Pallette Master is *the* most buggy, unusable application I've ever had the misfortune of *trying* to use. With your help (thanks) I got it to work (using Color Munki) ... once, a couple of years ago, when I bought my SW271. Accordingly, the monitor keeps reminding me it needs calibration. Since then it's never worked properly and now, with my new Mac Studio, it just refuses to validate. First I had to switch from a display cable (w/dongle) because it just didn't see the monitor at all -- wasted a lot of money for the adapter! Then, with USB-C it sees the monitor but no amount of trouble shooting solves the validation failure. The monitor is nice but this time-wasting app makes me leery of buying another BenQ product.
It is the software, and they are making improvements. About the connection issues, there may be some explanation and ways around that but I am late to your specific setup and issue. About the validation there are numerous things that can cause that. The hardware is almost never the issue, it is the software that can be lacking at times. If you like to try, trouble shoot and diagnose this. Feel free to dm me on insta or Facebook. If you are just sharing your experience and thoughts, I appreciate this and will note this information down to share for future improvements.
It does not happens on all machine. And most of the time you don't know this is happening but when it happens with hardware calibrated display, this is where the validation fail issue starts.
This Palette Master Element calibration software drives me crazy. Always I got trouble. Now with the latest update it's not even recognising my i1 display pro device.
Very helpful video Art. I think there is an HDMI levels setting in some monitor system OSD. I see they are no longer on the SW321C. Yet there is a USB-C level 2 or 3.1, difference being refresh rate. No idea if this will affect calibration data transfer.
@Neil Snape, thank you for the feed back. From my experience, the HDMI setting on the OSD has always been grayed out for me especially on a Mac. So other input ports seems to be a much better option to side step this issue. Data transfer speed / refresh rate in this case does not affect the calibration. The range of RGB output does.
After much digging found that Windows 11 did not identify my 2700PT BenQ. First problem fixed! Tried to calibrate with 1.3.15 but that did not identify my i1 Plus. But 1.3.16 did and ran a calibration. The average delta E passed at 1.76. The maximum delta E failed at 6.43. Have a USB to C on order. I believe I followed your recommendations as how to set up PME correctly. Am running a test print to my local lab today to see if it is acceptable to use before the new cable comes. Thanks for your help. Ted
∆e could be cause by the video card driver, I would check that you are using Nvidia Studio driver if you have a compatible card, don't use the game ready driver. Otherwise, it is a lot of diagnostic
I was wondering, are each of the calibration presets calibrated separately or will the calibration apply to each of the presets when selecting panel native? If I select AdobeRGB and attempt to modify the luminance value to 80, the default becomes custom. Also, what is the difference between the RGB primaries, the defaults, and the measurement calibration preset? How do they work exactly? Thanks for making these videos.
Each calibration is in its own separate slot. Changing the luminance will put it into custom because this is your "custom" setting and it is only the user-facing GUI part, this is nothing to do with the actual calibration until you calibrate the display. The differences between various RGB primary is the color gamut you choose to use. Defaults, to which, there are a few are various suggestions.
Hi dear ArtIsRight! I have a same problem like the other but nothing helps. I use a AORUS Serie X Tower and bought the PD3220U for my graphic and illustration works. I connected my tower with HDMI cable and with an USB cable too. So I can use my keyboards also on my laptop that is connected with the USB-C Port. ( I want to use both Tower and Laptop with the same monitor) This works fine. But the software says that the monitor isn't connected with my PC. I read that I have to change the color system in NVIDIA. I try to use it but it also doesn't work and with a new start it is back on the old system standard. Have you an idea for me what I can do? Thanks and greetings from switzerland!
Hey @ArtIsRight thanks very much for this video, but unfortunately I'm still having issues with failed calibration. I'm coming out my laptop into a docking station and then docking station to the monitor (I've tried lightning and displayport). I've tried a lot of the recommended calibration settings from different sites and it's still failing. Any suggestions before I return this?
