I was in SAJC when it was at Malam Road. One morning during assembly, our principal told us to study hard, and the teachers were there to help. One day our JC can even surpassed RJC or on par. When students laughed, the Principal asked why were we looking down on our own abilities before even trying. That mindset will not improve the whole JC. Now looking back it is true. Back then NYJC cut-off was 16. Look at where it is now.

Malan road .. every morning when running late for school , we will pool cab with fellow SAJCians at harbour front MRT to hopefully make it to school in time . Last time there is no Vivo city , harbour front is just a small mall . NYJC cut off point for year of 2004 O level student was 14 pts for science . Now , the cut off pts halved since then 😁😉

Honestly Mary's point in 10.11 is quite different for most people I've talked to. Although u get to drop the subjects u're bad at in secondary school, in JC, u realise that u're bad at the subjects u "thought" u were good at.
Man this video helped me a lot in a sense that I feel better not being the best student coz I felt I could relate to them. My o lvls are ending very soon and yea what they said was right. I should just let this phase pass and once results come out, plan and follow the pathway that’s designed for myself, not the future that I wanted, but the future careers that I can have
I graduated last year from ASR. I did horribly (67.5rp) because JC really drained the life out of me and i could never stay consistent and disciplined with my revision or just even schoolwork.I will be retaking it next year with a different subject combi!! I hope i will do much better really. JC is a painful experience. Never in my life had i felt so dejected and useless for being such a burden on my family and having to take an additional year to get into the course i want.
Yoo! Don't think negatively like that! Honestly, it's just about the time. Even if it's just an additional year, it does not mean you won't succeed! Just be proud that you've already did your very best to even enter in JC. I'm sure you're going to well next year, all the best!!!
I graduated in 2015 from PJC with a low 80, was hoping for above 85 so i was pretty disappointed with myself, but the most important thing is learning to like what is being taught or else it'll just be a painful experience and nothing would go in. I didn't manage to go the uni course i wanted and neither did i retake A levels. Graduated from uni in a related course to the course i wanted and didnt do very well - due to lack of interest and goal So the score doesnt matter, its what u do at the end that does
get IB & IP students next? tbh this series quite eye-opening to me, Went to an IP school, no relatives in SG + small social circle & everyone I know went to local uni (nus/nus/smu and maybe like a handful in sutd/sim) or abroad; I had no clue there's so many different academic paths out there until much later when I start working/interning and volunteered as student mentor for some sec school kids. Its interesting when I hear people ask "why did you go jc, why did you go uni", like that was never the option for me; it was just the norm and no one ever told me there were alternatives..
So goddamn relatable.... j1 student here in a average jc... Ive never burnt out so many times in a year b4...pw feels really unfair and taxing... and my best subject in the past, math, is not my worst... i used to love math so much but this year altho i liked learning it i could never perform in major tests... i will continue trying hard but its really dissapointing that my fav and best subject throughout the past, despite studying more now, im doing worse.... i no longer aim high for exams, im just going to try my best and hope to improve next year in y2. But all that being said there are some nice things this year. For example, orientation, studying with friends, complaining abt the rigour and acting like monkeys as a class during celebrations.
As a grad from JC (2013), I remember in those days I flung my examinations like nobody business but I did quite well for A level in the end, AAA/CDA. The only comfort is that when I compare my percentile in school examinations and compare it with the 'A' levels percentile breakdown in the school yearbook, I know I am pretty safe. Hence I no longer look at my marks in the exam but only at my percentile in my level. I think which JC you go to matters, like for me, I was from Anderson JC (Now Anderson Sengaroon JC) and my sister (1 year younger) was from HCJC (she was from O levels), from her experience I can sense that neighbourhood JC students are more willing to help each other, while the 'elite' JC treat each other as a potential competitor. After that in NUS, I realized that when people around you come from all the different schools, where you come from does not matter as in the end as everyone is here together. Also, perfect scores also don't really matter unless you are aiming for courses with perfect rank points cutoff, as you just need to score enough to get in.
I think ppl say all jcs are good , but the reality is that diff hv have diff quality of teachers in each dept. my friend from Yijc said that their PW A rate is like 30% (can’t rmb exactly but was less than 50) even the damn hardworking n lazy groups got B. Other jcs with better COP had like A rates of 50-60% so to a small extent the jc u go to matters, no hate jus stating a viewpoint/fact
I was from Innova JC (from before the merger into YIJC) - but can confirm that A rates were very low (around 30%). My PW teacher (sadly) wasn’t very good so that definitely played a part in our grades.
All the best Mary, for the 2017 batch of YJ students (the second last batch), we had 3 girls who organised a debate for the whole school and really wanted to get into law and all 3 got into either NUS or SMU. For my class (225 in 2018, our form teacher was Mr Christopher Loke), literally all of us made it to either NUS, NTU or SMU except one individual. Totally possible to do well, you just got to put in the effort! 😊
Straight Us for prelims. Failed Math for every single test and exam in my JC. First time I passed all subjects was at A-Levels. Now graduated with a good honours from University, so whatever.
I think every sch, JC and poly , has it's strengths and weaknesses. Don't be blinded and think that poly is all fun and games , they have tedious assignments, group work and a GPA to maintain as well as attachments they have to do well in. ( So ya just an alternate perspective that many may not have taken note of)

