I was a huge childhood fan of Doctor Who from 2008-2015, but from Seasons 10 - 12, I only watched the show out of obligation, although I did enjoy the episodes. My passion was reignited through watching all of classic Doctor Who through the 2020 lockdowns

That's pretty much what I did. During Jodie's run I decided to watch classics and started collecting them as well. Classic Who reignited my passions by discussing the stories I never saw from classics and having second viewings of the ones I have seen.

@@Kenpachi546 I've been doing that with the Season 19 Blu-ray. I was ten and three quarters when "Four to Doomsday" was originally broadcast and thought it very boring. This last week, I found it engaging and loved some of the concepts. There aren't many modern era ones I've watched more than once.

I lost my love for Who on two occasions. Towards the end of the McCoy era, when I just gave up on what I thought was the amateurish production; but then the VHSs of the old series reignited my interest. Then recently, with the Whitakker/Chibs stuff, which I thought was badly written and aimed at much younger fans. But I've also noticed a boredom creeping in with franchises in general - the Alien movies, Bond, Star Wars... I don't bother going to see them at the cinema any more. Maybe it's getting older or maybe... just maybe... it's because they're not delivering right now. Who knows? But please keep the channel going - love it!

I'm a younger Doctor Who fan - I grew up with Christopher Eccleston and David Tenant - but I agree with you that I'm less interested in seeing these series in cinemas. I think it's a general apathy towards these old, established shows because there's just not much interesting happening right now

I started watching DW in 1971 and totally feel in love with it. The passion for it grew and grew and reached the ultimate peak during 1974 to 77. My interest started to fall in season 15, it didn't grab me as much. I kept watching it, but I didn't look forward to it like I did. Things at that time where bad at school and remained so until season 18. With this fresh new start I became more interested as the season progressed, and by the time The Keeper of Traken arrived I was really infused with it again. This went on and got better through season 19 up until season 22 and things fell apart for my interest in the program again. Kept watching it but it looked terrible. It then stayed like this until S McCoy's last two seasons where I was interested again.
Then when it came back in 2005 I was in full flight with it again until new season 11 where I just fell out of love with it.
It's always been an up and down experience for me. I am always loyal to it and support it but I think it's natural to go through what you're going through. I'm very excited for the 60th and beyond, it looks very engaging again.

Wingy mate, I think the main thing about youtube in general is that the most important thing is creating videos you enjoy making. I remember you saying it in Q&As in the past, you do RUclips cos you love doing it and you love making the videos. I think I speak for most people who watch your videos when I say that you’re genuinely just a hugely funny guy, magnetic to watch, and just because a lot of your audience subscribed initially because of Doctor Who I think most of them realise that, firstly, Doctor Who isn’t anywhere fucking near what it used to be anymore, and secondly that you’re just an all round great guy and will watch whatever you put out if you’re enjoying it cos that shows in the videos. Whatever you do, if you’re enjoying it then we are too, that’s most important

As a much older fan, I can confirm that getting older definitely changed my interest in things like Doctor Who and other franchises I had been a massive fan of in the past. I was a "super fan" and then I....just wasn't anymore. I also got fed up and lost interest. But, over time, I found joy in it again. I didn't go back to being as emotionally invested in it, but there was a new level of enjoyment because of a layer of nostalgia for those early days. I actually think it is much more fun to enjoy the show that way. There's no stress that "my show" will be ruined because "my show" is pretty much contained in the era when I was a "super fan". I can watch those episodes and feel nostalgia for the "good ole days" and enjoy the memories. Such a sweet feeling! It's a different "spark" but just as envigorating.
However, I have not picked up any new fandom and lost interest in other franchises because of the many, many times that they raised my expectations only to dash them with subpar writing, directing, acting, etc. I am not interested in being a "super fan" when franchises are just out to squeeze money out of fans and the show runners don't actually care about the content or the fans at all. No thank you for that!

I went through a period of falling out of love with Thomas when the show got so bad (which it still is). There are so many different things in Doctor Who fandom to watch or listen to. I found that the Big Finish audios as well as the Novels have re-started my interest on a few occasions. It also made me appreciate the TV program more.

