Today, I'm pitting the John Byrne Superman from the DC Direct Through the Ages box set against DC Essentials the DC vs Dark Horse two pack by NECA and the DC Multiverse Action Comics 1000 and Hush by McFarlane Toys to determine the best 7" scale classic comic Superman action figure ever made!

Hush Superman S looks like birthday cake decoration.
Not a birthday cake I want!
Cant help but feel that Action Comics 1000 is the best looking in every aspect. It still remains my definitive on the shelf despite picking up the recent Hush and Doomsday 2 pk ones.
AC 1000 is the only one my shelf when my display is not in shambles from all my figure comparisons
i like ac 1000 but rebirth supes looks great too. I wanna make a kitbash
Did not expect hush supes to claim the victory. It was a tighter race than I expected tbh
Glad to keep you on your toes!
Hush's body, with the John Byrne or Essentials heads and NECA's cape would make for an awesome Superman figure.
Brilliant idea!
Looking forward to this one, DKR Supes with the Superboy Prime head swap is my favorite then Hush.
Neca looks like Henry Rollins as Superman
Dude! You're totally right! Wow
A toss up between NECA and DC Essentials for me. On a side note, I’m convinced that no one at MacFarlane Toys can paint skin tones, because everyone has this either jaundiced appearance or they look gaunt and zombie-like.
No arguments there!
Whew, a long day at RetroCon and a great video to end the long day. Thank you! And I finally got The Keaton Masked Batman!
Happy to cap off your day!
Best figure review channel on youtube! And a tremendous singing voice to boot! Seriously, I think your formula is superb, and highly entertaining.
Thanks so much, your comment made my day
I really do like the NECA Superman, even with exaggerated sculpting but my favorite is still the McFarlane Action Comics 1,000. It looks amazing with the Knightfall Batman as a classic Superman. I'm hoping to get one from the 2-pack coming up because I really like the colors on that release. The blue is lighter and they painted the S in more flat tones which I think I like over the metallic colors.
The Knightfall Batman is the best
@@blue18404 Right? I really hope McFarlane makes some great variations of Batman using that as a great base sculpt.
@@straker454 Same here. Batman 500 armor.
@@blue18404 If you men some of the Jean Paul Valley armors, I agree. I men, you already have one Knightfall Batman, why not make some of the other variations?
What a great video, it made me remember why I love Superman and action figure collecting so much. 😁
I'm so glad!
Hell yeah Jason this is a great comparison video!!❤❤❤❤
Also I don't like the body mold Mcfarlane uses for Supes either, he looks like a total mook. I like Essentials and Neca the most
I got the Hush Superman mainly due to color and pricing. Great video!
Lovely suprise to see after a long, hard day of doing nothing
Happy to hear!
I can't be the only one who sees DC Direct Superman and hears "And I'm a DC"
@JohnSydney225 same here, it makes feel nostalgic..
Oh wow, you just unlocked some memories.
I completely agree with the two choices for “best”. I recently sold all of my Superman figures except Neca and McFarlane Hush. I think between the two they represent the best characteristics of Superman.
Glad you enjoyed the video and the results! Which ones did you have that you sold?
Great vid Jason! like you i love the neca one.
It's a great one for sure
Excellent review. Im going with neca and action 1000. The McFarlane is bit sturdier. But neca was right on with the look. I did get an unpainted Superman head off ebay which was modelled after the neca. Lot fun painting those eyes. Popped it into a DKR superman body. Head us a touch snall but i like it. It reminded me of ed McGinnis art.
I can see that working as a McGuiness for sure
The DC Direct Supes that came with Doomsday and the Death of Superman graphic novel is STILL the Superman for my shelf, with that big ol' S front and center in the heroes lineup. For me, a big, prominent S is a must, which is why I also like the McFarlane Action Comics 1000 fig.
