Really enjoy your channel. My father was a Naval Chief, his job was hull technician. At five years old he had me in a navy base wood shop he ran at night for the base. Today he would have been looked at as the ultimate maker. God rest his sole. I am about to make a 29.9 feet trawler to travel the loop or part of it. You should consider a new title. Professor! lol. Take care. He taught me all about wood and making with wood but left out the stuff about resin and sheet metal. Well, I learned sheet metal in the HVAC business for 20 years and later learned resin on my own. Thank you for the complete explanation format. I have an old picture of dad standing inside of a mold where he made PT 50 foot fiberglass hulls in Vietnam back in the 60's.

Ild like to see a bass boat transom redo. I know you specifically do sea/inlet boats but maybe an older 80’s-90’s.
Also long hull scratches or wider flatter spot like 4-6 inches or more in size.

I have by accident ended up using a tomato sauce or mustard sauce squeeze bottle for my acetone, it has the little cap for the spout and seals good enough to not evaporate and they come in different sizes.

This would have to one of the best resin comparison videos out.
I've been using predominantly epoxy resin on a stitch and glue design. It's nice to see all the other resins in action with a comprehensive explanation of the pro's and cons based on merit and experience. Saves average Joe having to spend a lot of money doing these tests.
I have used a polyester flow coat purchased for a test because I couldn't find the right information I was looking for. I selected a neutral finish coat as I had an outdoor cabinet which I could use the remaining product on.
I liked the properties of polyester for bottom side finish coat, UV stable, high impact resistance. My build is just a little 12 foot punt and it will likely get beached on the sand, so I was on the search for something durable but still repairable.
My test was on the bond strength to epoxy. A highly contentious subject (poly over epoxy) So I did one sample with epoxy base prepared with scotch Brit only and the other with 40 grit. The 40 grit sample required two additional coats of epoxy to fill the weave suitably so that I could use the 40 grit without cutting the glass. In the end I concluded it could be done, although I was still hesitant because the Scotch Brit sample failed very easily, so it's heavily reliant on the mechanical bond. The key to success is certainly in the preparation and it's likely why people don't recommend it, as you can't control what people do when it comes to prep work.
I later found a vid from Andy from boat works today who explained this process very well.
I'm about to test the abrasion resistance of a two pack product in Jotun hardtop AX. This is the base white and blue for the remainder of the boat colour scheme. It would be cheaper to me for It's use everywhere on such a small build, it doesn't warrant multiple products, other than the Jotun pengaurd HB primer (predominantly used as a filler, not a primer). I have used and like these products, it has great serviceability as it has unlimited recoat time, making repairs easy. However I'm not sure it has the hardness for running up on the beach, but it's serviceable.
I guess where my curiosity leads now....is vinylester over epoxy suitable and is there vinylester gelcoats? My limited research says they are more compatible.
The recommendation from builders I'm working with, is antifouling (non shedding type) mixed with thinner to increase hardness. As it becomes much more easily repaired in comparison to two pack paints. No priming etc. We are talking trailer boats not necessarily requiring a true bottom paint/finish, such as gelcoat. Especially considering it's an epoxy build (sealed). There is one interesting piece of knowledge written in the Gougeon brothers blue book. They say that epoxy was designed when prepared correctly to be sprayed directly with modern two pack paints. I found this to be true have done my own tests, I actually found my pengaurd HB primer to be softer (obviously sandable) than the two pack finish! Bond strength was impeccable. However, there ain't many stitch and glue boats you can just paint straight up without a good bog, fair and high fill prime to get a reasonable finish. This was more applicable to your Brite finished boats with the odd pinstripe!
I guess I'm telling you this, not to solve my curiosity, but to see the thought process of someone who knows far less and see if there are any lessons in some of these thoughts for your material.
I think what we need to move away from a view in society of this is right or wrong. But rather frame it as you have as pro's and cons. I'm a big supporter of knowledge sharing. In that process the truth finds form.

Hi Joe , big subjects and one of my favorite issues as so much miss info on fillers and fairing compounds.
Despite the great job that West System has done showing how to make your own putties and filler using a ready made poly or epox product is usually way way better. If for no other reason than you get so much better consistency. The additives need time , up to 24 hrs to be fully wet out by the resin so mixing at the last minute just doesn’t give the best long term results. But as you know sometimes you just have to do what ever it takes.

My favorite tools for filler work tools are a waxed melamine board for mixing, a 4" dry wall knife, a drywall cheese grater for removing "b staged" excess, and cake icing spatulas for fillet shaping. If you have deep pockets Freeman Supply makes amazing fillet shaping tools. Great info as always!