This is something I've struggled with over the past couple years, I seem to go through phases of being interested in Doctor Who, rather than being constantly in a Doctor Who mood like I used to. Its bizarre because I don't think it's connected for me at least with the quality of the current show and I think it's probably due to the lack of Doctor Who being consistently on TV, or nothing to take it's place in the meantime, not even any news to discuss really (although I feel that twitter has made speculation so toxic that its not something that appeals to me anymore). With nothing Doctor Who related in the subconscious I have to actively remember to watch Doctor Who or listen to Big Finish rather than it already being on my mind. Therefore it just sinks into the background and other things take focus. Also, I don't know how it is for you but for me irl practically no one I know likes Doctor Who, and therefore again it sinks into the background, the opposite of football, which most people I know like and therefore dominates much of the conversation. Because of this it's always on my mind and is more likely to engage me than something like Doctor Who I suppose. This was different when I was more involved in the 'community' which I'm not as much now just due to time really, but about a year ago when I was chatting to Doctor Who fans about Doctor Who all the time I certainly had more of a love for it, perhaps there is a correlation there. You're certainly not alone in feeling like this though because it happens to me all the time, I don't really know how to cure it, from my experience at some point Doctor Who will just return into your routine, you might see a clip on twitter or something and decide that you want to put on a classic Who story for the first time 8n a while, and then one thing might lead to another and you may enjoy watching Doctor Who again 😄
Also in terms of making other types of content, I'd say just try and make whatever you have a creative drive to make. I'd be interested in watching the videos ideas you spoke of in the video 👍

I was OBSESSED with the show from a young age, I was born in time for the reboot in 2005 so you can imagine how many times I watched Eccleston and Tennant as a kid. I went to museums, experiences, conventions, filming locations, watched Batmanmarch and subsequently cost my parents a fortune on merchandise.
I think my interest probably peaked in 2013 with the 50th, but my interest in the show began to decline soon after. Probably part of it was growing up, with my interest changing as I grew older. I’d been a literal child and therefore wasn’t intelligent enough to spot a bad episode throughout all my childhood, I just took every episode for what it was. That was until I didn’t enjoy the Robots of Sherwood, and I actively disliked Last Christmas (understand I had never disliked anything Doctor who before. I was only like 11, I hadn’t developed a critical eye). Then I really didn’t like series 9 and after 2015 I just didn’t care at all. I forgot about the thing my life had once revolved around.
It was probably partially caused by the effects of growing up, but it was still strange since my life had been essentially based around Doctor Who from a young age. Suddenly I just forgot about it.
Then in 2017 series 10 was the first series I actually liked in a while. I started rediscovering what I’d once loved.
Since then Chibnall’s tenure as show runner has done almost nothing to perpetuate my love of the show but unlike from 2015-17 I appreciate the show and watch all the, well… the watchable episodes (sorry Jodie).
When they took a while to announce the new show runner I was convinced it would be cancelled again but now I’m excited for RTD2, hopefully it can bring back the spark I felt years ago.

Ok so I became a fan during the wilderness years (91-92). I'd watched it as a kid but a repeat of Caves ignited the fan in me, and I began buying the New Adventure novels, the DVDs and other merch. This lasted till around 2001 when I lost interest in it and I either sold or packed much of it away. Then the show came back, and I watched mainly just out of interest, and it got me hooked again. By 2007 I was collecting the Big Finish audios, tracking down the eighth Doctor novels I'd missed, and I began doing my complete marathon going from the first Doctor onwards. Interest began to wane a little around the last half of series 6. Over the next couple of years, I stopped subscribing to Big Finish, my marathon dried up while reading the eighth Doctor novels, I still enjoyed the show, but it was just there and when it wasn't I was doing other things and just dipping into the expanded stuff now and then. Series 10 & the current era have sort of ignited my interest again (I think I'd got tired of Clara at the time, Series 8 is my least favourite and that affected my enjoyment of series 9) But I still have tons of audios and novels I want to read but don't seem to find time for (and catching up with Big finish now would be a nightmare, even more so than when I did it in 2007) I haven't yet brough Galaxy 4, Evil of the daleks or the new Abominable Snowmen.
That said I've also found the same happening with many other shows I use to watch. I still have the last seasons of The Flash and Legends on my sky box waiting. (In fact, I have so much recorded on there I'm down to 2% space left). I've not watched any of the Marvel series after What If, No Way Home was the only Marvel film I went to the cinema for, and Love and Thunder is now on Disney but i haven't got around to it. I find myself more watching things on You Tube then TV. That said I do love watching doctor Who reactions. I currently subscribe to 5 or 6 on Patron and that's been an interesting way to revist and enjoy past stories.
Sometimes it's easy to burn out on something plus other things in life can come along and take up your time and interest. Most of my money and time goes on another hobby I enjoy so I have less time than I use to. Another thing to consider is weather your channel is affecting you; I use to write reviews of my marathon plus I also had a blog page and I found trying to keep up and write for those made me lose the enjoyment and make it feel more like a chore. A break is always good. Maybe that interest will come back or maybe you'll end up enjoying the show again but just on a personal level.

