Leica Q2 Hands On: The Moment You've Been Waiting For
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 окт 2024
- Leica Q2, the successor to the ever popular Leica Q, is the moment you have been waiting for! It still retains that same iconic design, paired with the highly capable Leica Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH, but the internals, woah, is now a whole different beast. We've had just over 3 hours to play with it, so how does the new Leica Q2 perform? Was it worth the wait?
***Correction: There was OIS in the original Q so this is not a new feature for the Q2.

Hi everyone update to the video: There was OIS in the original Q, but there were some changes the way it was implemented which when we were told it’s new was not accurate. Will update the info in our description and here on this pinned comment as soon as we get the final word. Thanks.
came here for the Q2, stayed for the ROLEX.
Lol thanks for watching either way
that was one good stealth marketing. it is a beautiful watch that matches the Q2 nicely. (would have gone for a panerai personally...)
Dennis Lim hahaha wasn’t the intention, but it does match the camera quite nicely. My Panerai’s are getting serviced otherwise I would have worn one. Have to say the new Bronzo looks fantastic! Tempting ;)
Hehee... I noticed it as well. I do have one Rolex in my collection (Explorer II), however I prefer my Breitlings, Zeniths, Omegas... It's a matter of taste.
@@TECH360TV I see what you did there...
Bought the Q2 as my first Leica, so far it has been a joy to use. The only downside is that you might get the Leica virus -as I did- and now want an M as well..
Happens to the best of us
Most underrated reviewer on RUclips. Brilliant work, as always.
We appreciate the compliment very much. Thanks for watching and supporting.
SuperPussyFinger thank you! Very humbled by your kind words.
He is. Quality content and strong honest opinion. Great video work as well
straight out of camera video/pic is perfect for me. so beautiful. no need for editing. and the price is beautiful also. money does buy happiness.
Excellent video. Thank you so much for thoroughly testing the camera for us.
As a original Q owner, I can live without extra megapixels for another couple of years... So I will wait for Q3!
Understand. The original Q is still a great camera. Enjoy it
Totally agreed!
Those are going to be hard couple of years.
An excellent review, I have been toying with the idea of the Q2 but would mean selling some of my beloved cameras. As for Singapore I first visited it in 1978. After 43 years of travel, It is still my favourite place.
Nice two tone gmt rollie you have there. Took my attention off of the Q2! haha. Still exited about the Q2.
Thanks and thanks for watching 😊
Me too
Great info, thanks. I'm thinking of getting one in a year or so when they are finally available to the public.
Yeah right now they are backordered. You will enjoy it
the last time you guys did a video on a7Riii by Sony, i went on to buy it. loved it, and 2 months ago, bought a second body.
with this video... looks like i might add the Leica Q2 to my collection soon... oh no...
Lol we get equally poisoned by all the cameras we get to try.
Thanks for the support we appreciate it very much.
You know where to find us.
@@LeicaStoreSg - i found you, i paid for the camera, and i am now eagerly waiting my order to come in. Please make it happen soon, and i will take the camera to Barcelona+Madrid like Bobby did. #notsponsored :D
@@TECH360TV the thing with Bobby and Cameras/Lenses, is that there is a certain sincerely to his presentation and reviews. There are definitely more polished and fancy reviews out there, and more detailed driven ones, but those qualities may not all be necessary in a review. (was so so close to buying that Otus... but it was just too ex and too heavy)
A good review puts the viewer/reader in the shoe of evaluating whether the product is suitable or not. Raises questions, then addresses them. Presents the features, but not over sell. Passionate, not with intention to sell, but because one truly enjoys the process.
There are so much negativity on social media/youtube. Tech360 and Bobby approach to reviews is a breath of fresh air that i enjoy and need. Thank you for the great work, and keep it up!
Dennis Lim thank you so much Dennis. We try our best with every video to improve and be better than the last.
We love the process of testing out cameras and lenses because we are fans of photography first and foremost.
Btw enjoy the Q2 when it comes in. We hope to do a more thorough review on it in the future, but let us know your experiences with it along the way.
