    Back in the 50's my father built his own camping/hunting addition out of plywood on the bed of his old Chevy PU Truck. He took that rig everywhere until October of '74, then he started getting sick and passed away in May of '75. It had all the comforts you'd want. He was born on a farm in Pennsylvania in 1897, survived WWI. He was very handy in all types of projects. I enjoy seeing what folks come up with. You all stay safe and love to you from Baltimore.

      I was just thinking the same thing! So many of these builds become so overly complicated. There is value in keeping things simple...less to go wrong, less to replace, easier to replace. I just watched a beautiful build, it was gorgeous, but you need an electrician's degree just to maintain it. That (for me) defeats the object of the thing which is to be mobile and independent. There is space in this lovely little build to add some bits like a fridge or a tiny toilet, a small stove, etc. And so simple. I love it. 😊

    Looks nice and comfortable. Respectfully, a couple of suggestions. Improve the chain on the S-hook for securing from the inside. Fire extinguishers, I would suggest two minimum for a vehicle that size running electronics or for any emergency. Given the times we live in I would suggest some trauma pieces to your first aid care. Get tourniquets, blood clotting products, some small tampons for holes (do your research on that one) needle to relieve a collapsed lung, etc.
    Have limo/blacked out tint for your camper windows. You can get someone to apply it, they’ll do it without writing you a receipt. I’ve sported limo tent on all of my vehicles because of my former uniformed profession. It’s smart. Road flares?
    Exterior lighting for security, emergencies, etc.
    Where’s a handgun, AR, or at least a quality shotgun and ammunition. Bear spray is good to have but it will not save your life. Some things, in my opinion, to consider. It’s yours and your family’s lives at stake once you leave the castle. Take a midland radio and a $20 ham radio and/or a radio with emergency channels.
    Remember, you may be in that vehicle when something bad may happen and no one’s coming to help.
    Think in those terms and you’ll make the proper additions.

    I've got an inverter inside my truck, with protected wiring going to the inside of the bed of the truck, and installed a regular 120v outlet inside the corner, and maybe someday I may install a switchover to hook up to shore power. You have to be careful what you hook into the outlet because it is not a true sine wave inverter. Love your setup, real fancy.

      Bob is right that some devices do not like inverters because of the imperfect waveform, but that's not what you have installed. Thats a simple "regulator" or "power supply" converting AC to DC. An inverter would take DC in (from the battery) and give you AC out (typically 120V here in US). I was particularly impressed with your clean, safe, and frankly impressive wiring job.

    It's super sweet. But I highly recommend doing it with a sprinter van rather than an f150. There's just a tremendous amount of room. We're talking enough for a tiny sink, stand up room, actual storage room, tiny desk and even a upward work space. This would be low key awesome for the weekend but beyond that, you realistically would prefer more space on the road. But this is totally awesome. Not knocking.

    Drill a couple small holes in the bottom of the topper door/window, one on each end. Place some "U" shaped metal brackets in them and then get yourself a length of metal, ideally iron, and just lay it in the the "U" brackets so that it extends all the way across making it impossible to open the topper door/window from outside. Simple, strong and alot more reliable then what you've done. Just a suggestion. Nice job though, looks comfortable.

    BTW if you get an RGB light or just a red light, you can make that 3rd switch a night light (meaning no blue lighting to mess with sleep algoritms and red light gives you enough to see by when you wake up in the middle of the night instead of blinding yourself with the others).

    A workaround for not being able to lock these from the inside is to get the next model up in Leers lineup-the 100XR. That cap has a different door that has a center mounted handle with slam latches to shut it, that door can be locked before its shut and then will stay locked. It is able to be opened from inside with a handle. Also it can be fitted with an actuator to allow it to lock/unlock with the trucks keyfob for extra convenience. I work at a cap lot installing these and its a very popular model for this use.

    My dad built something similar in the 70's for a road trip with 5 kids from Iowa to Washington state. It was on a Dogde Power Ram with a club cab (w/jump seats). He even built in the pre-cursor to the Yeti cooler (some high density foam made water tight with what was basically duct tape). We would climb back and forth between the jump seats and the back of the pickup, taking turns sitting up front and napping in the back! It was great, and I'm pretty sure none of us got carbon monoxide poisoning. :)

  • @TheFlyingHeart
    @TheFlyingHeart 3 месяца назад +1

    If you are considering doing this, one thing different I would recommend; is put the bed in the other side. It should be on the RIGHT as you face the back of the truck.
    The reason is, if you are parked on a street, every car that goes past will be passing with two feet of you sleeping. It shakes the vehicle and you hear and feel every one of them. One of my big fears, was being hit by a car, as I was parked on the street. You would not believe how many drunks and crazy drivers go by each night. I wanted a CRASH BUFFER between me and any car hitting me, so I always slept on the passenger side of the car.
    Also make the bed wider and a little away from the side. That so you have a little room to put insulating blankets or something between you and the cold metal. Sleeping is the hardest part of this. Make your bed as comfortable as possible. Storage is easy to come by. Comfortable sleeping is not.