Not sure if this is sound advice as such but during lockdown number 1 in 2020, I just found myself watching classic stories starting with An Unearthly Child and Survival before getting into the stuff in-between before watching the RTD era in tandem with Torchwood. Next ting you know, I've written draft one of a fan fic which admittedly I'd like to go back to one day. The lockdown viewings of past episodes helped reinvigorate my passion as well all in all I reckon the spark will hit you when you least expect it :)

I’ve been having the same thing right now. I haven’t watched a story and felt like I have wanted to watch it or need to watch it again, it’s more like a yeah, I’ll watch it. The thing is, I didn’t notice it until last month. I watch doctor who related content, not episodes. I know, web planet isn’t a fan favourite, but I watched half of it then I left it there. During the summer I randomly chose two or three stories per classic doctor, and I stopped at Colin when I had Dragonfire, Greatest Show and Curse of Fenric left.

Felt the same way after season 11 and for years just basically forgot about the show existing, but then i rewatched the whole show with a friend and it brought me back. Seeing someone else's excitement over a damn good show just reignited my love for doctor who. Also having someone else ask you to put on some doctor who is a really good motivator to get through even the bad episodes.

I think I can relate a fair bit to you Wingy. I've got an absolute shit ton of Doctor Who stuff that I haven’t got round to experiencing yet (90s novels, a few dozen Big Finish audios, comics, Classic Who) because I just can't be fucked right now.
Personally, what I've found is that, to avoid Doctor Who burnout, I just stick to experiencing a much smaller pool of DoctorWho content for a while.
For the last few months, I've just been sticking to rewatching the 13th Doctor's era and editing on Tardis Wiki about the Doctor of War audio stories. I've become far more passionate for the latter series in particular as a result, as I've spent a few months noting down stuff to include on the wiki and just generally breaking down the stories and what happens in them. If I hadn't done that, and instead just listened to them once or twice and then simply moved on to the next Big Finish release that interested me, I wouldn’t really give a shit. But now, having gone through all that, I'm genuinely excited that there’s a second box set coming out this month. Like, I'm more excited for this than the 60th.
I guess that’s my advice: don’t try pursuing every single thing that comes out. Obviously, as a RUclipsr, you’ve also got your channel to think about, but honestly? I'd say if you wanna make Doctor Who videos, do it on a specific sub-section of the show that you genuinely adore. Don’t worry about all the new stuff coming out, or all the stuff that people are asking you to make videos on. Personally, I've found Doctor Who far more enjoyable when I experience it in smaller chunks, focusing on only one or two eras at a time. Maybe that can help you?

I became a massive Doctor Who fan starting around 2006. I really wanted to like Jodie Whittakers Doctor but it just never felt like Doctor Who to me, so then I got super involved in collecting the classics. The fandom here in America seems to have waned the last few years - we'll see what happens when RTD takes the reins again.
And don't let your age dictate what you like. I'm about to be 45 and will choose sci fi/ fantasy over a rom com any day.

I felt that way for a bit especially since most of the Chibnall era was not my favorite. A little less than 2 years ago I found out what Big Finish was and that got me back into Doctor Who. Honestly, it got me waaaaaay more into it than I ever was. Six and Evelyn relite my spark. It felt like getting to watch Doctor Who for the first time again. I have found so much love for Big Finish and even with that said, I have had times where I take a month off of Big Finish if I start feeling fatigued. Whenever I come back I tend to love it even more.

I'm honestly so glad that I'm not the only one who's been going through this.
I used to adore watching this show, only to grow frustrated with some of the writing (namely the 11-12 eras), followed by growing indifference over the past couple of years. It feels like I've been watching it either out of obligation or in the hopes that it would improve. I am intrigued by what the next era will bring, but not overly excited. Add the portion of the fandom who judge others for not sharing their opinions and it's just gotten exhausting.
The issue with the show, personally, is I have found it difficult to be invested with any of the characters (it feels like the writing has also gone downhill but that's another topic). In the meantime I started watching other shows that gave refreshingly engaging characters. In little time, Bones and Buffy became my new favourite shows, on the basis that I finally found characters I could care so much about.

