I have only been gaming for four years, but I am already starting to really crave the types of experiences you talk about when you describe these older gems. I really appreciate this channel's focus, thank you.
Great! That's one of the goals of this channel: To highlight to people who might not be as familiar with older games that they're a different style, and that style might just be their cup of tea.
and in the Uk a new version of Medici has just come out. It looks like a nice production so anyone still looking should find it easier to pick this up now.
This definitely feels like the perfect pure auction game. It’s got just enough systems to make the auctions interesting without distracting from the interaction. I’m glad I got a chance to play this one online!
Not being in any way knowledgeable in languages, I always thought this game was about doctors and medicine (oops!😊). However, now I've seen you explain and talk about it, and suddenly I realise it's a game I'd really like! It's a pity the Grail version is going to be hard to get, because it looks fantastic. The only query I have, and I might have missed it, how is the player who deals the cards selected? It seems the dealer has an advantage in the auctions, knowing what everyone else has bid, so if it's just 'pass the role to the player on your left' for three rounds, some of the players wouldn't get the opportunity to deal. Superb video mate, so good in fact, you've just got yourself a new subscriber!
I've got the Grail Games version but I've never played Medici yet. We're visiting some friends soon and they're smart and cunning. Ideal time to break out this game I think.
I just recently developed a bloodthirsty desire for the grail games version of Medici..I know it’s being reprinted in a month or so but I like this older look to the board with Vincent dutrait, but tracking one down for decent price is tough
The Grail version is gorgeous. Pleasing to the eye & very simple to differentiate the goods. For some reason, I acquired 2 copies of it. I cannot recall how or why that occurred, but at least I have an extra copy in case I ever need it………perhaps I forgot to check my “inventory” before I ordered.
I have this, as well as the dice game. TDG is a prettyy good R&W, more interactive than most, but not very good with two players like most R&Ws are. Haven’t tried TCG yet, am curious about it.
Thanks for the great video. I'm happy that I snagged the Grail Games edition while it was still available. I haven't played the second edition but I assume there is more risk of accidentally seeing which goods are being removed when using tiles in lieu of cards. Did you experience that? I do agree that passing around a bag of tiles a la Ra feels right for the luck of the draw.
I grab the tiles out of the bag and chuck them into the box lid. Hasn’t been much of a problem, but I admit there’s risk there compared to cards. I actually wouldn’t mind cards if we didn’t have to pass them around. A space in the middle of the board that everyone could reach would be enough for me. But I don’t think I’ve seen a version that had a dedicated central space for the deck. (You could do it with the French Lui-Même edition, though it wasn’t intended.)
What are your thoughts on Lost Cities: Rivals? The Lost Cities, Hollywood Golden Age and Ra mix is great and one of my favorites. Hoping for a Rivals 2 that blends Medici, Modern Art and High Society.
I have it, sadly in my unplayed list. I actually have it in a _box_, because my request list is so long and those games I should prioritize. But I like everything I've read about it - including what you just wrote. 🙂
Haven't seen it in person. The board looks very similar to Grail's. The cards might seem plain to some but the different colours will stand out from each other. The only thing that gives me pause is that the cards look quite different from the matching track on the board. Like there's a brown card, and that's supposed to match the "yellow and some red" track, I guess?
Thanks again for your job. It's strange because my german Amigo version only have two rewards for monopoly (+20 and +10). Maybe the change is important...
It’s true, both the original Amigo and the later French Lui-Même editions are missing the +5. I don’t know the reason for the change, but I do the think it’s better with the +5.
I noticed you tend to have a lot of versions of the same game. Is that a collectors mentality thing? I have been thinking about that a lot recently as I am starting to see more new editions of games that I already own and I am always torn about what to do about that. Part of me wants the new editions because they usually tend to have upgraded art/components/rules, but then another part of me still likes the older editions, especially if they remain superior to the new ones. I still feel weird about keeping more than one copy of the same game, but I can see myself starting to do that very soon.
For my personal collection, I don't usually need more than one copy. Exceptions are games like Ave Caesar that has different tracks in different editions, and as you said when the collector's gland kicks in. For example, I have two editions of Habitats and Basketboss because I collect both Cwali and Allplay games in a certain box size. Keep in mind I have two board gaming restaurants, so I will also sometimes get multiple copies, get a feel for which one I like more, than put the other in the restaurant where it can get beat up. 🙂 I used to care more about having the "best" edition. Not anymore. Today that usually translates to "edition with the most extra stuff", and I find most of that extra stuff to be unnecessary. (I'm not much of an expansion guy.) And I don't mind the look of old editions. Usually when a game becomes classic in people's minds under a certain look and ruleset, I'm not tempted by new editions with updated looks and revised rules. The old ones became classics looking and playing like that, and that's good enough for me.
Dangit, you’ve convinced me this is a must have, and I can already picture it with my game group. Ra just had a deluxification (I was happy to find the version that matched the geekup bits and am very happy) do we think this game might be re issued? Or does anyone have a connection? I really want to get this. Regards!
It will definitely be reissued… someday. But I wouldn’t expect it soon since the Grail printing was not that long ago. A used copy is the way to go if you think you need it ASAP. Otherwise, enjoy Ra until a reprint. 🙂 Lots of games to enjoy in the meantime!
Also: How does this channel not have 100,000 subscribers? It's excellent.
At least partly because I am terrible at self-promotion. 🫤 Thanks for the kind words!

Absolute gem! Love this game to bits. Great choice and your channel overall is just full of excellent content-- keep it up!
Very good explained and very smart, your absolutely right.
To your "is it a gem?" discussion I say "amen, brother!" Fantastic game - a gem, indeed.

If you still have an extra copy and are in the US, could I buy it from you?
My group prefers the card game version, which is a press-your-luck fest. It's great fun but doesn't require such specific evaluation.

Just played this and you come out with the video! I’m really curious to hear your thoughts.
Medici is probably my favorite 6p game

Oh, You are missing the latest version, which people claim it offers the best production 😳
It didn't exist when this video was made. 😁
@@BoardGems don't worry about it. If you prefer tiles over cards then you still own the best edition 😉
What do you think of the new edition coming out?

@@BoardGems you mentioned you might sell a copy?😁
Heh, yeah. My Grail Games edition. But unless you're in Canada, and honestly even if you are, shipping is really expensive...
@@BoardGems I'm in Lower Lonsdale. Say the word.
Oh, ha ha! Okay, send me a DM on BGG or Twitter (both booned) and we'll go from there.
