The Fastest Keyboard Switch for Gaming? Gateron Optical Yellow on the NEW MK61
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 1 окт 2024
- Welcome to Keybored! Many have told me that there is one type of fastest keyboard switch for gaming. The Gateron Optical Switch. I secured the new MK61 with Gateron Yellow Optical to test that theory!
For a while now, I've been curious about what the optical keyboard switches were all about, how they felt, sounded and what they were good for. I've been told by others that they're the fastest switch available on the market, and really good for gaming where speed was imperative. But how fast is it really? Does it have any other advantages or drawbacks? It's good for gaming, but what about sound and feel and everything else? Is it a good daily driver?
So, I got my hands on a Gamakay MK61 (60% Hot-Swap Optical Keyboard) through banggood and looked into this question. What I found was interesting, and I hope to share my thoughts with you. As typical of Keybored fashion, I found some opportunities to make improvements to this budget, $50 keyboard, and hope you find it interesting!

Hi astxro! Thank you for watching and I appreciate the comments! I have more content coming out every week, so please stay tuned! Thanks!
Your awesome
The quality on this guys videos are insane! One day you’ll have over 100k 🙏
Hi Soistice! Thank you for watching and I appreciate the comments! I hope one day!
This was one of the first optical boards I've ever tried. If I only I knew then what I know now, could have done some modding
Hi inksoldier19! For sure the modding did help this keyboard out quite a bit! If I think back on it, I would actually do a spring swap to a heavier spring, then add film to the switch to completely reduce that chatter. I have GK series modding videos coming up soon as well! I'll try to see how far I can push these entry customs!
@@Keybored I'm experimenting with springs right now, to find that sweet spot gaming and typing feel. Currently using 62 grams but going to experiment with 63.5 and other types of Sprit springs
its not the switches, its obviously the rgb making you game faster
Hi Noire! Haha, it's like when you put some stickers on your car, it gives it at least 100 HP.
RgBbbbbbbbbbbn lol
Remember to keep it red for extra performance, blue for extra cooling, and green for power saving
In the first three minutes i was like: "hmm, i wonder how would this keyboard sound like with mods?" ... and then you did it! thx so much for your effort ... 10/10
:) looking back, I feel I could have done a bit more to really improve it, like spring swap and film. But next time!
Found you after watching your DIY wired keyboard cable just to find out how underrated you are. Keep making these, hope the channel grows soon!
Thank you so much hamzaoui! I really appreciate the comments and the support!
Also, you forgot to mention, but optical yellows and mechanical yellows are different. The standard mechanical yellow has an actuation force of 50-55 grams, with a bottom out with 63.5g. It also has an actuation point of 2mm and a bottom out of 4mm. While on the other hand, optical yellows have a 35g actuation with a 50g bottom out and an actuation/bottom force of 1mm and 3mm bottom out.
Yup, you are correct! Thanks for pointing it out for us!
but there is optical yellow or mechanical yellow on ther new mk61
@@669triple the mk61 has gateron optical switches
what would you say is the equivalent of optical yellows amongst mechanical switches?
@@averageuser4669 gateron clears
the keycaps are making more sound than the switches. Puddings are notorious for giving off an added clicky sound
Also feels very hard. Optical switches are fast, but not the very best for sound either. I prefer the standard mechanical :)
Does anyone know where and how to order the Wireless version ?
Because on the box was the option
Hi Julian! When I looked on their site, there was an option to choose the wireless version!
@@Keybored, i was on their website with my mobile maby it didnt show up.
Ill look again.

i have a question, cuz im just about to order this keyboard!
there is 2 diffrent yellow switches on the website "Yellow Switch" and "Yellow Switch V2" . i have searched on the internet for hour now, but the v2 switches doesnt even exist!
anyone know the diffrence?
Hi Baggistrumpz! I did the same thing, and didn't find any information regarding V1 and V2. I have the latest version, so I assume it's the V2 as listed on the site. I hope the newer version is an improvement one way or another :)
I too would like to know more about them.
Man, the production and filming for this. I checked out some of your other content and you make great stuff my guy! Earned a sub.