So related to this. I'm about the same age as you and I completely lost my enthusiasm for Who and all my other nerdy passions back in uni. I think a lot of that was because I didn't have many friends who enjoyed the same things and I started to feel like maybe I was too old or it wasn't cool anymore. Eventually, I just happened to watch a rerun of a Tennant and Tate episode after years of not engaging in Who at all and it reminded me of why I loved the series. Best advice - don't force it. Eventually it does come back. It can help finding other people who still have the enthusiasm for it too to remind you why you loved it in the first place

I totally feel that. It’s hard when something is such a big part of your life to loose that passion for it, I’ve had the same thing over the past couple of years. The thing that’s really reignited my interest for the show again is the fact that yes we are getting a genuinely great writer back to lead the show again and now that the show is gonna be produced by a studio other than just the BBC. So it’s more just intrigue for the future I have at this point but I’m still hopeful for that future as well

I’d 100% recommend that you listen to the audios to rekindle your love. It’s definitely not the same and it’s definitely not as accessible but when the circumstances are right to listen to some stories then there’s no better thing. Try and continue with the 8th Doctor stuff. I know it’s rocky to start with but it genuinely turns into some of the best Who content ever. In fact I’d say I’ve never been more passionate about DW than I was with 8 and Charley - and I’ve been watching the show since I was born!

For me (with various franchises not just DW) it‘s been a combination of not really liking/caring about recent entries and finding fandom tedious and slightly aggravating.
I still like stuff like the original Halloween movies and classic Doctor Who even if I don’t really like the recent stuff but I now seem to go through phases of wanting to revisit the older stuff and just not really being interested. But I guess when I do get interested again it does tend to be fun so it’s overall better than when I was trying to stay invested in series’ that I didn’t like anymore.

Yeah I feel the same way at times myself. I did actually feel this way with Doctor Who but this happened when I was a teenager (around Capaldi’s era) and I didn’t really rush to watch S9 and S10 when they first aired on TV. Somehow, Jodie’s era was responsible for me wanting to watch the show again, so I did find some of my old Doctor Who DVDs and watching them on Netflix and they definitely made me fall in love with the show again.
Easing back into something you liked before takes time. A recent thing I’ve started liking again after not bothering with it for a few years was wrestling. Loved it growing up but lost interest as a teenager and now I’m fully enjoying it again.

Honestly mate I wouldn’t worry. Personally, I watched series 10 when it came out and absolutely loved it, was at my peak fandom and jumped straight into series 11 when it came out, but since then every new episode felt like a chore, I had to watch it out of dedication and be able to talk about it the next day. I didn’t hate it I was just indifferent. But since then I’ve rewatched so much classic and new who, just whenever I feel like it and it hits the spot and fuels my love for the show. Sometimes there’ll be months between rewatches, sometimes days, but there’s so much content to be excited about when you’re in the mood.

This is kind of like what I went through with video games. Just one day, I didn't feel like playing them anymore, and the spark didn't come back for like 5 years, and even when it did, it wasn't like it was when I was a kid. I think it's just apart of getting older and changing as a person.

I kind of relate to this quite a lot as an autistic person, because I tend to hyperfixate on my interests and only have two modes. Either I'm totally obsessed with something or I'm burned out and fatigued and then I find something else to obsess over. From my personal experience, as far getting interested in Doctor Who again, or any hobby or interest after a burnout, it needs time. You can't force yourself to do it or put too much pressure on yourself. It will just happen naturally where one day you'll be like "oh yeah Doctor Who, I need to get back into that again!"

Doctor who has been my favourite show since I can remember. I will always be a fan of it, I’m too invested into it to just move on now. Around series 7-9 I did lose interest a bit, but I came back when series 10 ended. A good thing about this show, is that even if you don’t like the current era, the next era can be way better or way worse, so it intrigues you and makes you wanna stick around.

It happens. I go off bands for years then come back to them. I had no connection with Dr Who for about 5 years till I found out the VHSs were out. Sometimes something else will take over, like it's currently The Orville for me. But that's probably more to do with I've seen everything Dr Who wise on the screen, and I'm just waiting for something new. A classic blu ray release also gets me back.

Things happen in our lives. This might be a little strange but stay with me: When I was younger, back in high school, I loved collecting and listening to the singer / songwriter Bob Dylan. I collected albums, singles, bought each album as they came out. But after a long while, I stopped, or at least eased back on the Dylan stuff and listened to more newer albums of other artists. It happens. You can overdose (so to speak) on what you love to a point where you can't deal with it anymore. What I also discovered is that it's good took have a hiatus like that. After a long time, I discovered I wanted to listen to Bob Dylan again. And it was a revelation. It was like listening to him for the first time. It was wonderful! Moral of the story - things change, things go away, things come back. Not much of a moral, I know. Basically change "Bob Dylan" to "Doctor Who" and maybe you'll see what I mean.