The original Q has optical stabilization. A nice enjoyable review to watch and the jpgs look nice. When showing the camera's dynamic range, you should do it with raw files not jpg.
Hi Wen you are right on the OIS. We have pinned a comment to this video correcting that. Actually all pics taken were in DNG format. Also thanks for watching and your kind words. Much appreciated
(3:25) Thank U for the first video that shows actual AF performances.
No problem. We wanted to try and show as much as possible for the limited time we had it. Thanks for watching
The city shot you shoot at 1.7??? And all the building still sharp?!!! Crazyyyyyyy!
Yes. Imagine this at F6 or F11
Nice review, got mine on order! cheers
Thanks for watching and congrats on your upcoming Q2.
Nice gmt master! It reall suits you!
CGI Artist thanks! Much appreciated.
Great review. Has confirmed that I made the right choice in updating from my Leica Q.
Thanks Marky
The original Q had OIS as well
Hi yes. We corrected the info with a pinned comment and amendment to the description
A camera nobody needs but desperatly wants. At least me😂😃🤣
Hahaha this is the case with many cameras 😉
Nice camera. I am not a Leica photographer but I may just buy this for my travel and street photography. My only concern is the extremely high resolution of the sensor which will make loading my photos to my Tab difficult. Can we choose to take photos at a lower resolution like some cameras can? Say, shoot in RAW and medium resolution Jpec eg 24 Mp.
Thanks for watching. Yes you can lower the resolution on the camera depending on what you prefer. It’s a great travel and street camera and with the performance and size you will enjoy it.
Thanks for your opinion. My interest in this camera is not because I am looking for the rangefinder feeling or experience. In the old film days, I have shot a rangefinder camera before but it was not a Leica. In fact it was a fixed lens Canon QL17. I am not looking to shoot a rangefinder camera.
The Q2 somehow has improved all the short coming of the original Q. I like its capability and its size for a full frame camera. It is compact but not that small. Yes, it is not cheap for a fixed lens camera. I am also trying to buy it not because of the brand. This will also not be my only camera. I still have my Canon DSLR, my Lumix Micro4/3 GX9 with a few lenses, a Ricoh GR, a Canon G12, a Canon M100 with the 11-22mm wide angle zoom lens and my most frequently used Olympus TG4. Despite the Q2's expensive price, I can see how I can shoot some high resolution photos with it without having to use my DSLR. My GX9 or Canon M100 would be my backup when I needed other focal lengths. It will be used purely for street and travel photography when I want to carry little with me yet come back with super high resolution photos while walking around. By the way, I am not interested in the video aspect like some people do. My other cameras can do that. I also do not see it as a fashion statement or a status symbol.
However I have only one concern about the camera. There is no built-in flash for fill in which maybe necessary sometimes. Well perhaps I can just use my GX9 or M100 for those occasion.
Nice watch Bobby! :-)
I see that your photos are not very quick in loading. This is not because of a slow pc. You didn't import them on 1:1 in the import phase. You can find those settings on the right hand upper corner!
Thank you for this. Will do that in the future.
Thanks for the nice demo, really very helpful. I hope you will have a test shot in jpg on your next review.
Thanks for watching and yes will test out jpg quality in the full review
Great review but I have to say I’m enamored by the quality of the review! What camera did you use to record this? The quality is exceptional!
Thanks. We used a Panasonic GH5
The video looks surprisingly good.
Thanks for watching!
I’d like to know about the focus peaking: how accurate is it?
It’s accurate. Leica cameras are usually really good with Focus Peaking.
Now I watch your video first before checking other channels! Great job! Still waiting for Leica to have the 0.95 T shirt! XD
NETVO TV thanks for watching!
Nice watch review.
😂😂😂 the watch has great dynamic range
What ever happened to your Root Beer? It suited you so well, it should be in more of your videos.
Ah thanks but it actually wasn’t root beer. It’s the yellow gold/ stainless steel GMT
Thanks for the nice Review, the Leica Q2 is a beatiful camera...
