I went for the base model with a memory upgrade and storage upgrade. Figured since this is a long term investment, might as well have 64GB RAM and 1TB of storage.
@@photographiezautrement True, but figured why not? My current Intel based Mac mini has 32GB, so figured I'd up the game with this one, even though it uses RAM more efficiently.
That's what I did, as well. I've had my current MacBook Pro for 8 years so I figured to own the Studio for at least that long. May as well future-proof it.
Thank you, for your excellent comments. As for myself, I have been waiting for a more power "mac min pro" model for years. In April, I will be ordering the base "Mac Studio" with 64 GB of RAM and a 2 TB SSD (only because nothing inside of the unit is up-gradable). However, it Apple decides to later release their planned M2 Pro processor chip might down size back to a mac mini because, I prefer its smaller foot print. With a height of 4-inches, the "Mac Studio" just will not fit under my Apple 27-inch Cinema (none thunderbolt) display (smile...smile).
Agree! Your video shows that the base Mac Studio is more than enough. I am currently very happy with M1 Mini base because it has been flawless for my needs. The only reason I got the Mac Studio base is not for the RAM nor SSD space. I got it for supporting dual or triple TB displays (M1 Mini can't support more than 1 TB display). Value wise with M1 Mini trade in ($370), EDU discount ($200), and Apple Card cash back = $1400 base unit. Saved $600 by going this way and got 12 months zero interest financing too!
Exactly my thoughts. Base studio is great value. Getting the same one, just bumping up the storage. Coming from a 2015 iMac, I’m looking forward to quite a boost.
@@cardbored_ Brilliant! wow… I’m coming from a 4ghz i7. Which to be fair has performed like a champ all these years and been my fave mac of all time. Hope this takes the crown 😀
The ONLY real critique I have for the Studio is if you’re going to give a headphone jack WHY put it on the back? Why not have it on the front where you already have ports anyway? Or even just put it on both? I use an Apollo X so it doesn’t matter to me, but I would think anyone actually using headphones with the integrated audio would want to easily access the port. If they put it on both they could set it up so the front port takes priority too. You could have speakers plugged into the back port and as soon as you plugin headphones in the front port it could mute the rear for you. 🤷♂️
Like you, this was a drop in upgrade - it took me less than 5 min after the release to trade in my Mac mini M1 - made it even more affordable - I have the same dock as you have. It was a plug and play upgrade to everything I could have hoped for and much more. Tomorrow is 4 months is now owning it and I am still smiling. Never looked back or regretted this move. It I a true beast in a box.
I also went for the Max chip instead of the Ultra. It seems very likely due to weight difference that the Max variant has at least a smaller, lighter PSU, and likely also less heat piping/heat sink versus the Ultra variant. I think that bodes extremely well for the thermal management of these machines, as the physical design basically accounts for twice the chip as is actually running in them. That should make for some very long-lasting machines. I did cave and get the non-binned Max, and I topped out the RAM since it isn’t user upgradable. I also do video work, and the two things killing off the productivity of my faithful late-2015 iMac are (you guessed it) the maxed out RAM and GPU from 7 years ago.
I don't know about the specifics of the power supply, but at least one pound was added to the weight of the ultra model because it uses a copper heatsink rather than aluminum.
I too bought the M1 mini w/ 16GB RAM upgrade as a stop gap machine. It's over a year and I am still using it. I now too am considering buying the studio, will stick with the M1 Max base but still haven't decided if I should go for 32GB or 64GB Ram.
No need to have that much internal storage if you keep your active projects on the internal drive. Also, what is considered "slow external storage" now is waaaaay faster than internal storage of just a few years ago.
@@MJHiteshew I have a MacBook Pro M1 Pro, with 1TB internal SSD. If I had to buy it now, I would buy 2 TB without hesitation. External SSDs are certainly faster than before, but given that Apple SSDs are really VERY fast, the gap remains significant. Moreover, we do not take SSD only for storage, but also for the overall performance of the machine. After almost a year of experience with the MacBook Pro, I strongly advise against taking 512 GB of SSD
@@MJHiteshew Buying a machine with such performance and then altering that performance by depriving yourself of the fastest SSDs doesn't make any sense. Since Apple Silicon, we no longer choose our internal volumes as before.