nahhh thats not true? i was a A2-B3 student at O levels, percentile wise im around 70-80% in my cohort in JC1? It depends on how interested you are in your current subjects and syllabus

Yes u are right, because what matters most in SG now is your vaccination status, u are only looked on favorably if u are FULLY VACCINATED and if u are willing to keep your vaccination up to date whenever u are required to take a booster shot in the future, everything else dosent matter, not even grades.
I went through both JC and Poly route. Previously from YJC (before merger) and graduated YJC with RP of 58.75. Even turned down an offer from NTU. Now in poly with GPA 3.9/4.0. Back in secondary school, I had a passion for engineering. All my friends and teachers knew I was planning to go to poly. But after O's, my parents wanted me to follow my sis's JC path cos u know "fastest way to uni" or "2 years very fast one". I was hoping to enter Mechanical Eng in uni. I am strong in engineering related subjects (phy, math), but I also had to study subjects like Chem, Econs, GP which I absolutely hate. Received a DDD/S for PCME combi. I was in NS when I received my results. It was embarrasing cos everyone in my bunk did well (commandos got a lot of smart ppl). YJC offered me to retake, but i knew im so done with A's, so I turned them down. Throughout the 2 years, I took my time to think about what I wanted. Surprisingly, I received an interview offer from NTU MSE. But I rejected them, considering that I am only interested in Mech and Aero engineering. After NS, I decided to chase my dream course back in sec school. Now currently a Year 2 student in Aeronautical Eng in SP, with cumulative GPA 3.90 with a few Distinctions. The amazing thing is that, I didnt even put in much effort, cos I really enjoy what I'm studying. To the point where I often study extra content that is out of syllabus, just because of my strong interest. I used to dodge or cant answer questions from teachers back in JC (I even broke down in class). But in poly, I ask more questions (constructive ones btw) than my entire class combined. Dont follow the social norm, if you have an interest, go and pursue it. What is supposed to be a 2 year path to uni, is taking me 5 years. Till today, i did not regret my decision
Y4 here. The number might be slightly higher for my batch of ~260 - I personally know about 3-4 who came from poly, and I already have a small circle of friends. It's possible, y'all can do it! 💪🏻
Dunman High School was one of the worst experiences in my life. If you’re looking into JCs/IP secondary schools steer clear from DHS. I can only name about five staff members who I can confidently say were helpful and genuinely good teachers/people after going through three year worth of teachers. The facilities are poorly maintained and run down for the most part and the social scene is a mess. Academic standards are extremely unrealistic, coming from personal experience and some friends/classmates experiences, while doing general Olvl/Alvl practice papers we were able to score generally okay but when it came to school mid/end of year papers entire year groups were failing drastically. This unrealistic standard is extremely demoralising, paired with the lack of help and occasional downpour of scolding/discouragement from teachers it’s near impossible to make improvements or do well there. Mental health has proved time and time again to be insignificant to the school. Majority of the staff are ill informed and unhelpful, the principal once gave a whole assembly speech essentially gaslighting and diminishing the mental struggles of students. If that’s not good enough for you or you yourself don’t “believe” in mental health I can recall my friends PHYSICAL health being dismissed on multiple occasions. I was forced to leave after three years cutting my JC life short because my mental health was constantly deteriorating and has hit absolute rock bottom, putting my life at risk, if I could go back in time I would absolutely NEVER have chosen DHS to begin with.
Also forgot to elaborate on the hot mess that is the social scene, again incompetent staff can be partially blamed for this, bullying is handled horribly. Whether it’s online or irl social isolation or just straight up verbal abuse it’s completely ignored by teachers and when brought up directly it’s very quick to be dismissed. Racism/homophobia/sexism you name it, DHS probably has it. Classmates have yelled racial slurs across the classroom making it impossible to have not heard it yet I have witnessed teachers completely not reacting or intervening. Unfortunately homophobia is deep rooted in Singapore as a whole so although Im not justifying their actions Im realistically saying that it’s possible all JCs/SG schools in general will have homophobic teachers/students just thought it was worth the mention that I’ve heard general homophobic statements thrown around by staff.
Also, teachers have argued before that it’s not that they are unhelpful/unwilling to help students but students have to “take the initiative” to arrange consultations. First of all consultations usually result in extra work, I understand practice makes perfect etc but given the usual amount of work given by a school day it’s sometimes simply not possible to put extra time into doing additional work. More importantly, teachers are wholly unapproachable. Besides the maybe 5% of teachers, as mentioned in my original comment, most remaining teachers are one of two things. One, they are extremely disrespectful and rude to students, I understand there’s a social pecking order and we have to have a certain level of respect for people who have seniority age wise and career wise but it’s literally come down to basic human respect. I’m not expecting teachers to be our best friends or anything but I’ve had teachers call myself/my class/specific friends or classmates “stupid”, “useless”, and other colourful insults that are just unnecessary. There’s a line between being strict and just being a bully and several teachers at this school have successfully crossed over to the bullying side of things. Another possible reason a teacher may be unapproachable is because they fail to teach in regular class time in the first place. If a teacher is not even doing the basics of their job during given lesson time why on earth would I waste my time going to them outside of lessons when I have so many other things to do. One could argue that maybe they’re more helpful in one-on-one sessions, first of all that’s not my problem, if that’s the case go be a tutor elsewhere don’t waste everyone’s time being a teacher and giving me the extra workload of having to teach the entire syllabus to myself. I can also recall a teacher who was exactly like this causing the entire class, excluding those who’d been going for external tutoring, to fail the subject. The teacher insisted that one-on-one consultations would help but from what I’ve heard from multiple classmates the teacher was just as unhelpful and failed to answer any questions, instead responding with more questions which is completely unhelpful.

