- What happens if you use Autofire…
My theory as to how Ocelot detects the use of Autofire in the GameCube version, and presumably also the PS1 version, is that it's based on button press frequency. Which is to say, there is no special API that reports when a controller's Autofire is enabled, so the game software has to detect it by other heuristical means. This is because I've occasionally managed to trigger the "You're using Autofire" reaction without using Autofire, simply by pressing too quickly. A few folks in the comments have mentioned similar experiences as well.
The reason why certain controllers get past it may be due to the way in which the controller generates rapid button presses. For instance, I've noticed that some controller Autofire mechanisms don't send a continual stream of button presses, rather they send them in erratic bursts. Whether this is a deliberate mechanism aimed at defeating heuristical detection of Autofire in games, or just dodgy controller circuitry, I don't know. Игры
So no joke, one of the speedrunners of this game that I know mashed so fast, the game thought it was autofire.
Source?
Damn lol. Wish i knew who it was.
As a speedrunner, you should give up immediately unless this was a part of the challenge/rules of that speedrun. =]
Hahaha I wanna see that
A speedrunner to surpass Metal Gear... !
The first time we played this my bro was just about to hook up the turbo controller when Ocelot said this.
lol
What he say after hearing that?
I was using a turbo controller after this I never used one again
Does he know though? Or is it just a scare tactic?
What happens if you use turbo?
Fun fact: when I played this section as a kid, my first thought was "I wonder what will happen if I call the Codec during this part?"... not realising that the Codec button was also the surrender button.
Snake was literally like "No more... I can't take it....!" before the machine even got turned on.
You big girls blouse. Lol
Ocelot was probably so disgusted lol.
What kind of sick bastard cock blocks Ocelot from his BDSM session with the Big Boss' clone?
His body also still smokes like he’s been tortured for a long time if you do it instantly on ps1 lol
That cracked me up!! XD
I thought in the ps1 version if Ocelot detects autofire He says "No cheating" and gives Snake a lead haircut
I was like ohh I wonder if you keep that haircut though to the end of the game. Then I released something.
In the ps1 version is so much harder
In the PS1 version there was no punishment for using autofire.
That is one of the few times my turbo-thumb came in handy.
I'm hoping there is a game somewhere in the world that pressing one button repeatedly makes you a better player because that'd be MY game.
"lead haircut" has to be the most badass sounding way to describe someone getting shot in the head I've ever heard of.
In the PC version, Ocelot did
Liquid: YOU DID AGAIN OCELOT!
Ocelot: Hey he used Autofire.
Liquid: Oh well that's okay then.
wow... so.. that's the punishment in the remake...damn, the break the 4th wall alot, even at the point to even TORTURE THE FUCKING PLAYER. XD
These developers were talented
Liquid *to Snake* : You cheated not only the game, but yourself. You didn't grow. You didn't improve. You took a shortcut and gained nothing. You experienced a hollow victory. Nothing was risked and nothing was gained. It's sad that you don't know the difference.
The Gaming Mole: Brad_Ry LMAO
@@SinbadNaiver it killed you in the original PS1 game too. They coded it to look for turbo controller use. Turbo controllers have an exact speed they'll pulse width modulate the button signal, it was easy enough for them to code it in.
Ocelot: "No full auto in the prison!"
Snake: "That's not full auto, this is." *dies
Ocelot: "Ok, damn bro."
I understood that reference.
Underrated comment
I only got this because RUclips recommend me a shitty airsoft video the other day, damn
lol
im dyyying lmao
You can just use a 3rd party controller and he won't know.
I noticed this on the PSX version.
StuffandThings85 hahahahhahahahahahhahahahhhahahhahahahahhaa
What controller though and it has to be on the PS3.
Ocelot: don't even think about using autofire, or I'll know.
Me with a third party controller: I'm four parallel universes ahead of you
"Don't even think about using 3rd party controllers either, I'll know that too."
I remember having a cheap-as-hell controller so shoddy it was more like 9th party, but it had an autofire feature, and it of course worked on the PS1 original. It also tricked Mantis into thinking I switched ports if I just turned the autofire mode on and off...
