    Colin's era was one of many times when the show runners dropped the ball. Here was the first time we had an actor who truly wanted the part, fantasized about it, and finally had his dream come true. And the BBC screwed him over in almost every possible way. But even given everything he had against him, he pulled off an incredible job. I remember an early interview I read back when he became the Doctor where he said he wanted to bring some of William Hartnell's character into his performance, which excited me. And he did just that, between his voice mannerisms, his gruff exterior, and his outrage over injustice. He started off as arrogant and even cowardly, then gradually remembers what it means to be the Doctor, whether we like it or not.

    If I had to pick three only TV stories for the 6th Doctor:
    Attack of the Cybermen- good character development for the 6th Doctor, Commander Lytton was a good character to bring back and I like what they did with him and how he went out. Some stuff looks pretty good, the violence I feel is mostly justified here and the Cybermen are pretty well portrayed.
    Revelation of the Daleks- I love this story, it's my favourite of the three 80s Dalek stories. It's more a Davros story than a Dalek story but Terry Malloy is my favourite Davros and he and Colin play well of each other. The concept of a funeral planet taking the dead and turning them into Daleks or food to cure famine is horrifying but gives a great insight into Davros and his way of thinking. It also has quite possibly the most bizarre cliffhanger in Doctor Who.
    Vengance on Varos- to everyone who says Doctor Who shouldn't be political, this story does it right. The message isn't exactly delivered subtly but it is central to what the story deals with and is still relevant today. It's a brutal and demented world we're seeing and there is a lot of violence but it feels earned, its not there just for the sake of it. Sil is a great villain, he's much fun to hate.

  • @Seth-fg4ho

    Thanks for giving Colin some love! Season 22 is actually one of my favorites simply for how whacked-out it is. Colin is over-the-top and entertaining, and every episode has something utterly bizarre in terms of Doctor Who lore. I agree with all of your picks, although I really do want to place The Two Doctors on that list. Agree with everything you said regarding Attack of the Cybermen. My list would probably be:
    1. Revelation of the Daleks
    2. The Two Doctors (I just love how weird the whole thing is,. The bizarre two Doctor team up, the appearance of Patrick and Frasier, and the sociopathic villains. Some really funny humor and good location shooting. Colin looks better in that vest than he does the in coat.
    3. Either Vengeance on Varos or Attack of the Cybmermen.

    Met Colin a year ago at Comic Con and he signed my DVD cover of The Two Doctors. I dressed as Troughton and my Mum dressed as Colin and I think she was the only dressed like him there.
    I asked him what his favourite story was to get an idea of which to buy next but he said The Two Doctors so I’m glad you’ve done this video. Now I know all the good 6th Doctor stories.

  • @Quicksilverfan69
    @Quicksilverfan69 3 года назад

    My Top 3:
    3. Trial of a Timelord (I find it underrated and to be fair it is perhaps everyone's favourite love or hate story, love the return of Sil, the Valeyard and the investigation into the ethical questions of the Doctor's meddling through time)
    2. Revelation of the Daleks (probably my favourite of any of the 80s Dalek stories, even moreso than Remembrance. I just love the sheer eerieness and how deafening even the quiet scenes are, and it is such a weird ass episode, rivalling Kinda and Claws of Axos)
    1. Vengeance of Varos (just the outright social commentary, and how insane the politics is, and also Sil is probably the final well-known classic villain, unless one counts the Rani or Gods of Ragnorok).
    Bubbling: Attack and Two Doctors.

    Totally agree with your choices. I would find it tough to choose my top 3 from the Colin Baker era as each story is good in it's own distinct way. Also pleased to hear that (like me) you like the "darker stories" side of the 1980's.
    I would love for you to do a 'Favourite Top 10 Scenes' series from each of the doctors too... that could be interesting 😉

    Wingy, here's an idea for a video. How about a countdown of the top classic series missing episodes you would most like to see returned to the archives. Top 5, top 10, up to you. Would you prefer to see almost complete stories fully completed or a wider variety of single episodes from completely missing stories returned? I think it would be an interesting one.