Bit different to you as you have a channel to keep producing content for, but my love for love for Doctor Who has always come in waves, ever since the 1980s. I have other interests too, including movies, gaming, football etc, so I like to switch between them every now and again to stop things getting stale. As for what triggers the switch back - I usually just think "I haven't seen so-and-so story in ages, I'll dig that out" which usually ends with a series of re-watches and renewed interest. As for social media, best avoiding it at all costs anyway (except youtube of course) as it's never healthy.
In terms of other stuff, I hope you do your World Cup videos again in November/December, always good to see what other England fans are making of the tournament. And yes, let us know what you make of Disney's latest output (Star Wars and Marvel I mean, not Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck) as this year's output as been interestingly divisive (by that I mean none of it has been good enough to please the masses, but has please some people).

Went through a similar situation around 2015-18, where I felt less enthusiastic about Doctor Who, what was coming out at the time and I was looking back all that positively at past eras of the show. Although there was also real world personal stuff that impacted my thoughts of Doctor Who. Dealing with that stuff gave me the head space to revaluate my thoughts of on elements that I didn't enjoy, S10 is now my favourite new Who season, Capaldi is my favourite modern Doctor. I realized my main issue with current Doctor Who is not shaking up the status quo all that much and sticking to close to formula. My biggest hope for the next era is breaking new ground and experimenting more.

For me, my love of the show is in it's DNA, and not so much in how it's ever really been handled by one person. I've not enjoyed watching this era nearly as much as ones before it, but that's not really an issue for me, as the show is always changing in terms of writers/actors etc, but the core format (doctor and companions gallivant about the universe together as their bond grows) has been forever unchanged, and that's the bit about the show that keeps me interested and coming back.
I think once the 60th rolls around I'll immediately be back glued to my seat. It's a slow period right now, so watching old stuff is basically all we've got, but in these times I do step back a little bit if I'm afraid I'm going to burn myself out.
And I've long since learned to ignore twitter when it comes to doctor who, so I only ever talk about the show with a close group of friends.

5:33 Yeah you can pretty much apply that to the Marvel and Star Wars fandoms, tbh mate I'm wracking my brain thinking about as to how much of the Marvel stuff I need to watch to fully keep up with it lmao. I've just turned 25 as well, so I guess it is maybe all part and parcel of growing up, you feel as if you have a lot more responsibilities such as (work, marriage and family) and watching these shows feels as if they're getting in the way of achieving stability in life, also taking into account how we're really only interested in things like Marvel, DC, Power Rangers, Doctor Who, Star Wars, Pokemon, DBZ and Yu-Gi-Oh because of our childhood nostalgia, as soon as we start watching it we all feel a sense of comfort but after a while it dies away as when you get older you realise all these things feel quite predictable, you know what to expect but you watch it anyway.
With regards to getting back into Doctor Who, I suppose you could rewatch some of your favourite scenes on RUclips and that might perhaps incentivise you into watching the full episode again which will then lead you into watching more of the episodes. That's what I did with the 9th-12th Doctor's scenes.

When was the last time you were hyped, with the community, for new Dr.Who? Maybe that's it.
I did manage to rescue my interest in Star Wars by rejecting the Disney movies completely. I read the EU books. Now while it's true most fans don't know who Abeloth is but I am enjoying this series of books as much as watching the original trilogy. My Luke Skywalker has an alternative story to the known cannon of most fans. And that's okay.
Likewise with Superman. I am reading the Tomasi run in the comics but once it is finished I know that the series plummets in reputation.
Choosing what I consume was the solution for myself.

For me Doctor Who was such a huge part of my life from when first watched it in 2010 with Matt Smith, mainly the modern series but there was interest in the classic. I started to feel distanced from the show roundabout Series 9/10 I still liked the show but not as much but I continued to explore the shows past watching the eras from before such as 9 and 10 but didn’t stop watching the current era of 12 but again completely focused on New series. Eventually I lost interest and believed I’d moved on for years getting rid of quite a lot of merchandise I had accumulated over the years. Despite this the announcement of the Classic Collection box sets reignited my interest and it’s once again a huge part of my life again, despite still not enjoying the new series I still watch out of obligation but still waiting for the feelings of excitement I got from the RTd and early Moffat. I think as fans of something we devote ourselves too sometimes we can have moments where we lose interest especially when the show is facing a lot of negativity from fans it makes the show hard to enjoy but I’m sure like me your interest will return Wingy as you said it’s ingrained in you. Maybe you just need a break for now and you’ll return.