The Superman I showed at the end for the 6" Superman Versus I am now going to be building up to is that one but with a different head
Action Comics #1000 is the best. The face sculpt and head strongly remind me of Dan Jurgens' features and slightly of John Byrne's. The uniform colors and the shields are sensational. Honestly, among the ones in the video, I chose Action Comics #1000, but truth be told, with mine, I did a Kitbash to make it exactly as I needed: I merged the chest, head, and cape with the remaining pieces from the Superman Hush figure. To me, it turned out fantastic!!! The best 7'' Superman - 1/10.
When my display is not in shambles from all the figure comparisons I do, AC 1000 is the one I use on the shelf.
@@5POAFigureReviews That's cool. Indeed, Action Comics #1000 is an excellent figure. I really like that one.
I agree that NECA is the winner. I’d say the worst presentation of Superman out of all of them is Hush, because the pale skin, bad cape, and a squished head ruined it. Man, that Direct Superman is amazing. It would’ve been absolutely unbeatable if it had the same articulation as the Hush one. Excited for the 6” Superman comparison!!
Yeah, Hush is absolutely my least favorite of the bunch as well
Great review and I agree for the most part. I've all the same figures except for cloth cape Superman. I just do not like cloth capes on my figures, they make it look cheap imo.
I generally feel the same way, but in cases like this where they give you enjoy fabric to feel like a proper cape, and a good quality material, I can make an exception
Do they produce like 8 of these figures or something? I notice with the McFarlane ones for example, they're difficult to get after a few months. I'm in UK and having trouble finding the Superman 1000.
I also hate the hush cape. It makes me so frustrated
Same!!!!!
I'm curious to know everyone's opinion on which Superman looks good next to Knightfall Batman. Take in consideration that Classic Wonder Woman (when she comes out) will be part of that trio.
In my opinion, Knightfall anc AC 1000 look best together. The blues also look good together. It's really all going to hinge on whether or not Wonder Woman is sized well
My current favorite is the Action Comics 1000 variant from the Atomic Skull 2 pack. It’s everything we love about Action 1000 plus a better blue costume.
Yeah, I really like that one too
Oooo I really like that thumbnail, do you plan on making those the main type of thumbnails for versus videos?
Thanks so much! Yes, that is the direction I would like to go. Glad you like it!
No problem!
My custom McFarlane superman (a kitbash between AC1000 and Rebirth) is my definitive superman. Removing customs from the conversation Hush is my favorite.
Icon review 👀
Loved that line "Looooooooiiiiiisss" lmao
Thank you!
It's Neca for me and nothing come close to it. The sculpt and that head is just too perfect in my opinion.
I wish it was a single release.
For real
It really is something special
D.C. Essentials for me! Great review!
Thanks!
Great video, I really enjoyed it. I think the best of this video's Superman figures is the Byrne Superman. As an adult collector I dislike over articulation. The DC Direct Byrne Superman is very esthetically pleasing although they could have done a much better job on the \S/.
Is it the size of the S or something else about it that doesn't work for you?
@5POAFigureReviews The Size is fine it's just sloppy. Same body is used on the DC Direct Justice League Classic Icons figure and the \S/ looks great, in my opinion l.
Hush Superman looks like an angry version of Jeff Loebs art in Superman For All Seasons
Hmm, I can see it
My fix with the Hush Superman's short neck is I pop the heck off and stick some sticky tack on in. It makes the world of difference. Not only does he matches Batman's height, he looks proportionate now.
I have heard if you swap the pegs between Hush Superman and Knightfall Batman they necks balance out really well
@@5POAFigureReviews will you be willing to make a video on it? But doing so might permanently change the size of the pegs. Like your other figs where the heads are wobbly.
you should get your hands on the Art of the Crime batgirl fig and do a VS with her and the other 2 batgirls Todd had made.
I have them and plan to. Sooner than later lol
I have the neca superman. I haven't gotten another classic superman since lol
If you can only have one, it's a good one to have!