It cost about 120-130 dollar per month to rent… while getting a Mac Studio with the Max chip and 64 gb ram, and 4 tb storage will cost me 90 dollar per month..l already got display and keyboards as well… Never used an iPad Pro as I got the iPad Mini 6 now… But perhaps this Macbook is not a good value and does not come with a good scaling in comparison to the Mac Studio Max?! I will do programming, developing, use VMs, Linux, ethical hacking, but also design IOT devices ad machine learning for them, and On a private level am setting up a music production studio at home and will over time start to do some videos for my singing and voice acting… Was thinking that I must have a laptop due to meetings and when or if one travel for work. but now seeing the performance and value of the Mac Studio I am not sure the Macbook pro is right!
I completely switched my daw from Cakewalk to Logic with the Mac mini M1 base model. I can finally use my UAD Apollo X twin thunderbolt without dropouts. If the base M1 mini can handle superior Drummer 3 and ominsphere and a ton of tracks at only 32 buffers, I can only imagine what the mac studio is capable of!
Do you think the upgrade in ram from 32 to 64 on mac studio would be necessary or 32gb is enough... i will be doing music and sound design stuff... probably not extremely heavy...
Hey Garett, I have watched A LOT of videos on the Mac Studio. Yours was a very human, real world like! A lot of the "Rich RUclipsrs" are competing with other "Rich RUclipsrs" and although nice, their reviews are not always geared to the "Regular Pro Consumer" I will start a RUclips channel and I have the M1 MBA with 8GB RAM for my regular business job (I need the portability when visiting clients) My actual computer work (making offers, researching etc. is done at my home office 99% of the time). The M1 MBA is so good for a business machine whit portability that I do not need a M1 Max MacBook Pro. Since I am doing work and will be filming from home I do not mind the Mac Studio. I will get more performance because of the better cooling. It will be very interesting to see what is the maximum your Mac mini can do without loss of performance and comparing this to your Mac Studio.
@@savingsoul Very odd. The Mac could just be straight up defective. I've use Final Cut, DaVinci and Premiere and the buggiest one was Premiere. But all three cranked through 4k like it was nothing and even handled 8K. If you can make the Ultra work in your workflow, go for it! It's your money and work! lol But even for my commission work with high-res video I found it to be total overkill.
@@savingsoul Oh! I have heard that BRAW can be a bit of a picky format. You may want to try ProRes if you aren't already using it. I've played wit BRAW and it can be weird sometimes.
my wife needs a new mac for our photography business, her 2010 macbook pro has stood the test of time, then we bought a 2017 imac i5 and it is HOORRRIIBLEEEE. so slow. We will use it for almost strictly lightroom, photoshop, adobe bridge. Will this work? she usually is working on 3 to 4 projects with about 50 photos a piece. Will this be usable?
Your reasons are my reasons with one addition. The cooling in the Mac Studio is much better than than in the Mac mini. That should make thermal throttling far less likely.
I ordered an Ultra on Thursday and expected delivery is June 13! Now Shenzen is under COVID lockdown so I wouldn't be surprised if deliveries get delayed further.
I would like to get some suggestions: Which one is better, 1. getting 1 TB SSD rather than the 500+GB base SSD 2. getting the 500+GB base SSD then get an external HDD like QNAP TR-002. The cost of 1 TB SSD is similar to an external HDD 6TB seagate so I wonder if more internal SSD can affect the speed and performance of the device or its just for storage purposes?
Thanks for the video. I ended up buying the base model (sans studio display) and have never been more happy. I don’t believe that I will ever come near-let alone push-the boundaries but it’s good to know that if I do ever want to venture out, the specs have my back. Thanks again.
Real. Thanks. I'm opting for 32gb ram 1tb ssd mac studio. Super excited. Been weighing up options similar to you and also I have real life human cash flow considerations...
