I decided 3 days ago, I will fulfill my dream to work on a cruise, and the same day I found your channel and had a massive marathon since. I can not be enough thankful for the videos. Joining a cruise is very scary and your videos are like the light in the end of the tunnel! Thank you very very much!! (I am really into Virgin Voyages hopefully they will accept my application 🤞🤞)

Love this interview. I sailed as a BR (bedroom steward) cabin class on both the SS Independence and Constitution in the sixties. What a learning experience. In those days, I worked 20 rooms alone and lived in a foc'sle with three other men all from the steward's departments. There were very few women on board and those that were, shall we say, had a hard life. So glad times have changed for the better. Oh, and as an occasional Seabourn traveler these days, the cabin attendants on those ships are amazing. I still keep in touch with a few. Our favorite was a Dutch girl named Jannigje Verhoek. I'm wondering if Anne-Marie ever sailed with her. Fair winds and following seas, ladies.

As someone that has been a cleaner on land (not exactly the same as housekeeping) I can tell you for certain that it's a very hard job. It's very physically demanding as you are allocated such a large space to do in such a short period of time. I have so much respect for this lady and anyone else who has worked or currently works in jobs that require keeping areas. X

I really appreciate this series and knowing that Virgin seems to treat the crew well. In my two experiences on board, it really shows. I've never cruised another line, so I can't directly compare, but you can just tell when someone feels valued at their job. So grateful to the crew for the hard work they put in to make other folks have a special vacation.

Excellent video! Great information for anyone looking to work on a cruise ship. I guess the good news for difficult passengers is that you only have to put up with them for a short time. I just don't understand why people want to be mean or nasty when they are on vacation. The employees are wonderful on every cruise that we've been on. Why would I be a jerk? Anyway we appreciate all you do. Thank you!

That was an incredible insight into aspects of cruise staff lives, as are other vlogs in this series. How people work, what motivates them and mundane (but vital) issues like conditions and pay are very interesting. I am so pleased that Virgin pay a decent wage to their staff. It is inspiring me to try a Virgin voyage one day although I have some reservations about whether it would suit us. Our favourite lines so far are Scenic, Regent and Viking Expedition cruising but you never know. Keep up the good work.

lucy...Stumbled across your channel and love it. Been binge watching. Question for Ann Marie. As a passenger what can I do to make your job easier? I always keep our room tidy (same when at a hotel) but is there anything else? Regarding tips...I haven't cruised Virgin yet, and I always leave a nice tip for our room steward/host. Are there any other goodies that you could suggest giving (in addition to a tip of course)? Would it be insulting to ask them if I could get them something in port (a special treat/candy etc.)?

Excellent interview. The interviewee is being Very Diplomatic!!! PERSONALLY, I think you SHOULD tip your service staff IN CASH if you can possibly afford it. (Even a paltry 10/20 Euro per week isn't going to bankrupt anybody who's already on a cruise!!!) Not only does this show appreciation, but it ALSO might make service staff go JUST A LITTLE BIT FURTHER in accommodating you if you have a specific or even unusual request. (Not that they wouldn't anyway, of course, but they'll be KEENER to do that if they know their co-operation is valued and regarded.) If EVERY GUEST/SAILOR/CABIN did this then this VERY hard-working young woman gets a few extra shillings (???) to supplement their pay-cheque each week. Again, this will encourage the staff to be more engaging with you and POSSIBLY encourage them to share a few 'hints and tips' that might enhance your experience. Also, experienced staff (like this young woman) develop Very Quickly a kind of 'Sixth Sense' in exactly the manner in which they might engage an individual guest/group/couple. Some people appreciate a bit of friendly chat, others not quite as much... EITHER WAY, a CASH GRATUITY lets workers know that their efforts are not being overlooked or taken for granted, whatever way the individual might choose to relate with them. (Incidentally, I'm NOT a service worker but I was once and nowadays I ALWAYS TIP service-staff. That's NOT ABOUT expecting better/preferential service, it's just the right thing to do!) xx SF