Take it from a recent law grad here - law isn’t the promised land of success it once was. Competition is extremely stiff and the wages do not really commensurate with the effort you have to put in as a junior lawyer. If you decide to pick law, be clear if it’s what you really want - the “prestige” alone, if there’s any to even begin with isn’t enough to keep you going through the endless late nights you have to put in.

Hari Vish went to ntu after poly. Work in the discipline of my major. Switch to aviation, completely different from my study. It’s has been 20years and still good. So go discover yourself

this elitist-inferiority complex that exists amongst JCs (or even Singaporean universities) based on rankings is just so sad. there isn't much of this sort of comparison amongst polytechnics. and tbh the JC system in Singapore is harder than the UK GCE A levels, and you're made to feel lousier than you actually are because of the sheer rigour that Singaporean JCs demand of students. Don't feel too bad for yourself because of your JC ranking, cause Singapore education is tough and the fact that you qualified for JC, which is reserved for a certain cut-off point/top 20-30% of your O level cohort, is already a big deal. (coming from someone who went through both JC and poly)
Im going sec 3 next year but i feel like i can somehow relate to some of the points made in the vid about grades fluctuating and all that. I am like in the top class but i just keep comparing myself to my classmates because of expectations uk. Like when everyone was studying for eoy i didnt even know where to start. I guess i have to change my mindset of just memorising but actually understanding the context or else i will be struggling after sec school.But i just feel so unmotivated and im not ready to see my grades dropping even further next year. I probs will choose poly in case i cant handle the stress in jc but is there like some way to be motivated to study or cope with the frustration/struggles when you are studying?
Agreed. For the past 2 years in my secondary school life, it’s all about studying 1 month before End of Year exams. I scored badly for Science even though I was the highest. I’m gonna be a sec 4 next year and I am unsure of how am I gonna cope w studies especially due to the fact that there’s still Sec 4 textbooks to cover :/