LOVED THE VIDEO....Im debating between the Max and Ultra Studios. You definitely have a point there with the Max but for my configuration I will probably bump up to the 32 core processor, 64 memory and 1TB storage = 2800. I deal mostly with music production and video editing. So, Im not sure if that might be enough or if should just go with the Ultra just for future proofing since none of the parts can't be changed. I'm a step back and see how the basic Studio works with your workflow before I attempt to make this purchase. Deep down I think my configuration might be enough!!!
Great review! Your logic around the value and design of this Mac is what sold me. Your review led to purchasing the base Mac studio that arrives tomorrow. Thank you!
One thing people don't realize about the HDMI port is why it is there. It's there to connect a TV to the Mac Mini. Don't forget that thunderbolt 4 supports DP 1. 4.. Apple expects most monitors to connect with a thunderbolt.
That’s a good point. I thought about that, but you know that if an HDMI port is there, people will want to use a standard port. But I’m just glad to see HDMI still being put on a Mac
@@GarrettCrespoCrespo Notice the Studio display doesn't have HDMI it connects with a Thunderbolt cable. That immediately tells me as we saw in the presentation that a TV is a secondary display for final output review whereas the studio display is where editing and content creation are expected to be done. Now if they would just array the speaker, and microphones across multiple displays and array the cameras together across four displays for centerstage....It would be perfect!
HDMI Makes one extra thunderport to be used for something than actually needs the speed ( as in an external drive instead of a display ) a thunder port is way overkill for a display and a waste IMO
Audio Pro people most have a high quality headphone jack, it is also good for lag free video production with uncompressed audio, and no need for battery throwaway wireless headphones.
I get that. I just haven’t been impressed by that actually quality of the DAC apple uses in the computer. Output for high impedance headphones is one thing, but quality audio is another. I generally use a dedicated audio interface for my mixing and editing. Nice jab at wireless headphones though. Lol
@@GarrettCrespo understood, I know their older stuff was excellent, but they were more audio focued them for instance you had seperate in and out even on laptops, and seperate digital audio optical ports, even the laptops have digital audio, with the right cable, which makes them perfect for digital mixers and the like in the studio. I have not heard the latest apple headphone out so I cannot comment, if I get the studio, I will compare it to my other dacs and audio interfaces and LG V series phones, with my high impedence pro headphones.
Ya. Times have changed. The volume on high impedance headphones is good out of these newer macs, but the general quality is a bit lacking. I usually use Bluetooth if I’m just script writing and listening to music, but I use an Apollo twin when I’m doing serious work.
Thanks for the informative video and excellent comments. First Apple 1977, first Mac 1984. Mostly fun and enjoyment, and a lot of work. It's been a wonderful trip. Ultra would be too much for me. I have an XDR display, two iMac 27", 2 iPhone ProMax, and an iPad. Studying is my hobby. I do photo editing, journaling, and photo books with a few paragraphs. The way you use your external storage is helpful to me. I found time machine and the migration software to be worse than useless to get stuff from an older machine using an older OS to our newer device. External storage is a good idea to go machine to machine and use the internal storage as you suggested. Abraham Lincoln was correct when he said people are as happy as they make themselves. I hope you all become as old as I am or older and become as happy as I am or happier.
Cause M2 still won’t have the same graphics or media encoder features. It’ll basically a refresh of the power efficient, but not crazy powerful M1 basic chip.
Thanks for this, now I am even more sold on this particular model. But what about display monitor. I am reading about scaling issues with display monitors for Mac Studio. Could you recommend an affordable monitor that works well. Thanks in advance.
I dont have a specific recommendation. Most Dell or LG monitors at 1440p or higher can be good options. Especially if you look at the ones geared towards creators. As for scaling, I haven’t had any issues with 1440p monitors, but I haven’t tried 1080p or 4K yet.
I’ve been using some discontinued Dell HDR monitors. They’re 1440p and scale just fine. My main priority for getting them was color accuracy, not resolution. So 1440p was enough for me.
I ordered the M1 Max 32 core with 32gb ram and 1TB ssd and studio display, but I cancelled both and got the 2020 iMac 27" 8 core 5700xt instead, refurbished from Apple, saved $2500 CAD It has better unigen fps than ultra as i do game as well.