All of them are great figures which means you can’t go wrong with which ever one you pick
Great way of looking at it!
@@5POAFigureReviews definitely! Cause each other figure has their flaws but also their best qualities. So that’s why either one you choose is a winner.
5POA, I got to ask what are your top figures for McFarlane Toys, DC figures that have not been made yet? For me, it’s rebirth Wonder Woman, Hawkgirl(Kendra version), Zatanna, Power Girl, Vixen, and Black Canary.
Yes, I am very aware that my top desired figures are all female. That’s because I’m trying to build a justice league collection and right now is a horrid sausage fest. 😂
Hey there is a lot of need for female figures, so it makes sense. If I was going to limit myself to female, it would Rebirth Wonder Woman, Zatanna, Hush Catwoman, Starfire, and Big Barda. Otherwise, I really want a classic Bizarro, comic Two-Face, and Red Tornado.
Man I can't believe superman beat superman
Right????
Whether one agrees or not isn’t important but this video itself is important. It’s a video with a coherent, thorough and thoughtful subject. Well done.
PS I disagree
I very much appreciate your comment and attitude. Thank you
I actually like the Hush Superman best. I prefer a more bulky looking Supes over one that's too lean. Plus he has the best articulation. I was always they didn't give the AC-1000 figure double jointed elbows.
Or at the very least that they would have updated AC 1000 by now
Essential's Superman looks like animated Brandon Routh....
I like Action 1000... but yeah, the legs also bother me, i find them too thin as well. And the stretched out 'S' . But it's the definitive Superman on almost everyone's shelves.
Did you see my short combining Hush with the Atomic Skull repaint of Action Comics 1000?
The Mezco man of steel edition superman is pretty solid 👌
It is! One of these days I'll finish that video lol
It’s an awesome figure but I’m still pissed off about that S shield.
Neca Supes is the best there has ever been made imo closest to the quintessential DC art for me by José Luis García-López.
Yeah, I really do love that one.
IMO Byrne Superman would be perfect if it had the McFarlane poseability.
I hated Action 1000 Supes when it first came out but now it's one of my favorites (same with Detective Comics 1000 Batman). I really do like all of these But Action 1000 & Hush might be my top picks here. Btw, Essentials has a great face & head sculpt.
Yeah wonderful portrait on that Essentials. I still don't love Detective Comics 1000 Batman, but that Action Comics 1000 is still pretty amazing
I want all of them, but only have the Action Comics 1000 one 😭😭😭
Hey, if that's all you got you still got a good one!
Exelente caricatura
There’s a star man waiting in the sky he’d like to come and meet us but he doesn’t want to- now commenters please finish the song
I love my DC Essentials Superman, but I’m really sad at how he’s held up. Over the years, the hip joints have gotten fairly loose. Mix that with awful ratcheted ankles and he’s virtually impossible to stand.
Yeah standing him up throughout this video, especially during the comparison section, was a real pain
I need that neca Batman, too bad the duo is $200
I was fortunate to get him loose
@@5POAFigureReviews do you recommend any places to search?
Hush looks like that actor Jason Clarke
Jason Clarke Kent lol
The NECA one can’t be topped, it’s just the perfect Superman. Just wish he was taller or mcfarlanes were shorter to match better.
Honestly the only thing about NECA I don't love is the head. Aside from that, the build, the cape, and the accessories are all spot on
I'm gonna take a wild guess and assume that you left out the Mafex Superman Hush and Mezco Man of Steel Superman's out of this comparison because you're only comparing Superman figures that are highly articulate and under $50.
Because if we're talking BEST OVERALL Classic Superman figures, the Mafex Superman Hush and the Mezco Man of Steel Superman are without question the overall best Superman figures in the 1/12 scene at the moment.
This was a video focusing on 1/10 scale Superman. Mezco will definitely be included in the 1/12 scale Versus, and hopefully I can track down an affordable Mafex Hush as well. That would be my ideal scenario.
