Old Edwards Fire Alarm Test.

  • Testing the fire alarm before disconnecting it for good. The old system was put in back when the building was built in the early 60s. No panel. Just pulls wired to horns on a 3 wire circuit. When the new system was installed in 2009, the installer did not remove the old system. So I am inspecting the new one and for it to pass, the old has to come out. Only 3 horns in the entire building and it was loud enough to be heard. The new system has 31 horns and it's not as loud.

    These Edwards adaptahorns are some of the LOUDEST alarms I even know of along with the Simplex 4030 and the Autocall AC horns. I’ve heard an Edwards adaptahorn in person and it was no joke. Image school fire drills with these alarms! 😂

    this system was a 110volt ac system. no control panel. just switches that triggered horns. so.if power failed, no alarm. if a wire broke, no indication. it worked for what it was intended for but it needed updated. The older mechanical horns, AC or DC, usually produced a lower frequency which carried alot further than the newer higher pitched horns. something vibrating doesnt just create Soundwaves at the horn but it also transfers to the solid wall they are mounted to. so, mechanical horns are more effective. The reason they stopped making mechanical horns and went to electronic horns was because of no moving parts.

    • @ZakWolf
      @ZakWolf 5 лет назад +1

      Oh yes. And consequently, new fire alarms are not as loud as old ones; not even the loudest electronic horns like the Wheelock AS, System Sensor SpectrAlert Advance and Simplex TrueAlert can compete with those old electromechanical horns!

    I had the exact same system at my elementary school, and they too still worked then. Since I'm out of school now and it's been ages since I've seen that system, I'm hoping big time those alarms are still in service.
    Edit: The schools in the district, including my elementary school, are in the process of being torn down and rebuilt. I got in contact with the administrator of the schools in the district, and he told me that the fire alarms are still in use here in 2023. I was surprised that they were still active honestly. but what I asked was when the building is about to get torn down, I could have the Edwards Adaptahorns, and the 270 spos, and when he said that they were still active, he said that they will look into it when the building closes. It sounds quite promising, and I'm looking forward to it.

    • @SirensAndAlarmsOfNorthernIL
      @SirensAndAlarmsOfNorthernIL 2 года назад +2

      The old one however doesn’t have battery backup. I would say it is kind of better as usually fires rarely happen during power outages so battery backup for fire alarms isn’t that important but it is required due to new codes. The old one is probably cheaper and obviously louder. Those 3 horns can easily do the job of 31

    When I lived in Michigan my ninth 10th and 11th grade year, the high school there had the old alarm like that as well, when I moved to New Mexico to start my senior year there they had an upgrade with those red ones, but they were the ones before the strobe lights but then, of course, the alarms in the hall would go off, and you would hear short tones through the PA system intercom. But these alarms hear I remember went off during choir practice and a couple of times in the gym and one time in the gym locker room when we were changing our clothes to get ready for class right after the tardy bell rang. Those were the days.

    Unlike the "upgraded" alarm system, *this* actually sounds like a real urgent emergency. Too bad the old "Edwards Fire Horns" are gone. Only 3 horns and it could be heard loud and clear, and like I said, those Edwards Fire Horns sound more like a "real urgent emergency" than the newer alarm system with the Gentex Commanders.

    Thought i should share history on my school. My school was built in 1965 and originally has quite a few simplex 4037s and one 4032. Around 10 years later their was an addition that added 4 adaptahorns and 270 spo's. 5 years later their was a fire that wiped out part of the original section with the 4037s. They added a new gym and fixed it up with the fire alarms being 4050s or something along the lines. Im not sure what they where. Then in the early 80s they remodled and added simplex 2903 light plates, 9838 horns and a new panel. Not sure what it was. In the 90s the whole building was replaced with 4903 9219s. Most alarms where retrofitted out with the main alarm cut out to fit the 4903s. The part with the 2903s had an electrical issue and burnt to the ground. It was removed and in 2007 they built a new addition with truealerts. And thats whats in the building today. However upstairs theirs 4 4047s still their but their not active. The years are estimated.

  • @ZakWolf
    @ZakWolf 7 лет назад

    The middle school near my house used to have those same Edwards horns and pulls, built in 1954. In 2003 they renovated the school, and removed all the old devices (except the old annunciator, left disconnected) and put in a Simplex 4100U voice-evac system. But then that broke down five years ago so they replaced it with a Notifier NFS2-640 system.

I definitely need hearing protection with it on the loud volume, or if I adjust the screw I can make it soft to where I wouldn’t even need hearing protection.