Thank you for watching. Yes it is.
I'm equally impressed with both the in depth review as well as the quality of this video. May I ask which video recorder you guys use to make this video?
This was shot on the Lumix GH5 with the Lumix 12-35 f/2.8, on a flat color profile. A slight color grade was added in post.
Weather sealing good. I drowned my Q by accident shooting a portrait of my daughter in the sea. Single splash and it died. I was insured though so got another copy.
Yes it’s a welcomed addition and from what we were told at the launch it was one of the more difficult things the product development team had to do as they needed to keep the camera the same size as the original.
You mentioned the Q2 having OIS as a new feature,I think if you check, you find the Leica Q already had OIS .....
Yes you are correct. We have a pinned comment addressing it.
As Leica doesn't research, develop or produce their own in-house sensors we can assume they are using the s1r sensor here. Besides the brand and marketing slipslop and the top notch lenses but that you can get for a s1r too, what would be the main reasons to pay the Leica premium price?
I would like to see a review with the q2 vs. the s1r.
Actually the whole sensor discussion of which one Leica uses is up for debate as they are pretty secretive about it. But one thing to take in consideration is the sensor is one variable but the processor is another. The way a camera processes the information from a sensor can make or break the image we see.
The L alliance will be interesting for Leica, especially for the SL as the S1R and whatever Sigma comes out with will of course affect Leica sales of the SL or future camera.
However the “long game” in my opinion is to bring more customers to Leica either from purchasing lenses and using them in their respective camera, but also giving existing customers of the SL for example a native way to buy other lenses outside of Leica that will further enhance the experience like telephoto lenses in the future or perhaps a smaller variable lens etc.
Hopefully we can get the S1R here soon to review to tell you :)
It's kept a secret for an obvious reason if you ask me.
They don't produce processors either. The camera is pretty hyped now, so I'm curious to see a review comparing the q2 to any other camera with the same sensor and what will be left about that hype afterwards.
Great review, thanks :)
Thanks Jess
Can it do 1080p and 4K in manual mode? Or only auto? In your sample it appears it allowed aperture control in video but did you choose auto shutter speed or is there no choice?
Thanks for watching. Honestly we were given no instructions on the video functionality. We just tested it as an average consumer would shoot video, mainly in auto mode. We will try to shoot manual when we get to review it fully.
Good review! Is it works with touch focus on video mode?
Yes it does.
I was looking at the Rolex more than I was looking at the camera.
Haha that wasn’t our goal for this video but thanks for the Rolex love :)
Your 'Gotham City' building is, in fact, Parkview Square [14:30].
Best camera ? CL or Q2
Oohhh that’s tough. Q2 for higher megapixel and feel. CL for interchangeable lenses and size.
Hi Superb your videos! and I love Singapore. But I have a question, I hesitate between buying a Leica Q2 and a Sony Alpha 7 r4 with a 24mm 1.4 GM. I saw that you tested both. Which one to choose ? I like to take photos at night, streets, landscapes, etc. it's not easy ... Thank you
Mauro
Hi Mauro thanks for the compliment. This is a tough one because on one hand the Q2 is a one lens camera combo which is fantastic to use however you are comparing it to a camera where you can have a number of lenses on it.
From a technical standpoint the 24 1.4 is a faster lens so it will be slightly more suited for night, but for street photography the Q is a stealthy camera that allows you so shoot without being noticed.
This is a tough dilemma you’re in. All I can say is you have good taste in cameras
2 pay checks and we Ready to shoot
Lovely grading on the demo, gentlemen. And a really nice video on the Q2, too. Really want to know what did you shoot the whole video on?😀
Thanks Rajesh. We shot it on a GH5.
Thanks for the informative video... Can anyone explain to me... if I turned on the 75mm crop on the Q2, it wouldn't make portraits look better, right? As it is just a crop into a shot made from the 28mm? Thanks.
Yes the crop is made from a 28mm focal length. All you are doing is zooming in. There is a discussion of the digital zoom reduces the megapixel amount more than just cropping in, but until we have more time with the camera it’s hard to answer that question.
