In this episode of In the Kitchen with Matt, I will show you how to eat the Rambutan fruit. What does a rambutan taste like? I will answer that question with a taste test. It has been over 20 years since I last ate rambutan. It was my second favorite fruit behind the mango when I was living in the Philippines. They are quite interesting looking red with hair-like spindles all over them, kind of like a sweet gum ball tree here in the United States or also kind of like a sea urchin. Rambutans are very tasty, sweet, with a thick flesh that covers a seed. It is watery and is kind of like a grape if the grape was bigger a surrounding a pit. They are definitely worth trying!
Where does rambutan come from?
They come from South East Asia and are native to the Indonesian Archipelago. They are cultivated all over the world in the tropics, like Africa, the Philippines, Costa Rica, etc. You can eat them fresh or use them in jams and jellies. They are typically red but also come in green and yellow varieties.
What are the health benefits of the rambutan fruit?
They are rich in antioxidants.
Hich in Vitamin C
Promote healthy digestion
Low in calories
Rich in fiber

Yep it's delicious I'm 52 years old and it's the first time I see this fruit. I guess I'm still discovering life wonders It's amazing this planet we live in
So many fruits to taste and so little time, haha. :)
And i think i am late cuz I haven't eaten one in 13 years
All created by our Lord and our God, he loves you brother!
I'm 35 and just tried my first don't give up guys/gals 🤣
It looks like something that would grow on an alien planet or something from a game like Ark Survival Evolved 😂
In malay language or indonesian language, rambut which is mean hair, and utan or hutan is jungle. This fruits is sweet and i really love it. Thank you for sharing this video, i really enjoying it. 😁👍🏼
You are welcome! Yes it is such an amazing fruit.
Rambutan is more like saying ‘hairy-thingy’ rather than a combo of rambut and hutan. Same goes for ‘durian’ = thorny-thingy.
I'm here because I just found these at my local 99c store and wanted to know how to eat them, thanku for the video.
You are welcome, Crystal!! That is awesome, how many did you get for 99c? Just one for a few for that price?
@@inthekitchenwithmatt there where about 4-5 pieces in each pkg, I'll go back tomorrow and get some, I think I'll use them when juicing or making smoothies, thx a bunch!
damn thats expensive
@@dhanajon5528 yeah it’s because it’s an exotic fruit, like the dragon fruit they are super expensive but definitely worth it!!
@@BBL_Inc but its not an exotic fruit... Well not where i live at least. Super cheap and theres an abundant supply of them. Same for the dragon fruit
My very good friend had these on offer at a birthday party a couple of years ago. I live in a pretty diverse area, so these are easy to find whether in Asian markets, specialty markets, or even in some of our big box grocery stores. He called them Dragon's eyes, and true to that name, if you just split them straight through with the pit, they do in fact kind of look like what you imagine a dragon's eye to look like. I just finished introducing these to my parents who enjoyed them. Such is the beauty of food to be able to share your experiences with others, and have them pass that experience on to others.
Nice!! Yes, it is awesome to be able to share food experiences with others.
Had my 1st Rambutan at the age of 77. It was very tasty.
@@verataylor8295 awesome!
Just bought these today for my son and I to try. Super excited! Thank you for this video. Simple, to the point and easy to follow along (great when you’re trying new things).
That is awesome!! I am excited for you to try them, let me know what you think. :) And you are very welcome!
Bought this at Costco. Didn’t use any tool (ie. Knife). Just used my fingers to open the shell and to poke the fruit out. It tastes like lychee, but sourer 🌞
Yes there are many ways to eat them. Some people even just bit them. They are in the same family as lychee.
Mine wasn’t sour it tasted like a exactly like a grape and I bought it at Costco Sheffield
Yeah I call it lychee for real
Sour means it is raw
I believe I tried one several years ago while working with a lady from the Philippines. I remember liking it but just forgot about getting some for myself. I am retired now and was in Costco today and bought a carton. I didn't remember how to eat one so thank you for this video. Looking forward now to eating them.
That is awesome, Betty! Cool that they had them in Costco too. I only ever see them at my local Asian market.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt They had them at my HEB Alon Market in San Antonio.....very good.
Thanks for showing us how to "peel" and eat this fruit. Got some at my local Trader Joe's, and excited to try it now thanks to your video! :)
You are very welcome, Christy! People also just bite it to break it open or squeeze it with their fingers. But I prefer using the knife, haha.