I still feel the very best classic looking superman figure is the dc direct jla superman figure
Tbh my fav is alex ross superman from dc direct
It's a great one. I was torn between going with him or Byrne, but since Justice is a specific look I felt Byrne was a better everyday Supes
@@5POAFigureReviews fair fair
wow, interesting comparison, not a big fan of Superman, the only normal Version I have are the two TDKR versions from McFarlane, the only other Superman Variants on my list are Gladiator and first apearance Supes
I debated including TDKR, since the costume was fairly classic, but it is a specific look from a specific book and not a general all purpose Superman, so I decided against it
Essentials and Hush are on opposite sides of the spectrum. One's a bit too scrawny while the other is a bit too beefy. For favorites i'd say Neca and Action Comics1000 look the best. Why is Hush Batman so huge?
Very well said
Rigamarole done 👍
Thanks!
*laughs in amazing yamaguchi
Ah but Amazing Yamaguchi is 1:12 scale, and this was a 1:10 battle. Maybe I will consider adding him to that Versus
@@5POAFigureReviews that’s fair
I hate that batman hush is huge, I hope that they make a taller superman o shorter batman
A Batman in between Knightfall and Three Jokers would be perfect
I love my neca superman
It's a great one!
The best superman figure for me was the dc superheroes superman same with Bizarro
I have a soft spot for that Superman and Bizarro for sure
@@5POAFigureReviews wdyu mean?
Give DC to Neca.
The quality and accessory options would go up, but prices and selection would go down
The neca one is grotesque 😮
I don't love the head but I like the rest of it
Mine is mcfarlane rebirth Superman
Maybe I should consider a Rebirth Versus?
@@5POAFigureReviews pls do 🙏🥹
NECA is the only decent one and that one’s trunks look questionable
I'm okay with the trunks themselves. I feel like it's the hips throwing it off
This is a very nice comparison. I find the NECA figure to be the most interesting.
I'm kind of cheap. I bought the McFarlane Dark Knight Superman on sale. Then I bought a set of the MEZCO heads.
All the MEZCO heads I got came with neck pegs. So I replaced the McFArlane peg with the MEZCO one.
Some people think the head looks too small on the body, but I think it gives it those 1990s heroic proportions.
God... all of these figures suck for different reasons.
If i could combine all of them into one Frankensteined custom it would be okay.
Instead of the "best", this is a contest for "least bad".
I did a Kitbash with my Action comics #1000, to make it exactly as I needed: I merged the chest, head, and cape with the remaining pieces from the Superman Hush figure.
Or, just head swap McFarlane Superman Rebirth with Superman Hush.
If the Cape is a bother, just swap action comics 1000's cape with hush, and sticker on a yellow symbol in the back. 😆😆😆
@@Wol1427that wouldn't work for what he's trying to do.
Honestly it wouldn't work for me either.
The rebirth head sculpt and hair suck in my opinion.
They're worthless.
And all of the capes you mentioned suck.
The NECA cape is cloth and large with folded pleats. Much better.
I really despise the neca dc figures, I love the joker-xenomorph and the sinestro predator, even the armored batman is kinda cool, but the regular batman, superman and even green lantern all feel like the Batmetal designs of those character, those music videos with the overdesigned buff batman with puffy lips.
Just too ugly for my taste
for my money AC1000 with updated arms and ankle joints would be perfect
I really like the kitbash I see with AC upper torso and diaper with Rebirth arms, lower torso and legs. And thanks now I can't unsee the music video comparison lol now if only Todd would make THAT Batgirl... Lol
Poor Stealth Ironman is gonna get railed
Faster than a locomotive
Mafex.
Ah I didn't include that here because this was for 7" scale. I do very much hope to acquire one for the 6" scale Versus
Rigmorale
Thanks!
Hush
Have you ever seen when they mix and match Hush and Action Comics 1000? I have a short where I do that with the repainted Atomic Skull version. I think that combo might be my favorite