I had my own kind of crisis of faith in 2016 when the show was on hiatus.
I missed basically all of Series 10 when it broadcasted and really wasn't arsed about watching until I moved house in early 2017.
Was bored waiting for my WiFi to be put in, I gave Series 10 a go and absolutely loved it - I caught up on the day World Enough and Time went out and still remember the week waiting for The Doctor Falls and that two parter instantly become one of my favourite stories.
In a funny way I think Series 10 is my lowest and highest point as a fan and while we've gone through three shite seasons since, I've been doing my classic marathon for a few years so when I got pissed off at the Series 12 finale I could say "I'll just go watch Tomb of the Cybermen."
(As a side note, Wingy what'd you think of BCS Season 6?)

My tip is to completely put doctor who out of sight and out of mind for awhile, but don’t get rid of it. After Resolution I just completely stopped caring about the show and didn’t even notice it happening, the quality was a major part of it, along with the discourse and my life generally changing and getting older. My eyes just glazed over my shelves of merch and I never heard, read, or saw anything about the show for around 10 months. Eventually I was reminded of it and was considering selling my DVDs. I stuck a Tom Baker classic on in the background, actually enjoyed it, and then realized that I still liked this series and slowly dipped back into it. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with taking a large break.
Similarly there’s nothing wrong with a quiet break from the fandom either. Yeah it’s going to prevent you from having a big following on twitter or being a notable name in the fandom or really having any attention but you have to ask yourself if thats actually a bad thing for you. For me it’s not worth chasing that if it’s going to burn me out in the long run, although if you’re running and maybe making money from a RUclips channel I can see that being a more difficult choice.

Getting older has changed nothing for me. I still like what I like at 62! But, I feel the same "meh" about a lot of things on TV or movies. Lost interest in Star Wars after the 7th which was horrible. Marvel has gone down in quality but we are also oversaturated with it as well. As to Doctor Who, well, while I've enjoyed the new series I feel it's been done more poorly than the classic. The whole overriding story arc thing is making for worse Who in my opinion. Also, the propensity to bring in more current day politics and romantic themes for the Doctor are ruining the show. I actually like Jodi as the Doctor but her shows have been at best so-so. In the classic era the Doctor popped in, solved a particular adventure and left for the next. Very RARELY did one episode mean anything for the next few. I think they are trying to make the new series too adult themed. They need to dial that back. I want to see the 60th, see the new Doctor but like you, I've lost some interest.

  • @aldothewarrior

Hi Wingy. I have to agree in many respects, especially with New Who. While I think all actors to play the Doctor are fantastic in the role, it's always been the writing that's let it down and to be fair I find we are in what many Classic Who viewers during the 80s would have felt - there absolutely has been a decline in quality of late due to the writing.
On the subject of Evil of the Daleks, I sat down last night and watched it for the first time and for the first time in ages, I was actually really excited to watch the next episode. I wish the new series would write more stories as they did in the classic era - you are spot in in saying the show runners want to throw too much at the wall and it's just a mess over the course of single episodes. The 60s and 70s often got this right in my opinion and Evil of the Daleks (while not as good as Power) is a great example. The Daleks are scary in this one! Completely in control of everyone (including the Doctor) and I don't think the classic era would ever get another pure Dalek story this good again (since Genesis onwards was mostly about Davros)

Really interesting comments section. I keep seeing the words "chore" and "obligated". Sometimes forcing yourself to experience something that just isn't what it once was can sour your perception of said thing as a whole. Once that's been let go, one can maybe rediscover what they enjoyed so much in the first place. I got older and accepted no one could revoke my fan badge for not caring to see the latest episode.

I've been there loads of times, my friend. Through the Moffat era and the Chibnall era. It clearly isn't what it used to be anymore, since series 6 it's all gone down a downward spiral and the fandom being so divided really isn't helping matters either. Part of it might be due to getting older and unpicking flaws and plot holes in certain stories or it might be due to outgrowing what you loved as a kid over the years. While I am curious about this new run under RTD and Bad Wolf productions, at the moment my fandom has wavered, plus a lot of real life stuff gets in the way like finances and finding a job.