I love RUclips..thanks Matt, I rcvd a package of these from my neighbor and I didnt want to stand there asking 20 questions...you covered them all! Thanks
You are so very welcome, Tasha!! :)
I need your neighbor to send me a package. I'm in Virginia. Will pay for shipping
Noticed these at Safeway! Expensive, at 2 fruit for a dollar. However, I couldn't resist trying a new food, so I bought a couple! Then I came here and tried it while watching your video. It is like a slightly sweeter, huge green grape! I could see cocktails being super tasty with this fruit, especially with citrus or mint.
Yes that is expensive!! You should be able to find them much cheaper at an Asian Market. :) :) That is if you have one fairly close.
Omg thats very expensive lol
I was in Costa Rica they are 2 kilos for $2 !
I went to a and a asian market and a whole bag was 3 dollars
in indonesia, for 1 buck or 2 you could have a branch of it, rambutan kinda cheap here. even you can get free have rambutan if there's a tree of it. i remember getting yelled by my teacher when i took and ate rambutan from the tree at my school lol
I've never had a rambutan but I really wanna try them! They remind me of lychees, which are actually one of my favorite fruits!
They are in the same family of fruits. So if you like lychees you will probably like Rambutan. I love them both!
I just tried some for the first time ever. It taste EXACTLY like a sweet coconut. Delicious like crazy
There in Walmart now
Cool video, I'm doing a project on these guys and enjoyed watching your experience. Thanks for showing us how it's done!
Thank you and you are welcome!!
Hi Matt,
My husband said that a Vietnamese gal at work brought a bunch in for everyone to try a while ago. While watching your video he remembered & said that these are really good. Thanks for the education on fruits around the world. You always have fun & informative videos. 😊
That is awesome! You are so very welcome! :) :) And thank you so much. :)
I live in Hanoi Vietnam. At this time of year the rambutan are all over the fruit stores and street vendors. Fruit in Southeast Asia is always good. Next up I hope we get mangosteens. Fun to eat and interesting looking as well. I just bought some from a fruit stand today and sat outside eating them. Really don’t need a knife. You can get to the wonderful sweet inside with hands.
That is awesome! I have yet to find mangosteens in all the places I go. At some point I will need to do a special online order for them. It definitely depends on the rambutan, the harder ones, are not has easy to break open with your fingers.
I really enjoyed this video. I loved all ur descriptions of the texture, flavor and how to eat it properly. Now don't mind me as I go binge watch all ur other videos. Thanks again for all the great information!!
Thank you!! And you are so very welcome :)
I had my first rambutan yesterday (age 71) when a friend bought a pack and shared it. She gave me most of the pack, so I had more for breakfast and found your video while eating. I pried my first 2 open with my fingernails; your method is much easier. Thanks.
Glad you got to try them!! Yeah a common method is to just crack it with your hands and peel it open, but the knife is easier in my opinion. You are very welcome!
Yes I had them at a Halloween party about 10 years ago. I didn't know what they were called, but recently found them at a fresh market in Kansas City, Missouri. I have been looking for them for a long time, you always remember that taste.
Awesome!! Great idea for a Halloween party as well.
just had rambutan for the first time today! we cut it in half and the kids and I were shocked at how much it looked like an eyeball! so cool & it was very delicious. Thanks for your video ;)
That is so cool, Annette! :) You are very welcome. :)
Thank you for sharing I just got these as a gift and your video helped a lot
You are welcome! Glad the video was helpful :)
My father is a USAF vet. We used to get these at the BX in England. I have had one in years but I love them so much.
That is awesome! If you want to find them, try the nearest Asian/International market to where you live now, if there is one. They will probably have them when it is the season. And thanks to your father for serving!
just bought one as this years mystery fruit for thanksgiving!!
Awesome!!
I just bought some at my local Walmart. I've never seen these before. I googled it and decided to be adventurous and give them a try. I like them! On first taste, they're not overly sweet, they do remind me of a firmer grape texture. I would definitely buy them again 😁
Awesome! So glad you gave them a try.
I happen to see these at a Hispanic store, because I didn't know much about them I passed, now after watching your video I'm definitely buying. Thanks for sharing!!
Awesome! Yes definitely give them a try sometime and see if you like them. So yummy!
I just picked some up at the store and I love them!!!! So yummy and flavorful!
Awesome! Glad you tried them and liked them!
I just bought some yesterday. They are good. It reminds me of a green grape. It tastes like it too
Glad you tried them!
Just bought some of these last night to try. Thx for this!!
Awesome! You are welcome! :)
Just bought and ate my first rambutan. They are fantastic!
Glad you tried them out and liked them!
just brought these today can’t wait to try them !
Awesome!!