@@Hithere-io8og there’s people who’ve retook their Os and made it to the JC they want or poly.. if one really feels that he/she would excel in a jc/poly and willing to work harder.. I don’t see why retaking Os isn’t an option. Yes it would be harder but it’s not impossible to do well
2-3 years, if you don't take A Maths or Pure Science subjects is going to make your pre-U life seriously challenging. My view is you don't take any pure subjects in Os, avoid Pre-U at all cost. You will flunk 100%. In fact, all Pre-U students, mostly, flunk badly in their first year. Sure, there are exceptions, but typically, your first Pre-U year is seriously bad usually. And your first Uni year, post NS, is bad. It just is. And Pre-U culture is completely different - if you don't not have cohorts from your SS joining you, then you will never truly make many friends. 2-3 years, you will never really find time for anything else - like literally catching up all the way if you stumble in Y1 (inevitable unless you've thoroughly aced your pure subjects).
The IB schools are technically considered as junior colleges, just that they offer IB instead of A levels. If u want the exact differences between the 2 systems google is your best friend, though in summary IB is more of a long term thing where a lot more things contribute to your final score (sort of like a combination of A levels and poly) while A levels is just one shot at the end. Subjects and syllabus are obviously different. IB is usually considered easier to go overseas and I’ve heard from somewhere that it’s apparently easier (???) to get into a good local course too. As for environment they are probably similar since it’s all a bunch of 17-19 singaporean teenagers, though I think ACS(I) have more foreigners (maybe)
No IB is easier than JC. That is facts, hate me all you want. SG A level you are competing with fellow singaporeans, IB you are competing with international students. It’s so much easier to get max 45 for IB than 90rp for A lvls. ACSI knew it couldn’t compete with RI/HCI, hence they switched to IB. IB students are generally not as smart as their counterparts, but soft skills wise they are better from my observations.

Awesome video! You guys just reminded me of my JC life. Yes, I got to admit that it was a struggle for me personally. But nevertheless, I have made it. I need to give special thanks to those who have tutor me along the way.
And yes, some of the issues that you guys have mentioned were real for me back then as well. Like PW grouping, and those sorts of logistical issue.
To sum up JC: Even if ure a straight As student from O lvls, be prepared to score lower than 20/100 CONSISTENTLY in JC1

Im glad that they've taught us working hard for grades is important, but its fine in the end if you don't do well for A levels and that A levels aren't the end-all be all
Because its NONE of their business even if u didnt do well for your A levels, its YOUR problem that u didnt do well. The teaches of course have to say the politically correct thing, they only care about their KPI and their promotion which have NOGHING to do with your A level results.
Yes u are right, because what matters most in SG now is your vaccination status, u are only looked on favorably if u are FULLY VACCINATED and if u are willing to keep your vaccination up to date whenever u are required to take a booster shot in the future, everything else dosent matter, not even grades.

I went through both JC and Poly route. Previously from YJC (before merger) and graduated YJC with RP of 58.75. Even turned down an offer from NTU. Now in poly with GPA 3.9/4.0.
Back in secondary school, I had a passion for engineering. All my friends and teachers knew I was planning to go to poly. But after O's, my parents wanted me to follow my sis's JC path cos u know "fastest way to uni" or "2 years very fast one". I was hoping to enter Mechanical Eng in uni. I am strong in engineering related subjects (phy, math), but I also had to study subjects like Chem, Econs, GP which I absolutely hate. Received a DDD/S for PCME combi.
I was in NS when I received my results. It was embarrasing cos everyone in my bunk did well (commandos got a lot of smart ppl). YJC offered me to retake, but i knew im so done with A's, so I turned them down. Throughout the 2 years, I took my time to think about what I wanted. Surprisingly, I received an interview offer from NTU MSE. But I rejected them, considering that I am only interested in Mech and Aero engineering.
After NS, I decided to chase my dream course back in sec school. Now currently a Year 2 student in Aeronautical Eng in SP, with cumulative GPA 3.90 with a few Distinctions. The amazing thing is that, I didnt even put in much effort, cos I really enjoy what I'm studying. To the point where I often study extra content that is out of syllabus, just because of my strong interest. I used to dodge or cant answer questions from teachers back in JC (I even broke down in class). But in poly, I ask more questions (constructive ones btw) than my entire class combined.
Dont follow the social norm, if you have an interest, go and pursue it. What is supposed to be a 2 year path to uni, is taking me 5 years. Till today, i did not regret my decision