  • @peter7711

I get where your coming from. For me it’s been Star Wars and marvel. Just finding it such an effort to watch any of it, as it’s just not what it used to be. I think I want to do other things, like travelling or just doing something practical like learning a language. Just something to feel like it’s a better use of my time than watch something and feel that could have been better used. A lot of modern doctor who can be anger inducing for me, if I allow myself to care too much, and tbh i would rather not. And since doing that I feel better. Like Star Wars was my absolute favourite thing ever, but I realised if I started caring to the point of being so angry at all of disneys irritable (to me) changes/decisions it’s just toxic. And I just blew it off.
Actually same with gaming, pretty much sold all my consoles recently bar one, and just gave up gaming. Just felt like I wanted to just not play so much maybe 1/2 in the next year, but not spend so much time spent either playing the same stuff over and over or getting angry at stuff that ultimately doesn’t matter, in life.
It does feel better and I feel happier and more free because of it.
So maybe a break from doctor who is good, and just talking about what you actually like talking about at whenever you want, will do you good.
Sorry for the ramble as well, just have verbal diarrhoea apparently (lovely picture there 😂)

Wingy, I'd pick classic stories to watch you truly love (Hand of Fear, Earthshock, Genesis..., etc), or beloved stuff from Nu-Who, to keep the flame alive. No matter the massive harm done to the show in recent years (toxic fans, thin characters, woeful story telling, a very poorly written Doctor, terrible ret-conning), that doesn't wipe out for me when the show was the best thing on TV and the joy the stories I love give me. You know what it's like... Being a Doctor who fan is like following a football team. Sometimes they play like complete donkeys, sometimes they play like gods. If you can, concentrate on the wins. I would say that distancing yourself is a good idea I've not properly rewatched doctor who in over a year but I feel as though once chibnall is over I will have a real reason to become more invested. The dry marketing and lack of almost belief that doctor who warrants marketing has made the fandom hateful and the enthusiastic people who have doctor who accounts quit their accounts and I believe its all down to the issue that we are no longer being communicated to. The fan base got so excited when announcements were made so its still there but the lack of advertising means that all we know of the centenary is that it has reoccurring villains and old companions but that alone won't generate excitement as people have seen the way that chibnall has butchered characters like the sea devil's and the master before so there is no excitement

I'm an ancient Doctor Who fan, and suspect it's not an age thing, so much as the 'relevance' of Doctor Who in the current media climate. Old Who fell out of favour when other series moved Science Fiction forward (from Star Trek to Buffy). New Who worked because it took on those changes and told Who stories that felt fresh alongside its peers... now it's also looking dated, in format and what it's saying. Meanwhile, series like Expanse or Stranger Things bring exciting ways of telling stories, and Who needs to learn from those, rather than just assuming that applying todays agenda to yesterday's format will make people interested.

Same here. I'm patiently awaiting to see if RTD van bring back some of the old magic but if I'm honest, I think maybe the show has just run its course? It's part of the furniture now much like EastEnders off Corrie that are just on the idiot box for the sake of it. No creativity, too much history. For me, the show has gone on far too long. Perhaps f they took the odd break here and there then things may have been different but there's only so many stories they can tell and even in a run of just 12 episodes, they couldn't help but stuff a season full of filler episodes that are quickly forgotten. If you look at DWM, they are basically rewriting articles from 20 -30 years ago desperately trying to find new angles on well worn-out production facts. The 80's was a great time to be a fan when al this production detail was new and interesting. Many will disagree with me but that's where I'm at.. Time for something new - a fresh idea, a new sci-fi series the can rival the success the Beeb had with Blake's 7 all those decades ago.