Thank you so much for the sub! I really appreciate it!
Butyl dampening in a keyboard is brilliant. Technically speaking too it'll do a much better job of reducing case ping and hollow sound than a thin layer of foam alone.
Hi Andrew! You are very right about that. I tried it against a standard foam dampener and the difference was very noticeable. I plan to experiment more with various types of sound deadeners and find a good solution for keyboards!
Hey Scott! How do you find the effectiveness of the butyl noise isolator versus the Con-Tact Zip-n-Fit shelf liner? Is it worth the extra $10? Can one be used over the other entirely, or is the combination that you had worth experimenting with?
Hi SHCTeva! Good seeing you! I feel that the density of the butyl sound deadener helps to contain the noise a bit better than the standard shelf liner. But it depends on the situation, since you can't apply the sound deadener directly under the PCB with the exposed aluminum, since it may end up shorting the contacts. I would use it as the first layer in the case, and apply some shelf liner to to the top to create that buffer. However, for a recent KMAC update I did, I used the Butyl Sound Deadener upside down, with the aluminum side away from the PCB (didn't stick it on, just used it as a barrier) and it actually turned out great! Also add weight, since this stuff is not very light.
Does the optical stem in a normal ks3 housing give a similar sound to ks3 creamerons? How does it sound/ feel abd by how much is the travel reduced compared to creamerons? Might be a new frankenswitch idea.
Hi SamSam14! I noticed that the sound impact was actually very similar to the cream stems in the creamerons. One thing I did noticed is that the optical stems are even longer than the cream stems, and this makes the travel very short. Something to keep in mind!
Just got this and it has terrible latency/input lag issues. Every few keys there is really bad latency and makes it unusable, this is because the keyboard pulling rate is set to 90 hz and all new keyboard should have 1000hz.
That is very interesting... I haven't had any issues with this actually... Is it doing that on multiple computers?
@@Keybored Yes, it is
And Here is A Video That Someone Fixed This Latency input lag Problem ruclips.net/video/dKX4Qkbw0s4/видео.html&ab_channel=donqadro

Ik ben ook nederlands ik heb deze gehaald bij dennisdeal!
Does anyone know the polling rate of the mk61 ?
By the way, you cannot do less than 200 ms on reaction test because that's a latency of your eyes sending signal to your visual cortex and then sending signal to your fingers to click on the keyboard.
Hmm... that is interesting. Did not know that!
NIce! Definitely sounds much better with the mods and that RGB is surprisingly smooth and well diffused through the pudding caps. May I ask where you got your desktop? Been considering changing mine up and looking for something with a more natural wood, thanks!
Hi Colin! The desktop is the bamboo top from ikea! The lower portion is the ikea drawer and leg also :)
@@Keybored awesome it looks great! Thanks!
I modded my friends optical gk61 with the top housing, stem and spring from alpacas, and the bottom housings of gateron optical switches. It actually makes a nice switch, with fast actuation, smooth feel and a nice sound.
That is an interesting switch! The top housings of the optical are clear PC, and would definitely benefit from a nicer top
Love the video! Also, where did you get your cable from? And would it work only using the krytox for the stabilizers without the dielectric grease? Sorry last question, if you had to choose would you use 0.125mm or 0.200mm films for these?
Hi Sam! The cable is a custom I made from parts on cruz ctrl cables! Check out my diy video on making it! You can also use dielectric Grease for the stabs as well! I wouldn't put it on the stem and housing where the stem slides up and down tho... Might make it sticky! Just on the bar end inside the stem. I have been using mostly .125mm but recently I've been also enjoying the .150mm from TX as well for looser housings!
@@Keybored thanks! I ordered a MK61 because it seems like a decent value for only 50 bucks. I plan on lubing and filming the switches. I heard people say the stock stabilizers are actually pretty good, so I may not even mess with them depending on how I feel. Considering it’s an optical board, I plan on doing a Frankenstein style hotswap later on where I’ll keep the bottom optical housing and replace the spring, stem, and top housing with that of another mechanical switch (probably nk creams or black inks and seeing if it works). It definitely seems like something fun to mess around with
Thanks for testing the speed of switches! I wish reviewers would do that.