I went to my Asian supermarket today to do some grocery shopping and I seen these beauties always wanted to try them I guess today is the day thank you so much for showing us how to eat this beautiful fruit✓
That is awesome, Alex! I am glad you were able to give them a try. :)
I didn't know how to eat this....thank you for teaching me!
Yum!
You are very welcome!!
Just tried it for the first time! I must say that I like it! Very sweet!
Glad you tried it and liked it! :)
Never heard of these before but saw them at a grocery store yesterday and wanted to try it. Probably my new favorite fruit. It reminds me of a quenepa, you eat those the same way too.
Awesome!
Thank you, I too discovered the fruit on my first Asia trip and loved it. Still do. Trying to entice my friends into trying it and they are joking about its look! One thing is you are the first person I see use a knife. I always see and I do same, people squeeze it break the thick peel off skin then pull it off and enjoy the fruit. Thanks again, nice video!
You are welcome!! Yeah when I was in the Philippines that is how we ate it, by squeezing it with our hands. However a lot of times they can be hard and people with weaker hands have a hard time squeezing it until it cracks. I have noticed that the imported fruit we get here seems to be harder than when I was in the Philippines. But still able to open it with your hands. A knife is so much easier for people with weaker hands though.
Wow! Wow! That is too cool. I can't say i will get to try this but clicked because it's so unique and at least i'll know how if i ever get the opportunity lol
lol cool!! :) :) Glad you watched it anyway. :)
Massive thank you Matt,I'm from Vietnam, My house grows a lot of rambutan,so glad when to see your video❤
You are so very welcome! :) That is awesome!
I just bought some thanks Matt! I was scared at first from the outer appearance but it’s just a big grape
You are welcome! Glad you tried it!
Yum! First timer. Thanks for the help!
You are very welcome! :)
I'm trying this this for the first time, thanks for your video I did not know how to eat the fruit
Awesome! And you are welcome. You can also try just pinching it firmly in your hand until it cracks then open it without using a knife. That is how I originally used to eat them and is a common method. Sometimes they are kind of hard to open that way though.
I just bought my 1st one. I had never heard of them before. Sounds yummy. P.S. I'm 75.
Awesome! Glad you are trying it for the first time!
Costco had rabutan last week,I've been enjoying them all week! Like sweet, creamy grapes with no acidity.
Awesome! Yeah I have noticed them popping up in normal stores other than the International market where I normally buy them. Seems like they are getting a bit more popular in the States.
I'm trying it for the first time. Thanks for sharing.
You are welcome! Let me know if you like them or not.
I just have tried these and LOVED THEM!! they tasted like a Sweeter version of a Grape.
Glad you tried them and liked them! Such an amazing little fruit.
I believe I bought them one time cause I wanted to see what they were like. But I always try new and different thing's. But I love it when I come across healthy thing's.
Awesome, Patricia! :)
Thanks for the demo. Was given the fruit, but nothing else. So now I'm excited to try it, instead of what the heck I'm to do with this!
You are very welcome! Another method I didn't show on how to open it is to squeeze and pinch it with your fingers and it will crack open, but sometimes they are too hard for that. But that is a very common method as well. Let me know what you think once you try it!
I'm 61, and this is the first time I'm eating this fruit. I did find them at my local HEB. They taste more like Lychee but not as strong a flavor. I will buy these again
Hello! Yes they are in the same family as the Lychee and Longan.
I just found these at my local supermarket in the southeastern US and it looked interesting enough to buy and try. I ate a few and came on RUclips to see if my opinion matched with others.... and yes. The closest thing I can compare them to are really sweet white grapes. Both taste and texture. A little pricey at at over $4 a pound, but worth it to try a new flavor.
Awesome! Glad you were able to find them and give them a try. :)
I also just found them last week, in New Orleans area! They were on sale actually, so I could not resist picking them up. Thanks to this video, I was able to open them so my lovely daughter and I could try them. Pretty good!
@@cheripalmisano1560 Glad you were able to find them and give them a try. :)
I bought a box of rambutans at my local Stop & Shop in Orleans, Ma. today! I knew I could find someone on line to show me how to eat them. Thanks!
That is awesome! You are wecome!
First time got them at Costco today I actually love the taste thanks for video
That is awesome! Glad you were able to find them. You are welcome!
Hi matt that's one of my favourite fruit I have rambutan trees at my backyard in the Philippines it's so juicy and sweets
So very cool, Adelita! :) :) So lucky you have them in your backyard!

I going too definitely try them!
Awesome, Dee Dee, let me know how you like them!
I will try it now.

In Philippines it is really common. But overall it is so good! Or as we filipinos like to say it.. "Masarap!"