I was in the same predicament as you. At the end of it all, I wanted the portability option and went with the mbp max 16”. Sure the cost is more, but it checked all my boxes
Got the base model Studio on order right now! Biggest takeaway from all these Studio videos is the comparison to the Mini and how power that little guy is
I ordered mine, with the Max chip, a few days ago. I'm looking forward to your review so I can compare your experience with mine. Count me as a new subscriber.
So I tend to keep my computers for 7-10 years on average. Knowing that RAM and SSDs are _not_ swappable on the M1 chip machines, I guess I don’t understand the logic of not upgrading to more RAM and a larger SSD…
The SSD is an easy answer. I’ve used external storage for years. Servers, external SSD’s and things like that. That means that there is very little on my actual internal SSD. No need for anything bigger. As for RAM, my personal use case has only barely exceeded 16GB of RAM, especially considering how fast and efficient the M1’s RAM management is. 32GB is likely to last me for the 6-8 years that I keep my systems. If you keep data exclusively in your internal SSD and have a workflow that does or potentially will need more than 32GB of RAM, getting more is totally understandable. Each person has different needs
@@GarrettCrespo Thanks for the reply! My only caution there would be that even while you may currently store all your data on external drives... operating systems tend to get larger, not smaller - you could run the risk of needing a larger internal drive just to run a future OS!
That’s fair. Granted, an OS exceeding 150+GB is probably only something we may see well after the useful lifespan of this particular machine has passed. You may have a good point on the Windows/PC side of things, but even Apples upcoming MacOS Ventura comes in at only 25gb.
I just bought a Mac Studio M1 max 32GB 32core GPU some days ago. I had been fighting with Mac mini M1 back in 2020 for three months. If configuring a Mac mini with 16GB and 1TB SSD, you need to pay about $1600, so doubling the RAM, increasing the GPU three times and a DDR5 RAM with four times the bandwidth, for about $1100 more. Some problems still stay the same. Compared to my silent, passive cooled Intel NUC with i7-1165g7 and Xe graphics, the M1 max is not faster in many functions. Video encoding with Handbrake running in hardware based encoder running about 300-400 fps, exactly the same with Intel NUC, because, not CPU core neither GPU is used. Converting H.264 into H.265 takes nearly the same, when doing this with Ipad pro A12z. Only imovie ism using some GPU for video rendering. The problems with 4k Display and lack of this resolution in MacOS is a scandal, topped,by flickering displays or blank OS screen, when restarting work from locked display. Most I like on Mac Studio is very low fan noise, the 4 Intel Thunderbolt ports, as I am used to them with many years of Intel NUC working, the I/P ports in general and that Bluetooth mouse and keyboard are working compared to the Mac mini! . The worst thing is dropping OpenCL by Apple some years ago.
Do yo find the 512gb storage enough for running Logic Pro? I just got a base model to and not 100% sure the 512gb is gonna be enough for plug in's and etc. My Mac Mini had 1 terabyte.
You can install, or move the Logic Pro X sound library (the bulk of the storage for Logic) onto an external drive. For plugins that have big sound or sample libraries (e.g. Kontakt, Trillian, etc.), you install the plugin itself to the components folder on your main drive, and the library to the external. Not a problem. You can also order the Mac Studio with 1TB storage for $200 more, if you're still concerned.
I would say $400+ ($200 for 32-core GPU instead of 24-core, $200 for 1TB) makes it a steal at $2400. Why more GPU? Well, DaVinci Resolve is more GPU-bound, which surprisingly my 2019 PC still works perfectly with Sony's H.265 4K 4:2:2 at 24-60fps. But When reaching 4K@120fps at that setup with audio (real-time, not the slow motion mode) it stutters heavily so I start optimizing them which creates lots of GB's in cache that you must delete afterwards. Still, this Mac Studio is a much better deal to me as my PC cost me $3400 back in 2019 and it's pretty much brute forcing its way instead of having hardware-accelerated decoding/encoding found on newer CPU's/GPU's. Also taking that behemoth with me when traveling is not a choice, and this Mac Studio is simply perfect! Well, I'll keep my current PC as it's still performing well, and get a Mac Mini for my studio as a second PC.