Thanks. Great review
Thanks
Correction!!! ---> optical image stabilization (OIS) was/is on the Leica Q original
Mads Krabbe Fotografi yes correct. We are given limited info at the time and have made a correction in the pinned comment.
Can u enter crop mode while shooting video too?
Or any digital zoom?
I didn’t try to be honest. For the full review will attempt to do that

Q2 is a beautiful camera....I could sell my set up for this!
Would be a nice Camera if you could change lenses. But that would kind of destroy their M line
Agree.
oof! The Leica looks super awesome! Unfortunately, it's much out of my price point T.T
Completely understand. Thanks for watching though. Much appreciated
@@TECH360TV I love your work! I keep watching all the videos to support you guys. Keep up the awesome job! :D
Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Did you buy it? Have you used it since? If also, what do you think now? Thanks
Didn’t buy it and haven’t really used it since this first impressions. Will be reviewing the monochrom soon
Which one will you buy for you leica q2 or sony a7riii with gm lense? Can you set shutter speed in video or the same situation as in q1?
As moo said they are different cameras but each having their strong points. As for setting the shutter speed on video we have not tried that yet but will do that for the full review.
Leica makes beautiful compact camera cases for the X1, X2, D-Lux, C-Lux, and other Panasonic-made Leicas (the X1 and X2 were made by Leica). Look up the 19554 case for the D-Lux7 camera - it fits the camera perfectly with no room to spare, fully enclosed and protecting the lens, and it looks elegant - not like the old-fashioned camera cases.
The point of this is that Leica is making a $5k compact camera with the Q2, and then denying that it's a compact camera by not providing a compact case - only providing ugly photographer cases that are used for system cameras.
If Leica were to get their heads out of the sand on this Q2, it would be to provide the elegant carry case type that is available for all of their other compact non-system cameras. The point of that is to keep people focused on what the Q2 really is, and make it fun to carry most places without a camera bag or a half-cover that doesn't protect the lens.
I've been using these cases for 15 years, and they make a night-and-day difference in the pleasure of owning a compact Leica camera.
How about the VDO button? Is it time consuming to find it? As well the button to increase/decrease the brightness
No it’s easy. You press and hold on the button that would change digital zoom and it goes into Video mode.
Sony did that already with the RX1 in the past - (almost) doubled the resolution and the form factor is even smaller! I wonder why you said Leica is the first?
I said it was rare that a camera company doubles the resolution and now has 47megapixels in a camera this compact. The RX1 has 42 megapixels not 47 so yes this could be the first compact full frame camera to have this resolution
Just 3 years ago I had the RX1R II which was similar specs in a smaller body and had 42mp, so Leica is not the first manufacturer in this regards.
Same for the macro function...
Understand but it’s not exactly the same setup
Wish you did the sample image reviews for lumix s1r
Perhaps in future videos
Don't forget about sharping masking tool
is your watch yellow gold or red gold ?
Yellow gold
Any improvement in the buffer?
Didn’t have the original Q next to it to test. Did feel though the buffer filled up relatively quickly when shooting in burst mode.
Will you be shooting a video at the IT SHOW this weekend?
No but went to see what’s happening.
Noise performance is so sick😂 Panasonic s1r sensor are just sad
Panasonic S1R, Leica Q2, and the new SL 2 will all share the same sensor.
Steve Gabrail yes, means both are sucks
@@paullo7970 Why do you think that?
There has been no information regarding if it’s the same sensor.

@@btonelli Wait.... is it? My eyes are playing tricks on me.... looked like the "Root beer"!

I’d like to see a comparison vs. the Nikon Z7 with 35mm 1.8 S lens. (Not even a pro lens.) Or better yet, with the Sigma 28mm Art f1.4 lens. I’d put my money on the Nikon. A lot of money.
Will be a good comparison. Perhaps in the future we can try that. The Z7 is also a very good camera.
