I just actually ran across this about a week ago for the first time. Knocked me for a loop, definitely! When the original came out it freaked me out because the darkness of the lyrics did not in any way match the fun, poppy cadence of the music. It's fitting Vessel and Co covered it. They breathed the darkness back into the dark.
Nailed it - being as ancient as I am I fondly remember the original OutKast version despite being a dirty “mosher” long before that came along. Vessel’s cover if anything gave me a deeper respect and appreciation for the song as it’s actually really sad. In a complete constrast to the sound of the original and the visual presentation of the video. Lovely bit of art. Masterfully covered. 👌
I love how Vessel saw this song for everything OutKast wanted it to be. In an interview Andre 3000 said that their fans didn’t want to hear what the song was about. They wanted to dance. It’s a very sad song about modern relationships. Vessel nailed the delivery here. Vessel is still dining on old encounters with Eden. They both probably didn’t have a great hold on how to process their traumas. Because there is a dissonance in the two people being talked about here. They are prone to hurting each other. Even though they think they love each other, but Vessel and Eden both feel lost in the shuffle. We know that when people go into relationships to find their own completeness it will more than likely end unfavourably. And without growth there is no hope to find your happiness in someone else. This is Vessel’s issue here. In Eden and Sleep he is trying to find a way to love himself. And that’s backwards. He expects the love to follow, the wholeness to follow and when it doesn’t he can’t cope. There is no happy ending in this story with Eden. They know they are in denial. But they hang on for whatever reason they can think of. It’s better than feeling alone, right? Vessel is showing the most vulnerable side of him so far. He is processing grief. But Sleep is about to put all of that noise to bed real quick. Congratulations! We are going to Sundowning! Love the channel!