As a teacher, you are supposed to instill confidence in your students to motivate them to do better but it was not the case for me
Nus law student here. Anecdotally, there were about 5-6 students from poly in my year of about 230 students. Not too sure about the other unis.
Y4 here. The number might be slightly higher for my batch of ~260 - I personally know about 3-4 who came from poly, and I already have a small circle of friends. It's possible, y'all can do it! 💪🏻
Grad from 2019 here, I think there were around 7-8 in my batch. Definitely possible!

Dunman High School was one of the worst experiences in my life. If you’re looking into JCs/IP secondary schools steer clear from DHS. I can only name about five staff members who I can confidently say were helpful and genuinely good teachers/people after going through three year worth of teachers. The facilities are poorly maintained and run down for the most part and the social scene is a mess. Academic standards are extremely unrealistic, coming from personal experience and some friends/classmates experiences, while doing general Olvl/Alvl practice papers we were able to score generally okay but when it came to school mid/end of year papers entire year groups were failing drastically. This unrealistic standard is extremely demoralising, paired with the lack of help and occasional downpour of scolding/discouragement from teachers it’s near impossible to make improvements or do well there. Mental health has proved time and time again to be insignificant to the school. Majority of the staff are ill informed and unhelpful, the principal once gave a whole assembly speech essentially gaslighting and diminishing the mental struggles of students. If that’s not good enough for you or you yourself don’t “believe” in mental health I can recall my friends PHYSICAL health being dismissed on multiple occasions. I was forced to leave after three years cutting my JC life short because my mental health was constantly deteriorating and has hit absolute rock bottom, putting my life at risk, if I could go back in time I would absolutely NEVER have chosen DHS to begin with.
Also forgot to elaborate on the hot mess that is the social scene, again incompetent staff can be partially blamed for this, bullying is handled horribly. Whether it’s online or irl social isolation or just straight up verbal abuse it’s completely ignored by teachers and when brought up directly it’s very quick to be dismissed. Racism/homophobia/sexism you name it, DHS probably has it. Classmates have yelled racial slurs across the classroom making it impossible to have not heard it yet I have witnessed teachers completely not reacting or intervening. Unfortunately homophobia is deep rooted in Singapore as a whole so although Im not justifying their actions Im realistically saying that it’s possible all JCs/SG schools in general will have homophobic teachers/students just thought it was worth the mention that I’ve heard general homophobic statements thrown around by staff.
Also, teachers have argued before that it’s not that they are unhelpful/unwilling to help students but students have to “take the initiative” to arrange consultations. First of all consultations usually result in extra work, I understand practice makes perfect etc but given the usual amount of work given by a school day it’s sometimes simply not possible to put extra time into doing additional work. More importantly, teachers are wholly unapproachable. Besides the maybe 5% of teachers, as mentioned in my original comment, most remaining teachers are one of two things. One, they are extremely disrespectful and rude to students, I understand there’s a social pecking order and we have to have a certain level of respect for people who have seniority age wise and career wise but it’s literally come down to basic human respect. I’m not expecting teachers to be our best friends or anything but I’ve had teachers call myself/my class/specific friends or classmates “stupid”, “useless”, and other colourful insults that are just unnecessary. There’s a line between being strict and just being a bully and several teachers at this school have successfully crossed over to the bullying side of things. Another possible reason a teacher may be unapproachable is because they fail to teach in regular class time in the first place. If a teacher is not even doing the basics of their job during given lesson time why on earth would I waste my time going to them outside of lessons when I have so many other things to do. One could argue that maybe they’re more helpful in one-on-one sessions, first of all that’s not my problem, if that’s the case go be a tutor elsewhere don’t waste everyone’s time being a teacher and giving me the extra workload of having to teach the entire syllabus to myself. I can also recall a teacher who was exactly like this causing the entire class, excluding those who’d been going for external tutoring, to fail the subject. The teacher insisted that one-on-one consultations would help but from what I’ve heard from multiple classmates the teacher was just as unhelpful and failed to answer any questions, instead responding with more questions which is completely unhelpful.