    3. Vengeance on Varos (the acid bath scene is pure black humour "forgive me if I don't join you")
    4. Terror of the Vervoids. (controversial I know but it's worth it to see a bunch of plants killing people)

  • @pjgathergood6987
    @pjgathergood6987 4 года назад

    I haven't seen most Colin Baker stories in MANY years / or ever (I keep promising myself to do a 'every story' run one year soon) , but 'Vengeance of Varos' always sticks in my mind as one of '80s Who's greatest. I actually got an old VHS copy being sold off for a quid from our local library circa 2000, and watching it even then it struck me how "ahead of it's time" it was on it's satire of reality TV... 20 years later and it's even more topical.
    And whilst Sil isn't the strongest in terms of "the big villain" gravitas, in terms of his concept and realisation on screen, again he ranks right up there in '80-era Who IMO.

    Colin is so underated as the Dr. Outside The Twin Dilemma and Timelash I loved his stories. My favs were Vengeance on Varos, Revelation of the Daleks and the Two Doctors. But I must say the best villian that came out of Colin's time was the Rani. I thought she was brilliant and had so much potential as a villian. I wish she was introduced earlier. Kate O'Mara was amazing in the role.

    Oh and can people get over the acid bath scene.
    1. Revelation of the Daleks (Was Davros ever so manipulative and evil?) Orzini is awesome and the whole feel of this is so
    fantastically grim. The glass Dalek with Natasha having to watch her father turn into a dalek begging for her to kill him is
    probably as dark as Dr. Who ever got.

  • @ftumschk
    @ftumschk 5 лет назад +1

    1. Revelation of the Daleks
    2. Vengeance on Varos
    3. Attack of the Cybermen
    I put Revelation first because it's possibly Eric Saward's cleverest story, which gives us no less than five double-acts, which isn't something you often see: Orcini/Bostock; Kara/Vogel; Takis/Lilt; Natasha/Grigori; the Doctor/Peri. What's particularly pleasing is that all five double-acts are written and acted beautifully, and there's some fine acting elsewhere, too. Clive Swift is wonderful as the loathsome Jobel, a darkly funny portrayal played dead straight, as it should be. Terry Molloy gets some great lines across as Davros, some of them laced with dark humour. I even like the DJ, but then I'm an Alexei Sayle fan! The visuals - sets and location filming - are remarkably good for a low-budget show, and Graeme Harper's direction is excellent as usual.

    1. The Ultimate Foe (I'm a bit biased, as I really love the Valeyard as a villain. Also there is Glitz, getting hypnotized by the Master and more :D)

  • @davidbull7210

    Right. I agree wholeheartedly with Vengeance being your favourite. It's superb television (acid baths and all) however I would place Revelation very closely behind that (it's a tough call) and my third would probably be Mark of the Rani (mostly because of the beautiful location work, flawed though it is). The Two Doctors is a hugely bloated and indulgent televisual feast that unfortunately falls apart on even light inspection. As for The Trial of a Time Lord, it's very hard to say as I consider this 14-part series a different beast altogether. If I had to choose two of the four stories I'd probably go for Vervoids and Mindwarp (but then... Mysterious Planet had some great stuff as did Ultimate Foe). I look forward very much to your video on the best Paul McGann story!

    Definitely agree apart from revelation I hate the first part. Also totally agree with you on attack of the cyber men, I loved it that everyone got what they deserved. Also are you going to do top 3 stories for all doctors (save mcgann unless you’ve listened to big finish)?

    I'd put Vengeance first also, but I gotta admit I'm a Timelash fan (Paul Darrow is in it lol) so it would have to come second. After that picking any favorite gets harder because I rather liked a lot of the sixth Doctor unlike many folks. Except for his weird intro adjusting to the role I think he was much better than Peter and Sylvester and I think he was mistreated by the BBC (Trial of a Timelord). The 2 Doctors was definitely amazing (Jacqueline Pearce is in it ha ha) but like you said a bit long. Please don't do Tom next. It will take you FOREVER to narrow it down to 3 for him.

    Totally agree about Revelation of the Daleks and Attack of the Cybermen. But I just never liked Vengence on Varos. But we agree on two out of the three. That can't be bad. If it can be counted separate from Trial of a Timelord my third choice would be Terror of the Vervoids.

    In attack of the cybermen the black cybermen were slightly underused and the regular ones the opposite,the cyber controller is balanced screen time but is slightly dumb at the Doctor but he’s dumb too,so I just roast them both,I like to roast Colin Baker a lot and peri tries to talk to him but he starts arguments even in the tardis.
