I’ve been testing both of these cameras for my channel,even though the Insta360 can do so many cool things the one thing it still suffers, is skin tones and focus. The Action 4 image quality is just better to my eye. Also there are times when in direct sunlight that the Insta360 Pro make your face look like you’ve been on a raft for six months, waiting to be rescued. 😮
I can totally understand. In my interview with insta360 teams they told me there is a new huge firmware coming that will solve these issues
Ok that may change my opinion then hope it happens soon before I return it. Ha

However, I see you mention there's another firmware update due for the Ace Pro, I was wondering if they specifically mentioned wherever the focus issues are being addressed in particular? Focus issue cannot be adressed fully in firmware update. Do you notice focus issues here?
The focus is actually about 60 - 70 cm, no doubt about it. And I've got to say, the more and more reviews I watch with side to side comparisons, when the specifics are compared and given as well as you provide like distance, sharpness, settings, etc, The Action 4 REALLY shines! Thank you sir, I've been on the wall for a month over these two cameras to add to my 2024 action cam for the year, and you just sold me on the DJI. The Ace pro has a huge problem that people are really taking into consideration. It's called an action camera, but it's missing the 1/4 screw mount and you can't replace the lens. And if you do break it, sure you have 1 year to get it, at the cost of SHIPPING AND DOWNTIME! It also focuses too far away for basic vlogging, it's more of a family/vacation cam with that flip screen and hook mount and distance focus. They tried to combine too many things into one cam, it's also pretty heavy for an action cam. I'd like the ace for night recording and vacations, not for an action cam.

Both cameras are really good, I think the processing on insta360 is slightly better. But I do prefer DJI Action 4 personally!

First off all, it is an action camera and one with a fixed focus lens, not a portrait camera so all this talk about close focusing is nonsense. This is *not* a criticism of your video, and I’m glad you made it.
Given that it’s an action camera it is acceptable in focus at 40 cm and even 30 cm. As you said nobody is going to be blogging at 30 cm distance to the camera so whether the camera focusses at that distance or not is irrelevant.
If people want to focus on objects less than 40 cm then there are close-up lenses that they can put on the front of the Ace Pro and achieve that result. Or they should just get rid of the action camera and get a real camera like an SLR with a macro lens and do proper photography. Action is not close up videography unless you are making videos of bugs.

On your mic, you need a fluffy "dead cat” mic cover. They beat the wind the best, while still sounding good.

I have the GoPro 12 and it’s similar. About 16 inches or further looks best. It’s not a close up camera. I’m interested in the Ace pro for low light but in good light, the GoPro looks great. They are different uses.

For me the most in focus one is 70cm the rest is slightly out of focus to very out of focus. I think the focusing distance is 60cm. Personally I like vlogging at around 30cm as I don't have super long arms and I find the focusing distance to be an issue, at least for me.

Silly to do all this work, but only test the extreme settings Highest and Low. It looks best on medium. Low is mushy and blurry. Do it again.

Great review, both are great cameras and both have their strengths. IMO, the Ace Pro has better exposure throughout your review and I just keep seeing better skies with the Ace Pro, but that's just personal preference. as for the close focus, they are pretty close but as you said, no one vlogs that close unlike some of the 'others' lol. I've had mine for almost a month now and to be honest, I really don't have a lot of complaints, everyone uses it different and I use mine a lot in low light and night so this was the perfect choice, DJI was a close contender but Ace Pro was hands down better when it got darker.

Compare to the OA4 in 8:39, Insta Acepro is totally out of focus, the minimal focus distance of Ace should be 60 or 70 cm or more.

