That's so cool Phil - congratulations ! Not sure if anyone mentioned to you but if your guitar is coming from someplace that has much different current climate / weather than where you live it's a good idea to let it gently acclimate for a day or so before trying to play it... this is particularly important for acoustic guitars because the wood of the body / neck can really be influenced by changes in temp / humidity etc. It can be hard to wait that extra time but it will make your guitar happier !

      So cool, Phil, congratulations!
(One little tip: my first guitar had a high action (i.e. distance between the fretboard and the strings), which unnecessarily made playing more difficult. The action can be lowered easily, there are tutorials on RUclips or take it to a guitar shop/luthier.)
Best wishes and fun for your journey!

@@kevinford6372 Unfortunately things have been going very slow. I've been dealing with pancreatic cancer since October with the ensuing chemo treatments and then followed up by major surgery a few weeks ago. Once I recover from the surgery I'll then have to go again through more chemo therapy which really knocks the hell out of you. I have a Taylor 214ce Plus guitar which is beautiful and the action seems to be very good. I keep it out on a stand in my living room along with a chair, music stand and a print out that I made of Luaren's lesson course. Seems as though I've been on the same page for over a month learning the C, D, G and Em chords As it goes now I do numerous 5 to 10 minute practice sessions during the course of the day so progress has obviously been a tad slow, but I'm persisting as best I can given my circumstance. Other than that thank you for asking how I'm progressing and it's great to hear that you're still at it and thoroughly enjoying your guitar journey. ☺

Any1 watching this thinking about picking up and learning guitar, just do it, you won't regret it. I started 2 and 1/2 years ago and loving it. There are very affordable and decent guitars and amps to learn on. You can even buy used. And alot of info available on the internet to learn. Of course Lauren Bateman is one of my go to teachers. So in short, start this journey

I am so thankful to have found your page. I’m 53 and have always wanted to learn how to play the guitar. Fear of not being very good and be laughed at held me back. Hopefully starting April 2024 the current chapter in my life will close with me being a warrior after a cancer diagnosis, surgery and months of chemo and radiation. I got my guitar a few weeks ago for my birthday and it came with a couple of group lessons. These lessons made my greatest fears that prevented me from trying seem mild. I’ve been following along albeit slowly with you and while I’m not breaking records I can play C and Em, it’s a process, and your kind delivery is so encouraging as you meet people like me where they are. I don’t want to play for anyone and my goals are really just to not regret never trying and I would like to just enjoy the journey. Thank you for your what you do. After my second paid for lesson I felt so defeated and was ready to sell the guitar. I still own it and more importantly I am utilising what you are sharing every day. Again thank you.

Hi Lauren. I got back into playing in Jan of 2022. I took 30 years off and I sure regret it now but surprisingly things are coming back faster than I thought considering my age 64 and now retired. I have 3 Ovation acoustics and one Gibson Les Paul. I don't sing, never played in a band and have never been on stage to play. So for me, it's just a hobby a self accomplishment issue. I enjoy it. You're the only instructor I have seen on You Tube that teaches things nice and slow from the start. I have yet to see anyone else. If I was to teach I would be just like you and making sure that people learn things correctly from the beginning. When I self taught myself in 1979 I held the pick wrong with 2 fingers and the thumb and never arched my wrist under the fret board. I have gone back to re-learn some songs that I learned from a teacher back in their 1980's. Black Bird is great and really not that hard to play. As you know you can look up one song on You Tube and you'll find 10 different ways to play it from 10 different teachers. I have seen most of your videos and watched some of them today. Your finger exercises are great and I still practice two that I learned from years ago. I quickly found last year that the better the teacher the faster they teach. They don't go over things thoroughly. They teach at their professional speed which is no good for beginners. So you'll wear out the batteries in your remote rewinding. Classical Gas is a real hand full to learn. I can't thank you enough for your teaching methods. I found you on You Tube by just clicking around. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. I love the one with putting four fingers on the G string and moving them one at a time. The ring finger as you mentioned is tough. Practice makes perfect. Thanks so much for all you do. Rick

I am so much more confident when picking up my guitar. Even when I go back to spider exercises, my fingers still fly around. But, I notice the dexterity improvement and I don't have to *stare* at the strings ahead of time.
Next step: Close my eyes like YOU and *feel* the chord changes. 🎸

My first battle was switching between open D and open Em. No pivot. Then it was stretching just to play open C and open G. I started the pivots wherever I could, made several chord changes not battles. Open chords took me about 4 years to switch between all of them without missing a beat. By then barre chords, Bm and F, were more comfortable. I had to start the barre chords up the neck because I couldn't stretch that far yet. Cant solo like a pro, but it's too much fun to stop. At about 24 years in, I have 3 guitars, a bass, 2 Amps, 4 pedals. Next is an acoustic amp.