@@GarrettCrespo You're welcome! Yes from some tests I've found on youtube it seems like DaVinci Resolve Studio has the highest GPU to CPU ratio compared to Final Cut Pro and Premiere Pro being the extreme opposite. Also seems like my Radeon VII with its HBM2 VRAM is the main memory pool as when I check I find my 32GB are barely hitting like 5-6GB of usage which is pretty low. Well, Luminar 4 ears around 10GB, nothing comes close to that. So for my semi-light duty workflow I would just make that $400 enhance DaVinci's speed and a very good boost in GPU power and storage size. I've never used a mac/ios before, does Unreal Engine 5 works there or is it banned? If it's not available I might slow down my transition as planning to learn that beast to enhance my video productivity and quality level.
@@GarrettCrespo The SSD's in the studios are not soldered in. Look for the teardown video of the studio here on youtube. They are plug in. I suspect someone in the aftermarket world will figure out how to upgrade the internal SSD. But, there goes the warranty for certain.
Hi need some advice... Is there actually a difference between the Mac Studio configuration Max with 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine and the Macbook Pro Max 16 with 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine? If the difference is only in price, then the Mac Studio is more worth it, right? Please do not include monitor, keyboard, space-related or transport option. I would be grateful for an answer, thanks in advance.
There seems to be no difference in the chips aside from being in a desktop or laptop format. There may be a cooling difference, but we won’t know how much of a difference until reviews start coming out showing the thermals.
I didn’t mention it in my Mac Studio videos because I was coming from a Mac mini M1 which could already handle two displays. But that is a good point. I forget that time MacBooks with m1 don’t support dual display output
Im using a late 2012 Imac, gonna pull the trigger on the base model with upgraded storage. Ive been waiting for a new 27'" Imac, im sure its gonna be great when it finally does hit, but if it will be anything like the current 24" with the horrendous headphone jack on the side ill pass.
You've mentioned extensive video and audio work. What about graphic design? Would the Mac Studio be enough for that or an overkill? I'm currently working on late 2015 iMac 32gb and happy with its performance. Only 16gb of the Mac Mini scares me though. Thoughts?
Value proposition is good cause u have your head up your asses for buying a desktop that’s not user serviceable let alone upgradable ..plus M1 max preforms same on both machines so the cooling on the studio is just to make u feel better
Mac Mini M2 is coming in June aint that an upgrade of the Mac Studio? why not just wait for that. Anyways you think theres a noticeable difference between the 24core gpu and 32?
I’m not waiting cause I doubt the M2 will exceed the M1 Max. Maybe the M2 Max will if apple scales the next line up like this one. In regards to graphics, I think it’ll make a difference in 3D animation, modeling, and other graphics heavy tasks, but not for video. Those video encoders are most likely going to handle most of all of the work I need done.
What monitor will you use with the Mac Studio? Also curious about the docking station mentioned. My only change is to bump up the Ram and the storage because I don't used externals except for backups. Thanks for the video!
I’m gonna keep using the same monitors. They’re already color calibrated, and 1440p is fine for my work flow at the moment. As for ram and storage, I’ve been amazed what 16GB can pull off when it’s integrated on the M1. So i think 32GB will be great. As for storage, my external ssd setup are more than enough for the footage I use. Thanks for the comment though.
I'd just like to know what options are out there for a good monitor to go with the M1Max Mac Studio. I'd like a monitor to be at least 4K, maybe 5K. I'd like it to have excellent picture/color quality, be VESA mountable, and also to have pivot capability so it can be used in "portrait mode".
My exact reasoning. It would be great if you could show your workflow around the only fault of this setup for me- 512GB memory. I haven't used external SSDs before, and I am curious what's the best workflow for projects, and how to use internal SSD vs External. Anyway, subscribed and looking forward to your next video.
I think they kept the design similar to the mac mini as a statement.."Function over design". I think a new design would have scared users and cost more
I think they kept the design like this because, of the money Apple makes selling their current "mac mini" models to large server farms (smile...smile).
Base model is great but! at least add 1TB $2200, I possibly add 2TB to live comfortable, so yes are $2600 but, I wish 4TB but that cost $3200 is too much money on storage.