Hi, Art! Thanks again for all your videos. Even after following all of your advice (one exception, below) I still cannot get PME to recognize my i1Studio device. I know the device works because I used it to profile my Mac PowerBook monitor using i1Studio software. I uninstalled the old ColorMunki software; I connected the device using a powered USB 2.0 hub (a suggestion from X-Rite); and I installed five different versions of PME. In every case I get the error message that PME doesn't detect my device. Any suggestions? One thing: I don't know how to check whether I've got the right OEM driver for the i1Studio, as you advise. The X-Rite website isn't easy to navigate in this regard. I will keep trying. Thanks in advance for any advice.
John, I am aware of this issues with some PEM versions and it has to do with X-Rite device service but beyond that I'm not sure what else could be causing this. Have you tried on another PC?
@@ArtIsRight I got it sorted out after two calls to BenQ tech support. On the first call I was told to uninstall i1Studio for PME to work. This seems insane because it means I would have to install i1Studio every time I wanted to create a paper profile and uninstall it again when I wanted to recalibrate the BenQ. Anyway, it didn't work. On the second call I was told to do two things: (1) uninstall any .icc profiles for the monitor that I had created using X-Rite hardware and software, and (2) connect the monitor to my Mac with a USB-A/USB-B cable (perhaps this was in one of your videos, but I missed it). This worked. The calibration ran slooooowly, but it passed the validation tests beautifully. I hope the details I report may be helpful to you.
I have a PC connected to my SW 321C via HDMI and failing calibration. From Benq support I did the following two things, and hey presto, my monitor now passes calibration. On the Benq monitor (SW 321C) I set System/RGB PC Range from Auto to RGB (0-255) and on my PC NVIDIA Control panel, I selected "use NVIDIA Colour Settings" and set O/P dynamic range to Full. Now calibrates via HDMI.
Your videos are great! So clear and informative! I am running into some trouble. After trying multiple things and checking i've done the things mentioned in this video, I am still getting a failed calibration. After calibration it also says 'target luminance:0' even though I have entered luminance as 100. I am using a Benq SW270C, and a Metabox Prime-S P960RC laptop with Windows 10 version 20H2, OS build 19042.1165, i1 Display Pro Plus calibrator, PME v 1.3.15, and am connecting the monitor to my PC with a display port to mini display port, and a usb C (3.1 Gen2). I have only recently purchased the calibrator and this is my first experience with screen calibrating, so I'm not sure if i'm missing something simple. I have tried several times now and have not yet been able to successfully pass validation.
Your laptop has a variety of connector. I think there may be some conflicts. Based on your spec your type C port is technically a Thunderbolt port with Display Port (DP) 1.4 signal, So what I like to do is just use this port with the SW270C and don't use the DP to mini DP, you don't need that. See if the signal go thought and if the calibration works.
Hello Art. Thanks you so much for your videos. I have been trying to solve some problems with my calibrations, but I didn't quite figure it out yet. I have a SW270C monitor, with a Macbook Pro, connected with a USB Type C to USB Type C, and I have an X-rite i1 Display Studio. I can run the calibration with the native software, but the Palette Master Element does not recognize the device. Also, different problem, is that when I calibrate the monitor with the native software (only I can do it anyway), immediatly after I can see the colors changing back and forth all the time. Any suggestion would be much appreciated. Thank you
@@ArtIsRight hey! thank you for your videos, but I still have the same problem with my SW270C monitor and the X-rite i1 Display Studio, but the unique difference is that I'm using Windows 11. Do you know how to solve that? Thank you again
Hello @artisright ; i a bought a PD2700U YESTERDAY. But am unable to run palaette master element to caliberate the display. It shows an error read as "usb cable no connected" but infact i have connected the type - b to type - a cable provided with the monitor to my PC. I have tried all the troublshooting suggested by in your channels & also have tried multiple factory resetting of the monitor as well but og no help. Can you please provide a solution tho the above situation. Thank you :) Looking forward to hearing back from you.
