- This is the COMPLETE (15 min) and 1st appearance of Jerry Garcia & Bob Weir on the David Letterman Show, April 13th 1982.
It was on April 13th 1982, during the Grateful Dead's Spring Tour, on a night-off between shows at Nassau and Glens Falls, NY.
The introduction is funny with Letterman teaching Jerry how to play "Proud Marry" on acoustic guitar...
Afterwards, Jerry and Bobby revealed terrific humor in describing SF in the "early years", the GD community, "Dead Heads" et al...
Hilarious and classic stuff.
In the middle, they perform two acoustic songs :
5:55 "Deep Elem Blues" and then, after a break ...
12:39 "Monkey & The Engineer"
PS : Bobby seemed to have a terrible "cold" ...
Weir is amazing- he's freaking high as a kite, then just tears it up playing and singing. True pro!
I think he must have had the "frog in a milk of glass" line running through his brain the entire interview and once he got to say it, he checked-out. But you are correct, high as a kite. Weir the ever "merry prankster" later in his life says "I never did drugs beyond the acid tests".
Bobby was on L such a large % of public appearances. Fucking legend!
Dave said we need to take a station break so Bob can blow his nose...
@@brandonalan8884he's just on about four grams of coke here
Garcia is so natural you can't even tell how high he is.
Beautiful sentiment about letting fans tape the shows. "When we're done with it they can have it". And Weir's comment is absolutely true too- "If we ever make a real good record they'd probably buy it anyway... and the tapes bring back memories and stuff"
This to me epitomizes the Grateful Dead- freely sharing the fun and magic of their music.
True artists
I couldn’t agree more with this...they were the true spirit of those times and, as it turns out, incredibly far sighted.

The Dead were so refreshing because they had no commercial intent or chase for the dollar. Their chase was for great music and times and feeling.
Yawn. Until their dissolution and the reality of having to pay for a living became all too real.
@@JasonDebly Childish fantasies and far too many kids commenting.
This is not just music, it is vital American history.
History..yes. vital, not so much

True
I was fortunate enough to see 11 shows with Jerry. He even waved at me once! Nassau Coliseum, we got tickets and the seller said, "They're behind the stage." We said, "Hey, we'll take anything." And they were literally BEHIND the stage! It was just us back there with a security guard. We had to move around to see the band members through the scenery. Then Bobby said, "We're gonna take a short break, we'll be right back," and they walked right under us. I yelled "Jerry!", and he looked up, smiled, and waved. I miss him every day. #ThankYouJerry
Dryden Cole LoL I saw the Dead at the coliseum too. The one show I went to that my daughter is jealous of me for.
That’s the kind of memories that you’ll have with you forever 👍🏻👍🏻😎
Me toooooo🌛🌟🌜
49 times under my belt. And I was only 17 in '95.
Fantastic life and times of a teenage runaway. ❤
I wonder why im a Dead Head then I relate my Dad probably has a ticket stub for every show they were ever at in America lil
Love how Jerry realizes Bobby is out of it and just takes over the interview, bailing out his pal
probably though,weir's just a kook& jerry'sNOT
They are both tripping...jerry is keeping it together better but they are both melting into the carpet.
@@josiahlee1982 There acid taking days were far behind them at this point. Prolly a combo of blow and ludes for Bobby and Jerry's exploits have been well documented.
@@jasondiamond7737 Bob didn't do heroin like gerry, huh? I am also assuming he did bot use drugs via syringes? Gosh, I'm a millennial and I'd kill to try some luudes.
@@gabbyc816 nah bob was Jerry's bag man on tour for awhile because he could be trusted not to dip and not to give Jerry too much. Obviously I wasn't there so I just speculate based off of my own chemical romance. I really don't think Bob used needles as a method of delivery. When you watch the live shows multiple times you can feel the ebb and flow of the quality of drugs during certain stretches of tours. Sometimes they play really slow but tight. So I think ludes. Sometimes Bob is jaw jacking and pressing to find the vocal harmony, I think mediocre blow. Sometimes they are on fire hitting on all cylinders, I think hi quality blow with a bit of downer to take the edge off. Lol I managed to catch Jerry live 5 times in the early 90s but it was so wildly popular and packed with people, just not a comfortable space for an introvert like myself. I was more into kicken it with my friends, doing drugs, eating good food and talking with girls outside in the lot. It was only five years ago that I started to understand what the music and lyrics were all about. Well Blues for Allah did bring me to a great head space on new years day 2000. I was basically ok with the prominent thought of suicide. Had too much of four or five things including lsd and crystal at a y2k rave. Got home nervous breakdown followed I thought wtf am I to do? Then I remembered I had picked up blues for Allah at a thrift store on vinyl so I threw it on. The arrangements just seemed so complex and gorgeous to me, I remember thinking you know what Jason you're okay you're not a bad guy you do deserve happiness. All big eyed and smile crying. I'm sure there was a breakup involved with some female along the line that led to it but I took off into some great things after that. Coach soccer for 10 years learn how to Mix house music. Excelled at that. Played out at least 100 times a year. Met a lot of people. Discovered roots reggae, developed my own method of seamlessly mixing riddims x riddims it then became my mission to bring roots reggae to as many heads as possible.. had 8 different club residencies mixing my reggae 45's over the next decade...blah blah blah why I'm telling you this I have no idea.. well I mix Hard drugs so I rant on occasion. Hopefully someone finds this entertaining.