No problem! Hope it was helpful!
@@Keybored is it hard not to activate the yellows? How hard to hit them by accident?
bro the problem is the gaming chair and rgb
gaming chair makes you play 10 times better and rgb gives you fps boost how didnt you know that
You are right vasxfy! Throw in some gaming headphones and it's an auto win every time!
Stock optical switches have this really loud, plasticky clack that makes them feel "fake", almost. They definitely sound and feel much better lubed. The only problem I have with the Yellows is that resting your fingers on the keycaps triggers them sometimes. Gateron Optical Silvers might be better from an overall usability standpoint.
Also, speaking of these boards (MK61/GK61/SK61/DK61) - their implementation of arrow keys is really the best for the 60% form factor.
Hi Grimlo9ic! You are so correct about that! The first thing I noticed about the optical yellow was that strange plasticky-ness. Looking back at it now, I think a spring swap to a heavier spring with film would have improved the sound/feel of the optical switch even further. Will have to try out the optical silvers, since others have said it is a better switch Vs. the yellow. I have a GK series modding video planned! I'm going to secure a few different models and try to push the GK series to the limit of what they can achieve! Stay tuned!
@@Keybored Looking forward to it dude!
@@Keybored so i have gk61 with red switches should i buy a new gk61 with optical silver switches or mk61 with yellow optical yellow switches

We need to share this channel to make it grow to 1M as fast as possible.
Thank you for the sentiment Sandro! I really appreciate it!
After lubing does it take more power to click the button? It is very important for gaming, so anyone pls help me out here, should I lube it or no? because I need it as fast as it can be
Nope, doesn't require more
Your channel has too much quality, already subscribed!
Thank ou so much for the sub Thor! I really appreciate it!
Would you suggest upgrading my £35 optical or upgrading to something else?
Hi AGhostOfThePast! I feel a lot of these optical keyboards are similar, with thr exception of the caps. So if you want to stick with optical, I would mod it to improve the feel and sound. Thinking back, I feel a heavier spring with more preload and film would have benefited the switch to make it feel more tight. Upgrading the stock stabs to a cherry or the new durock plate mount will also help. I think these small mods will help!
I think that's what I'm going to do then. Thanks man!
I think if you have a like $100 budget you can get a gk61x with any switch you want and any keycaps.
Optical yellow Vs silver I am getting the yellows for around 10 dollars cheaper
They should be fairly comparable, with the silvers being considered a "speed" switch
Have you gotten used to the lightness of those yellows?
Hmm not quite... I feel it's a bit too light, and it would be better with a heavier spring swap and some film actually.
HOW DO U NOT HAVE 100k subs
Haha thanks for the support!
Is this better than the dk61e?
Has the keyboard an input lag? some people on reddit say that the keyboard lags
I have heard that as well due to some polling rate issues. There is apparently a fix to this. I haven't experienced much input lag, and for me, this keyboard was actually faster than my standard MX mechanical switch keyboards.
what is the first keyboard shown?
Hi AoniumZ! The first keyboard is a Kbdfans D65! It's with the brass plate and creameron switches and GMK wob with eraser pink accents :)
Hey, video was great! I would love to know, would you be able to do the o-ring mod to the mk61 like you did for the gk61? Thanks, keep up the good work
The MK61 is also a tray mount design, so the same philosophy will follow!
you should review kailh speed series
Those speed switches are very interesting. Will see if I can incorporate that into the content in the future! Perhaps the best mechanical switches for gaming :)
20 ms is a massive difference, also you can't say it's x% faster when you test it with a reaction time tester since your reaction time is factored in
I use lubed milky yellows and it made me 1000x better lol
:)
Just received the kebs :( But I'm disapointed in the yellow switches. Sometimes the click doesn't register and I end up mistyping stuff or have to press enter 2-3 days for it to register.
Oooh... that's too bad to hear! I hope you can exchange it! The copy I had did not have that problem!
With this keyboard my power level is over 9000!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At least!
i like the film mode, does it change the colors? i wouldn't use it for every shot during reviews, cuz it can mess with whites and i'd personally like to know the real color being filmed before i purchase something
Hi Tom! Thank you for the feedback!
are these pre-lubed by any chance?
