I use a 7ft ultralight rod with 2lb fluorocarbon and only use a a hook and worm, just let it drift in the current. Theres a creek about that size near me that has tons of chubs and a few rainbow trout. Glad I'm not the only one that enjoys fishing for smaller species
Just recently got into creek fishing here in MS. I love it. Targeting bluegill and rock bass. I use a Lew's ultralight with a 4'6" zebco hotcast. I use 6lb braid because it casts so much better and i use a 4lb mono leader. All in all, a $30 set up but i cant put it down. It works so well.
It’s weird going from bass to saltwater I find saltwater anglers use a loop knot a fair amount of time but never hear to much about it in freshwater. Great information as always ethan
The berkley honey worms are Fantastic!! I bought two jars last year and destroyed bluegill and trout on the one day. Durability is ok but I will say if you just thread it on the jighead and make the most use out of one before it’s torn up or falls off it’s dynamite. I love using them in the trout magnet spinners!
So I live in the dessert southwest. No creek chubs anywhere. But you make them look like so much fun to catch. One of these days I will travel up there, just for that purpose.
Haha hey man if you're going to break a rod, that is a heck of a fish to do it on! And Brendan, don't worry. I have caught big ol' carp on my UL. Just gotta ensure you are using light line and set your drag properly :)
I began using this rig in the California north coast steelhead rivers. I then sized it down for trout fishing, then smallmouth bass and gills. I especially like to use it with a big #4 bead head Wooly Bugger for trout in Wyoming and Montana :)
@@FishAnything Fishing small bodies of water likes ponds or specific stretches of river where you know they are is always better in the winter than fishing big open waters as they tend to be more difficult. Smaller hooks on hair rigs with pack bait work pretty well in my part of the state. My biggest tip would be to bait the spot u plan on fishing for a few days prior or even a week or two before if possible. My instagram is @517Angling and we’ve been doing a lot of late fall/early winter carping if you wanna check it out or DM us for more info :)
Wow, can across your video for the first time. I've never seen anyone target creek chubs. That's really cool. I do enjoy ultra light fishing. I usually fish for pan fish like Bluegill and etc. I love trout fishing as well. I'll definitely try out some honey worms. Thanks.
Darn right man! I prefer the float simply to avoid snagging - seems to help me keep the jig from digging under a tree branch too easilly. And the honey worms should be called money worms... Cause they are money.
Dude I love Ultra Light fishing. I bought a St Croix Panfish series 7' light. Throwing 1/16oz - 1/8oz kills giant bass around Myrtle Beach for me. I my kiddo just caught a 5lb largemouth on 2lb test with a baby fluke jr.
With how many fish tried to eat your float, you may catch a few of them if you can rig up something like a “hopper to dropper” rig like fly fisherman use. I’ve caught many fish using this setup on my fly rod, you could probably rig up something similar if you could find a suitable floating lure like the Rebel Creekhopper or another light topwater.
BUT! Do you already KNOW that I totally WANT that hat? 🤣😂🤣...gotta love the loop knot! I do! I love ultra light fishing! Brownie! Awesome! A tank of a chub! It’s always fun fishing the “underdog” species that others take for granted! The wedding band looks COOL in the fishing videos bud! I grew up on slip-bobber! Brownie candy! The underwater shot was SIIICK! Awesome! Love it! That loop knot is EFFECTIVE folks! Creek chub skills are important in my opinion! Another trout! Awesome! Much respect for our trout! Them gloves are DOPE! Awesome job Ethan!
This late summer/early fall, I've had good luck with creek chubs using white wax worms. A bait shop owner told me about it. I put them on a 1/32 jig and pulled them a ton. Maybe it'll work for you.
I have a nice creek in my back yard, depth is a consistent 3-4 foot. I slay the two species of chubs in the creek on a light Carolina rig with worm or corn. Heck they’ll hit dip bait and even hit their own kind cut into cut bait. Voracious feeders lol
Love the 1 inch Comal pear floats for jig n bobber rigged with a 32nd ounce and a 16th on the bottom makes it perfectly weighted so when a fish grabs your bait they barely notice any resistance. For longer range Ill use a bigger Cigar float with 2 16ths which seems to work better because its more streamline so you can cast em a mile.
@@JohnJames.grab a new regal 2500 6:2:1… @ 59 $, seen them as low as 45.99$ every now and again .. great reel for the price. Diawa tends to last as well

Thoroughly enjoyed the video man. Great end to the day and I’m looking forward to getting out to the streams myself. This channel, just like creek chubs, doesn’t get the attention it deserves.