Hello Art, I am running into an issue while i try calibrating my newly purchased Benq SW321c using the Palette Master Element 1.3.11 and Spyder 5 colorimeter. I am getting really high delta values on the blacks, whites and greys (averages around 25)and the validation report is failing. I have tried various combinations Using 1) Basic Settings 2) Advanced Settings with Absolute Zero Blacks 3) Advanced Settings with Relative blacks 4) Advanced Settings with 16Bit LUT I am using the Benq, mirrored to a 13” MacBook Pro 2015. I am using the Mini DP to DP cable and a USB uplink cable to connect the MacBook pro and Benq. I am using the USB side slot provided behind the monitor to connect the Spyder 5 colorimeter to calibrate the screen I have also ensured that the display settings such as auto brightness, night mode etc are disabled. Not sure if this maybe a bug or if I’m still doing something wrong here.
ArtIsRight Thank you, for the link. It did crash on a few occasions in the last phase of calibration, when the screen gets brighter. Ive managed to create 3 calibration slots thereafter.
Yes, that’s correct. It still puzzles me, as to why the app kept crashing for a while, at the same point, just as the calibration was coming to an end. It worked just fine after that. I managed to calibrate 2 slots at 120 and 80 candela on my primary device and a third one over a different device
Hey Art! In the past I've successfully validated multiple calibrations. But I recently reinstalled windows from scratch, and now my calibrations are way off. They look super blue or even black. The max deltas are in the 40s. Do you have any tips on this issue? If it means anything, I'm using a sw2700pt which still has my old profiles, but my new windows system doesn't have them.

Hi Andrew, you can try this to reset the display ruclips.net/video/eG3HrnUvHYA/видео.html See if this helps. There's really no need to reset the display when the computer is formatted but it does not hurt. Do you have i1Profiler installed? And can you check this for me ruclips.net/video/PDoDwMIFpeM/видео.html this way we are sure it is not running in the background or starting with the system. Otherwise, I would advise that you try PME 1.3.10 because it has an updated X-Rite driver package. Do you have another display port cable that you can try or perhaps try calibrating it with HDMI and see if there are any differences in the result. Please keep me posted.
@@ArtIsRight I just tried all those things including the hdmi - no luck yet. I have i1 Profiler installed, but do I actually need to do anything with it? I just tried versions 1.3.8 and 1.3.10 but those didn’t work either. Also during my calibration attempts, I saw the overlay in the center of my screen was blinking at regular intervals. Is that normal? Do you have any other tips?
Hello Art, thanks for the video, I have subscribed. My question is: I have tried to calibrate my BenQ SW271 a lot of times. I have spent many hours on it. I watched a lot of videos. I use a MacBook Pro (2019) with Calalina 10.15.6. I have unchecked HDR, deleted Spyder software, dimmed my lights, tried everything but each time the calibration fails with big numbers. Can the calibration device that I am using be the problem? I am working with Spyder 4. I know it is a bit outdated but as PME still supports it I would expect it to work. Thanks for your reaction. Edith
Hi Edith, welcome! Glad that you joined. What size is your MBP? Also when you set it up initially did you start fresh or did you at anytime used migration assistant or time machine to restore the computer from a back up?
Hello Art, I have now. And ..... it passed! It might also have to do with the fact that I closed my laptop and only had the benq screen on. Anyway ... I am happy. Thanks a lot for your help! Edith
Windows 11. Updated the NVidia card, unplugged and cleaned all contacts and re-plugged all connections but Pallet Masters Elements does not recognize the monitor. I1Profiler works. Any more tricks? Thanks, Ted

I am trying to calibrate Benq SW240 with x-rite i1 and newest Palette master ultimate and I get failed calibration report. I recalibrated it few times still failed report. I am using Deltaco usb C to display port cable ( 4k uhd, 60hz) I was able to calibrate it about half year ago with iprofiler. Now it will not support old x rite device. What should I do?
Calibration failure is not that device is not supported. There's usually software conflicts. I would contact your local BenQ support for help on this. And if calibration fail twice, it will do continue to fail unless variable change, meaning software conflict was removed. etc. dm me if you need help, I won't see reply to comments.
Hi Art... I tried to calibrate my sw240 for display p3 but it always failed validation test. I read the report and the red color is failed due to ∆E is more than 9. Is it because the coverage of sw240 on display p3 which only 95%? Or is there any way to fix it? Is it okay to go on with that calibration even though it is failed on validation test? Oh ya, I am using windows 10, spyder express 5, and using display port cable, and the latest updated palette master. Could you please give me some advice to solve those problem. Thank You.