I've been to paid trade seminars and you're spoiling us with the ease of you tube -thank you- [A request ] could you do a strength and impact test on the different finishing materials over cured lay up... ie. putties ,smoothing coat of resin, gelcoat and whatever your method with a finished great looking exterior gelcoat or paint? My ultimate goal is to make a fiberglass body for a 72 Datsun 510 -in time after a lot of practicing on smaller projects, your teaching is great. thanks Bret

Wow, thanks for the kind words! Glad the channel has been helpful to you! I will try to touch on the bottom paint removal methods for you the next time I have an opportunity in a video. The basics though would be to carefully remove the old bottom paint with the correct paint remover or by carefully sanding it off with a vacuum assist sander or grinder. If the gelcoat underneath is in good condition, and is thick enough it can be wet sanded, buffed and polished back to a shine. If it is in poor condition, or to thin, you would have to add more coats of gelcoat, then wet sand, buff and polish it out. I hope this helps and I wish you the best with your future boat projects!
I use ground garden lime as a filler or filleting with epoxy because it is so strong and light. The lime is also very cheap.

Thanks, glad to help! We usually prime when working with wood or new Coosa.I would imagine if your canoe is fiberglass, and it is clean and dry you should be able to start with your filler, or your gelcoat. I hope this helps and best of luck with your project!

Thank you for a good video on using fairing compounds. I am stumbling thru gelcoat repairs (mostly thremal and stress cracking) on my 22 year old Beneteau sailboat. Apparently thickened gelcoat is not the best way to go when you have "demeled" out the cracks and you are trying to fair them back to flush. I guess I messed that up. Good thing I am practicing on a small removeable hatch first. Not the whole boat. This work is very frustrating and a tougher learning curve than I thought. DIYers can do it but not without some trial and error. Don't expect perfect or professional results. I know I have been and will make lots of first timer mistakes. I am hoping to cut out a few of them and avoid making an unrecoverable mess by learing from professionals. I salute those who can do this well. It ain't easy.

Love the videos. What/how would you fill screw holes that you don't have access to the back? I had to remove rod holders under the gunnel in a skiff. If I put anything in the hole it will just fall into the hull.

You’re videos have been incredibly informational, thank you for all you do! One question here - What resin would you recommend to waterproof plywood for floor decking that will have carpet on it? I initially planned on using polyester to ensure binders in the mat are being broken down, but if there’s no gel coat that’ll be over it, would epoxy be better for it’s water resistant qualities?

I have repaired the fiberglass on the bottom of my boat (6" W x 12" L) and feather-edged the gel coat around the repair. Can I use tinted epoxy and colloidal silica to rebuild the gel coat, and if so, will that seal the fiberglass sufficiently, or do I need to come back with a gel-coat finish over the epoxy? Have you ever used expired 3M vinyl ester filler? I just tested a small batch which is about 6 months pass the best for date - it cured nicely. Will it stick? What are the risks?

I have been watching your videos for a long time. I now have started my first big job. Replacing the deck on my 5m half cab. When i pulled up the floor i found 3 screws drilled from the bottom into the hull. Why was this done? I asked the local fibreglass shop and they said there is no reason to do it. What is the best way to fix this. I was told to knock the screws through and then tape the outside then use resin to fill and glass over on deck side only. Can i use any resin? I have epoxy to use on my deck and Protite low styrene resin

Subscribed! I have a exposed fiberglass strip where i have constantly beached my jet boat. What product would you recommend? I figure i can maybe just paint a coat of resin or gelcoat over it to protect it. No more beaching it.
Thanks, and welcome to the channel! We used to repair a lot of rental jet skis that had the same problem. If there was a lot of wear into the actual fiberglass, we would always add some new fiberglass to build it back up. Then we would paint or gelcoat it. If it is just starting to wear through the gelcoat, then 2 or 3 coats of gelcoat would seal up the exposed glass fibers and make it look better. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

I've seen oriented stranded board (osb) used to build boats. What is your thoughts and recommendations for sealing off the osb to be absolutely water tight bond ? CSM size and woven size ?
I have never used osb on any boat work. I would have to do some research on that on. I don't think I would personally use it vs marine plywood. I wish I had more for you on that one. Thanks for watching
I'm starting to rebuild a 1975 Reinell. I want to repair and "paint" the hull (exterior) a new color. It's obviously an old gel coat. Can I paint over gel coat? What prep work is required? What type of paint should I use. And, what are the pros and cons. Would love to hear you talk about this topic even if you don't make it a full video. Thanks. Mike.
Yes, you can paint over gelcoat. The surface would need to be thoroughly clean, then sand with 220 grit paper. I like a epoxy based primer like U.S paints Awlgrip 545. Awlgrip makes a very good marine paint system that we have used with good results. I will try to touch more on that subject for you guys soon. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching!