9th party 😂
Im fucking dying 🤣
Hahaha 9th party
9th party lmao
I swear, the first time I beat Mantis I didn’t know you had to change the controller ports. I kept dying and getting calls from Colonel, which I ignored/skipped, and beat him in the first port. Took me ages and I didn’t know why it was so difficult…
Only realised how easy the fight was on my second playthrough when I listened to the codec call 🤦🏻♂️
I don't know about the GameCube, but I used Turbo-Mode on my PlayStation controller and Ocelot didn't know shit.
made the comment in another section here that there was a brand of controller that the game did not recognize as being on auto fire. I was skimming thru the internet back when this game had come out and saw on a message board people suggesting to use that one if you were going to cheat that part.
Lmao 🤣
Yeah same thing with me too. I didn't know this was an actual thing until recent years. I used a turbo controller on the GC version as well and didnt have this happen. Maybe it depends on the controller and how fast it does the inputs.
Ocelot won't notice on 3rd party controllers.
Apparently he can’t detect third party ones so he only knows if it’s auto fire with an official controller
I did this on the original ps1 version. No autofire. Survived all 3 rounds.. If only I had known 13 was my peak gaming age.
Shoot I played it first around the same age. Never beat it always got the otaocon ending. I was well into my late teens before I came back and finally survived all three rounds.
mine too.. 18 now and i cant do nearly as many things. may just be a focus on school, though
I gave in at first. Repeatedly smashing the same button seemed bad for the controller, but I think I did get through it all the second playthrough
I’m still cold with it I’m 22
If you were 13 now you could sign a contract with some MLG team and make bank. Born too early. 😭
Metal Gear rocked the non-standard game over trope
Ape Escape 1 too. Should have won game of the year when it was released but didnt due to poor marketing/politics.
@@AndresFnt
Oh yeah. Jumping at the very missile that an attack helicopter fired at you, and somehow load it into your own missile launcher as propellant to shoot down the helicopter. Totally should have won the game of the year.
Yeah you thought the Psycho Mantis boss fight was meta, Ocelot straight-up dared the players to cheese the torture scene.
That feeling when you're just a really decent button masher and are punished for it.
(Yes, it's possible to just mash the button to the point where the game decides you're using autofire.)
You, somehow, managed to trick the game into believing that you were cheating?
@@JexMugen Yep. It's happened to me, too. That's basically how it works on the GC version, and probably the original too. There's no special way / API / protocol-feature that allows the console to interrogate a controller's "auto-fire" state, so it has to be detected/estimated by less accurate means.
Oh that is a major bug
i've heard stories of that, never thought it was actually true.
i was always curious if MGS2 hid this when solidus chokes raiden, but i never wanted to go hunting down controllers just for this.
Touch grass
This is the greatest controller ever made. The NES Advantage. 30 presses per second, more than enough to spam anything that moves.
This comment really deserves more love.
"It costs $400,000 to fire this weapon... for twelve seconds."
I friggin loved all the touches like this, and the reading your memory cards, and the psychic moving controler.
Don't forget about the Colonel telling you to plug your controller in the second controller slot to prevent Psycho Mantis from reading your movements.
Also the Colonel telling you that Meryl's codec frequency is in the back of the video game case.
@@ZyxieRumor That's metal gear solid for you
haha dude, reading memory cards and moving controller was nothing. now, getting arm massage from Naomi was truly *the shit*
"You did it again, Ocelot!"
"Sorry, boss."
*Laugh track*
Everybody Loves Shalashaska will be right back.
That game over screen banter had no reason to be hilarious
Oh you!
Today's Episode has been brought to you by FOXDIE!
The game over screen dialogue was already kinda funny. But now I'm seriously wishing they'd put in a laugh track. Best game over. Ever.
Dude, I might just make this happen 😎
"Unless you're using some weird off-brand controller from Paraguay. They don't pay me enough to detect that crap."
there is a work around. Don't use it all the time. keep short brakes
brakes?
Ocelot: Don't even think about using auto-fire, or I'll know!
Also Ocelot: Has aim-bot and can hit targets by deflecting bullets off other surfaces
"Do as I say, not as I do" literally
he doesn't HAVE aimbot, he IS aimbot
He's the bad guy, he doesn't have to follow the rules!
