I have the same RED 84 KDX80. Same as the one I had when I was 11 years old back in 1986! So I actually Found one a couple years ago and it was running but I thought I’d try and dig into it and replace the crank seal due to excessive oil in the pipes. Turns out the crank seal was ok, but I ruined it trying to remove it and ended up being too big of a job for me to split the crank. Ended up taking it to a guy who did the job for me. Also had him replace the piston and rings and hone out the cylinder. Also added boysen reeds.
Soooo, like you, I have my own exhaust pipe issue now. I saw a video that showed how to clean out a clogged pipe by putting a heat gun to it where I propped it up and basically let it cook the inside of the pipe which turned it into basically a flame thrower 😂 which was fine because it burned for about 20 minutes and cleaned out the pipe. Something you can try with yours maybe? But now I also have something rattling around inside it like you had. I have no idea what it is, but it won’t come out. Could cause a clog, but not at that point yet to find out.
But also because I’m a dummy I thought I could leave the silencer pipe attached and clean that out. Well… bad idea! I burned up all the packing inside it and now i can’t replace the packing because it’s one solid pipe where all of the seams are welded and unlike other silencers where you can remove some screws to take apart to replace the packing, I unfortunately don’t have the option.
I heard you say you had other pipes…wondering if you have another silencer pipe you’d be willing to sell me??? Perhaps even the muffler as well??? If you wouldn’t mind I’d be super appreciative if you could let me know!
Great video btw! It’s going to help me get mine reassembled hopefully! I also had a couple XL600R’s. An 83 and an 86 I sold last summer.
Love our mutual taste in awesome bikes!

Hi thanks for the feedback and for watching...!
The silencers are available on ebay, I've bought 5 from there in past couple years. Ya the header pipes are harder to come by but they do pop up. The headers I have are for future restorations. Thanks for the idea about cooking the pipe I'll have to try that.

If you want one because you wanted one as a kid go for it. It gets expensive and you can get 20 years old KX80/100 for $1200-$1500 that's a better actual bike. Or an XR80 or CRF 80/100 for trails.

Hello Carl, I picked up a 86 KDX80 on trade yesterday! Hence finding your videos and subscribing 😊. I’m seeking an oem air box, baffle, kick stand, seat cover and and engine intake boot. Would you be willing to sell me any of these parts? I know it’s a long shot-- but I’m motivated and serious. Btw : Goedeavond is good evening in Dutch. -Ian

Hi. Well I want to keep those parts as I do intend to do full restorations on these. I love KDX80s..! The engine intake boots are hard to find I've tried kx60 (too small) and kx80 (not quite the same but might do)
