  • This is a series of one way to use FreeCAD to create a simple 2x4 shed. This grew out of just playing around with FreeCAD to make a shed. Each video definately has some little tips that I hope make them all worth watching. They haven't necessarily been made in order so some of the early ones MAY be better than later ones. If people love the series I will consider remaking some.

    I thank you, My wife thanks you for less wasted lumber on my electronics bench project, and surely a tree thanks you. Coming from someone with decent amounts of part design experience, the draft workbench was completely foreign to me.

    Just fantastic, I've being struggling to model my garage joists for a while now. Finally I've found a clear and accurate tutorial or as you put it, a walk through, which I can follow all the way through. I'll work my way through the BasicShed set.
    I like your approach, your modelling as if you are constructing the shed. Keep it simple stupid. ;-)

    I just got into the cad world with this program a couple days ago and WOW ! we can do so much with this! I am used to Blubeam for work on pdfs as an electrical foreman, but after getting some base .dwg cad drawing for my personal house, I decided to look into growing into CAD to ammend our house plan for ICF build, and enlargen some rooms just a bit and WOW! This is cool! I'm still unsure how to get a pre designed print to a work able piece I can ammend, but I'm getting there. I have converted to a DXF file, but I need to learn more about the program first. Thank you very much for sharing

      If you have a photo of a drawing .jpg or .png , just use the Image workbench to import and scale it to a known dimmension, then you can draw over the image on a certain plane with Sketcher or Draft workbench. Mang0Jelly channel has that content.

    I am a rank beginner trying hard to learn FreeCAD. You are clearly accomplished and it appears you are sincerely trying to share your knowledge. Thank you! I would suggest you could improve your videos' usefulness by including, as an initial or "prologue" video of the playlist, the FreeCAD user interface settings you set/changed from the default settings installed with the program. The settings I'm referring to include things like units, grid settings, tool bar icons, etc, etc. A person with some experience could skip the prologue video and continue the playlist. I use 2 monitors, watching the video full screen on one and run FreeCAD on the second. When I execute the same task as the video and I see a different result, it is very frustrating. If I cannot figure out how to achieve the observed result, I abandon the channel and look for another.
    Please understand, I am not intending my words as an attack on your efforts. I hope to help you improve your videos - which will help more of us improve our FreeCAD skills.

      Thanks for watching and for your comments. It's is a great suggestion and on some videos I have tried to do just that. I also try to not change to many default settings just for that reason. But invariably some like the ones you mentioned do get changed and I completely understand how it can be very frustrating. I will try to incorporate something appropriate. Thanks again for the input. :)

    There is a lot of confusion in this video about basic document set up. There are a number of posts where the viewer cannot set or read the dimensions (including myself). Can you please review the preferences for this document?
    What are the Edit/Preferences for the Draft workbench?
    If you change a preference do you have to save, close and then reopen the file in order to see the changes?
    How do Style settings affect the appearance of an object?
    Do Styles settings override Edit/Preferences for the Draft workbench?
    Do the Edit/Preferences for the General workbench supersede all others?
    If FreeCad prefers to use the metric system then how does a user in the US and using the Imperial system deal with Preferences that only allow metric input?

    exllent video, one thing. i'm currently unable set a dynamic dimension length based on the length of an edge. maybe i'm doing something wrong, or maybe i'm miss understanding what you mean by dynamic. but if you edit your rectangle after setting a dimension based off one of the edges, and then edit the length or width of your rectangle the dimension will not update with the new length. all of that is based on my use case, and i could def be doing something wrong, so please correct me if i am. i'm using the latest freecad downloaded from the github releases page.

    I'm using FC33 and FreeCad 0.19. I can't get it to show US units though I can put in measurements in imperial units. I also don't have the toolbar tools you have, so once the rectangle is drawn, I don't know how to change the dimensions after the fact.

    This is great. As someone looking at my first FreeCAD tutorial though, you move so fast I couldn't keep up. Just a little slower and some slight detail in what your selecting as far as tools and functions would help. Do you have any basic instruction videos for the program itself?

      Hey thanks. That is good feedback. I have at times tried to be more mindful of the newer learner, then I forget myself. For FreeCAD I don't have a beginner playlist pers se. But I probably need to do that. Thanks again for some good feedback.