I remember back in the day, using one of these electric toothbrushes after removing the brush head from its socket and using the vibrating metal rod thing in the handle for button mashing and it worked perfectly 😁
I gotta do that for god of war lol
Ohh wow, i hope the modern toothbrushes work the same way
Ooo I want to try that on the Solidus strangle of doom on extreme difficulty. That shit makes Ocelot's torture look like a walk in the park.
No. you didn't.
@@abigoreternal7537 nothing is real nothing ever happens according to you
Using autofire that registers continual button presses with a random 1-3 frame gap between every press might work.
The game is likely looking for a consistent, mechanically efficient turbo feature, so adding in slight imperfections would make it look more human, from the machine's perspective.
MG games have the best 4th wall breaks
"no full auto in buildings" the prequel
i always wondered what would happen...finally someone uploaded a video of this..thank you!
You did it again Ocelot!!
*Laughter track*
Sorry boss..
*Laughter track and applause*
This game was ahead of its time, switching ports to confuse Mantis to this! Pure genius!
True story: My brother and I build a miniature jackhammer out of a blender and a papierclip to pass this part. Pretty much trashed the controller button, but we did it! =D
"No full autofire in the building"
A man of culture I see.
There was a specific rate of input that came from a specific controller that had turbo that ocelot would recognize (if you wers holding the button before the part where you're supposed to mash starts)
That would cause ocelot to shoot you and call you a cheater.
A good little trick my mate showed me was to get a cigarette lighter and use the side of it to rub back and forth over the button really fast. The rounded sides of the lighter allow it to slide over the button easily and it’s better then mashing. That’s the poor kids rapid fire lol.
This was always one of my favorite lines from the game. Glad to know what actually happens; I thought it was just a joke for the longest time. Considering how the series works, I shouldn't be surprised. (Fun fact, because why not: I've never actually beaten this part, lol. I've only ever surrendered. I'm satisfied with the Otacon ending, though.)
The fact that this line is said by the master of single action army is priceless.
I love this game with it's fourth wall breaks
Best one was the radio frequency on the jewel case. It would be one-upped by Code Veronica having the final code in the game being the name of the game.
Ocelot: sorry boss ☹️
"Don't even think about slamming shut the cylinder, or I'll know..." ~ Revolver Ocelot
The shot changes and he's pointing at a wall.
Liquid: "Are... Who are you talking to, Ocelot?"
"Look my meds for my CBD have some side effects."
0:30 Sorry, Boss (it's you John, not Eli).
I triggered this by accident just button mashing really fast
Imagine if Sonic the Hedgehog played this game and the game THOUGHT he was using autofire.
Ephemer: The Puffball Persona Damn
Suffering from success
I think not BC he was not using the turbo controller? Idk rally cuz I've never used one.
HAHA!! XD Or wait! What if Wile-e-coyote hired Sonic to catch the Roadrunner? :D
@@princenoah21 I could do it better than he could
Ocelot breaks 4th wall....
me and my friend were playing through all MGS chronologically and i’m the section before this with the sniper, it wouldn’t let us save and we said fuck it, whatever. we got to this part and failed it and it deleted our save. we sat in awe staring at the screen then had a mental breakdown, moved to the second game at like 5am and decided to just watch king fu panda 2
cringe :D
He knew.
"Ah crap, how did you know?"
NANI!? He knew about the turbo button?!
He's pretty good
This games is punishment for someone who use cheat
When you enter a 1v1 match
My mad catz controller had 1x, 2x and 3x speed for the auto fire. Can't believed i figured how to use that back then
On the PS1 version, I used a turbo controller for this section and he did not, in fact, know. So for a long time I thought he was just bluffing.
Both MGS torture scene and FFVIII's GF boost taught me how to mash like a god.
Ocelot learned it from TMNT's Raphael and Lizzie Mcguire.
The way how Ocelot points at you makes me think of the old WWE games where the characters waits for you to do something while standing in front of their opponents 😂
This is the first RUclips video I've seen where the description was better than the video
I freaking love the third wall breaks from the MGS games. I totally freaked when I was a kid, first time playing Psycho mantis, put the controller on the floor and everything lol
Fourth wall*
That and psycho-mantis part with controller port. This game was next level clever
I used an autofire pad, and it worked without a single complaint from Captain Mullet there.
