Marek PASIECZNY and Michal STANIKOWSKI (guitars) | SAKURA NO HANA Variations for two guitars by Marek Pasieczny | dedicated to Britta Schmitt and Carles Guisado Moreno | DUO JONCOL
    -------------------------------------------------------------
"Sakura No Hana Variations" is a fantasy piece based on a famous Japanese theme. The way of combining Japanese tradition with new sounds and metric, the transfer of the Koto sound on two guitars and the creative ideas to different guitar techniques makes this work just inimitable. Marek Pasieczny is such a talented composer and we wish him to continue to be so innovative, original and creative.

    --------------------------------------------------------------
'Sakura-Sakura' ('Cherry-blossoms-cherry blossoms') is a traditional Japanese-folk-song that depicts the season of cherry-blossoms during spring. Contrary to popular belief, the song did not originate in ancient times: it was a popular, urban melody of the Edo Period, defined as time from beginning of the seventeenth century to the middle of the nineteenth. The song was later adopted for use by beginner students learning the-Koto (a traditional string instrument), and was published in the Tokyo Academy of Music Collection of Japanese-Koto Music at the end of the nineteenth century. This set of variations is based on this melody.
"Sakura No Hana" Variations is based entirely on five notes (A, B, C, E, and F) forming a pentatonic scale that is commonly used in traditional-Japanese musics. In contemporary Japanese-music, a sixth note (D) is occasional employed to act as a dominant seventh. My attempt here from the very beginning of the compositional process was not to create a guitar piece, but a composition for two Japanese Koto instruments to later be adapted for two guitars. In using extended techniques on the classical guitar, I tried to imitate as closely as possible the Japanese Koto. Each variation is therefore highly significant in its structure, form and timbre nuances.

I don't know if anyone else has asked, but what are the balls at the end of Marek's strings (behind the bridge)? Seems like a new way to string guitars.

      At least Marek's got balls,...
Well these "balls" are used for tying the knot behind the block so that the string is not being pulled upwards by the top loop of the conventitional attatchment method. This creates a bit more pressure on the sadle bone resulting in a slightly more focussed and tight tone. Some hear, use it, others don't. I prefer it on the bass strings only.
