Very helpful video. I was told I needed a new engine, I needed a new ECU and I would never get this car fixed. I followed this post and exactly this was my problem. Hopefully it doesn't move back out of alignment like others commented but my codes are gone and car running great now. Thanks for people like you who take the time to record.
While watching your video my 2018 GMC Terrain was in for vacuum pump replacement. The mechanics just discovered the damage to the engine. Now the $400 repair bill has gone up to $5000 for major engine repair.
Make sure you check both cams because I just had chunks of pump gear knock the other cam reluctor out of time. Best off replacing the cam and doing it the right way. My timing gears were also off a tooth.
@@B-RY556 I fixed mine the vac pump shattered and I took my valve cover off clean out the broken peice and turn the crank at 12 where the picture was then tap the reluctor wheel
Hey!! I have the same engine in a 2018 Equinox. Had same issue with vaccum pump and then was crank, no start.. I have changed the pump and aligned reluctor wheel to match QR code... Car since then starts and runs but has "Reduced Engine Power" warning and also Dispays Check engine light.. Scan brings up P0017... Any tips on what I should be looking at next? I am in New Zealand and there is no dealer anymore as Holden/GM have shut down operations here.
I have seen that every time this issue happens it happens differently on every vehicle. Remove the valve cover again and check the reluctor wheel for the proper alignment. I know its a pain having to do that again. If the reluctor wheel is out of position again, you will have to replace the exhaust camshaft. If this is the case, in my professional opinion, do the timing service while you replace the exhaust camshaft. If the reluctor wheel is still aligned correctly, check the timing chain/belt for the correct timing points. In other words, make sure that the timing chain/belt didn't skip a tooth on the exhaust or intake camshaft sprocket. If it did, try to fix the timing without having to remove the timing cover. If you have to remove the timing cover, then might as well do the timing service on it if you have to remove a lot of things to get there. BUT, if the engine is timed correctly and the reluctor wheel is not the problem then... I don't know. At the end of the day, do whatever you can to fix it and sell it as soon as possible, or get rid of it. It's just going to bring more and more problems in the long run. Get yourself a Honda or Toyota and forget about these ridiculous issues with cheap small Buick, Chevy, Cadillac, and GMC engines.
Forgot to mention, to check the timing without removing the timing cover, put the piston in cylinder one at top-dead-center and check the timing points on the chain and/or camshaft sprockets. If something is off or out of place... you know what to do.
Replace the cam do not try to re-align it, once the reluctor spins at all it needs to be replaced because it is pressure fitted, it will never be lined up like it should be, as to why your car is stuck in reduced power
I was biting my lips when you started hammering on it, you take a gamble on breaking it..what I did was sacrifice a foreign made socket and welded tabs on the out side o socket to match the reluctor wheel and used a breaker bar
No need to bite your lips, I believe you took the longest route to do the same thing I did. Most mechanics just tap into place like I did with a small hammer. Also, just the though of trying to fix the reluctor wheel IS a gamble, because it could come out of place right when you turn on the car, and you would then have to replace the exhaust camshaft. I believe the correct way to fix this issue is to replace the exhaust camshaft the moment you see the reluctor wheel out of place and I believe the dealership would go this route to avoid being responsible of an imcomplete repair. I took a huge gamble doing this because the owner was going to sell the car right I gave it back to them.
This was the fix in my case and the car was sold, now the customer is running with a different car. But if your reluctor wheel rotated again or it gives you the aame cade once again, it means you need a new exhaust camshaft.
@@MechengrMIKE2200 Thanks for the info, but I can tell you that the car never surged at idle like you say it would, I drove it for a little over 100 miles before returning it to the customer, never surged at stop lights or while in park. It just drove like it was new.
@@franksgarage7880 if you look at a “good” exhaust camshaft, the reluctor wheel is NOT directly inline with the laser etched code/part number. It is clocked slightly to the left of center. This makes a huge difference in the signal the computer is getting.

if you put a tiny tack weld but it shouldnt if the vacuum pump doesnt make it go

in order to replace the camshaft do you need a special timing tool ? if so what tool is it that i need I can't seem to find a video on it.
I think I have the same problem.. I heard a tick then breaks got crazy hard and now it’s not starting with a p0017 code
Me too

Does tapping work? We tried and codes still coming up after also fixing break vacume pump.
@@angileneforrest1156 I tapped the wheel and it turned . It’s a press on
Did the issue ever come back after taping in place or did you have to replace the camshaft

Como saber donde queda el reductor tienes un punto de referencia

Did it rotate again and throw the same code? Or was this fix the fix for your issue? Still to this date?

but wont it just spin again ?
Should have done a bit more research before just replacing the vacuum pump. Now I have to do it twice 😢
It will start just takes time bcuz the engine is thinking its out if time .. i just out mune bck together