The autofire detector was so good it thought my frantic mashing was autofire. And thats why kid me went the non canon ending.
I remember this sequence in so many games back on the GameCube I could never do them myself both of my little brothers had to mash a and b on a single controller at the same time just to pass those sections
Funnily enough I used a turbo controller on this when I was younger and sucked at button mashing and I remember it always working. Not sure if it was something to do with the controller in question but always found it odd that nothing happened out of the ordinary when I used it XD
What are you gonna do old man, twirl you're gun at me?
Fourth wall breaking lol
What if you just programmed a machine to tap circle button more than 1000 times per minute?
Ocelot would still spot it :P. According to my theory of how the detection logic works, at least, and assuming it's the same on the PS version
If you do that your gun will become a line of death and you wont need the box maybe snake could have avoid the torture scene by that
Ahh, classic "wreck your controller" minigame
This game blew my mind with all the random mind fucks in it. Ocelot, Psycho Mantis, the case code... Crazy shit. Lol
On my first playthrough I used autofire. He didn't know. Also, there were continues...
I have a feeling this part would be a bit easier on the Gamecube since it has that big A button as opposed to the PS1's tiny X button.
I forgot what a crazy and intense decision this was for me as an 8 year old
Just finished my first ever playthrough of this game. Reminded me of when me and my brother struggled to mash the b button hard enough for Ninja Storm 2. I had to resort to the spoon method.
My fingers are extremely used to mashing things frantically and it still took me like a million tries to get through this.
Huh. Always wondered what would happen. Apparently, it differs from "turbo fire" since I used that on an emulator and was fine.
Most consoles do not have the ability to report autofire, since autofire or "Turbo" is usually a part of the controllers internal microcontroller
Mantis : let me read your mind
I see you keep dying because you use autofire
First time I ever played MGS2 I had no idea auto-aim existed so I just got really good at quickly aiming
Ha, who needs autofire when you got a mastubator's hand?
I eventually figured out how to beat this. If you tense your elbow up as much as you can until your arm shakes, you can press rapidly enough to withstand the shock.
For those who don’t wanna break their hand (as I did on my first play through) use the spoon tactic
Everybody knows as long as the autofire is not too quick and throws input at random intervals there is no problems.
NO FULL AUTO IN THE BUILDING
Ahh, dear little Ocelot. Where have you gone?
Ocelot: “Don’t even think about using autofire, or I’ll know.”
12 Y.O. Me: “OK NIGGA DAMN.”
Ocelot: The one thing I told you not to do and you done did it.
[uses Autofire]
Ocelot: ...And I Took That Personally
I used to press the button so far the game thought it was on turbo and I died a lot
Hmm, so this is where Button's mom got that quote from. Nice.
What happens if you use the official controller and use the butterfly mashing technique?
"I'll know. My name is Mark, and you can count on it."
Oh hi Mark!
I did used auto fire once on a third party controller, and they never found out. =]
What's autofire? I finished both MGS and TS and i never knew.
It's a feature you can get on some third-party controllers. Enabling it usually results in sustained rapid-fire button presses being sent down the controller wire/link when a button is held down, to assist with button-bashing.
I’m ashamed of the other place I’ve heard this line before
When I was a kid I used to grab a ballpoint pen and rub the end across the button really fast, worked like a charm.
wow, he would know if you even THINK about using it, this man sure hates that autofire
When you have an airsoft rifle that can switch to full auto but the place you're at doesn't allow it
*dies
"sorry boss"
Imagine needing auto fire tho
So he is and isn't lying here. It's based on input speed. If a turbo controller doesn't hit over a certain speed he can't detect crap. If a controller or player can hit over the threshold, your dead. I know because my ps1 turbo never once caught his notice.
Edit: well shoot. Just noticed the description already noted this and worded it better to boot.
The torture in MGS Peace Walker is unforgivable 😭💀
Basically he means “no cheating.”
we need this re-recorded or upscaled to 60 fps 4k/8k
derp
Peace walker and potable ops are pain in the has...nearly impossible on hand...
-That's not even full auto
-No?
-No, this is...
Funny how it's canon Ocelot can break the 4th wall lol
jokes on him. my gamestop controllers autofire was so garbage that he couldnt detect it. never thought id be happy about 1 input per second autofire before.
