Time starts when the calf clears the chute and ends with a valid head catch and the thin string at rope's end is broken from the saddle horn where a small piece of cloth is attached. Ergo, Breakaway Roping.If the horse breaks the barrier, a 5 second penalty is added to the time. Any more I can answer for you?

Yes. All the ropers exit the arena at the opposite end of the arena from the starting point. That is near where the calves exit the arena as well. The ropes are usually already off the calf and either handed to the ladies or hung on a hook for collection if she takes too long to get there. Good question! I usually don't record that action because by that time the next roper is already in the starting box.

Yes, the end of the rope is tied to the saddlehorn along with a small flag. When the rope is played out, the string breaks and the timer stops. That is why this event is called Breakaway Roping.

Why do they let go of the rope??
There are a small flag and a small string attached to the tail-end of the rope. The string is tied to the saddle horn. Once a calf is roped, the rope is allowed to play out until the small string breaks. The clock stops at that moment which is why the sport is called break-away roping.

Maybe the ropes are too short?
A longer rope increases the breakaway time. It is better to stay up with the calf out of the chute so a longer rope isn't needed.

Why don't girls tie down the calf? It's the first time I see women roping calves and I thought they were all messing up. (I'm not American)
It is a relatively new competition that is growing fast in popularity. An alternative to barrel racing where the cowgirls skills are more important than her horse. Less stressful on the cattle and the girls don't have to lift 200+ pound calves and risk injury from kicking hooves, and of course their fancy boots and jeans don't get dirty. Ha! 😏

Some of these girls don't even no how to handle there horses mouth with care I can see a lot of the horses mouths are inflamed because they are constantly pulling them hard to where the horses can't even relax there heads shame on them and not one of them even no how to rope a cow so why are they doing it they can't rope one because there horses aren't relax neither are they
How useless is that. Break away calf roping are you serious. Just goes to show you if calf roping was easy, women would be doing it. Its kinda like saying you played nine holes of golf an never left the driving rang. Or driving a tractor back and forth from one end of the field to the other all day and never dropping the plow. you don't get any ground plowed . Believe me I know first hand. Same thing goes with breakaway calf roping you anit gona get any calves branded, doctored castrated, separated or what ever a skilled COWBOY can do with his rope.
These are high school girls. I would bet that some will go on to team roping, if not already. I have been recording a lot of teams lately with female headers.
