BIM with FreeCAD - Getting started

  • This video is a general "Getting started" introduction to the BIM workbench. In it, we will model a small building with walls, columns, beams, slabs and windows, organize our model by grouping objects and creating storeys, see how to produce 2D views of our model, and finally export it to IFC.
    It is not a tutorial to be followed (will do that at some point), but I tried to make something that would help someone to simply see how it all works, and how to get started with BIM modeling.

    This is great! This is THE tutorial to get started. Perhaps the only missing bit is using sketches with constraints to generate the 2D objects. However, I love the simple dummy model approach which still shows the (almost) complete workflow! +11

    Hello and thank you for providing us with the info on the basics!
    Wanted to ask, presuming that you have had some experience also with the most popular commercial BIM software (Tekla Structures, REVIT, Allplan, etc):
    1) would you say that you can do everything you need until LOD 300 (as per BIMFORUM specs) with FreeCAD?
    2) what are the drawbacks of FreeCAD compared to the previously mentioned software? What possibilities does it lack in comparison?
    3) what would be the reasons for a person or a company to invest in that commercial software instead of using FreeCAD?
    I hope you find time to answer these questions from your experience! Thank you and best luck!

    Thanks for a well organized presentation and for showing multiple ways of achieving the same thing. FreeCAD is further along than I thought it would be. Are you working on software itself or are you a designer using FreeCAD for commercial work?

    • @YorikvanHavre
      @YorikvanHavre  5 лет назад +7

      Both! I actually started and learned how to code for FreeCAD because I wanted a free and open-source design tool like that to exist. When nobody does it for you, you have to do it yourself :) I guess that's the main motivation behind almost every open-source software developer out there...

    Excellent video, thanks :) Can you cover how to add more information to building elements, how to add electrical, ventilation, piping etc? For example import an IFC of a lamp and a sink from a vendor, place it in the house. And then maybe make your own IFC of an object like this, add information and place it several places in the house model?
    Again, excellent video, keep 'em coming! :D

    Thanks for the tutorial. I have a doubt at 11:55 when moving the window you are selecting the window 3D geometry. I am confused since in the FreeCAD manual / tutorial downloadable from the Wiki, it suggests to move an element by selecting its sketch, instead on the 3D geometry.
    I noticed two results from that: first when moving the 3D geometry, in example the window attached to a wall, the hole in the wall is updated as the window moves to a new place. but the sketch is left behind, tho the sketches for that kind of objects are usually hidden.
    Second, if the window is moved by selecting its sketch, the windows moves as well, but the hole in the wall is not updated, unless the window is "attached" again to the wall.
    I was wondering, which method is recommended. Taking in count if you later want to open the window panels, you need to work on the sketch. Thank you

    Especially the stuff with the working planes and to enable/disable the sticking to the working planes to avoid moving in not wanted directions.
    One question though, when you are creating walls like in 19:45 the distance is shown in your freecad version. Is this a setting one has to enable? I could not find anything in the preferences.

    Hi,
    At 20:00 it still behaves the same way in freecad 019 20409 (very last development version for linux) :
    The new wall is created with a clone (because the wall created before had a clone ?)
    This is not behaving as expected for a beginner and rather difficult to fix, could you give a help please ?
    At this moment, it also surprised you, didn't it ?
    Regards from France
    you may had an option activated in preferences/arch/general parameters object creation : automatic junction
    for me, this option easily causes problems when achieving walls, i wonder if this option can be awared within the dashboard
    in 019 20409 the only solution seems to be the command Less (-)

    Yorik, eu instalei o APP BIM que você mostra no vídeo, aos 02:00min, mas, eu baixei e instalei a versão 0,18, hoje, (16/08/2020). E reparei haver uma opção "BIMBOTS", instalo ela? ou não é necessário?

    • @YorikvanHavre
      @YorikvanHavre  3 года назад +1

      Você pode, se quiser, mas não é necesário. O bimbots é um serviço do bimserver que permite fazer testes automáticos, extrair quantidades, etc... a partir de um bimserver. Cada plugin tem um link para sua página própria, onde tudo é explicado..

    Hello Yorik,
    Thanks for this video. I followed all the steps in the video using FreeCAD version 0.18.4 installed on a machine running Ubuntu 18.04. I also installed IfcOpenShell by following the instructions at this link: wiki.freecadweb.org/Arch_IFC. But when I got to the point in your video where I needed to use the IFC Elements Manager buttons, they were grayed-out and I could not activate them. The only button I could activate was the Classification Manager. I am a bit of a newbie to Linux and a definite newbie to FreeCAD, so if you have a fix that can be implemented by someone who is just now figuring out what sudo-apt-get means, that would be great. Thanks!

      Hello Yorik,
      I think I figured it out. The latest FreeCAD 0.18.4 stable version (dated 2019-11-04) on the Ubuntu PPA seems to have a bug. I deleted it and used the latest Freecad 0.19 daily build instead.