Indeed! That is where I first had these. I lived in the Philippines for a couple of years, quite awhile ago.
Thanks, Matt. I picked up some from my Costco. Thankfully, I live near a Costco with a diverse Asian community. So via Costco, I was introduced to Jack fruit and fish skins.
You are welcome! You are the second person that I heard found these at Costco. I haven't seen them at my Costco. So I always have to go to my local Asian market to find them, which I don't mind going to, because there is so much good stuff there that they don't have at my supermarket.
Hi, Matt. That's true, all Costco's don't carry certain items. They tend to cater to the community. So if you go to a Costco in a large Asian community, you may find products from Asia. My Costco has a lot of products from China. About a year ago, I started seeing more products from Japan.
@@awhites8061 Awesome! I recently just saw Rambutan in my local normal supermarket. They have a little section where they sell more exotic fruits, and they are finally starting to branch out even more with the fruit.
I saw theses at the Mexican food store, I'm gonna try them out. Thanks for the video.
Awesome! Let me know if you like them after trying them. And you are welcome!
Me and my dad went to this asian market and saw 5 people getting tons of these so we decided to get 3 of them to try it out, tasted it and its very tasty! That says a lot because im picky for exotic things. Great video!
Awesome! Glad you gave them a try. And thank you! :)
@@inthekitchenwithmatt wow your method was so much easier, online it told me to slice the skin off, but cutting it down the middle was so effective, ill definitely buy a lot like the other people next time I'm there
@@prototypenick8373 Another thing you can try is pinching it hard it will crack and you can open it. No need for a knife, that is a common way to open it. Other people crack it with their teeth, haha. I like the pinching method and the knife method.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt hey one more question which rambutans are the best ones to get? I saw people going through the pile to find certain ones.
@@prototypenick8373 Get the ones that don't have any brown on them. :)
An Asian here that lives in Malaysia you can get this anywhere and I eat it almost everyday now lol, it's really really delicious, one of my favourite fruit I grow up eating it.
Yeah I eat it a lot when I lived in the Philippines, so good!
I just tried the rambutan fruit. It is sweet and tasty. Yum!

I grew up in the Philippines and often ate rambutan when I was young! I haven't had them since moving to Canada a decade ago :(

I saw them at Trader's Joe but was unsure how to eat one. Thanks for the explanation.
You are welcome! I didn't show the common way of just breaking them open with your hands, because sometimes they are a little hard, but most people in the Southeastern Asian countries open them that way.
Just tried them and they are great.
Glad you got to try them and liked them! :)
I just bought a whole flat of rambutan at my local Asian market and I ate them all in two days. To me it takes like a vanilla grape. It is tied with the mango for my favorite fruit.

Been eating rambutans for years, but i still watched your video to see if I missed out any information on how to eat it. Luckily, I didn’t. 😀 Been breaking the outer side of the fruit using my fingers only since i first started eating this while i was still a kid. But this week, i decided to start using a knife. I didn’t know why I haven’t thought of doing that before. 😂 I was enjoying eating rambutans while watching your video. ☺️
Awesome! Glad you have tried them before and like them and still watched my video :). Yeah, breaking them apart with your fingers is easy enough as well depending on how hard they are, but that is definitely a common method.
Juicy n sweet, one of many yummy fruits from Malaysia🤤🤤.
Yes so yummy!
I just started seeing them at my local market. I bought two small ones, $3.99 per pounds, about 23 cents a piece for these two small ones. Good, interesting, but not as sweet as I expected. Could be due to shipping from Asia to San Antonio Texas. But I enjoy tasting new things also, especially fruits and veggies. Last year I tried Fresh Jack Fruit for the first time.....love it fresh....yes tastes like juicy fruit chewing gum. I haven't tried cooking it yet. When our market first started selling it, they had the giant jack fruit cut into smaller portions for those of us living alone and I enjoyed it every time I could get a smaller portion. Now, they only sell the full giant ones and way to much for me to handle or to eat. I just found your video by searching rambutan......I am looking forward to to seeing more of your videos. :-) Thanks for sharing your info with us. :-)
After reading some of the comments......I am 75 now and this is the first I have tasted a rambutan. Gonna buy some more next shopping trip. :-)
That is awesome! And you are welcome!
Glad you got to taste them and liked them!
I've had these before! They're so good, but another way to eat them is to first, find a little crease, or line. Kinda like a peach, and you can cut a little bit on the line till you get through the skin. Then you can just pop it open!
Awesome! Yeah I ate them all the time in the Philippines when I lived there back in the late 1990s. Most people there just open them with their hands, but sometimes they can be difficult to open that way.