I have never used honey worms for creek chub. It is funny because this is one of the few videos I have seen that almost targets them. Sometimes, I specifically go to small streams that I know only hold greenies and monster chub and I think it is quite fun. I don't really use expensive gear to fish for chubs because a Dock Demon or a Dock Runner will do the job and I fish areas with HEAVY cover. I frequently slip and fall while wading and fishing with nice stuff is not really an option because it would get destroyed. My question is how well do the honey worms hold up? I frequently use small tubes and Gulp minnows and the chubs are extremely aggressive. They will bite off all of the bait within one or two casts. I also frequently break hooks getting them out of their very tough mouths. Chubs also fight like crazy if you get a big one. I have caught them up to about 10 inches in tiny tiny creeks. Thanks for sharing and I really enjoy your videos.
Thanks Stephen! Totally makes sense to get the Dock Demon. I was thinking about picking one up for that same reason. And the Honey Worms hold up better than a Gulp Minnow for sure. I think you will be pleasantly surprised with how well they work! It has become one of my best budget baits for multispecies.
i have that reel in 4000 which is the largest size daiwa makes in that model. cost fifty bucks and its a little jewel. silky smooth . i use it in salt but it would be best suited for fresh water
Last fall i was just messing around, flipped some rocks in the creek and found these water bugs. not sure what they were exactly but they looked alot like earwigs, the chubs went crazy for them
Great vid, that last Trout was real nice, just goes to show you that you don’t have to spend a fortune to fish, the fish have no idea how much you setup costs!
Can you use slip floats in rivers and streams? I use them in lakes and they work very well but I feel like the current would push the lure before it could get down to its intended depth, unlike a fixed float rig where the bobber doesnt have to move in order for the rig to work. I have never tested this but I wanted know if you have, if so the slip float rig will be perfect for targeting trout and other stream species.
I have caught some decent sized Fallfish (same genus, Semolitus) on bass gear that, if I had been fishing with Light or UL gear would have been a ton of fun. I can imagine how some of those creek chubs felt...might just have to do that come spring....

This video is 3 years old how is the rod and reel holding up? I have my medium action with 20lb test on it and want to get back into ultralight fishing it’s been 25 years since I last used an ultralight
I got a question but first I wanna say thank you for your videos they have helped me a lot I just brought this reel on your video to pair it with the temple fork ultralight i got a feeling it’s going to be a great match but my question is I have a ugly stick 6’6 medium mod fast paired with a honor xt 2000 is that to much of a reel for it or would it work I had it paired with a stratus VI svi40 but felt way to heavy for it I wanna have my trout set up and bass set up so I wanna make sure I’m making the right choices but other then that thank you very much for your help
Dude I got a similar hat but it's in black, kinda digging yours better. Thankfully you uploaded now I get to watch your video while I wait for mine to upload. Maybe I'll take this Creek chub challenge this weekend, maybe record it?!... Lol
It kind of comes down to personal preference and what you will be throwing. If you really want a bunch of distance, go with the 7'6 but if the distance isn't a huge deal and the 7' is more comfortable to fish with, go that route. Hope this helps!
I tend to use 2-4lb test with the really small fly fishing split shot. I like my jig to just tap the bottom lightly but not drag too much. 1/80oz or 1/64oz Mule Jig
LMFAO, I love the hat, though if I saw you out in the woods I might mistake you for a racoon and take a shot at you 😂 It looks super warm though. You had a great day out there with the float rig. And I'll have to try the loop knot in the future. I love catching creek chub/fall fish on nymphs with my fly rod in the warmer months. Such a blast!
LOL noted I might need to swap this one out for a blaze orange one to avoid the Fitzys of the world XD Okay, whenever we do fish, I want to chase smallies for half the trip and creek chubs for the other half. Then I owe you like 6 beers or whatever the count is up to lol
So you are the owner of mule jig, what about a custom made float for that particular style of fishing, like a mote streamline bobber or something more stylish so you can make it and sell them too
@@FishAnything I don't know but a very slim stylish balsa (for perks) painted will a custom color or something else that really shine like those things that sneakers manufacturer use to make some parts of a sneakers shine with light
Question?? Those gloves are they light weight enough to wear year round? I use gorilla grip gloves I picked up from Home Depot as I like to protect my hands anytime of year but they don't have the tacky palms for grabbing fish.
Yeah these are not heavy by any means. Probably will be a bit warm in the summer but not bad. Could always dunk them in the water if you want to cool down a bit.

I found an easier way to tie a loop knot. I will see if I can find a video or illustration of it. Caught 5 pound smallmouth on it with 4 and 6 pound line. Can even do it with cold hands!
Awesome! Would love to see it :)

At 3:50 he ties it the way I am talking about. It allows you to control the loop size better.