I considered 1TB, but I still have about 350GB free on my current 512GB configuration because I only keep the essential apps and OS on the internal drive. Externals are easier for me to work off of, swap around, and backup to a remote system without having to siphon them through time machine.
@@GarrettCrespo I know what you mean about "essential apps and OS" but is not about that, is about the performance of the whole machine, more SSD space, better performance, actually is ridiculous that apple only add 512 to this machine, that decrease the performance a little.
I agree with you 100 percent. This is the version that, I will be ordering in April and by going to Apple's veteran web site the price drops from $2,600 to $2,340 (smile...smile).
I like the look of this machine except for I would go for 64GB RAM- My work is Audio production and I createOrchestral Templates with lots of Virtual instruments and Samples. Basically, the more RAM yo have the better. I would just love the 128GB RAM but I can’t se the point for the Ultra.
An M1 Mac Mini costing half or less than half the price of a Mac Studio is probably more than 90% of 'serious professionals' require (depending on their profession, of course). I edit about an hour of 1080p video a week on an M1 Mac, and use it as my standard desktop, and it's perfect! Rendering takes maybe 15 minutes, but that's no big deal after several hours of video editing. A Mac Mini with 16GB RAM and 10Gb ethernet is $1,000. If you don't need 10Gb Ethernet, you can knock off $100. You almost certainly don't need 16GB of RAM either, so you could knock another $200 and take the 8GB model. Very few people who used a $699 Mac Mini instead of a $2,000 Mac Studio would notice any difference because they'll never get close to actually needing the extra performance.
Just got one. I will probably never find a way to get full use out of it. Its so powerful. Its like, what am I gonna do with this thing? Run a fast food restaurant out of my room? I think the value is really good. Apple is totally screwing you by forcing you to buy their $1500 displays. That money is put to FAR better use invested in CPU. Youre getting one of the most powerful commercially viable computers you can get for 2/3rds the cost. Buy your mouse and display second hand. I did. No regrets.
I appreciate your insight; but, as a “tech channel” & video creator, believing 8gb of ram was adequate, kind of made me question your experience (if not knowledge). 16g ram has been the min floor for graphics & audio for a long time. Enjoy 32 ram 👍🏼. Looking forward to that review
You're right. But 8GB was enough as a low-priced stopgap and as a basic media server. I have 16GB now and I do look forward to getting back to a 32GB Mac. Thanks!
About two-thirds of the "rich RUclipsrs" you reference strike me as kind of wanting to just show off that they got all this expensive gear...and we didn't. And because of that, I'm kind of getting sick of them.
I agree. It's definitely nothing special, but I do appreciate Apple taking the "function over form" approach while still keeping the computer good looking.
I didn’t say they were fast. When I’m throwing around large video files, I only need them on the faster internal drive for the edit. After that, they go to one of my external drives for temporary storage or archive storage. It’s not about speed, it’s about file size and pricing.
My $2000 custom build gaming rig gets wrecked by this $2000 Mac Studio in the video work i do on a daily basis. I’m pretty happy with this little box for the work I need it to do.
I went for the base model with a memory upgrade and storage upgrade. Figured since this is a long term investment, might as well have 64GB RAM and 1TB of storage.

@@Mr_Soleo yes I just saw that info about the heat sink differentiation today.
Me too! Order it now because the ship dates will only get longer. They won’t charge you until it ships anyway.
I too bought the M1 mini w/ 16GB RAM upgrade as a stop gap machine. It's over a year and I am still using it. I now too am considering buying the studio, will stick with the M1 Max base but still haven't decided if I should go for 32GB or 64GB Ram.
Internal SSDs are WAY speeder than the better external SSD on the market (like OWC Thunderblade). So I highly recommend 1 To or better, 2 To.
aaaannn then it costs a real fortune and you may as well by the m1 ultra....such a scaaaaaaam
100% dependent on what your workload is. Ive never even filled up my 256gb m1 mini, so 512gb is well more than I would need.
So you got no laptop now? How do you handle that in your work, like meetings , or travel etc?
iPad Pro. 99% of my work (that isn’t video editing) is done on that anyway. And I’ve even edited a few videos and thumbnails on it too.

I just ordered a macbook 16 max, 64 gb ram, 2 tv storage… but now I have second thoughts about this!