      It's a smart move. It can be hard to balance between keeping a slow pace but not boring ( this stuff is pretty dry to begin with ) I was thinking this one was going to fast as I was making it :(

      @@mathcodeprint as a first introduction, yes, it may be too fast. but as a 3rd or 4th video in, it's perfect. I think folks watching some other intro videos to the program and navigation of the software is great, then take on building a project in the program. great work,

    I have to admire this program Thanks for you postings. I'm use to Visio. This is great but BIG Learning Curve. First, I'm not young but that is not an excuse. I really had a hard time finding how to setup the default standards for the "Dimensions" I still don't know how to change the Units for the System IE "Dimensions".
    I know your very familiar with the program but I can't see some of the Shift or control moves.
    I've learned how to set the area, create a group, and now I just can't figure out how to connect boards to a wall. Can you help. Thanks Joe San Antonio, TX USAF SMSgt Retired

    I appreciate your tutorials. Nicely done. I am having one problem that I can't seem to resolve. At 4:02 on your video you show the move/select/and corner alignment to make sure that the joist edges match up. I cannot get the points to appear so that I can make edges align. Any suggestions on what I might be missing? I realize your video is a few years old and the current version that I'm using is 0.20 but I was hoping the tools would work the same .

      Carefully analize the Snap toolbar when Draft or BIM or Arch workbenches are active, hover the mouse prompt over each icon. Those icons are commun for the 3 workbenches since they were introduced to FreeCAD. You can snap an element of geometry to an endpoint, midlepoint, interception, center of a circle or arc and even to the grid or dimmensions marks. This video is particulary informative on this matter.

    I have to ask because I want to learn this program. I have watched your videos over and over. When you add dimensions you just pull them down. When I pull dimensions I have to set the point and size, I went into drafting and set the defaults but it still starts at 3/8 size of arrow and 3/8 size font.
    Also, How can I join two boards??? Please you make it look so easy...
    Thanks

    • @mathcodeprint
      @mathcodeprint  4 года назад

      So there are draft dimensions, they show as black lines and arrows. Sketch Constraints ( which look like dimension ) only show when you are editing a sketch. If you choose draft dimension with an edge already selected you only need to select how far away the dimension will sit from the edge.

    • @mathcodeprint
      @mathcodeprint  4 года назад

      Joining two "boards" would be a Boolean operation. Or if the two are end to I would probably just make one new one the length of the two. Too much to explain here I'll try to do avid for this later today.

    Mathcodeprint I guess I just don't know what to do. There has to be presets you have installed in your version of FreeCad. I just started over this very example of Framing Floor. I created New made sure I had Draft. Set my View. Clicked on Rectangle and no "construction" shows up my menu shows "Unnamed" and "Rectangle". Thanks Joe

    • @mathcodeprint
      @mathcodeprint  4 года назад

      Hey Joe, Are you using version 0.18, I think this video was using that version. To turn the rectangle into a "construction" line you have to select the little Trowel tool first. It looks like a little shovel used to spread cement. You do not actually need it to be a construction line, it is only a visual disctinction.

    • @joerodriguez8938
      @joerodriguez8938 4 года назад +1

      @@mathcodeprint Thanks for the reply. I found the Trowel tool. Thanks that works. I have figured out how to connect boards. so the only thing I still can't get to work right is the "Dimension" feature. Every Time I use the "Dimension" feature I have to set the color, size and shape of the Arrow. Then I have to select the Size of the Font. I have tried setting the presets in the Draft and the Techdraw. I have to point out in the "Preferences" "Draft" "Text and Dimensions" everything is in "MM" I have units set to "Inchs and Feet".
      Lastly, I downloaded and installed this version twice in one week. Version 0.18 Revision 4 (GetTag) 2019/10/22.
      Thanks

    Transform does not work point to point?

    • @mathcodeprint
      @mathcodeprint  5 лет назад

      Transform does not utilize any snapping. It is strictly distance and angle based. It is fine if you know the distance and can be the way to go. Once you get the hang of draft snaps and draft move, you will likely prefer it. But it is confusing at first.
