That's my Daddy at 4:55. I miss him so much, he passed last Christmas. He absolutely adored this band, and met so many great people at these concerts. They completely shaped his worldview, set him down an adventurous course in life, and it has made mine amazing. Nice to see the band getting recognition at such a prestigious level.
The greatest, most talented, and most original band of all time! Their music should be cherished and treasured as a gift to humanity! God Bless Jerry and Phil (and Pigpen, Brent, and Keith)!
These guys got some mileage out of life. Thats for sure. Love them, love that Parrish has his story hour on RUclips and Sirius XM. It never gets old. After seeing them hundreds of times with Jerry, I remember about 10 years after he passed RatDog doing a concert in Golden Gate Park, and I just remember thinking that the music is timeless. It reverberates through time, space, and dimensions that very few other people have been able to accomplish. They are the modern day Mozarts, Wagners, & Beetovens. Thank you for a really good time!
@@Jazzywazz I'm curious how you managed to see at least 150 Grateful Dead shows without Jerry. That's something that definitely deserves a big lol! I didn't realize Jerry missed so many days of work. 😜🤏🏻
I saw them at the 11::00 show at the Fillmore East. They played so long, that when the concert was over, I walked out to sunlight the next day. One of the best concerts ever.
Those days were over by 76, it’s now a money grab at the Vegas sphere aka the clown show of corporate nostalgia. I caught Jerry at the palladium for a hells angels benefit, sun was up after that one too.
Saw the Dead 1971 at the Fillmore East. Went to the late show started at midnight We got out at about 5:30 in the morning They played from midnight to 5:30 a.m. with one 20 minute break .
Let's not forget Keith Godchaux, Brent Midland, Phil Lesh, and last but certainly not least, Jerry Garcia. Rest in Paradise, gentlemen. You are all missed, and influenced the magic in your own rights.
This band has been a major part of my life since I first saw them at age 19. I saw 30 shows between 1984 and 1994. Every good thing in my life that I have is because of them. I met my wife through an old friend that I used to travel to shows with. She and I met through a most coincidental circumstance that literally would never have happened without the Grateful Dead. I hope their music lives for centuries.
Clown show of respect, respect was the last thing the dead were interested in . Garcia would have been embarrassed and not showed up. Our government is joke. Orange man vs DMV lady ? Case closed. Nice while it lasted.
In the late 80’s/early 90’s my best friend from college was a hardcore DeadHead and I was into Pop Metal (Bon Jovi, Dokken, Ratt) and he dragged me to a couple GD shows but I simply didn’t get it. The whirling dervish dancing, the Hallucinogenic Intoxicants, TyeDye T-Shirts. Why, I thought. I understood the historical appeal and the band’s connection to the 60’s but not the incredible loyalty the GD’s followers bestowed on the band. It required years of opening my mind to bands other than Poison and Maiden to allow the brilliance of the GD to sink in and leave a lasting impression. These guys made and continue to make amazing music which merges respect for their musical legacy with unrestrained, exploratory improvisation creating a product unique and unrepeatable in the American music scene. True Legends all of them.
In the late 80's and early 90's I worked for Digital Equipment Corporation, 125k employees around the world with one of the biggest networks on the planet. We had a predecessor to social networks in house, some of the other deadheads that I met there are still friends and we are still in touch. We traded tapes using the interoffice mail system. It was a glorious time. "The Grateful Dead is like licorice, not everyone likes it, but those who do, really like it" "Grateful Dead shows are like baseball, it can be slow but it's never quite the same, then there's a moment of magic. That's why you go to as many shows as you can"
First Dead show was in 75. Dozens of more over the years. When Jerry passed, that journey ended. But the music and spirit continued. And it still lives today.
Glad to see it I've seen them many times in all yheir forms. Well deserved! Now its time for the Kennedy Center to wake up and put the Allman Brother Band in next year! They more than deserve it!
I had so much fun at their concerts over the years. There really was nothing else like them. And I’ve been to many other band’s concerts too. They definitely were a San Francisco treasure that became a world treasure. I’m glad they are being recognized in the Kennedy honors.
200+ show Deadhead here - love, love, love where being on the bus most of my life took me. Thought they were pretty strange the first time I heard them, but something about what they had going on drew me back and back and back. I always say to people who scratch their heads that the Dead are like a joke - if you don't get it, no amount of explaining will ever make you laugh...

I tried to quit drinking for 10 years. I started going to shows and opened my mind to how much more there was in the world. That was 34 years ago, haven't had a drink, and discovered a talent for painting, and songwriting. Love their music and spirit.
As Promotion Director for Monterey’s KMBY 107 Rocks, I had the unforgettable privilege to work with the promoter, band, and the outdoor venue at Laguna Seca Raceway. Any of you Deadheads at that one in the mid 80’s? The magic of Bruce Hornsby opened, and tie-died shirts floating amongst the crowd😊.
If you go to the Dead & Co. recent announcement of their second residency at the Sphere in Vegas this Spring, you may notice a black and white photo of hippies dancing blissfully in Steinbeck country. That image was taken at Laguna Seca by Jay Blakesberg. in 87 or 88.
Amazing when Bob said Garcia visits him in dreams "all the time." I lost my best friend of 30 years in 2020 and I've only seen him three times in dreams. We saw our one and only Jerry show together in 1995, miss that dude so much.
It’s mind boggling to me that the Grateful Dead didn’t win a Grammy for Terrapin Station because that song is a masterpiece. How about a lifetime achievement #grammy in 2025? #grammies #gratefuldead

Very nice interview. Appreciate the 'observation' (s) that there was/is a certain 'lingo' to it. It sort of evolved. Liked the comment about leaving room for happy accidents. Bill is absolutely right about allowing the music to be shared freely. It helped put them on every map between here and Tahiti. Interesting about Jerry introducing a new sheepdog song. I just had to surrender my German Shepherd when he bit me badly and put me in the ER. He was a great dog but got too aggressive. We're all still learning. Thank you for sharing -

First show was ‘72 Hartford, CT. A Dead Head ever since. Well over 150+ shows, including spin offs of JGB, Rat Dog, Further, Phil & Friends, etc. Highlights included Watkins Glen & seeing JGB on Fisherman’s Wharf. The band that day included Donna Jean, Keith, John Kahn & Maria Muldaur…a benefit for Save the Whales. Sure do miss seeing the good ole Grateful Dead, but thankfully, their music never stops.

The Dead was more then a band they were an experience. You were lucky if you got to have the experience. I'm 72 and I got to have the experience.
If you haven't already, check out Goose. Rick will be the next stand in for Jerry Garcia when the time comes.
The dead did the same thing with John Mayer. They slowly brought him and let him jam with Phil Lesh. Well, Rick is on that same path. Just wait...
