I went back to listen to Croce's original since it was so far back in my past and I really love the changes Geoff put into this. One of the biggest choice differences in his arrangement was in highly dialing back the guitar. Geoff said he wanted it to feel more like a 'fight song' and upping the percussion to be so dominant really accomplished that, even with all the harmonies he added. Croce's original felt more 'folksy, but with a fun, hoppy rhythm. All the stomps and claps Geoff added kind of gave it a bit of the feeling of something sung at a sports arena. Very smart way to pump up the 'testosterone' while adding some truly gorgeous harmonies. And I love the choice to give 'Slim' a higher register than what had come before. Kind of made him sound young and a little naive in comparison.
I loved the original and sang it around the house until Big Bad Leroy Brown came out. 😂 hate and have to admit that I love Geoff’s version more. Thanks for your reaction ❤