Hi Art-thank you for your helpful videos! I’m hoping you can provide some guidance on a validation failure I’m running into. I’m running two SW2700 monitors on Windows 10 (NVIDIA GEFOrce RTX 2070 SUPER). One monitor is passing and the other is failing. The failure is on the average delta (it passes on the maximum delta). I’m using a Spyder5 pro, display port cables and have dimmed all the lights (with a little ambient light coming in from the closed window shades. My settings are D65, Panel Native, 120 luminance, 2.2 Gamma, Absolute Zero, Profile Verison 2, 16 bits LUT and Large patch size. I'm running PME v1.3.12. Any suggestions?
Are both displays USB cables hooked up simultaneously during calibration? That may be the issue. What you have to do is pull the USB cord out from the one that you are not calibrating. ruclips.net/video/Rxsr8QWBRMw/видео.html let me know if this works.
@@ArtIsRight Thank you Art, I had not seen that video. I did have a USB cord in each monitor. I removed them, restarted my computer, plugged the USB and Sypder into monitor 1 (the one that passed) and recalibrated. It passed again. I then moved the USB and Sypder to monitor 2. It again failed on the average delta (although this time it was 2.16, the lowest is has been).
I would give monitor 2 another try, one more thing that you can do too is remove the display cable completely from display 1 and see if that makes a differences.
@@ArtIsRight thank you Art! I’ve tried that and the issue I’m running into now is that when I run the validation PME switches from monitor 2 to monitor 1 (even through it’s unplugged). The measurement and LUT writing go fine on monitor 2 but it switches over to monitor 1 when I try to validate. It has done this same thing 3 times now. I tried not extending the displays in the display settings but then PME doesn’t recognize that there are two monitors and it won’t have separate profiles for each monitor. Any suggestions?
@@ArtIsRight I'm starting to think it's a hardware issue. I've re-run the calibration on just monitor 2 five times now with monitor 1 completely unplugged and am consistently failing on validation.

Try 1.3.15 you can download from the website. Software issues happens on machines, new products or not. Each computer setup is different and can introduced variables.
@@ArtIsRight i will try, thanks, but who is ensuring that the former version is secure and has no vulnerability ? Could you check and Make sure that the Spyder software is not running in the background. On the menu bar at the top of the screen, if you see the Spyder symbol there close it before you run PME. This could be software conflict. Better yet go to system preferences, users and group, and in the login items tab, if you see the Spyder software there, remove it.

Hello - I just purchased the new Spyder X2 Ultra, and now Palette Master Element will not open past the initial splash page. I chose "Spyder X" from the list, and "Check Sensor", and nothing happens. I click "Start" and nothing happens. This is for a BenQ SW320, btw. Any ideas? I was able to get it to work with my old Spyder 5, btw.
Thank you - that’s what I figured was the case. I’ll check in on the Palette Master Element download page every so often to see if the update has been posted.
I have recently purchased BenQ SW240 to plug with macbook pro13" (non-retina, mid-2012 model). Downloaded the palette master element and tried calibrating the hardware with Spyder 5. the problem starts here, when the calibration is nearing 98% ~ 100%, the screen turns either cyan/magenta. the validation of the software shows that it has failed with "Delta E" values hovering in the range of around 30~40 !! I tried with a Windows OS laptop and it worked like a charm. The only thing i set before calibration using Windows OS was the "HDMI PC Range" at 0-255. But with macbook the option is greyed. Need your help to fix the issue.
@Mayukh Das, sounds like you are using the HDMI cable. Yes on Windows you can set the range but on Mac it is more limited. So in this case I would suggest that you use the mini display port to display port cable that came with the display instead of the HDMI. Try recalibrate and keep me posted. Also, what version of PME are you running?
ArtIsRight i am using the mini display port cable supplied by BenQ and using the latest version of PME. I have re- installed Catalina and PME a couple of times but the problem remains
@Mayukh Das, this may be a bug with PME and SW240. I'm going to test it on mine when I have a moment. For now your best action is to contact your local BenQ support and try to obtain the previous version of PME 1.3.7 and try that version out. It could solve the issue. This is not a Catalina issues but a PME issue. I'll keep you posted on my progress.
