Thank you for this! I’m a big fan since the early days. I’ve introduced it to my friends and they all love it. It’s become a legitmate weekend event 😊 I also almost own all the tracks, missing Tracks 27-35. If anyone wants to sell a good condition let me know 😅 I have a question regarding the slipstream rules: does it count in the curves aswell (starting 4 gear)?

Instead of using up 27 minutes, about 3 would have sufficed to say that this game is heavily luck dependent, (and that's the way you prefer it) and drags at the end, as your own play through unmercifully indicates.... As you correctly state, the 3 player version isn't good and the 4 player version is merely 2 against 2 which can also be done in any 2 player abstract. It's hard to see what makes this a "gem"?? Yes, the box is nice, and a 7 or 8 year old can play it with a grand parent or better yet great grand parent:-)

I love this game. This may be the crunchiest pick up and deliver I have played. One of my favorite Uwe games.

Spirits works very well with more than 2. So in that regard a good adaptation of the original. Don't like the generic theme, but it looks really nice.

When I started buying more games. back in 2009 or so, there was an extremely popular Print & play file because it was a great game and it just needed some cards and a few tokens, it was a versión of Richelieu for 2-4 players. I remember that I played this a lot, specially since it was really portable and I could take it on travels or vacations. Years latter when I was buying a bunch of games from a German seller I was morally obligated to buy a copy of Richelieu it has for sale. I'm not a collector, and I don't play it anymore, but I'm keeping my copy of richelieu just for the good memories. Also this was the first game that I remember explaining to my group that it was obviously an abstract with a pasted on theme. Still to this day in my gaming group when we want to say that a game has a pasted on theme we use the euphemism: "This game is about political control of France" XD

Other than the big dice, I don’t think that there’s really anything that’s important to have from Boulevard or Royale - and its easy enough to add in things like kickers, chips, slot machine for an optional extra if you’ve got some spare dice or poker chips to hand. Am not a fan of the Royale mini games, or the production quality.

Hiya, great video, thanks! I just got the newer version by Dicetree. How many races do you normally play in 1 session? How long does 1 race normally take? I guess playing multiple races smooths out the luck, but does the game drag with the 4-race session (as per rulebook)? Regards, Salman

Hey man, thanks for the great review! :) I am also into vintage board games and just wanted to let you know that as soon as I first saw this video, I became so intrigued by this game that I immediately started looking for a copy. I finally managed to get hold of a second-hand copy in almost mint condition, and for pretty cheap (about 17 euros)... I am really looking forward to trying out this game with friends soon! The mechanics look simple but smart!

Bunny Kingdom immediately comes to mind when you explained this game. You’re using a crossing grid system on a map, putting pieces out. You can put more pieces that are adjacent to the previous pieces which gives you bonuses then you can chain some adjacent spaces Together, etc. I was a hairs width away from purchasing Oregon for $57 on eBay and then I thought to myself upon watching your video again that bunny kingdom is by far the superior game. Although I would still like to have Oregon because I love the simplicity and the old school nature of the theme, etc. One might say bunny kingdom has more going on and it does but, my 78 year-old mom and my sister, and my nephew who never plays games all loved Bunny Kingdom and understood it right away. The thing is is once your shelves get so full and space is limited. You have to ask yourself, Do I have a game that does a similar thing and does it do it a little better and I think in this case bunny kingdom does that. Thanks for your videos they are invaluable. The thing that separates you from other channels is your in-depth analysis and the bits of history of the games you cover. I love it thanks.

Heat supplanted this for me. Counting spaces really slowed it down.

I have the old Pinguin Deluxe version from Phalanx Games, nice big mini's and tiles... I love to play the board freestyle... Then the digital version in fact is also nice 🐧🐧🐧🙂 nice idea to make this video 👌

Great overview; I do not know if you played Zombiegeddon. It resembles of Hey, That's My Fish! but heavier. Zombiegeddon is a real hidden gem because barely anyone played or talked about, it is an amazing game top 5 of Knizia for me. Then; they reprint as Jäger und Sammler which is easier and less punitive but looker version of it.

The edition with the best looking penguins is missing. Hey! That's My Fish! Deluxe ‐ Mayfair English edition from 2008 🙂 I got that one, but I will buy the new edition too. I like the grids.

I had the Fantasy Flight version but upgraded to the new Next Move edition. I liked how small and portable the Fantasy Flight version was. But I play the game significantly more often now with the new edition. The board makes it so much faster to set up the game and easier to pick up tiles during play. That added convenience and ease of play really has made this great game go from being played once in a while to being one of my most played games. So well done to Next Move on that one! I hadn't seen the original version before, though! Those meeples are great.

In "Pioneers" there is a Carriage under shared control of the players similar to the Ship in Hansa. Really like the mechanism there :)

Thanks for the great review. I am a huge fan of the game. It is currently in ALPHA mode on BoardGameArena (BGA). There is a community playing a championship already and I can tell you the implementation is amazing, it is a lot of fun, and it is in my view totally ready for BETA, which would make it publicly available. The BGA implementation has the "turbo" option which allows players - once per round - to move an additional number of spaces equal to the gear they are in. This attenuates the risk that you stop right in front of a corner in a very high to some extent.

You should test "Thunder Alley" and "Grand Prix" really fun racing games. IMHO both are better then "Formula De" and "Heat"

It looks like Chariots of Rome is out of print and the second printing Kick Starter did not fund ☹

Extra dice sets are mandatory to speed up play, so that everyone has dice within reach. I also like to allow shifting at the end of your turn, so that you're ready to roll quickly again. Three lap races are where the game shines to me, and I agree with playing two cars per player at lower player counts. I still love Formula D!

Nice to watch a complete review of formula D! I agree with your opinions... If you like dice rolling, realistic tracks and accept a bit randomness, or house rule somewhat, it's the ideal F1 game... Heat looks great, but I totally agree with you about the poor, non realistic design of the tracks... It keeps me away of playing it... Missed opportunity indeed! I collected all tracks of Formula D, the only one I don't own is Bahrain&Shangai... You say they'll introduce the game on BGA? With all tracks? That would be fantastic 🙏

The name of the game is also a play on words: the German for a trick-taking game is a Stichspiel. (Trick = Stich)

An interesting comparison. It’s unusual for a game to come out with a ‘deluxe’ version first and a ‘standard’ version later. As much as I get the toy box factor, it seems way too much. If I had a copy I would be unlikely to haul it to games night, and it would have to be damn good to justify taking up so much room on my shelves. Foundations of Metropolis seems like a better balance, even if the original Roman setting is more interesting to me. More practical, and still a high quality production by my standards.

Would love to see a review now!

I wish they kept the Roman theme for the cardboard version :(