    Hello Wingy.
    I grew up with the
Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker in the 1970s. At this same time I was watching shows including 'Thunderbirds', 'Star Trek' and 'Space:1999' and 'Blakes 7'.
Dr Who has never been my favourite show but I did watch it to the bitter end (aka hiatus) in the 1980s.
It seemed to lose something towards the end of the Tom Baker era and it was never the same again - too much/outer space stuff - and never again attained the level of inventiveness, charm or success that we had seen was possible.
I found a lot of the Colin Baker and Sylvestor McCoy series borderline unwatchable.
That said, I have watched most of what is referred to as 'new who'. But sptopped watching after 2 or 3 episodes of the Jodie Whittaker episodes. I watched the Christmas 'Sea Devils special' and I can honestly say it was nothing short of embarrassing. How a corporation the size of the BBC could make and broadcast - at prime time - this piece of junk astonishes me. It felt like a student film... and I don't mean a young Steven Speilberg or George Lucas student... The writing directing, acting, vfx, editing... everything. Just awful.
The show was really declining fast during the Peter Capaldi era (I had such high hopes for him and feel bad for this squandered opportunity).
I imagine it must be very hard to be a 'Dr Who fan' with just so much content in terms of JUST the TV series. Different lead actors and different styles over 6 decades. I can o my imagine it must be overwhelming. And for the past few years it has been a load of crap!
For me, I love the original 'Star Trek' and 'Star Trek The Next Generation' series.
I started to feel overly saturated with the advent of 'Star Trek - Deep Space 9' and 'Voyager' and the less said about 'Enterprise' the better. And don't get me started on the dreck that is/was 'Picard'. The crap incarnations of 'Star Trek' somewhat taint my view of the original.series and Next Generation.. and I sort of resent the new shows for this (and for being crap in themselves). I imagine this feeling could be similar for someone following 'Dr Who' but increased by a factor of 10.... as it is 'the same show'.
So what to do about your existential crisis?
I think honestly, take a break from watching 'Dr Who'. You are probably over saturated with it so give yourself a chance to miss it.
Maybe seek out some films or TV with similar ingredients to 'Dr Who'.
    * I recommend all three of the Quatermass films. 'Quatermass and the Pit' us one of the best sci-fi films ever made (IMHO).
    * Have you seen 'Blakes 7' I thoroughly recommended.
    * The Twilight Zone is always a good watch ... even if sometimes only for the performances or other film-making expertise. And I find it very inspiring. Such imagination. Rod Serling!
    * The Peter Cushing Dalek/Dr Who movies.... in fact ANYTHING with Peter Cushing!!
I hope you find something useful in this 'comment'.
    Just some suggestions

I started loving Doctor Who in the late 90’s. I then as time went on I became kinda bored with it if you will. I watched some stories (mostly the Tom Baker ones) so many times that I was getting bored. I started watching New Who when it first aired, but then got bored with it during the Matt Smith era. When the Blu Ray sets started to come out I started to watch Classic Who again and my passion for Classic Who came back.
So bottom line is for me, taking time off really helped me.
Don’t overthink it. Take some time off.

1:53 Yeah definitely man, it's a show that we've both watched- CW The Flash. From 2016-2019, I was pretty much an ardent fan of the Flash, like I watched all the seasons religiously and I even bought merchandise from the show such as posters, hoodie, mugs and t-shirts, however my interest into the Flash only happened because of Arrow and as both shows were interconnected especially in their earlier seasons I felt like I needed to watch both fully at the time. Then once Crisis on Infinite Earths happened, Flash became the only show that I kept up with fully to still be going on, I can admit the show started going downhill from S3 but it was still watchable, with of course some occasional flashes of brilliance (if you pardon the pun) but it wasn't consistent. Then by 2020, I felt the show had no sense of direction after COIE, the villain wasn't interesting, plus Barry hardly featured in many of the episodes, many of the storylines felt predictable in 2nd half of S6. Once I found out that Hartley Sawyer was fired from the show I pretty much gave up on it, I was initially hesitant to watch it again after S6, but with Hartley gone it pretty much validated my conviction. I just found the whole thing to be ironic, since the show's all about redemption/second chances yet they didn't apply it in the real world.
After finding out how bad S7 turned out to be in the end, I was relieved that I didn't have to watch it a lot of people called it the worst season by far and I could tell that just by the clips on RUclips alone lmao. That being said I did go back to watch S8 for Armaggedon, due to all the hype surrounding, I mean it was decent but nowhere near the quality of the earlier seasons. But after seeing how much had changed, I didn't bother watching it with the same amount of enthusiasm as I did before, I just continued watching the clips to get a general idea of the story. After hearing the news about Flash approaching its final season next year, I might give it another go again but it all depends on the trailers and which characters will feature.

I'm very much there. I don't even care when anything comes out or even the audios. Total burnout. Terrible fan base that constant insults other people for having different opinions along with legit horrible writing. I don't know if it will come back . I think the show needs to go away for a long time personally
Thankfully this DOES give me time to find new things to watch that I have never seen. I want to watch Babylon 5 and the orignal Quantum Leap. Never seen any. Never seen much of Star Gate SG1. New things to possibly fall in love wth.

B5 is brilliant.it has production issues (lack of cash) but it is almost endearing in a doctor who kind of way.the writing in B5 is brilliant and a self contained story is just a joy

Blake’s 7 is well worth a watch and could if done correctly be worth a reboot. I’d rather the BBC remake that or Quatermass than see Doctor Who plod along with the same old ideas.

Wentthrough the same thing with Star Wars. Stopped with ep 9. Then clone wars season 7 came out and the Mandalorian. With the other TV shows coming out next year, I'm excited for star wars again.

I usually just wait. Gave up on Who after Series 12 got back into with Revolution due to needing a distraction in life.
