I ready recently that Rob Reiner happened to come upon Kiefer teaching River the chords for Stand By Me on the guitar. He said he hadn’t heard that song in years. That is when he decided to use it for the movie’s title.
The body is actually from the same novella collection as Shawshank Redemption. It's called Different Seasons, and also has a story called Apt Pupil that was turned into a pretty decent film with Brad Renfro and Ian McKellen.
I remember when this movie came out, six-year-old me went around the house chanting "Lard Ass! Lard Ass!". Boy, did I get in trouble! I love this movie though. Its both light and dark.
I would love to see someone turn "The Long Walk" into a movie. It's one of my favorite King stories. If you're interested in seeing more River Phoenix, I recommend Sneakers and I Love You to Death. Not starring roles; both are ensemble flicks. Both are a lot of fun. You should watch Quiz Show. It was nominated for an Academy Award in 1994, the same year as Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, and Shawshank. It is outstanding.
Wow awesome! One of my all time fave movies. It was kind of weird being an 80's kid and being constantly bombarded by 1950's/60's nostalgia as the Baby Boomers entered middle age and longed for their youth. Dirty Dancing, La Bamba, The Outsiders, The Big Chill, Back To The Future, The Wonder Years etc - by the time I was a teenager I felt like I could really relate to a youthful past I wasn't even alive for! And now my generation is going through the same thing with Stranger Things, Cobra Kai etc - lol
It's not the director, it's the author of the story. Stephen King is a genius in both short stories & novels. I'm amazed how you're short-changing King & how clueless you are about the 50's culture & mindset. The director only makes the story shine if he's any good, but it's the story that counts. You should react to King's novel "Dolores Claiborne" made into a brilliant 1995 movie by director Taylor Hackford starring Kathy Bates, Jennifer Jason-Leigh & Christopher Plummer.

Another wonderful performance from River Phoenix in a great but less known film is “Running on Empty.” A hidden gem.
I have never seen it. Thanks!
The Dead Zone is another King work made into a movie; hit me hard when I saw it in the mid-80s

I love Apt Pupil! I couldn't put it down.
The ironic thing is that the plot was set in 1959 but the song “Stand By Me” was released in 1962
Guys at 12:19.....IT IS JERRY OCONNEL
River Phoenix was in very odd kid's scifi movie with Ethan Hawk called The Explorers.
Love that film; own it on Blu-ray now. So weird the tonal shift about midway through, almost like two movies stuck together.

Another coming of age film for boys is The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton(female author). Directed by Francis Ford Coppola.
A must watch . The original though
The new version has a new score thats just generic 50s guitar and it sucks
Speaking of River Phoenix movies, I really like My Own Private Idaho. It also features a very young Keanu Reeves in a modernized Henry V role.
There are some changes from The Body and the movie. Both are still very good.
There is actually no one from “the Brat Pack” in this movie though. Kiefer was maybe Brat Pack adjacent 🙃
Yes, Keifer would be the only one considered Brat Pack

So true! It's funny how that happens, huh?

What's with this attitude? Jfc
They skipped the best part of the movie.....the pie eating contest.