Jerry...not a greedy man..unheard of in today's music business..
The acoustic side of the band is INCREDIBLE and VERY underrated. Reckoning is such a great album and is chock full of great acoustic Dead.
Before "MTV unplugged"...more than a decade before I might add...was this.
Meanwhile the rest of New York media was spewing forth Michael Jackson and Madonna who were only good for about five songs and a dance routine.
Talk about "the death of New York City as even relevant" would be an understatement and especially after this ahem "number" ahem.
Yes grew up in Lucas valley San Rafael Marin. Played reckoning for my mom who was from Sweden. Never an American citizen and she loved it. My dad too who was born in 1914. They gave me fifty bucks to see Jerry at Warfield. My first show was Cal expo. Tripping. Brent had his two daughters on his keyboard. Will never ever ever never forget that. A band beyond description
One of my fave acoustic GD albums
I love the (almost) acoustic version of Friend Of The Devil from Dead Set. One of my favorites.
Workingmans dead is a great example too. One of my personal favorites.
Jerry is so cheerful. and Bobby is so spaced out. what an awesome team !!
I love how Jerry dishes it out Letterman re: the Ashtray. Priceless.
Sending love to you all from Patti Cornell
Nobody is like Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir. They kick a massive ass.
"More fun than a frog in a glass of milk" -Bob
and
No need to elaborate further
😂😂😂
Bobby's rhythm guitar playing is absolutely second to none.
And he’s spun to heaven here too 😂😂
@@gucketjug that's how he prefers to play lol
Shows you how amazing WEIR is! Everyone caps on his singing etc. but this guy is like an Eintien of back up guitar. Jazz, blues, country, and all the rest. Weir is very much underated.
Completely underrated as a rhythm guitarist. People have to realize how hard it is playing between two virtuoso's (Lesh & Garcia). Weir figured out how to fill the spaces between.
He's underrated in everything. Some of the most iconic Dead songs were Weir. Truckin? Throwing Stones? Estimated Prophet? He doesn't get the credit he really deserves. As much an important part of Grateful Dead as Jerry was (no disrespect to Jerry at all).
The man doesn't amazing solo show as well good to see him in my own little happy park it was one of the greatest shows ever
"When we're done with it, they can have it" This is why I love Jerry so much. It was all about giving to the audience.
NOW i want enchiladas
He represented San Francisco sure but Jerry and Bob also represented a lot of the southern music culture of country folk, blues ,soul,etc....Jerry could play the hell out of Appalachian Banjo Music ..He was a monster of all of it.
old and in the way.
Masters of “Americana”.
But they are from the Bay area, and exemplified the cultural revolution that happened there.
And strong Bluegrass connection/influence.
Love his pedal steel with NRPS
Does anybody really have any idea how hard it is for two guys to pick up wooden guitars and entertain us like this? No you don’t! Very special people right here! Completely unique and beautiful!
The clip makes me realize how much I miss Jerry. His quiet presence just made you feel good. Bob sounded quite good on guitar and vocals, BTW.
So true. He was a srsly sweet person.
Bob had presence, i should know since i spent a weekend with them in 1969!
The greatest and most important american rock n roll band.
100%
No
Slim Dizzle them and The Beach Boys.
Add Velvet Underground and P-Funk and you get the most important American bands. GD only gets you so far. They are no doubt amazing.
I totally get what everyone here is saying about each of these bands, all great and important in their own right, but ultimately art is subjective and so what I think the original comment is referring to is the unique cultural phenomenon that is the Dead. They are unlike any band that has existed before or since.
I swear Jerry intentionally gets himself lost in a solo just for the fun of finding his way out. Like Houdini locking himself in cuffs.
thefieldpiece a
Yah I think your right. He starts knowingly and finishes new every time.