Hi, can anybody tell me how to shoot Video in manual mode on the Q2, thanks
They are using the Maestro II processor.
Leica said it’s a new Maestro professor based on the II but still new.
@@TECH360TV So it's a new processor but they're still calling it Maestro II? I have heard of no such thing.
Please give us a link that says Maestro II, because at the launch and speaking to Leica reps they stated this is a new processor.
@@TECH360TV Just go to B&H and search Leica Q2 and look at the specifications.
Based on my recent conversation with Leica that’s an incorrect statement. It’s a new processor from the Maestro II family so it’s not the same.
Hi there.
Have you tested the Sony RX1RII? I've seen in another review, comparing it with the Leica Q2, that the Sony beats the Leica in color cast, dynamic range and other things. Can you confirm that statement in case you compared both?
Thanks.
I watched one of the videos comparing the fujifilm along these two cameras the dynamic range test was interesting, you mean -4 the Sony image still stays as bright as 0?? Hmmm.
Anyways Sony camera’s are usually very good in Dynamic range, but the reality is, if you expose right on your shots whatever editing you do won’t be pushing the images to their limits.
The colours are personal preference. Some prefer Leica colours, some Sony.
The Q2 isn’t without its faults, but overall it’s a solid outing from Leica.
@@TECH360TV
Yes! I was refering to that review. They say and show (and you can see) that the Sony gets more detail from the shadows at same ISO and its color cast is more accurate especially when boosting the ISO (the Leica leans towards the yellow side).
I'm a big fan of compact cameras with big sensors. I've been using for years the Nikon Coolpix A (APS-C) which replaced all my APS-C reflex cameras (one Canon 600D and four 7D). I like it so much that I bought another three spare units.
I also have two Pentax K1 with a bunch of Zeiss lenses, in addition to the Pentax 24-70/2.8 which, while being good, but isn't as good (sharpness, microcontrast, build quality...) as the Zeiss. As you know the K1 is FF and I absolutely love it. Its level of detail, clarity and dynamic range is something I was missing in all my previous APS-C cameras but didn't realize it until having FF.
Now looking for a compact FF (i.e. Leica Q2, Sony RX1RII or waiting for the rumored 60Mp Sony RX1RIII). The money is not a problem, what I simply want is THE BEST compact FF camera and not regreting my purchase afterwards by confirming that any of those show no more sharpness than my K1 and/or less dynamic range and/or worse ISO performance (the noise starts sooner at lower ISOs).
I Guess it’s safe to say Sony will always have the most tech in their cameras, but I found the Q2 image quality impressive at times. Dynamic range was good as well. Is it the best? No, but I want the nest dynamic range I’ll go with Medium Format.
If you are in no rush, can wait to see if Sony comes out with an updated camera then compare.
@@TECH360TV
I'm in no rush. It's better to wait and see what's coming next...
And yes, MF may offers the best dynamic range, but the key point here is portability.
hello and thanks - has realy IBIS??
Thanks for watching. Yes as does the original Q. Corrected this in the pinned comments
Would have been nice to add a built in flash
Yes that would be actually
That rolex is sure distracting
Indeed, I keep looking at the watch instead of the cam. Haha.

Same
There's a mistake in the video. The Original Q had image stabilization too, it's not a new feature.
Hi Milton you are correct. I have written a pinned comment to correct that.
Nice vid!
Thanks!
I you say , it's all shot in RAW , but the internet published work these days shows many Jpegs having dreadful colour bias and poor contrast , making it a total pain for having to work on every image rather than viewing/emailing acceptable Jpegs .
It's interesting how some mainstream reviewers haven't come back after launch and done an in-depth , probably for the want of not upsetting the Leica sponsorship funding possibilities of future times ...................
We shoot in raw but need to convert to Jpeg for video editing purposes. As for follow up review, unless we own the camera which we don’t here, we can only get the camera back when Leica decides. Here in Singapore unfortunately video reviews aren’t given as much validity as other markets so we try our best but sometimes we don’t get the cameras and the time with the cameras we would like.
