This version by Grail Games (Australia) is , to echo your words Zee....Spectacular. I own this copy and it hits the table fairly often. It's sooo gorgeous to use. Look out for the Card game by Grail as well.
I played the app but never a physical copy, but I still consider this to be one of my favourite auction games. It's so simple, but as the game progresses you need to take a lot into consideration, and I find myself adopting one of many strategies depending on the situation. I'll definitely be picking up a copy when I see it.
I find that this is a great game to open a game night. It's light-ish, and very straightforward. You are not front loaded with a zillion rules like most modern Eurogames. The issue about its fragility is pretty much part and parcel of every auction game out there.
I did enjoy my one play of this, and I have the app on iOS that I've played a few times. I guess I must be old-school, since I would definitely like to play it again.

As to the attractiveness and functionality of this version, the scoring track is far more functional on this one but I much prefer the art on my old "ugly box" edition and would not do a straight up swap for the new version at all.
Too repetitive, really? What about games like Pandemic? Medici isn't an all-time favorite of mine, but I'm surprised that you didn't mention the fact that this game is one of the few (only?) auction games out there that accommodates players of all skill levels really well. New players who don't know what to bid will be able to hold their own, as well as those who have played the game many, many times.
I feel the new player messing the game up is also present in Ra. If someone is not calling out auctions at the right time or not bidding at times they need to or vice versa they can mess the game up. Maybe the simplicity of Knizia auctions games cause this or maybe I feel that way about it.
I feel like it's worse in Ra because of the push-your-luck aspect. In Ra, if the lot is useful to you and you have the highest Sun, I'll call Ra so it doesn't get bigger. Newbies don't get that, which can really help some players when they make an attractive lot even more attractive.
Yes. He is saying it wrong. But last time I wronte a comment about his italian pronounce he didn't like the critic. So....it's not perfect but lots better of common americans! :)
It is great with 6 players which is a hard player count to find good games for.
Yeah, I agree, 6 player game is fantastic. The higher number the better in this one. IMO.

Like the card game Zee is really underselling how good this game is.

Yeah usually bidding games are more complex because reasons.

I was looking into getting the new edition of Ra also. Ignoring price, which one is the better (more fun) game: Ra or Medici?
TheMrE Medici is less expensive and the art/components are amazing! I love my copy, and I've yet to buy Ra due to the price :)
Ra by far. Medici is better if you play with new players more often, but Ra has a deeper experience.
I like them equally but Ra is best with 3 or 4 and Medici is best with 5 or 6.
Both fantastic games, seeing that this is now 4 years old, I trust you got them both by now.
my gaming group really likes this one. for some reason I don't win in this game.
My group has played the several times now but I suck at it and I really don't enjoy playing it whatsoever