Geez what an analogy
where you thinking he's lost? that's pretty close to most of the solos he played over that.
Performing without a net! No one better.
"I was gonna apologize for not having any memory.. pretty sure it was fun though" Amen
Why is that a good or funny thing?
Pork fried rice I did then and do now love Jerry and his love for fun.
@@cmhardin37 I think that it means that Jerry lived really well throught these years. If he didn't, he would've have memory. Remembering a dull life is much much easier than a fullfilled and thrilled life I might say...
A duet with two guitars and no back-up. What a treat!
Sweet!!
The balls for bob to be zooted on national tv. Great stuff
i love being in that frame o'mind ...but on national tv? ...they're pro's. i stumble on to this video from time to time and it always makes me smile, from the guitar lesson skit, the interview and the performances. the GD were special and i miss seeing them. RIP Jerry.
There is no substitute for Jerry. He and Weir sound so good together like no one else can. Long love the dead
Bob is just so insanely out to lunch even Jerry knows it hahaha
Ah this always puts a smile on my face. Rest in peace Jerry.
11:25 Bobby sees something no one else does : D
Nah, he's just reacting to Letterman's question about the chemistry...
Just needed to "blow his nose", eh?
Well Duh, Ever Listened to his music. XP
He got hit with a huge coke drip lol
August West .. he sees dancing bears? Or nah
Garcia’s ‘ashtray’ joke makes Letterman realize he’s dealing with a formidable intellect. JG was extremely clever.
edsnowden yeah he was
There was a funny skit he did on Letterman a few years later.
Him and Dave are playing Scrabble and Dave lays the word Truck down and on JG’s turn he adds ‘in’ to Truckin
“Jerry your always doin that, I quit”
Something like that, I thought it funny
Yeah...genius response...please. If that's the sign of a formidable intellect I'm a damn rocket scientist.
@@samsmith4216 what brought you here?

this is amazing. when bob freezes up after his 'frog and a glass of milk' comment is hilarious. he's clearly sooo high and watching this while high is simply ridiculous hahaha
Bob's handling his shit really well in my opinion. lol
Definitely dropped before this taping. Lol!
"If the head fits, wear it..."
@@joshuanattinger9694 I feel like it may have been coco puffs because of the nose wiping and Letterman referencing it but I could totally see it your way as well.
Bobby always ‘handles his shit’ well.
@@brianlockwood3588 he definitely does not have the energy of someone coked up.
Bob is so expressive when he sings, I never noticed how many faces he makes!! so funny.
that's one way to look at it, hahaa
What I liked about Letterman, he always had fun with his guests
IF THE HEAD FITS WEIR IT
+ibrake4butterflies bob was so fucked up in this video lmao
Seems like he has a ...uh...cold.
no
What the ego?
The best line of the vid...and you improved on it!
"if the head fits, wear it"
fantastic
Jerry's comments on fans taping their shows.... "The shows are never the same, ever. So when we're done with it they can have it". Haha! Oh he was just the best:)
Dave is cool. Having these guys as guests fully confirms his legacy as my fave tv host of all times. Nothing compares to you, Dave.
I love this version of Dee Pellum Blues.
Also Jerry’s line “It hurts” during that opening Proud Mary bit was hilarious.
watch this interview every few years, love it! bob is out of his mind but still maintains performance, jerry is a savior
I watch it every night
I cannot emphasize enough how happy this made me!!!
Bobby's unique style of playing never ceases to amaze. It was wonderful in the context of the Dead -- a large and loud band -- but what a joy to hear it more out in the open here. These guys are just so great.
This is why I love the internet!
To find gems like this that someone had the foresight to upload which reminds me why I miss and love The Dead so much!!!!
Bobby is awesome. He looks like he's about to take a trip to the Mars hotel, and yet sounds incredible when it's time to play.
I was in the Meadowlands at my first Dead concert this week in 1978... And what a long strange trip it's been. Miss those days.
I always laugh how tv cameras always manage to zoom to the rhythm guitar during a lead guitar solo.
Even more annoying is when they cut away in the middle of a good guitar solo and start zooming in on one of the background instruments, such as the bass guitar or the drummer (a good example is the 1970 live version of 'Proud Mary' by CCR).
You're so right - except that it makes me cry, not laugh. Seriously, how unmusical do you have to be to do something like that!
Oh, but golly gee, Weir's guitar is so much prettier! It sparkles, it shines, it has decorations. I suppose that's the cameraman's thinking, if any thinking is involved. These guys, cameramen, are visually oriented, not aurally. Sad but true.
