Alan Arkin was exceptionally protective of Abigail Breslin. When filming the scene in the van where he is using the inappropriate language, Alan Arkin would check her headphones to make certain they were playing music so she couldn't hear, and at the world premiere, he told her mother when she should take Abigail from the theater. When filming the scene when she says she doesn't want to be a loser and starts to cry, Arkin immediately yelled cut thinking she was really crying. She then explained that she was just acting and he cracked up.

i like that we don't see them get home, just back on the road together. moving in a newer, gentler direction

For sure. I felt really good knowing they were going to be closer, regardless of not seeing the return trip.

I saw this in the theater without knowing anything except Steve Carrell was in it. It was such a lovely surprise!
The bit about pushing the van and then the honking horn made me cry from laughter! I grew up with crappy cars and at one time, we had to push my mom's Carolla hatchback like that to get it started. Also, my dad started his truck with a pair of pliers for many years. You learn to just roll with it.

The fact that they kept those bits running through the whole movie made them funnier each time. Just wonderful.

The entire cast was amazing here. Greg Kinnear is someone who nowadays seems a bit overlooked, and that's a pity, because he is excellent. He takes on roles that could have been one-dimensional stereotypes and turns them into people you know, people you might hang out with, a boss, a work colleague. He is particularly excellent at making the "wrong" guy in romcoms someone who may be wrong for the protagonist but could absolutely be right for someone else. He was a lot of fun in Sabrina and he was perfect as the pretentious journalist in You Got Mail.

He wasn't in it much, but he really stood out among a terrific cast. He was such a wonderful actor.

Paul Dano had some amazing roles before this one, including "The Ballad Of Jack And Rose" which may even be a more chilling performance than in "The Batman" or "There Will Be Blood."

Love this movie! Alan Arkin was hilarious and fantastic in this role but I’ve always thought him winning Best Supporting Actor over Djimon Hounsou for Blood Diamond was a bit of a travesty.

That seems to happen a lot with the supporting Oscars (I don't know why they seem to do better with lead performances).