This video is 3 years old how is the rod and reel holding up? I have my medium action with 20lb test on it and want to get back into ultralight fishing it’s been 25 years since I last used an ultralight
Rod and reel both still kicking!
That hat rocks!
It brought me good fortune lol
Bro your really good at that and I enjoyed your video and dropped a sub
Thank you Julius I had a lot of fun :) Holler if you ever have suggestions/questions!
I think that size 2000 reel should be just about right! Thanks so much for watching 🤠👊🏽
Thats the hat of champions 🤙🏼
Lol glad you approve, buddy.
Dude I got a similar hat but it's in black, kinda digging yours better. Thankfully you uploaded now I get to watch your video while I wait for mine to upload. Maybe I'll take this Creek chub challenge this weekend, maybe record it?!... Lol
GO CATCH A CREEK CHUB BUDDY!
That reel looks identical to my Shimano Nasci. Interesting.
I have heard really good things about those Nasci reels. Might have to get one!
@@FishAnything my friend has a nasci on a Denali fission. It's a dope reel.
Are the 1000 and 2000 basically same size but the 2000 has a slightly larger spool?
Yes that is generally the case I believe.
500 series reels are the pits. 1500/2500 series shallow spools are the best imo.
I would like to get a shallow spooled spinning reel at some point. I like my size 1000 daiwa though - solid little reel!
First comment wow
Love your hat and your why I love ultra light fishing
Hey thanks Jaiden! Hope you are catching a lot on your ultralight :) Tight lines man!
Outstanding video as always 👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thank you Dan :)
Amazing video man !
Thank you!
DUDE !!!!!!! you're hat is super awesome , super fashionable super furry and supper f------g cool !
I subbed .
Haha thanks man I am glad you can appreciate it :) Tight lines!
Thank you for the tips...amazing video my friend 🤙🤙🤙
Thank you Dewa :)
For lake fishing would you recommend a 7' ultralight or a 7' 6" ultralight?
It kind of comes down to personal preference and what you will be throwing. If you really want a bunch of distance, go with the 7'6 but if the distance isn't a huge deal and the 7' is more comfortable to fish with, go that route. Hope this helps!
"don't worry, my hand is still wet"
*gronk-spikes it back into the pond*
LMAOOOO
i've caught a fair amount of creek chubs on rooster tails!
Yeah I definitely catch a few on spinners but I have found the stinky plastics do even more work!
@@FishAnything i will definitely give those stinkers a try!
Enjoyed and informed, thanks
Thanks Vernon!
Split shot? Dragging the bottom? Weight of line? Size of hook?
I tend to use 2-4lb test with the really small fly fishing split shot. I like my jig to just tap the bottom lightly but not drag too much. 1/80oz or 1/64oz Mule Jig
@@FishAnything Thanks for the reply. I will try that.
Love the hat, dude!! 👍🏻
Thanks J.T. :)
which version of the daiwa presso is that? 6'6 ? or a smaller one?
5’6!
@@FishAnything Nice. I ordered the 6'6 and I hope it's just as fun :)
LOL noted I might need to swap this one out for a blaze orange one to avoid the Fitzys of the world XD
Okay, whenever we do fish, I want to chase smallies for half the trip and creek chubs for the other half. Then I owe you like 6 beers or whatever the count is up to lol
Someday buddy! Maybe I'll come out your way.
Would love to try "real" ultralight fishing, for now i've fished only pikes and perch over 500g. Nice video, but why no braided line?
I get better casting distance with really light gear on this monofilament!
So you are the owner of mule jig, what about a custom made float for that particular style of fishing, like a mote streamline bobber or something more stylish so you can make it and sell them too
I love this idea! I will have to look into it :)
Got a couple other things in the works for now - stay tuned!
@@FishAnything I don't know but a very slim stylish balsa (for perks) painted will a custom color or something else that really shine like those things that sneakers manufacturer use to make some parts of a sneakers shine with light
@@FishAnything emails me i will draw a model for you my friend
What kind of rod do u have
This was the Daiwa Presso travel ultralight
I find loop knots easy after doing it a few times
They aren't too bad but the really low diameter lines are a bit more challenging.
@@FishAnything I use four and it’s not to hard
What pound test did you use?
I believe I was using 2lb Trilene Sensation.
👍
Came to make a comment about the hat anyway 🤣🤣🤣. I have one as well, you've got excellent style lol.
I may not catch donkeys but I got style bud XD
Hey Ethan: Where on your rig do you position your split-shot?
I usually just add my split shot evenly distributed between the float and the jig.
If you want casting accuracy an UL Free Rig will work.
I will have to try one! Thanks for recommending.