.
One of the most egregious and persistent examples of this is the first Crossroads guitar festival organised by Eric Clapton etc. It's meant to be about the guitar, for pete's sake, and yet as soon as the solo kicks in, the camera person/director cuts to the rhythm guitarist or even the bass player. Just incredible.
There really isn't a bad time to Zoom in on Bobby's guitar, solo going on or no. After all, it's what Jerry was listening to during his solos. Maybe listen to what you're seeing, and explore another facet.
God Bobby and Jerry played so well together. A guitar partnership that lasted 30 years
I have a suspicion that Bob dosed up before the show. Those are tripping eyes, no doubt! And the words he's saying.....trippy confusion. Frog in a glass of milk? HA!!!!
Cocaine is one helluva drug!
Justin Gaudette
Steven perdue square
Hung Over nah he keeps wiping his nose. Blow.
And well, it was 1982...
Even for a letterman performance they had to improvise, it’s just what they do, love it
"Monkey and the Engineer" is actually a song JG and Bob played back in the early 60s when they were Mother Mcree's Uptown Jug Champions. Look em up!
In 66 & 67 after the Fillmore Garcia would come back with us to 1400 Montgomery St. and keep playing. I don't remember ever seeing him not playing. We all would be puffing the weed and drinking wine while Jerry was playing. His playing would get our attention, all talking would stop, our attention focused on him, and he would look up smiling at us. He would know he had us.
I just happen upon this interview on its 39th anniversary and I’m absolutely floored by Jerry. He’s such a kind-hearted soul that radiates calm and loving energy. What a man.
Miss the days... Some of the best times of my life were had in the presence of Garcia, Bobby and the rest of the folks.
Hi.
When you think the song is done the dead always have 4 more verses. Great interview.
Thank you for this video. I had never seen it before and really enjoyed it. How could anyone not love Jerry? His smile and laugh was infectious and their music enevitably takes you to a happy place.
I love RUclips just for bringing me back to the joy of the Dead. Thank you ☮️
Thank goodness this was broadcast late at night so the kiddies didn't get corrupted. Thanks for the trip back in time!
Used to stay up late when I was like 12 listen to Letterman's show. I remember this one forever. Jerry n Bob*****
I'm tripping myself right now.. and bobby is most definitely tripping. idk how he does it but that's amazing
+GratefulDeadHead023 Yeah...that's what I thought too. His eyes had that glazed over off-centered look to 'em.
Weed, coke nor alcohol can usually replicate that look. It's usually a trademark of hallucinogenics ;)
+GratefulDeadHead023 he really looks like someone under the influence of psychedelic's but i mean why the hell would u be taking acid to david letterman late night recording? I mean come on. But who knows...
Bobby has looked like that since 1965. It's called "being permadosed". He was the original Space Cadet. Read the early stories about him.....
Love this clip - thanks!
Ivan Raskolnikov
"Permadose" I like. Great name for a band!! I'll have to look into your claim. Thanks!!
+LisaDawnn I've been permadosed since 1979 or so myself, so I know the look well....Yeah both Bobby and Jerry are almost certainly coked up in this video - but his demeanor and speech have been like that since he blew his mind as a teen. Even in an age of total spaciness Bobby was legendary for being spaced out.... :)
I clicked on this to see the interview. Wasn't sure if I would see them play. The music sure made me smile when they did.
We count ourselves lucky to have lived in interesting times.
that was6 months ago
Miss the Grateful Dead, also miss interviewers like David Letterman. Thanks for the chance to see these guys again..
For you Dead Heads. If you haven't seen The Dead on Playboy after dark in '69, you must watch it.
toscodav they made LSD punch and everybody had a frying time
I heard there was acid in the coffee
Wish I could go to one more Dead concert with Jerry😭
35 years after, we , from Spain, remember the first only concert in Barcelona, always in ours lifes
i cannot think of another pair of musicians who understood each other so well mentally and musically.
I wasn't a Deadhead as a kid but now I love their music and their free spirit! They made music because they loved making music, not for the money. They had wonderful attitudes. RIP Jerry Garcia
The thing is, the "Dead Family" became a burden to Garcia and the thinking is it pushed him further and further into his addiction to keep it rolling. He once said If he could play one show with the dead, one show with the garcia band and one show with grisman and company each week, he would be happy as a clam. The Dead tours become a grind to keep the extended operation rolling.
Miss Dave so much. The world is not the same without Jerry.
That Deep Elem Blues is wonderful
I'm 59 now, and I've been to see these guys more times than I can remember. Literally.