I feel like there was a tiny bit of lube, but I ended up lubing over it to improve smoothness!
I solved loose feeling switch problem with the opticals on mine by running dialectric grease around the slots on the plate. It got rid of the remaining chatter.
Great advice! I ended up using some tape :)
Not the keyboards fault, just overwatch. Completely fair reaction to want to quit.
Haha, will have to practice and get better!
I love the way the lighting goes through half the caps! My switches are optical too! Love it for gaming. I had no idea that's how optical keys worked! I'm learning.... lol! 😆
Hi Taali! The pudding caps were definitely interesting! If RGB is important, it is definitely worth looking into. Let me know if you want to mod those optical switches :)
Hey! Which keyboard is better between the gk61 and mk61? Subbed btw ur so underrated 👀
Hi JustLiam! I would suggest the GK61 with a standard mechanical switch. Check out my GK61 Mod video... it really transforms :) Thank you for the sub!
clap
Thank you!
What do you think about the optical blacks? Would the heavier spring make for a better typing experience?
Hi Dominic! Looking back, I think a heavier spring would have helped to improve the sound and feel of this switch. That extra spring tension will help it feel tighter.
I have an sk64s with optical blacks. Bit of getting used to coming from cherry reds, but they're way better. Lube them and they sound and feel amazing
does multi purpose grease usable to stabilizers?
Hi misfitz! The grease you are using needs to be ok to be used with plastics, and should be thick enough to remain in the stabilizer stem without coming out after usage. Typically, Dielectric grease is preferred, but others also use Krytox 205 (expensive choice) and Superlube, lithium grease, etc. as well. Hope that helps!
You are so cool and i wish one day you will have 1 mil
Thank you so much for the comment FadesMC! I really appreciate it!
i have this board. looking to upgrade
So many good boards to upgrade to!
7:11 it sounds exactly same.
I just ordered mine last week and waiting for it. But in terms of "fastest keyboard switch for gaming" is really a HUGE GIMMICK. Moving left/rigth/back and forth is not even going to make any noticeable difference in a game. It only makes sense on the right hand or in other words "the mouse".
You make a great point! I think only time a fast keyboard may potentially be beneficial is maybe games like wow where your skills are placed on the number row. I do remember rogues always trying to sap each other first... maybe the faster keyboard may help here.
Not at all a gimmick. You can definitely feel the difference in actuation especially when laying your hands over your keyboard while typing
Why this look better then my Razer Ornata
Hi Jaskaran! This keyboard does have a very nice RGB!
Hi bro nice vid but what is that kabel calld
Hi Faze! The cable is a custom diy that I built from parts on cruzctrl and zap cables! Check out the tutorial on the channel!

could the pcb fit in a custom 60% case?
Hi nucket! I see people dropping these PCBs into Tofu60 cases, but the mounting points are different, and was told that it made the pcb/plate a bit wobbly. I'm sure with some additional modifications it's possible, but those are some issues to consider.
@@Keybored okay. thank you

Hi Cavey Moth! I do prefer the mx mechanical switches over optical as well for this reason
Hey would you recommend buying this keyboard for a good cheap gaming keyboard that will last a while and not break and is fast? BTW your so under-rated
hi roro! I would recommend it if you're specifically looking for an optical switch keyboard! That's true. I also have no idea what is the difference between Optical Yellow Switch vs. Optical Yellow Switch v2.
Hi Giovanni! I'm not sure what the exact difference between the v1 and v2 is actually. But I believe mine is also the latest version so should be V2.
whats the quietest switch that can put into a cheap keyboard
Hi apex k! I would say if you're looking for absolute quiet, you would have to go with a "silent" switch, like the silent gaterons, aliaz, zilents, healios, etc. If you're looking for a standard switch, I would say that a linear will be more silent than a tactile or clicky.
Dont do it Steve your an OG. Dont go to the darkside.
Haha, I am still a proponent of the standard MX mechanical switches! I was once part of the tactile gang, but since switched over to the linear side :)
