Interesting take on shrimp cocktail...never seen it with thousand island dressing! But you can't go wrong with fresh shrimp cooked right. And fish & chips is always a good choice, especially when done with fresh, local fish. Nice meander down memory lane.

Wow! Those fish and chips look great! But, $60 is a little pricey. How much would just a fish and chip plate cost at a cheap take-away joint? I know you ordered a huge five course meal, but I was wondering just for reference. Also, I’ve never seen shrimp cocktail with thousand island dressing like that. In the US, shrimp cocktail is just plain boiled or steamed shrimp served with lemon wedges and a side of cocktail sauce (tomato and horseradish). Is it typical for shrimp cocktail to be mixed with dressing like that in New Zealand? And finally, thank you, thank you, thank you, for showing me New Zealand. I love all the videos you put out, but I’m really loving this New Zealand series. Keep putting out great content, and keep up the excellent work! Thank you!
Hi Benji! Thanks for watching this episode mate and it makes us so happy to hear you’re enjoying this series 😍 Love hearing about how shrimp cocktail is served in the US! It’s not a very common dish to still find on menus here but it is generally served like this with the dressing mixed in. It’s quite a retro dish. A serving of fish and chips for one person at a take-away joint would probably cost you about $6 at the lower end for just frozen fish and at the higher end about $11 or $12 with fresh fish😄 Hope you like what we have coming up mate. Have a great week! Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate yeah, I did, but I drank it all. Fortunately, my daughter’s partner works for Lion and he regularly sends a couple of cases of very interesting brews. The most recent included a couple of extremely Chocolate Stouts. Just the thing for winter.

Wow, the fish and chips look incredible and to die for! That was my absolute favorite dish before I turned vegetarian. By the way, what kind of fish did they use? Is it locally caught? We saw the beers you ordered, what is the brand of your favorite local beers? We have never been to New Zealand and probably will never have the opportunity, so it would be nice if you could elaborate more about the places you visit, the history, origins, etc. as some of your background scenes are breathtaking. That will make the video more complete and educational as you will have not only the food, how they are prepared plus also information about the beautiful scenaries and origins of NZ.😁
Hi Elizabeth, isn’t it a great meal 😄 Yep it is indeed locally caught, it’s a fish commonly eaten in the South Island. It would be impossible to pick a favourite beer! The craft beer industry has really taken off here and there is so much choice now. It’s fantastic. It’s a hard balance with filming- I understand what you’re saying- our niche is food so we tend to focus more on that. If we go off piste and spend too much time talking about the history etc of the places we visit and stray away from the food, we get people leaving the video as it’s not what they came to see. Seeing as our passion is the food we tend to stick in and around that 😄 It’s impossible to make a video that pleases everyone 😆 Thanks for the feedback though Elizabeth- it’s always great to hear what you all think! Thanks for watching and commenting on this one. Cheers, Sheena
You know I was watching your Q&A about how little the viewing is on your NZ series. Just thought I'd let you know...cause that could be an issue for you?
Hi jellybee68, thanks so much for watching this one and going back through to watch the ones you didn’t get notified about. We did have a prawn cocktail, dessert and beers on top of our fish and chips- that was the total price. Best Cafe, the name says it all. How perfect in historical Dunedin to step back in time. Does the beef fat alter the taste of the F and C's? Shrimp cocktail why did it ever go out of fashion, there is no improving perfect combination!! How long do you spend filming to get all the delicious shots? Retro Rocks👍
Totally right?! It’s such a great name 😄 The chips smell and taste richer and you don’t need as many to fill you right up! Shrimp cocktails need to come back in my opinion- I think you should start a movement 😂 Especially with those damn delicious Aussie prawns 🤤 I think we were there filming for a couple of hours or so? I reckon Thomas got some delicious shots! Thanks for watching and commenting on this episode BBB! Have a great week! Cheers, Sheena

Interesting take on shrimp cocktail...never seen it with thousand island dressing! But you can't go wrong with fresh shrimp cooked right. And fish & chips is always a good choice, especially when done with fresh, local fish. Nice meander down memory lane.
It’s a really retro dish that ole shrimp cocktail with thousand island or Marie Rose dressing! It takes me right back 😍 Thanks for watching and commenting on this episode MsKestrela, so glad you enjoyed this one! Cheers, Sheena
I love the idea of your channel, especially since I really enjoy food and cooking myself! Have you ever been to Sweden and tried some of our traditional foods? :)
Hi Louise, thanks so much for watching and commenting! We have never been to Sweden but would love to visit one day! 😍 We’ve never visited any other countries in the region either so hopefully once we’re able to move around again we can plan a trip! Hope you’re enjoying our NZ content mate. Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate Hi! Yes, when the COVID situation is better you really should try to visit Sweden and our neighbours if you want to :) It is really beautiful and we have some great foods too! For example, the swedish meatballs and our cinnamon rolls :)
We would be huge fans of both Swedish specialties I’m sure!!! 😍
@@ChasingaPlate On My channel I have some videos on really easy Swedish specialties to make yourself, if you would be interested in trying that out, now when Corona makes it harder to actually travel to other parts of the world :)