I saw Leo Kotke in concert in the mid 70's. He broke a string and told us a story as he was putting the new string on. He said his friend and mentor John Fahey was at event Leo was playing at came back stage after leo played and the first thing he said was 'cut your fingernails your notes were buzzing' . That lesson has stuck with me for 50 years now. Long finger nails will prevent you from pressing the string to the fret properly.

Lauren, I have a comment about the timing you were talking about. Instead of doing four strums, what I found helpful in the beginning was strumming once and using the rest of the count to build the next chord. I have a metronome app on my phone so I can speed up slowly. Just a thought.

I watch mainly 3 (Utube) acoustic teachers. I love your tutorials u make it so easy to learn. I've been (playing) for over a year now and have a bad habit of just learning a few bars from songs I like but my main problem is switching between chords without stopping any tips to help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Danny, yep, that's a problem for many students. In my course, I really focus on chord changes. There are tons of videos to play along with me. M
y biggest recommendation is to take two chords at a time and practice going back and forth back and forth over and over again. It takes a lot of repetition.

Hi Lauren! It's Ruth whose guitar instructor is Brian May. I fractured my upper left arm a month ago so I'm unable to play my guitar now. Hopefully my arm heals fast. It's hard for me to see my guitar sitting there. Brian May did something awesome for me. He knew I took piano when I was a little girl and I regret to this day quiting. Brian texted me 3 days ago and said there is a free Keyboard for me at Studio Arts. I was so touched. I can still play music right hand only but I'm having fun.

Looking to begin taking acoustic lessons (at 65), but trying to understand whether I should be learning chords/strumming or fingerpicking styles.

I would start with chords and strumming first. Add fingerpicking once you get some more control and dexterity. Fingerpicking doesn’t sound very good when your chords are muted. That’s exactly what I show people in my course.

Hi Lauren Bateman. I've been watching your videos for the last month. I also seen one of your live shows couple weeks ago. I'm Michael from Kentucky. I always wanted to play. And watching you has made it so simple. I've started with this video. And I'm catching on pretty quick. I know you talked about the fat fingers. I'm using the tip of my fingers and I got the calluses going there. But do they have some kind of little straps that will go around the top of your fingers because when I do push down on the strings it makes my fingers push out and barely barely touching the other string always getting this little blah. I have skinny fingers. But when I push down on the string it makes that puff out. Now if I don't push down on the string hard enough I I get the blah. Love the way you teach. One video at a time

    • @LaurenBateman
      @LaurenBateman  Год назад +1

One video at a time. That will sort itself out with more experience. Right now, your fingers will mush a lot. But you will figure what works best for you and your finger shape.

That’s how whoever created the diagrams made it. The high notes are on the top. The low notes are on the bottom.

Quick question: If chords are named based on the first note played, why is the 2-finger "C" chord a "C" and not an "E" ? Just wondering. Great lesson. Thanks!

The two fingered c chord would be w C/E chord. It's an inversion.

Hello..I am based I'm India and have just subscribed your channel as I liked the first lesson very much. However I have gew queries if you can please answer them:
    1. Are these lessons same for playing electric guitar?
    2. Is it compulsory to use a pick for playing electric guitar.
    3. I have small hands so the lessons that you have uploaded will that help me in the learning process.
    4. I am about to buy my first electric guitar as the Yamaha Pacifica 112V. Do you think that's a good guitar to buy.

Another great advice video! I have tried over and over and over on the d chord but my dang long big fingers just won't fit correctly on the E and B strings. So, I'm barring or playing the 2 strings with one finger in the 3rd fret and the d chord with just 2 fingers. I've found the sound is very similar at least until I figure out how to fit my fingers correctly.

Hi, I'm a 61 yr old veteran. I have been wanting to learn guitar for a long time. I finally was able to get one. My problem is I have a hard time staying focused on things. I'm struggling with the fret and string diagram, because it's up and down, instead of the way I'm holding my guitar. Do you have diagrams that show's it the way I'm holding it?? It's confusing for me. I do love the way you teach. I've been working on a Horse with no name.