It cost about 120-130 dollar per month to rent… while getting a Mac Studio with the Max chip and 64 gb ram, and 4 tb storage will cost me 90 dollar per month..l already got display and keyboards as well…
Never used an iPad Pro as I got the iPad Mini 6 now…
But perhaps this Macbook is not a good value and does not come with a good scaling in comparison to the Mac Studio Max?!
We are in the exact same boat🤣I’m tryna get mine this month as well! I’ll be waiting for the review🤞🏽🤞🏽
Hey Garett,
I have watched A LOT of videos on the Mac Studio.
Yours was a very human, real world like!
A lot of the "Rich RUclipsrs" are competing with other "Rich RUclipsrs" and although nice, their reviews are not always geared to the "Regular Pro Consumer"
I will start a RUclips channel and I have the M1 MBA with 8GB RAM for my regular business job (I need the portability when visiting clients)
My actual computer work (making offers, researching etc. is done at my home office 99% of the time).
I totally agree. Rich RUclipsrs are not professional users. They are RUclipsrs... rich ! :)
M1 Mac mini is wayyyy sufficient for RUclips !
I got it too and didn't find if much faster than the Mac mini M1 for my use case. The Mini is truly the best deal in computing in the past 30 years.
I bought the basic Mac studio and I can't even edit small 1080 video without them glitching the hole time, so frustrating
What software do you use? Cause I’ve been able to crank out 8k video with almost no issue.
@@GarrettCrespo I tried it with filmora 11 but I'm suppose to be using DaVinci, not sure if I should return the Mac and get the ultra

We will use it for almost strictly lightroom, photoshop, adobe bridge. Will this work? she usually is working on 3 to 4 projects with about 50 photos a piece. Will this be usable?
Yes, but that would be an instance where I’d spend a bit extra to upgrade the ram and storage if she’s now working off of an externals drive.
I can’t believe how good of a value the base model M1 Max is! I’m hoping to pick one up sometime this summer. Thanks for your thoughts on it!
Do the AirPods Max sound good with it? In my current Macbook air 2017 the audio sounds choppy.
They sound fine. I havent had any connectivity issues or anything.
I would like to get some suggestions:
Which one is better,
1. getting 1 TB SSD rather than the 500+GB base SSD
2. getting the 500+GB base SSD then get an external HDD like QNAP TR-002.
I was in the same boat and chose the Max over the Ultra. The Ultra seems to speed up renders but not previews, except under very specific scenarios.
Great video! I'll look for your review. I ordered one too, super excited, but I don't get it until mid- to late-April.
Garrett what is the name of the hub that has add on storage for your Mac Mini?? I just got a Mac Studio.. Thank You
The one I use is from Qwiizlab. It’s a pretty solid option for the price.
@@GarrettCrespo Thank you great videos!!
Why not wait 6 months for m2 ?
Cause M2 still won’t have the same graphics or media encoder features. It’ll basically a refresh of the power efficient, but not crazy powerful M1 basic chip.
I bought one, and I love it. Thanks for these good comments.
Faster external drives? What are you using that's faster than an internal SSD on the Studio?
Thanks for this, now I am even more sold on this particular model. But what about display monitor. I am reading about scaling issues with display monitors for Mac Studio. Could you recommend an affordable monitor that works well. Thanks in advance.
I dont have a specific recommendation. Most Dell or LG monitors at 1440p or higher can be good options. Especially if you look at the ones geared towards creators. As for scaling, I haven’t had any issues with 1440p monitors, but I haven’t tried 1080p or 4K yet.
@@GarrettCrespo Great thanks. I guess 1440 is the sweet spot.
When you say 1440 p would that be a 2560 X 1440 p monitor
what monitor would you be using? i know there are major scaling issues on 4k monitors
I’ve been using some discontinued Dell HDR monitors. They’re 1440p and scale just fine. My main priority for getting them was color accuracy, not resolution. So 1440p was enough for me.

I think this just convinced me I need a base model studio as well. Thanks for the help!
Can I ask what dock that is, that can hold an SSD? And is it also the same size as the Studio?