Man I miss going to see The Dead some of the best times and memories of my life-Southern California mid to late 80's-Jerry Garcia will always be the King to me-his presence and aura was magical-I see that now after seeing hundreds of other musicians and bands over the years none of them had his magical gifts just by being there. You never realize when you were doing it that those were the best times you will or would ever have.Jerry Garcia lives forever and his spirit will never die!!
It's true. Have seen hundreds of shows- some incredibly fine players to more recent good, hard playing bands and no one could hold a space like Garcia. It was collective and yet at the same time entirely personal. A real spiritual experience. He is a special Buddha of all three types hoped for in this world 1) liberates via word 2) liberates via music and art 3) liberates via creation of sacred space in which self realization is possible.
❤
👍
Never heard just Jerry and Bob sing a song together before , "Deep Elem Blues" sounds great, Bobby plays acoustic well.
I miss Jerry Garcia😢
I remember watching this live. I was 18 and just getting into the Dead. Now I'm 55 and looking forward to seeing some Dead and Company shows later this year. Too bad Jerry's no longer with us. Thanks for posting.
Library Dude Dark Star Orchestra (DSO). More authentic Dead show experience. They’re reviewed as “playing the Dead better than the Dead”. And you don’t get all the John Mayer fans pretending to be deadheads.
I was at Nassau the night before and Glens Falls the next night..Ha ha....What an awesome time
I absolutely love these guys. They evoke such positivity and great feelings. Us ‘heads have a lot to thank them for. Instantly you can put on their music and your day is better/great. God bless and love these guys, RIP Jerry Garcia. ❤️🎵
Bobby was 35 looking 20, Garcia was 40 looking 70
I think they both look great 😊
Jerry was getting into heroin and Bob wasn't. Jerry should have stuck to cannabis and psychedelics.
Clarence Russell I think the whole band got into heroin at points. Maybe Bobby was the only one who didn’t
No, he looks 35 alright.
That excellent physical condition he's maintained his entire life makes him look youthful.
Very so often, I come back to this...I watch and listen and it makes me so happy...Jerry, Bobby, and Dave...does it get any better????? That intro alone make me grin and giggle!!!
Got off work, went to a fellow Dead lovers home and watched this mesmerized with fellow DoD guards and Dead lovers. Never forget that night.. Magic.
Wow! Just seeing these 2 guys here and sounding so good and making it look easy. I miss it , nothing like it now!!
13:14 i was reading all the comments and wasnt sure he was tripping till right here
His eye's were bugging....huge pupils......was thinking same thing when I watched it....
F*cking great!! Thanks so much for posting. And to think, I thought the boys were burned out it in 1980! Bob and Jerry look so happy here. Tooted up, for sure, as many times before when I was there... RIP, Jerry.
If i drink 3 bootles of beer i can't play an Am on guitar, these guys fried to death playing like this pure talent
Sometimes I just sit and listen to the boys play... It's so soothing. This came on my RUclips and I send I'm sure it's amazing.
Jerrt, I miss you and love your legacy.
My friends and I followed the Dead for over five years and made it inside for more than 55 shows. I still have the tickets to this day.
These two guys really knew how to share space and play off each other as both guitar players and vocalists, and they still swing like crazy even without a drummer... or two.
A big thank-you for compiling, and for posting. This is great, Bobby and those facial expressions, too funny. and Jerry, what a wit. How I miss you being on this earth.

This definitely going in my favorites list, thanks for sharing.
My first dead show was by absolute accident. Shoreline amphitheater California summer 1991 first time ever took mushrooms and somewhere in that wackiness I was helping change the diaper on a baby who’s parents adopted me and we toured the dead together for two years. Changed my life forever. I miss you guys.
Bob has got some glassy, lively, and bug eyed eyes!

This is Brilliant!!! Thank you for posting!!
can I like this 20 times ! love and miss you Jerry!!
You know, I'm 75 years old..played in bands in California primarily for most of my life..the bands that sat well and pleased everybody where the ones where friendship was evident among the members..this friendship was transmitted thru us to the folks who would come to see us and there was always fun and pleasure for all..never more evident in watching these two play together..no pretense, no bullshit..just two friends playing guitar and having fun..great!
Right on bro! They were my heyday years as well! I grew up 30 minutes from the Philly Spectrum, and was down there for every tour... Saw two shows in 85, all three in March 86 (red shirt Jerry) etc etc etc ... wish I had a time machine to go back, like totally man...!
Thank you for uploading this .. Love from India
Great interview. Epic. Two of the coolest musicians ever.
