Little Miss Sunshine is a 2006 American tragicomedy[2] road film and the feature film directorial debut of the husband-wife team of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. The screenplay was written by first-time writer Michael Arndt. The film stars an ensemble cast consisting of Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Paul Dano, Abigail Breslin, and Alan Arkin, all of whom play members of a dysfunctional family taking the youngest (Breslin) to compete in a child beauty pageant. It was produced by Big Beach Films on a budget of US$8 million.[1][3] Filming began on June 6, 2005, and took place over 30 days in Arizona and Southern California.
The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2006, and its distribution rights were bought by Fox Searchlight Pictures for one of the biggest deals made in the history of the festival.[4] The film had a limited release in the United States on July 26, 2006, and expanded to a wider release starting on August 18.[1]
Little Miss Sunshine was a box office success, earning $101 million, and was praised mainly for the performances (particularly towards Breslin and Arkin), direction, screenplay and humor. The film garnered four nominations at the 79th Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Arndt and Arkin won Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor, respectively, and Breslin was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. It also won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Feature and received numerous other accolades. The film also won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Alan Arkin insisted that Abigail Breslin be listening to music on her headphones for the scene where he was speaking the obscene words, and would check her headphones before each take to make certain that the music was up. At the world premiere, he also asked Abigail's mother that she take Abigail out of the theater during the scene in question.
Another funny story was during the scene in the motel room where Olive breaks down crying, Alan Arkin yelled cut called for Abigail's mother to help her daughter. Abigail then informed him, "No, Alan, I'm acting" and Arkin immediately started laughing.
He was such a decent guy.

I love this movie because even though they were kind of dysfunctional and no one really got what they wanted, they had each other. Like with the van, as long as they push together, they will get going and eventually arrive at their destination as a family.

Yes, the video was "chatty" which I normally hate, but you two make short quips and pay a lot of attention to the story. This is also a laid-back movie, and you two are charming.

Children's beauty pageants are very big in the American South. Strangely enough, it's the political faction that are anti-gay and highly conservative that are most passionate about entering these pageants.
It's professional-level competition, with entry sometimes before they can even walk. Parents (mainly mothers) spent HUGE amounts of money on costumes and dresses, have 'flippers' made for the children (a dental piece that fits over the teeth to give the illusion of adult-type teeth), falls and wigs, makeup and beauty treatments, spray tanning, rigorous talent lessons (singing, dancing, instruments, gymnastics, etc) and comportment (how to walk and pose on a runway).
Little girls (it's always girls) being tarted up like plastic dolls, to win prizes based mainly on their ability to present the illusion of being a miniature alluring beauty queen. Those outside the pageant world/system think of it as at least brainwashing and some think of it as child abuse. These little girls are worked hard to win without their consent. The men involved in this world are at the very least 'suspect'. Looks are in reality not everything, but in the pageant world looks are the ONLY thing.
Obviously, Olive chose this herself. She is too young to understand what's behind it and what it takes to win, and the Little Miss Sunshine competition is one she would not ordinarily gain entry to but for the real winners not being available. She's not lean enough, not buff enough, too pale, and not funded well enough to be competitive. But she's also still innocent enough to not understand why she shouldn't try or possibly win. Her family was too wrapped up in their own individual miseries to see what she was headed for until it was obvious, which was too late. They do make the correct choice and let her hit the stage, giving her so much support and love that, even though she lost and was BANNED from competition in California, she still had so much fun she felt a winner.

A long time ago I used to drive between Nashville, Tennessee and Tucson, Arizona a couple of times every year. The fastest route took a total of around 27 hours, which I would break up into 3 days of driving (10 hours, 10 hours, 7 hours). I usually took a southern route because it was faster, but occasionally I would take a northern route. The southern route was bleak most of the way, but the northern route went through northern Arizona and New Mexico, which were both quite scenic (especially northern New Mexico).

Lorna is Olive all grown up🏆😁... Best road trip was the first time me & a buddy drove from NYC-area (New Jersey, actually) to Florida to visit our friend. After about 18 hours of driving, we entered Florida & thought "it won't be long now!". So naive. Florida is HUGE & our friend was on the other side of the state (West coast) & down towards the bottom in Ft. Myers. After another FOUR hours of driving, we finally arrived. Within the hour, we were restoring body, mind & Spirit in the warm, tranquil waters of the Gulf of Mexico☯️

The most beautiful route I’ve been on is Albuquerque, NM (where they started in the film,) to Seattle, WA. It’s a 20 hr drive, but the landscape changes drastically every 5 or 6 hours, so it doesn’t seem that long.

Since you ask, my favorite US road trip was actually a train trip from Toledo OH to Seattle WA back in the '90s on an AMTRAK train route called The Empire Builder, which traverses the very northern US border and right thru Glacier National Park in MT. I was graced to see that particular mountain pass at 8 PM during a full moon. And the light glistening off the glacier and into my sleeper car created the appearance of a fairy tale land. I'll never forget that spectacle.
I don't know if Seattle is as great a destination today as it was then, though, but the trip there is still worth taking. But there are a lot of magnificent scenic drives in the US, especially those that go through the Rocky Mts to the west coast. I recall HWY 80 through WYO and HWY 70 along the Colorado River in CO (by road or by rail) to be spectacular too.

In 2006 my family and I went on a road trip from California to Kentucky. We traveled the southern interstate highway and returned on the northern interstate. Took us two weeks for the round trip and we went through 12 states. We visited Graceland, the Grand Ole Opry, Loretta Lynn’s ranch, and took a paddle boat cruise. It was quite the adventure! We saw so many amazing places and met some great people.
If you want road trip movie recs, I love Tommy Boy (1995) because it’s hilarious and the best Chris Farley & David Spade pairing IMO; or Dog (2022) which is a great emotional film starring Channing Tatum.

Hi Colin & Lorna, you guys are very matchy matchy shirts today!🙂I did write that before Lorna mentioned it. Abigail Breslin (Olive) would go on to co-star in the sci-fi comedy film "Zombieland" (2009) and its sequel a few years later. I forgot what happened in the big finale we were all waiting for!😄Yes, I haven't seen this since it came out 17 years ago. I used to drive across country from Colorado to Massacusetts once a year when I was in the Air Force. It was a lot of fun and stress releaving, and stopping for food at all the places was fun. Those child talent contests are brutal. They've had several reality shows about them in the U.S. Great reactions to your very first time seeing Little Miss Sunshine, Kids!!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

One of my top ten favorite movies from that time period. The quintessential family road trip from hell. And it makes the previous holder of that title, NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION look pretty lame and stupid by comparison.

The 90% of the screen being a blur most of the time with your faces tucked in the opposite corners is rather unpleasant on the eyes at best and headache inducing at worst. There's gotta be a better way to layout it...

There's really no way to keep everyone happy. Just my two cents as a fellow reactor, I think your blurring and face placement is just fine. Not at all headache inducing for me. I used to use black screen and would get complaints, but ever since I went to blurred screen, no complaints. You maybe could get a teeny tiny bit more of the original content on-screen before going to blur, but overall your editing is just fine. Good reaction and commentary as well!
To anyone who has never uploaded a reaction video to youtube: you cant just upload a video showing the whole movie. RUclips will tell you the video is blocked, and will tell you which parts need to be edited. There's no way around the requirement that you can only show limited amounts of the original content, and it's either blurring or doing black screen.
