When "keeping it light" these bodies start to look so "toy like" rather than scale or like a full size truck. And realism is the whole reason I got into rc crawlers.
I try for a ballance between performance/scale. And when I say scale I mean looks not necessarily replica of the exact truck. Example I'm fine having a Toyota with portals.
Great video! I prefer heavier bodies (Usually hard bodies) cause I love the scale look of crawling more than the competitive side of the hobby. My crawlers are very capable, not as much as some comp crawlers of course, but I have noticed with some of my rear heavy bodies in particular, it can sometimes make the rear tires grip better and assist some climbs. Not always, but sometimes. I like fighting out what the most realistic climb for each rig is, instead of trying to make EVERY climb.
It does matter... What also matters is not to overweight the car with brass and aluminum as there is so much a soft tire can do to get traction. You learn this the hard way with time.
@@theskeptik1 Yep.. I was in the full aluminum/brass axle bandwaggon and man... Once you start to dig in into weight balance and CG you understand what the hell you did wrong the first time... I am using full aluminum axle in the front with brass, Plastic axle and aluminum portals in the rear, Zero aluminum on top of the axles and its awesome, Never going back to full metal.
great video brother! For me, i try to build all my trucks with a hardbody, love the scale looks and much prefer a heavy truck for the exact reasons you described. i've never liked comp's all that much as i don't like to be rushed or timed, i'd much rather have a nice relaxing scale drive with a super scale truck and try to pick lines as "real" as possible, having a truck that walks all over everything takes the fun and challenge out of the drive for me. Although i do have a few performance based trucks and enjoy them, it's a heavy hardbodied truck all day for me, lights, super scale interior, driver, steering wheel mod, opening doors..... oh jesus i'm starting to drool so i'm gonna go for now mang;) LOL
What i like about this hobby is the fact that you can build super scale trucks that looks awsome (but drives poor) all the way to the wild lightweight comp trucks and all trucks inbetween.
You gave a great summary, right at the beginning! Heavy Bodies (not on the Roof), make the Rig look and feel more Scale. Ultra Light Bodies, with the weight centered under the Axles, is great for competition, where the ability to climb at scary angles is preferred... It's really about what do YOU want in a Rig!! 😉 Carmine ✈🚂🚙
I have watched so many of your videos and they are all great!!! I am impressed by your reaction time though!!! When they start to fall over you change direction and keep the wheels planted a majority of the time!!! My skills are far from that 😂😂 Thanks for the great vids and keep up the good work!!!
The body for the rig I’m currently building is over two pounds. Hardbody with a full interior. That light flexan body with all that brass, that truck should murder gates.
A stock SCX lll cant go this lines. Its way to top heavy .Maybe without interieur and rollcage. My thoughts dont brass up to much ,better take the stock weight as low as possibel.
Another great video ! I always say that body needs to be lighter and possibly not too tall, because in front steps it causes serious performance issues ! On the other side a beautiful body like this or TRX 4... gives a touch or realism that is part of this wonderful RC scale world ! Balance may be possible as you showed with your upgrades and we do the same. But having two different lines of Crawler one for pure performance and the other for much look and realism may be the best way of having fun !
I did a video last year with my Gen 8 crawling on a rock hill. While there I did the same hill without the body and called it Naked Rock Crawling. I noticed that without the body it climbed that hill easier than when the body was on it.
Sure the lack of the body helped with the performance, but I find that testing without the bodies or running open wheel designs can tend to be easier and misleading because you can see what all the wheels are doing. Wheel placement was a bit different than when you ran without the body, don't think you could see it.
its super tough to replicate the exact lines on these crawlers, testing foams changes everything in much the same way, I can start the same but its always a bit different at the end.
Hey hope u and ur family are well. Love all ur vids, was wondering did u change shock oil and what weight oil do u recommend for nearly a 9lb rig and do u use soft or medium or foam thanks
Amazing video to watch, at under 10 pounds 1 pound makes a huge difference in so many aspects of the truck. Yes the cg was obviously raised but you gain traction in several areas just due to weight with the body. Shocks and tires will act differently with that kind of weight difference as well. Some people said this was a "simple" video in the comments, this is the math and logic behind crawling it may sound simple on paper but its not so simple in application out on actual rocks. Keep doing you, your videos are some of the best on YT!
lol, yeah man a heavy chassis drives so much more scale than a super light weight truck does. Its why I haven't done much with the Gen8, it drives way more scale than the comp trucks do
I agree. Whatever "mods" you do there's give and take, bottom line it comes down to drivers style and what you are wanting out of your rig. If it's a comp rig the build and setup is going to be a lot different than a scale trail truck imo
Weird to say but I feel like in some spots the body sprung weight helped a little bit. But hell what do I know.. I've based my Enduro build off the super lite. Really like how my truck performs now with the sliders and extra stuff . Can we get another comparison video of the super lite and something that's heavy ? Love that truck tbh
@@ExocagedRC does the rock sliders on the super lite help get over rocks? what do i think? Impressive! Impressive car, impressive course! Nice vid! And be honest, with the body it looked way cooler. You can say, keep the body light, but you can also say keep the car level! or keep the course easy. In the end i liked the body runs better and more impressive.
yes, I get everything setup the night before with links, thumbnail and all that for the next day and schedule for early. Sometimes I don't have that option and I am up getting things ready at 4am, no kidding.
