Holy moly. This takes me to 98 all at once. I just got back into producing after a ~20-year break and if I'd had this demo I might have stuck with it in the interim. Thank you, Will!!!
Man this is the second Big Beat tutorial I've watched recently. Loved this sound 20+ years ago and have been way back in love. Working on a ridiculously cheesy one of my own just for the fun of it. Such a fun style. Nice work
Another Fatboy Slim technique I stumbled on messing around in Ableton is automating sampler length to get shorter until it’s so short you get that brrrr drill sound with the vocal he has in a few tracks I can’t think of the name right now....
Just watching Olympic Catchup and they play The Golden Path on the golf highlights. Wonder to myself “hmm is there a Chemical Bros Ableton tutorial”?. Yesssss! Thank you.
Eye-zlee Brothers is what I've always heard. Fantastic tutorial. You make matching the beat look so easy. i don't know if its possible in Ableton but i just look up the original bpm online and set the bpm of the clip, something that wasn't possible back in the day, but that's the most fun part of this genre now. Back in the day they used funk but now you can use cheesy 90s songs (Rhythm of the Night anyone?) and modern technology tricks, like reversing a snare sound so its backwards and shizz. Its so time for this genre to come back. Amen Brother, fantastic video.
Great, was looking for Big Beat tuts a couple of weeks ago but couldn't find much. Stumbled upon your Ableton 303 vid and subscribed. Chuffed to see this pop up in my notifications! ✌🏼
I've loved this whole series and this one was incredible, really captured the big beat feel 100%! My next suggestion would be a funky house tutorial in the style of the early 2000s Defected, like Shapeshifters and the like!
You are very talanted, not many nails that oldschool sound. Any chance you can show how to make an oldschool Oliver Lieb production? Something in the vein of The Ambush - Acapulco (Original Mix) or a Sasha production such as Sasha - Bloodlock
Finally, electronic music from a period when electronic music was actually good! 😂 Yes, I am a snob with a purpose! I had watched a few recent documentaries on Norman and that’s exactly how he STILL writes music: he browses record stores on Brighton for funk records for samples. His comment was that he’s looking for something that wasn’t too popular in its time, something esoteric, and then make that into an amazing track! That’s his routine.
Yet another first class tutorial... I have a couple of 303 synth emulations that I created in operator and analog that I'd be happy to share with the community.
Great tutorial man!!! I recommend listening to the "On the floor at the boutique" mix by Fatboy Slim. One of the best Big Beat mixes there is in my opinion.
I tried watching this tutorial because I love those bug beats, but I got so enamored with Will’s chest hair that I reached the end and didn’t learn a thing! Gonna have to watch it again blindfolded! It’s worth it though! These tips are awesome!
🎶🎶🎶A little less conversation, a little more action 🎶🎶🎶 Or like we used to say: Amen, brother! I've stumbled upon this video by accident. And I know that I'm late to the party. But, man, this is awesome. I've commented under another video that I've decided to switch to Ableton. I'm still at 1%. But, dude, I could follow along some of your actions. I've used some samples and loops from the BandLab Sounds. And it went well for the short time that I've tried it. 🎶🎶🎶 I've got to praise you like I should... 🎶🎶🎶
Love your stuff Will, I’d love to see you do something on early 90’s progressive house, like Passion - Gat Decor using the M1, Lately Bass and all the classic sounds
The Chemical Brothers always sample drums in isolation and find extremely unusual samples from unexpected parts of songs (intros, outros and breaks). They also find a cappella recordings for vocals. And also manipulate the samples in complex ways and put them through effects pedals to get that psychedelic sound. So your tutorial is an over simplification. The craft that goes into some of the Chemical Brothers records is mind blowing.
Hell yeah, it's a great video! Based on your tutorial I've made a bigbeat track :D I cannot put soundcloud link here because YT removes my comment if I do. Anyway you make very useful and inspiring videos, keep up the good work!
Dope stuff.. would love to see something like this for old-school deep house like the stuff that came out on strictly or nervous back in the day. Love that raw sound
Hi! I'm from Argentina and I'm making a Big Beat/Electro-punk song by using only free apps, and I'm discovering that to make all the rhythm and melodies from scratch it's the most gratification and fun part of it. But I'm finding up that the "professional way" of developing that music is to mix pre existing tracks and maybe adding filters and layers, etc.. I accept that process as a form of art but... isn't exactly that limiting the satisfaction that making music should be in the first place?
I understand what you say and I agree that you should never kill the aspects of music-making that you enjoy the most but at the same time give the approach of using samples a fair shot too! That way you will see it from a different angle. What you decide to do in the end is of course solely up to you. 🙂
Excellent video. One problem though, I'm in my first steps in learning Ableton Live and as I would like to follow step by step your instructions I can't seem to be able to find the second track that you use for beats, the one from The Time (a side project of non other than the Prince). What is the track name?
Struggling with this right now. I think that iTunes might have something mixed up. Anyway, I believe the actual track name is Tricky and it's on the The Time - Jungle Love album (you can check it out here: ruclips.net/video/7hYJMljT3w8/видео.html)
Hey Will, Loving this Big Beat one! Proper rave stylings! I'd really love to get a tutorial on Moodymann style Detroit house. Like "I can't kick this feeling" Or that naughty Oliver $ track, "doin ya thang" which samples KDJ talking. Lush, moody and bumpity house with jazz feels. yes please.
Hey Will, you’re great at sound designing and what you do! Please create a tutorial on how to produce warehouse/industrial techno like Dax J (reign of terror)
Does anyone know where I can find the second song? I looked "the time what time is it?" But there's no where to be found, I've listened to all the song of the time but I can't find it
Is awesome, what about the copyright? wich is the trick?, I listen The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, etc. and they use looooot of samples, but how the hell do they have not the same issue the verve had with the sampled stuff?

Electro Breaks! .... btw. great video again, will!
Could you share an ableton project please?
Ultrasonic Annihilating Rhythm (parts 1+2) would be great
So cool! I learn so much even if it's not my preferred genre. Also, there was a 1,2,3 intro count from your breakbeat sample "The Time" ;-)
something similar to Lolas Theme - Shapeshifters
Wow.. you just created a Fatboy Slim track in 40 min. Well done.
Holy moly. This takes me to 98 all at once. I just got back into producing after a ~20-year break and if I'd had this demo I might have stuck with it in the interim. Thank you, Will!!!

Great tutorial! It'd be interesting if you could show us how to make trip hop, in the style of Röyksopp or Portishead, for example

Please do Underworld. You’re the best guy and definitely fit to do an Underworld tutorial