I've concluded the same. It's going to need a diopter.
So, watching on a phone and a 4k laptop is quite the difference.
Definitely not in focus at 30mm. The amount of bokeh at 40mm seems to slightly blend in. At 70cm it’s fairly similar though.
You can definitely see more of the Infinity aspect at further lengths. Not nearly as bad as the back focusing from Dji a few years ago.
That being said the sharpness seems to be a little high. Nothing they can’t fix w firmware. Although I’m curious how much the firmware can adjust the lens if at all. There should always be a way to calibrate lenses in all cameras to adjust for this.
They put a floppy back screen on this which means vlogging. Therefore the lens should focus a bit closer than 40cm in my opinion.
Love to get my hands on one for my auto drift events to see how it looks. :)

At 40cm it still looked a bit blurry with at 30cm it was pretty blurry, at 50cm it looked a lot better and at 70cm it looked great but i think 60cm was the best in focus range.
I my self am having issues here and there with my Ace pro being a bit off focus and my type of content is riding electric scooters and my buying point in the Ace pro was the preview remote which for me is very important. I do have to record in 4k60fps but even with stability set to high i still see a bit of shakey video footage over the gopro hero 10 i have which has image stability set to Boost which is above High. I still think the ace pro is a wonderful camera and im definitely going to keep it but i do wish they would do some firmware updates that can increase the stability and focus range. At 40cm it looks a little blurred, am I right in saying that the action 4 is 30cm, and I believe the 2nd revision of the action 3 is also now 30cm. Oh, and a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you too :) from Staffordshire, UK.

thanks for the confirmation, so that means that the action 3 must have been released with 50-60+cm and on the second revision they've pulled it back to 40cm. I'm yet to invest in any decent action camera and I'm juggling between the action 3 and 4, or should I just be patient and wait for the action 5? What do you reckon, is the action 3 likely to come down further, it's currently £339 here in the UK.@@photorabz
Thx for the comment. Action 4 is way better than 3. I don't think we will have much of improvements on action 5. They cant put 1inch sensor otherwise they won't sell pocket 3 anymore

This is really helpful. These two action cameras side by side like this. The action 4 seems to be better at everything. There are situations where the Ace Pro has better exposure, from what I have seen in other videos. It is easy to raise the shadows in post on the Action 4 to get similar lighting results.
I know what I will be going for. Also don't forget that the onboard microphones of the Action 4 are also really good.

Merry Christmas! 🎄 I will let those concerned about close-up vlogging comment on rather the focus is a deal breaker or not. For my use cases, this is not a big issue for me. However, there are some enthusiasts that have come up with 3D printing solutions to build adapters to hold macro close-up lenses for this camera. Hopefully, 3rd party vendors are not too far behind with solutions.

I was so surprised too. The audio from the internal mic of pocket3/action4/acepro was totally unusable

I have a question about the Free Frame mode on the Ace Pro. It seems its only 4:3 aspect ratio which the Action 4 does too. Is it actually different or are they just giving it a fancy name?
It is the same sensor so same size and dimensions...free frame is just a way that allows you to visualize and frame your shot properly using the grids and it is really helpful kz many times with the action 4 u think u nailed the frame in 4:3 to have a vertical ans horizontal clips but then you end up with not so good clips. Free frame is like a guideline no more no less

If you have the ace pro audio adapter you can use any mic that has 3.5mm cable.. i am preparing a vid about all the solution possible soon (after the holidays)

Thx alot..i don't have the dji mic 1 anymore...but you can connect the dji mic 1 receiver via audio 3.5 cable to a camera so i am sure if you have the audio adapter of the acepro that will work just fine
Interesting that at medium sharpness setting, the Ace Pro looks almost out of focus whereas the Action 4 is nice and sharp. And at highest sharpness setting, it's kind of switched between the two with Ace Pro crisp and sharp. Personally, I prefer the highest sharpness setting on the Ace Pro.

Well one has 8 bit colour (256 RGB) and the other has 10bit colour (1024 RGB). That fact alone makes the DJI the winner.

Some rumors spread of focus issue of Insta 360 Ace Pro. But indeed in this price Insta 360 as a action cameras doing much better.
If anyone really want excellent focus then there are more expensive cameras, expensive lenses and buy separate gimbal to use for stabilization then that require bigger setup and more.
Instead other option is DJI pocket 3 that taken too much time to develop but that is also not perfect, not waterproof, front face background blur is not ideal for beautiful place, cropped field of view.
Any company wont make a perfect camera for some reasons.

Hi. Why ? This is not an interesting test as for action cams focus distance is set to infinity.. but the depth of field starts from 40cm to infinity

Sharpness and focus is much better on the OA4,
look at the details in your face and your hairline in a still image, the hedge in background seems to be sharper than your face on the AcePro 🤨