“I’m showing all the poles and all the flaws on my face to youtube.”
Me: Alright man, I will subscribe.
😂😂 thanks for subscribing
Get the Q2 and sell my Q-P? or keep the Q-P and wait for the Q2-P?
Hmmm.. that’s tough. The Q2 is a big upgrade but the Q-P is still a great camera.
I wouldn't sell it unless you can sell for decent amount of what you paid for it. It sounds huge upgrade but really it isn't. If you think this is big upgrade, wait and see Q3. Now that's big upgrade. Unless you have a fat wallet, this is not worth upgrade if you consider how much it costs.
Weather sealing, 4K video, double the resolution, faster autofocus, 20fps with the electronic shutter, better battery life and redesigned battery isn’t a big upgrade then I don’t know what is.
TECH360.TV I know it is subjective. But not everyone needs those feature because in the end, what matters is the picture quality. As for me, I don’t shoot video with Leica Q, 24mp is more than enough, takes indoor photography mostly so weather seal isn’t a big deal, never ran out of juice on main battery even though I always carry a spare one. What I consider big change would be different focal length lens, wider aperture, lighter weight, closer macro shoot mode, image processing speed, .. etc. I know it will be less likely to expect different focal length lens on Q series in the future but the rest can be expected in the future model.
@@media1981 Good video but I like your comment! You are perfectly right, I think exactly the same as You! I'll keep my Q for the moment and attempt the Q3 for change it, eventually... The new Q2 is good for those who do not yet have a Leica...

Yes the Sony, but the Q is higher res and also went from 24MP to 47.3 in addition to 4K video etc.

"... the original Leica..." huh
I forgot to say Q after original Leica. Sometimes we miss out a word or letter sometimes. Happens to all of us 😊
Hipsters around the world rejoice.
On each and every channel, that Reviews the Leica Q2: the same mistake. 47 MPIX is not doubling the Resolution. Not even close!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do your Physics homework or don't do a review!
24-47 MP what would you call that then?
@@TECH360TV Well - to keep it short:
1. Resolution is defined by: how many linepairs (or dots in a row) are resolvable by a sensor.
2. If you double the number of MP on a 2D sensor, you just have to increase the pixel count on the x-axis by 41% and on the y-axis by 41%. Becaus 1,41x1,41=2 (approx)
--> By doubling your MP-count you just increase your resolution by 41%. Shocking, but that's what it really is.
(To double Resolution, you have to quadruple the number of MP on a 2D-Sensor.)
It is a common misconception, but to be fair: a lot of people make this mistake.
Cheers...
Math error. You're thinking double linear, not double total.
@@dalethorn2 Did you even read the Definition of Resolution?
1. You can say: Total amount of Pixels has doubled (24 to 48 Mpix). That is perfectly correct.
2. You can NOT say: the Resolution has doubled. It is just wrong when you look at the definition of Resolution.
An Addition: Look at printer resolution. Let's assume you want to print with 300 ppi on a4, then you need 3500x2480=8.7 Mpix. If you want to print twice as large with 300 ppi (means: double height and length) you need 7000x5000=35 Mpix.
You are just misleading people by saying, that 24Mpix delivers a doubled image resolution compared to 12Mpix. Resolution is always measured in linear terms. The term resolution speaks for itsself: resolving detail (especially two dots sitting next to each other - and that is always linear!)
...the background music is annoying and distracting...i had to stop watching the review...sorry...your presentation looks good though mate...
No worries, thanks for watching what you could. Much appreciated

@@TECH360TV I almost read that as fists ! The main interest is picture quality. I love my Leica Q, but this is tempting .....
Hahaha definitely not fists 😂 the image quality is a big jump. 47.3 megapixels, great detail, color etc. Leica nailed this one have to say
@@TECH360TV Agreed. It also has 4K and Cine functions. I'm curious how in camera black and white jpegs will look, although those may be a waste of the new sensor.
It’s something we wanted to try but didn’t get a chance to due to limited time. From Samples I saw especially in High Contrast mode they are very nice.