Hello, I have a quick question about my boat and how you might attempt the repair that I need to do. I have 4 holes no bigger than 1/8" on the bottom that are directly under the driver console. The boat is a 1990s fiberglass bass boat, and the previous owner tried installing a hot foot and pierced all the way thru the hull I'm guessing using too long of screws. What adhesive should I use to fill in the holes? I don't see any cracks around the holes so i don't think the damage is beyond that. I'll only have access to the holes on the outside. Thanks for any advice you can give, and I appreciate what you're doing on this channel! I hope I can get this done myself but feel discouraged as I have no experience with fiberglass repairs!
That might require some actual fiberglass repair, rather than just a filler. Anything below the waterline that is through the hull is a little more serious in my opinion. Of course every repair is different and it is hard to say for sure without seeing it. If I had to just use a filler, it would be epoxy for me. The west 610 is user friendly, and easy to inject into a hole, but I would consider that more of a patch than a actual repair. You might want to consider taking it in to a shop that does that kind of work and see what they say. I hope this helps and thanks for Watching
What do you think of adding styrene to the 3M vinylester premium to use it as a skim coat? I find that stuff sets up really fast compared to polyester.
I have thinned it with vinyl Ester resin, before. I have not personally thinned with styrene. You could do some test batches or I may try it and see. Thanks for watching

The fibers add strength, the colloidal silica thickens it. The two seem to work well together. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Yikes didn't know about polyester filler not good below waterline. How about the West Systems batch you did with poly resin? I'm assuming it's the poly filler and not the resin that's the problem. Looking for good option to use for scars below my waterline to top with gel coat? I have 5 gal poly resin and 5 gal of Arjay 2011 Medium Weight polyester bonding compound still in stock from my transom replacement and glass work. The Arjay use MEKP and I like that when bonded together with wet glass same catalyst. But after seeing this I'll order up some 3M for the scar repairs. I see some top the Vinyl with a poly filler for final sanding on high visibility areas. Is that OK or is that poly filler bad also at risk as a top coat?
When I bonded my engine bracket to the transom (two days ago), I did three wet glass layers on the bracket side, a good wet troweled layer of Arjay 2001 POLYESTER bonding compound on the 36 grit sanded gelcoat transom outside (to fill any imperfect surfaces) all squished it as I bolted together with 12 stainless 1/2" through bolts. Is that a potential filler/water incompatibility area? Maybe I should 5200 instead of gelcoat the exposed edge? Boat lives on trailer and not water so I hope that's ok. Many many thanks, and BTW your pace and fire hose of information was PERFECTLY DELIVERED in tempo and content on this. Don't slow down and don't speed up (much)🤘
Usually polyester fillers are considered to be best used above the waterline. It is because over enough time submerged, water could migrate into or through the poly. Vinyl Ester and epoxy are best at stopping water. That is why epoxy barrier coats are so popular on polyester hulls for blister prevention. There are usually several ways any job or build could be done with success. I hope the info in the videos will help everyone do the best job possible based on there budget and amount of time they have. I hope this helps and best of luck with your project!

The 29 is all isophthalic polyester resin, 1708 and 1808 biaxial glass over gelcoat. Probably 95 percent or more of all fiberglass boats on the market are polyester. Epoxy is still a great material, and I plan on using it in some of our future projects. Thanks for watching!
after my polyester resin dries hard, do i have to sand before applying each layer of CSM or Woven? i hope this isnt a dumb question. like, say i prime my part or piece of plywood with poly resin, if i let it dry would you suggest sanding before applying my CSM
Yes, you can lightly sand or scuff up the surface of the resin with 60 to 80 grit paper, but you don't want to sand through the primer coat of resin. You don't always had to wait till the resin primer coat has cured completely, as long as it has tacked off, you should be good to go for your next layers of glass. Best of luck with your project!

Can you color grade filler if not using a gelcoat? I have a camo Gheenoe Classic, the interior is a tan-brown that has some holes I would like to fill.
You should be able to add some pigment to most fillers. I don't know how close you will be able to get though.I would try to start with a filler that have a tone in the general ballpark if possible. Hey Mr Joe, is there an expensive diy hvlp spray gun that you would recommend for spraying small gel coat repairs? Also what would you recommend to use for a guide coat when repairing and sanding a black or dark blue gelcoat?

what calalyst are you using with the 3m premium? i missed that sorry. can you get it in white? i'm doing very crude patch jobs on fiberglass below water areas that'll never be seen by the public. i'm not looking for pretty, just looking to seal it quick and efficiently.
It uses a paste type hardener that comes in tube with most polyester and vinyl ester fillers. Most cans come with a tube and it is usually blue. Although red and white hardener could also work. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
After using 3M High Strength Marine filler, you can come right over the top with gel coat (below the water line)?
Yes, I will usually sand the filler some to give the surface some bite, then wipe with acetone, then gelcoat. Best of luck with your project!
When using fillers in polyester resin, do you catalyse for the total volume of resin and filler, or just the volume of the resin?
I catalyze at 1.5 percent for the volume of resin. You may have to adjust up or down slightly depending on temp and batch size. Thanks for watching