Sure was mate! 😍 hope you get to visit one day! Such an awesome place. Thanks for watching and commenting N. Cheers, Sheena
I hope the travel bubble between NZ & Aus becomes a reality ASAP so I can fly over and try this place out. The fish looks incredible!
It’s such an iconic restaurant Jason! Bet you’d love it. Bring on that travel bubble! We’d be so keen to get over to Aus. Thanks for watching and commenting mate. Cheers, Sheena

Guys, greetings from the UK. Only recently discovered your wonderful channel as we are planning a trip to Rome in 2022 ahead of a cruise but just wanted to say how much we are enjoying it alll. You clearly love what you do and that is super evident in the content you produce. Thanks!
What a lovely message to receive! Thanks so much Gareth 😍 So stoked you are enjoying our content! Oh gosh you guys will have a ball in Rome- we love that city. Thanks for taking the time to write mate- hope you like what we have coming up on the channel. Cheers, Sheena

Awesome fish and chips, one of my favorites! Oh! That sunday! Is there a cultural significance behind the bracelets you wear?
Same Robin! 🤤🤤🤤 I can’t go past them! Nah my bangles are just a bit of fun 😄 I love chunky jewellery although I don’t wear much of it as i can’t really travel with it. Those two bangles are my staples! Thanks for watching and commenting, hope you enjoyed this episode 😄 Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate they very cute!
I’m glad to see Thomas knows how to dress those chips properly 🤣🤣 seriously that cafe reminds me of an old American style diner... we would serve massive burgers but the atmosphere looks so similar! And that ice cream sundae in a glass 🤩 amazing!
😂😂😂 go hard or go home! We need more American diners in our lives! They were some of our favourite spots to eat on our last visit. Would love to do a diner tour of the whole country! Bet stepping into some is like a blast from the past- like this place 😍
Does Dunedin get any earthquakes?
Yep but significantly less than other places in NZ. Thanks for watching! Cheers, Sheena

Hi guys like the show, but try a little lime in place of lemon, you wont believe the difference

I know I’ve watched and commented on this before, but that best cafe and your seafood dishes are just like the ones we have here in the UK. I am missing going out for this so much! Had to come and salivate again 🤪🥰
😆😆😆 good plan Susan! We love these cafes in the UK- we make a beeline for them when we’re in London but would love to visit ones in smaller towns. They take you back to a different time don’t they? We’ve been there but haven’t filmed there. Cheers, Thomas
@@ChasingaPlate well you need to come
Good to see you drinking a SI beer, Speights.

Fish and chips looks good / ok the oil looks crazy old though!
Thanks for watching. They’re amazing fish and chips. The oil wasn’t old. They do use beef dripping for the chips so it might have been that. Cheers, Thomas
Love Dunedin! The restaurant you featured is my kind of hang, and those fish and chips looked perfection (though as an American, I’ve never acquired a taste for the vinegar 😟). So excited for the Auckland series! Love to you, possums.
Us too Michael 😍 We love it’s vibe ✌️ Best Cafe is such a treasure- as you know, we’re both suckers for places like this! So happy you enjoyed it mate! It was neat getting to share one of our favourite restaurants in NZ with you 😍 Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers, Sheena
They ordered Blue Cod for this meal l think its also called Deep Sea Cod. 👍
You know I was watching your Q&A about how little the viewing is on your NZ series. I am a big fan, love your videos and I have been subscribed and have the notifications on ALL...but I do NOT get them as they come out and only get one every now and then, I realized that this was happening and went back and watched the others I had missed. Just thought I'd let you know...cause that could be an issue for you?
Hi jellybee68, thanks so much for watching this one and going back through to watch the ones you didn’t get notified about. Grrrr it’s so annoying to hear- we have no control over that- RUclips just throws out notifications when it wants 😕 So glad you cottoned on and haven’t missed out! I like the video until I seen the price $89 bucks for fish and chips no way in hell I would pay that much for that
We did have a prawn cocktail, dessert and beers on top of our fish and chips- that was the total price. It is a bit more expensive than other spots but they’re using sustainably caught fish and it’s damn tasty. A bit of a splash out but great to be able to support a business with such a long legacy 😄 Thanks for watching! Cheers, Sheena

Nothing like Frozen prawns from Thailand!!!
Such a pain that good quality prawns are hard to come by in nz isn’t it. Those amazing Aussie ones are hard to find and so expensive when you do. This dish would cost a fortune if they used those and sadly be unaffordable I’d imagine. Thanks for watching. Thomas