You make a compelling case for an upgrade.
Thanks for the input! I haven’t tried DaVinci Resolve. Not my editor of choice, so I appreciate you sharing your experience!
Great Video! I want one of those docs :) What is it ??
I am wondering why internal 8TB storage cost cost more then base Mac studio with all the advance hardware.
Most likely cause you’re buying Apples custom configured SSD modules that are soldered to the board. I’m sure that can drive price up a lot.
@@GarrettCrespo The SSD's in the studios are not soldered in. Look for the teardown video of the studio here on youtube. They are plug in. I suspect someone in the aftermarket world will figure out how to upgrade the internal SSD. But, there goes the warranty for certain.
Would the base model be good for vfx and 3D animation?
Thats the kind of workflow where I'd recommend getting the bump to the fill 32 GPU cores.

Hi need some advice...
Is there actually a difference between the Mac Studio configuration
Max with 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine and the Macbook Pro Max 16 with 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine?
If the difference is only in price, then the Mac Studio is more worth it, right?
Please do not include monitor, keyboard, space-related or transport option. I would be grateful for an answer, thanks in advance.
There seems to be no difference in the chips aside from being in a desktop or laptop format. There may be a cooling difference, but we won’t know how much of a difference until reviews start coming out showing the thermals.
Thank you for the video!
I bought a Mac Studio because I can hook up more than 2 displays. No one really ever motions that, was a key reason why I bought it.
Thoughts?
Stay with your 32gb ram. Anything lower NO
I like the smallness of the Max Studio, I have never bought a computer because of its looks. I buy a computer for what is inside of it.
Then you’ll love this! It’s small, good looking, AND packs a ton of performance inside! Lol
Value proposition is good cause u have your head up your asses for buying a desktop that’s not user serviceable let alone upgradable ..plus M1 max preforms same on both machines so the cooling on the studio is just to make u feel better
Someone’s salty.

@@GarrettCrespo Thanks, they look like apple..
Check out the Asus ProArt 32" 4k monitor
My exact reasoning. It would be great if you could show your workflow around the only fault of this setup for me- 512GB memory. I haven't used external SSDs before, and I am curious what's the best workflow for projects, and how to use internal SSD vs External. Anyway, subscribed and looking forward to your next video.
I think they kept the design similar to the mac mini as a statement.."Function over design". I think a new design would have scared users and cost more

Externals are easier for me to work off of, swap around, and backup to a remote system without having to siphon them through time machine.
they should have 1TB as base on a system they name as "Studio"

I’ve seen sever music producers say the same thing. I thought video was heavy on RAM, but audio production is on a whole other level!
It looks like a Mac Studio is only a solution for every serious professional. Thank you for confirming that.
@@afriedli I agree for a video editing, but other task may require much more resources.

No regrets.
Not sure if you are following the Dave Ramsey approach but if not the Apple credit card has the 0% APR installments.

Way to go Apple on being 20 years late on this. Meh...
The salt! 😅
The design is nothing special IMO. I think it could have looked a bit more interesting. Not sure why it isn't space grey either.
I agree. It's definitely nothing special, but I do appreciate Apple taking the "function over form" approach while still keeping the computer good looking.
Fkn great..but why everybody must to know about it..:D
I enjoy smoking Mac1 x Banana kush 😋 you seem like your arguing with yourself a lot
External drives aren’t faster dude 😂
I didn’t say they were fast. When I’m throwing around large video files, I only need them on the faster internal drive for the edit. After that, they go to one of my external drives for temporary storage or archive storage. It’s not about speed, it’s about file size and pricing.
I like my women I mean my Mac mini thick
these tech videos are ridiculous hhaha man of course the best is better! it is all about having money and what your work load is
You could save loads and build ya own, i know you know this... Apple is over priced Apples 🍎
My $2000 custom build gaming rig gets wrecked by this $2000 Mac Studio in the video work i do on a daily basis. I’m pretty happy with this little box for the work I need it to do.
I’m actually making a video talking about how this thing has aged over the last year. It’ll be out on Friday. Should be fun!
why didnt you just buy a keyboard? haha
M1 Mac Studio = Twin super mac mini's?