I’m pretty sure is probably 1 in like 10,000 LOL cos only TP offers LAW which then he probably score GPA of 4 and probably have like law intern during their holidays

Take it from a recent law grad here - law isn’t the promised land of success it once was. Competition is extremely stiff and the wages do not really commensurate with the effort you have to put in as a junior lawyer. If you decide to pick law, be clear if it’s what you really want - the “prestige” alone, if there’s any to even begin with isn’t enough to keep you going through the endless late nights you have to put in.

So what i feel is since u say ur not so studious u might not wanna choose JC ah coz it is very hectic esp 2nd yr from what my JC friends told me.
And if u choose poly...choose wisely pls dont anyhow go choose course. Think of 3 things when u choose course :
1) Job scope
2) ur O's points
3) Interest
The same thing goes to Uni also ah so i too learnt from my lesson. I still have about 1.5 years ( with internship ) to graduate but I alr have a few courses in mind.

Hari Vish went to ntu after poly. Work in the discipline of my major. Switch to aviation, completely different from my study. It’s has been 20years and still good. So go discover yourself

I mean like i just needed some confidence. But the teachers in cjc kept telling me i was lazing around not doing well eg. In chemistry practicals. So what was i supposed to do if i was believed to be unfit for jc even if i was doing well?

this elitist-inferiority complex that exists amongst JCs (or even Singaporean universities) based on rankings is just so sad. there isn't much of this sort of comparison amongst polytechnics. and tbh the JC system in Singapore is harder than the UK GCE A levels, and you're made to feel lousier than you actually are because of the sheer rigour that Singaporean JCs demand of students. Don't feel too bad for yourself because of your JC ranking, cause Singapore education is tough and the fact that you qualified for JC, which is reserved for a certain cut-off point/top 20-30% of your O level cohort, is already a big deal. (coming from someone who went through both JC and poly)

Im going sec 3 next year but i feel like i can somehow relate to some of the points made in the vid about grades fluctuating and all that. I am like in the top class but i just keep comparing myself to my classmates because of expectations uk. Like when everyone was studying for eoy i didnt even know where to start. I guess i have to change my mindset of just memorising but actually understanding the context or else i will be struggling after sec school.But i just feel so unmotivated and im not ready to see my grades dropping even further next year. I probs will choose poly in case i cant handle the stress in jc but is there like some way to be motivated to study or cope with the frustration/struggles when you are studying?
Agreed. For the past 2 years in my secondary school life, it’s all about studying 1 month before End of Year exams. I scored badly for Science even though I was the highest. I’m gonna be a sec 4 next year and I am unsure of how am I gonna cope w studies especially due to the fact that there’s still Sec 4 textbooks to cover :/

2-3 years, if you don't take A Maths or Pure Science subjects is going to make your pre-U life seriously challenging. My view is you don't take any pure subjects in Os, avoid Pre-U at all cost. You will flunk 100%.
In fact, all Pre-U students, mostly, flunk badly in their first year. Sure, there are exceptions, but typically, your first Pre-U year is seriously bad usually. And your first Uni year, post NS, is bad. It just is.
And Pre-U culture is completely different - if you don't not have cohorts from your SS joining you, then you will never truly make many friends. 2-3 years, you will never really find time for anything else - like literally catching up all the way if you stumble in Y1 (inevitable unless you've thoroughly aced your pure subjects).

Are IB schools considered the same as JC?
no bcos the education system and culture is v diff
The IB schools are technically considered as junior colleges, just that they offer IB instead of A levels. If u want the exact differences between the 2 systems google is your best friend, though in summary IB is more of a long term thing where a lot more things contribute to your final score (sort of like a combination of A levels and poly) while A levels is just one shot at the end. Subjects and syllabus are obviously different. IB is usually considered easier to go overseas and I’ve heard from somewhere that it’s apparently easier (???) to get into a good local course too.
As for environment they are probably similar since it’s all a bunch of 17-19 singaporean teenagers, though I think ACS(I) have more foreigners (maybe)
No IB is easier than JC. That is facts, hate me all you want. SG A level you are competing with fellow singaporeans, IB you are competing with international students. It’s so much easier to get max 45 for IB than 90rp for A lvls. ACSI knew it couldn’t compete with RI/HCI, hence they switched to IB. IB students are generally not as smart as their counterparts, but soft skills wise they are better from my observations.