@Mayukh Das, I've done a test on my 15" MacBook Pro 2018. On both Mojave and Catalina, with no issues. At this point, there are a few things that you can try, but either way, we know at this point that it is not the display. Most likely it is either software or hardware on the laptop. Being that the laptop is older, my suspicion is that it is hardware related. One more test that you can do is to install MacOS on a fast USB 3.0 Stick or Jump drive and then boot into the USB stuck, install PME and try running a calibration there. If it fails then it hardware related, it could be the Spyder 5 or your computer hardware. If it works then it is your main OS installation that is the issue.
Hi I have massive problems after the latest update from 1.3.7 to 1.3.8 I tried five times and the validation failed...with strange color cast.. my system SW320 MacBook Pro 2018 vega 20, usb c to Display Port.. after downgrade to1.3.7 works again ... I was hoping the new version Works better with Lightroom.
I will try the new version on my SW320. I am currently testing the SW321C where there are no issues, nor with the SW270C on Mac. I too use a USB-C to Display port adapter. Also I test with a USB-C to HDMI from Apple as well as Aukey, both have worked without problem. The cables themselves though have to be the latest spec and of high quality. I do recommend yet forget to do it: when unboxing tape the supplied BenQ cables with label stains BenQ. The supplied cables are exactly right. Other cables sometimes work and sometimes not. IF I have something to report back on the SW320 and v 1.3.8 I will comment here.
@Neil Snape, thank you for the feed back. I'll be testing the SW321C soon. As far as the SW320, I should run a calibration test on it too. Let me know what you find. 1.3.8 there are some very minor issues but non on an os with no drivers or software conflict.
@Mb Flo, 1.3.8 did gave me some issues on my MacBook Pro with the SW270C, but that is attributed to software conflict going on in one of my system. When I test it on another Mac everything works great. Something that you can try to do instead of upgrading is to use a Mac app called "App Cleaner" to uninstall PME and download a fresh version into the system. App Cleaner will remove all of the preference and plist files associate with the old version of PME. Sometimes this can be the root of the issue. Give this a try and keep me posted.
@Mb Flo, I ran into quite a few issues calibrating 1.3.8 with the SW320. BenQ has been notified of this. If there's any updates, I'll let you know. My entire screen turned magenta, probably similar to yours. So in this case, I am speculating that PME is not talking to the LUT correctly.
Hi, I hope you get to see my message, I really need your Help, I have Benq 320, it has no signal on display port, I have bought and changed cables to no avail, but it does work with HDMI, I also have a huge problem with the calibration, I have the old colourmunki photo which failed to connect to pallet master despite showing on devices that it was connected so I went out and bought the i1 display pro on your recommendation(not blaming you for the purchase just to be clear) and it is not recognized by the profiler and not even PME yet works with displacal I have a dell 2515 packed somewhere which worked a treat with display cal and its native please help me not get back to it I want this BenQ to work,,,,, I really hope you see this msg if not whoever sees this if you can help I will be grateful.
Answers these questions for me and we’ll go from here. 1. What computer (Laptop - Mac specify the model, year and size, Desktop, iMac, all in 1 PC, custom build, etc ) 2. What is your Operating System (OS) version are you using? (For Mac please specify the dot release, for Windows please specify version / build number) 3. What calibrator are using? 4. What version of PME are you using? 5. What BenQ model do you have? 6. What cable are you using to connect your BenQ to your computer for the display signal, HDMI, Display Port, etc. 7. If you are using USB-C skip this question, if not, are you using a USB link cable between your laptop and display? 8. If you are using Mac was this a clean install or was the OS upgraded from a previous version at any point (I.e. From Mojave 10.13.x to Catalina 10.14.x)? Or was this Mac restore from a back up, time machine or other wise? 9. For PC, what GPU are you using? If Nvidia are you using their new Studio Driver? 10. Were you able able to successfully pass the validation at some point?
That is one way of looking at it, but this is a while back now. The latest version of the program is stable and works well. I would watch other videos on my channel and get the latest info. Or just vent as you just did, works well too.

