Mate! Friday Shark and tatties, grease on the news paper soaked through the white paper. This was a hot meal. Very much enjoyed with to-mato sauce, and plenty of sea salt.
You're never a 20 minute walk away from a fish and chip shop in Christchurch. My local also makes great burgers, patties and spring rolls. Yummy but in moderation to need to keep my 67 year old slim body.
I only ever ate there if I needed a snack after student a party. Several places had better greasies in the area. And for real night owls, the Dog House in the Square was always open.
They closed quite some time ago didn't they? There really need to be more places like Dig House and Big Gary's that are open late for the party people.
@@AnotherWanderingKiwi Lots of drunk people looking for food or video games makes for a few aggro customers in the joint. Nothing else open once the pubs and movies were closed.
@@urizen7613 Ah, that really sucks, always a few bad apples that spoils the bunch right. I might look into this more one day, from what ive seen from photos it looks pretty interesting, thank you for bringing it up! If you have any other info or stories about it I will gladly hear them.
Buller Cafe in Westport (known locally as Tony's) is the best IMHO. Handmade chips, fresh fish and always cooked darker golden brown. Took my wife there while passing through (but used to live there) - The best she's ever had she reckons.
@ProjectFrugal I have noted this down and when I am over in that direction, I will go there, and if it isn't amazing, then... ummm... I will make a video on it!
@ProjectFrugal Haha, never underestimate what I can miss. I found it on Google maps and saved it to my list. I haven't been to Westport, looks quite scenic, is there anything there you would reccomend?
Fish and chips are best eaten on Friday night at home or at the beach with family or friends to share it! 😂😂. It always tastes better to me, for some reason 😊
In Janurary I had a couple of freinds over, one who is living in Austrailia and bought a friend of his over (who hadn't been to NZ before). I got us all a Fish and a Hot Dog each and a few scoops of chips that we sat around like it was a bonfire - had an open can of tomato sauce to share around. We just sat on the ground and ate and laughed, and I was told that NZ FnC is was better than it's Aus counter part which was great.
@@AnotherWanderingKiwiyessssss!!!! We did that when we were kids. Either our friends came over to our house and we would sit in the games room with a big load of fish and chips on newsprint paper in the middle of everyone or we would go to their place on a Friday night. So good!!!!! Good childhood memories here in NZ.
Fresco's is easily the best out of the options you posted! I don't go anywhere else now...unless I'm lazy and go more local to me (Golden Fish Bar). But yeah, I think Big Gary's ticks the nostalgia box. I have good memories of that place. But before that, the Cat's Pyjama's in the central city (or the Doghouse). Yeah I'm that old.
Another commenter mentioned the Doghouse, makes me sad I never got to go there. But now I think someone has to come up with a Fish and Chip parlor called 'The Bird Cage' or something.
Unfortunatly that is the nature of the beast we are dealing with at the moment, everything is going up except the wages (of middle and lower class). I'm mainly glad that the quality hasn't dipped, at least at the places I frequent.
what seperates kiwi fish and chips from all other countries, is the dual options: fish and chips and chinese takeaways and that is goated. not even australia does this, they follow closer to england, where fish and chips shops are primarily focused just on fish and chips.
@d0ntreply First, I want to say how honoured I am to be talked to by THE Huge Jass. Secondly, yeah you are right, we have a lot of shops that do Chinese food, sell fresh fish, or something extra.
Your per capita calculations could use some fact checking. How do you measure 3 times pc from 1/16th the number of shops and 1/11th the number of people?
Well I can only say that I have no idea. I have spent a good hour going over it and can't figure it out, even trying to do the numbers and inputs incorectly I can't get to that number, but I remember getting it so vividly. I want to thank you for pointing this out, I usually try to go over my numbers and triple check but this must have slipped by me somehow.
@@AnotherWanderingKiwi Of course. It's just light hearted fun. I've been old man day drinking. I expect you were having young man memories of the not hot dogs.
My go to as uc student is captain ben's (cappies i call em. Recovers the mood after a shitty uni week. RIP Big gary's you will always be in our hearts
A good bag of Fish and Chips can certainly revitalise the soul.

I have recently become a fan of mayo and tomato sauce together, I might be going crazy though.

We have three in fact four fish and chip shops within one minute of our house. And two are right next to each other here in Christchurch.
Christchurch is insane for Fish and Chips shops. a lot are really close as well.

@WanderingNewZealand ...you see? Even you know the best place to eat chips ☺️ with friends. You can't forget the tomato sauce, either!
I always believe doing things with friends and loved ones is better than doing something alone.
