He was one of a handful of top pop singers who was widely loved and sought after. I did hear years later that it was in the South, the ignorant backward South - (where incidentally Catholics like myself were then often viewed as "unAmerica" or worse) where there was stauch opposition to the show , and since it was a national show of course, many advertisers whose only interest is in their bottom line gradually felt impelled to withdraw their advertisements. But it must be understood that the vast majority of American's enthusiastically welcomed Nat into their homes on a weekly basis and were deeply disappointed I'm sure when he was cancelled, and little did they know the reason why he had been cancelled. I assure you the real reason would not have been reported..We are a hugh country with a number of different region, regions which are sharply divide when it come s to certain issues. It is entirely wrong and reprehensible of you to paint all Americans with the same broad brush as you do here.with this hurtful slander of yours.