Don't know what I would do without your videos. Thanks!
Happy to help!
Amazing videos as always. I had no idea about the HDMI range limitations, but it's just what I was needing to know!
I hear you!
I would dm me on insta or fb if you want dianostic help. I need more information
See my other comment. Need much more info than you provided to help.
Glad that it worked, there're 2 videos that talks about cables and connectors but it's ok. as long as it works.
Now calibrates via HDMI.
good
Your videos are great!
Thank you
Give this a look ruclips.net/video/WECg_yYBlpU/видео.html if this does not work DM me on FB page or insta
Hey! did you find out how to solve this problem? I have exclaty the same issue with the same monitor and same X-rite i1 Display Studio
Palette Master Element (PME) is for BenQ SW hardware calibrated display only. PD you would have to use the calibration device OEM software.
@@ArtIsRight Thank you for your prompt response. Got it :)

Hello Art,
I am running into an issue while i try calibrating my newly purchased Benq SW321c using the Palette Master Element 1.3.11 and Spyder 5 colorimeter.
I am getting really high delta values on the blacks, whites and greys (averages around 25)and the validation report is failing. I have tried various combinations Using
1) Basic Settings
2) Advanced Settings with Absolute Zero Blacks
3) Advanced Settings with Relative blacks
4) Advanced Settings with 16Bit LUT
I am using the Benq, mirrored to a 13” MacBook Pro 2015.
I am using the Mini DP to DP cable and a USB uplink cable to connect the MacBook pro and Benq. I am using the USB side slot provided behind the monitor to connect the Spyder 5 colorimeter to calibrate the screen
I have also ensured that the display settings such as auto brightness, night mode etc are disabled.
Not sure if this maybe a bug or if I’m still doing something wrong here.
Download .10 here and give that a try ruclips.net/video/8rjRoIe0-mo/видео.html if it does not work there's more diagnostic that can be done.
ArtIsRight Thank you, for the link. It did crash on a few occasions in the last phase of calibration, when the screen gets brighter. Ive managed to create 3 calibration slots thereafter.
So you were able to get 3 pass validation correct? I want to be be sure :) Let me know.
Yes, that’s correct. It still puzzles me, as to why the app kept crashing for a while, at the same point, just as the calibration was coming to an end.
It worked just fine after that. I managed to calibrate 2 slots at 120 and 80 candela on my primary device and a third one over a different device
Awesome, it work and works well, that is all we can ask. :)

Hi Andrew, you can try this to reset the display ruclips.net/video/eG3HrnUvHYA/видео.html
See if this helps.

Hi Edith, welcome! Glad that you joined. What size is your MBP? Also when you set it up initially did you start fresh or did you at anytime used migration assistant or time machine to restore the computer from a back up?

Have you done all of this? ruclips.net/video/hDHBodulVbw/видео.html

I should add that I have the latest version of Palette Master Element ( V1.3.19) - thanks.
PME is not yet compatible with Spyder X2, an update is needed.
Thank you - that’s what I figured was the case. I’ll check in on the Palette Master Element download page every so often to see if the update has been posted.
👍🏼 I'll probably do a video about it as well.
ArtIsRight thanks for the help. Will definitely try and keep you posted.
If it works then it is your main OS installation that is the issue.
my palette master element keep shutting down when i try open it
I would contact your local BenQ Support for help on this. It could be a version issue. but I don't have any basic info of your system spec.
@@ArtIsRight that would be a lil difficult... i live in the caribbean
And let’s get started ..
Before we get started
lol 😂
happen....
@@ArtIsRight thank you ;) will try today...
1. What computer (Laptop - Mac specify the model, year and size, Desktop, iMac, all in 1 PC, custom build, etc )
2. What is your Operating System (OS) version are you using? (For Mac please specify the dot release, for Windows please specify version / build number)
10. Were you able able to successfully pass the validation at some point?
spent a lot of money for a monitor that needs a crappy software that permanently causes problem by opening it... what a shame!
That is one way of looking at it, but this is a while back now. The latest version of the program is stable and works well. I would watch other videos on my channel and get the latest info. Or just vent as you just did, works well too.
